Aeiortvhello00:10
Aeiortvhello is it possible to download 15.04 and is it recommended to use it in a computer00:19
k1lAeiortv: 15.04 is still beta. so i would recommend you trying 14.04 when you are a beginner00:20
Aeiortvk1l: i don't want anything amazon on my computer though, will just installing another DE work to prevent that?00:20
ObrienDave*bites tongue*00:21
Aeiortv?00:21
k1lAeiortv: you can disable that in the system settings easily or you can install a different desktop-setup when you use a flavour of ubuntu00:21
k1l!flavour | Aeiortv00:21
ubottuAeiortv: !Ubuntu-GNOME, !Kubuntu, !Xubuntu and !Lubuntu are simply flavors of Ubuntu that come with GNOME, KDE, Xfce, and LXDE (respectively) installed as default, instead of Unity. Other specialized flavors of Ubuntu include !Edubuntu, Ubuntu !Studio, and !Mythbuntu.00:21

MeanGene1990anyone still with me on what i have to do with my partitions?01:52
kyusaki@MeanGene1990 what is the problem with your partitions?01:53
k1lMeanGene1990: you got 4 primary partitions there. you can only have maximum 4 primary. so you need to delete at least one partition to make a "extended" one and put the new ubuntu partitions into there.01:53
MeanGene1990which should i delete01:54
k1l(but i am going to go afk in some minutes so i cant help you any further on this)01:54
Bashing-omMeanGene1990: What is generally done in this situation is to copy off the Windows' recovery partition to CD .. and then reuse that partition for ubuntu as an extended partition .01:57
MeanGene1990Bashing-om: so i have to back up one of those partitions to a disc and basicly remove it and replace it with a partition for ubuntu?01:59
MeanGene1990Bashing-om: how do i open a partition to see whats inside so i can back up and remove it02:00
kyusakiYou mount it.02:00
Bashing-omMeanGene1990: Yeah .. there is that inherant 4 prinary partition limit to get over, The way that is done is take 1 of the prinary partitions and make it as an 'extnded' partition as a container to hold 'logical' partitions. ubuntu will happily install to a logicl partition .02:01
MeanGene1990kyusaki: i think one of the partitions contains "HP tools" and only "HP tools"02:01
kyusakiBloatware i suppose ?02:02
MeanGene1990Bashing-om: sorry i didnt see what you had said before i sent that last message02:02
MeanGene1990how would i go about doing that02:03
kyusakiMany recovery partitions usually contains Win 7/8 OEM with most of the fun stuff that the manufacturer wants you to have.02:03
zykotick9Bashing-om: on DOS partition tables.  GPT doesn't have this limitation.02:04
MeanGene1990is a partition a drive?02:05
Bashing-omMeanGene1990: I can not tell you how to operate your system . But, if it were me I would re-purpose that HP Tools partition .02:05
Enkidu_akMeanGene1990, Partitions exist on a drive. Have a look in /dev02:05
Bashing-omzykotick9: Yeah :) GPT runs with 128 partitions before additional steps have to be taken .02:07
Enkidu_akMeanGene1990, Drives are usually represented by an abbreviated device type <sd, dm, etc>, a letter indicating order <a, b, c> and a number indicating the partition number. If you type mount without any options in term then you will see an example of this.02:07
zykotick9Bashing-om: thanks, i wasn't actually aware of the 128 "limit"  TIL02:08
MeanGene1990Enkidu_ak: i typed mount into the term and i see what your talking about but its like spanish to me. I'm just looking for a way to install ubuntu along side windows. dualboot02:10
Bashing-omzykotick9: Back in the day, I learned about addressing. It is still true today .. can only see what numbers can be written .02:10
Enkidu_akMeanGene1990, What have you done towards that end so far?02:11
hanasakihow do you make kde forget about the usb stick that was inserted?02:12
Enkidu_akAh, now I see what Bashing-om was telling you.02:12
MeanGene1990Enkidu_ak: Ive downloaded, verified, burned and tried to install ubuntu along side windows three times02:13
MeanGene1990Enkidu_ak:  I understand what Bashing-om is saying i just need to know what to do next and how to do it02:14
Enkidu_akMeanGene1990, To be clear, are you trying to install Ubuntu on the same partition as Windows or are you trying to install it to a separate partition to choose between them at boot?02:14
Enkidu_akMeanGene1990, Ok02:14
MeanGene1990Enkidu_ak: i will install it on the same if its possible02:14
MeanGene1990Enkidu_ak: I want to be able to dualboot.02:15
Enkidu_akMeanGene1990, Generally Ubuntu is installed on a separate partition in that case. I believe that Bashing-om was instructing you with that in mind, but I did come in late so I might have missed something. I've never tried to install Ubuntu on the same partition as Windows. I believe it can be done, though.02:16
Jonno_FTWif the admin has set /etc/dconf/db/ locks, how can I override them as a user?02:16
Enkidu_akMeanGene1990, You said that you have attempted to install Ubuntu three times already. What precisely did you do? How did those attempts end?02:17
SonikkuAmericaEnkidu_ak - Same partition as? How does that work? Wubi died in 2013...02:19
annoymousekirkland: Nice story02:19
Enkidu_akSonikkuAmerica, I've never attempted it. I wasn't sure if it was still possible or not.02:19
Bashing-omMeanGene1990: It is a long process to "make room" for ubuntu. IO am burned out for this session, will be glad to assist in my A< .. for now prior to proceeding. defrag Windows 2 times . find the partition to be deleted, resize Windows OS - ubuntu needs at least 30 gigs for a long lasting experience - . then run Windows' check disk 2 times . Then you are ready to proceed with the ubuntu install .02:20
MeanGene1990Enkidu_ak: I booted from the disc. i chose to install ubuntu. i connected to my network. then it asks if i want to install ubuntu inside windows or replace windows. i chose to install inside windows because i dont want to lose it. this is my first time ever using a unix based os. then it asks me to choose auto configure the partitions or manually do it so i chose auto and hit continue. then it brings me to the ubuntu logo and sa02:21
Bashing-omEnkidu_ak: MeanGene1990 We are hitting that 4 primary partition limit. presently there is no partition to instalu ubunti onto .02:21

SchrodingersScat!gnome | aliman04:37
ubottualiman: GNOME was the default desktop environment on Ubuntu up to 10.10. To install the GNOME Shell, type [ sudo apt-get install gnome-shell ] in a !terminal. For the GNOME-based !flavor of Ubuntu, see !ubuntu-gnome04:37
eikon81galiman, when you install another destop environment (gnome, xfce, etc) you can log into each environment individually at the login screen04:42
eikon81gthere is a button on the login screen where you can choose the session you want..04:42
eikon81ggood luck04:42
* eikon81g is back (gone 01:18:00)04:43
alimani am installing it by usb stick. down from ubuntugnome.org 14.1004:43
eikon81goh well then you are installing the gnome flavor of ubuntu it is basically ubuntu without unity and gnome in it's place04:44
eikon81gyou can use your current installation and use the command from above to install the destop environment04:44
eikon81gthen logout and choose the session for gnome04:45
eikon81gso your machine will have both DEs and you could choose between unity (default ubuntu de) and GNOME04:45
eikon81ginstalling GNOME from the iso as in a fresh OS install is kind of the long way around04:46
eikon81ghope that helps..04:46
alimani pressed erase disk and install gnome hope it wont keep unity around it should erase all04:47
eikon81gyea, that will just install the fresh os with GNOME as your default Desktop Environment (DE)04:47
sunnyrainQuite excited. I am going to remove WIndows 8.1 soon and install Ubuntu as a permanent OS! I might as well since I need to reformat my pc to GPT. Currently I've installed W8.1 in legacy MBR mode by accident :-(04:48
eikon81gyou could dual-boot sunnyrain04:48
=== CompuDesktop is now known as Compu
sunnyraineikon81g: I was going to, but I figure VM and WINE should be fine04:49
eikon81g*should be.. some programs are buggy and or slower than running on windows just doublecheck before you get too deep :\ LOL04:49
sunnyraineikon81g: Ok. Is it hard to dual boot Ubuntu with a UEFI/GPT install? I've been spoilt by the simplicity of MBR04:50
eikon81gif you have the hardware for it VirtualBox should be a nice fit with a clean windows image04:50
sunnyrainnah, really basic hardware (pentium G3240 dual core)04:50
sunnyraindoesn't even support hardware virtualisation I think :-)04:50
eikon81gwell it really depends dualboot may be a better fit if you are running programs that are heavy on resources (games, etc.)04:51
sunnyrainyeah, stopped playing games ages ago :-)04:51
eikon81gthat way you have a clean windows environment for the specific programs and you can still fun Ubuntu on the other partition04:51
eikon81g**run not fun04:52
sunnyraineikon81g: you know what, that sounds much more sensible. So I will backup, make a windows 8.1 bootable usb in UEFI mode and then hopefully it will format my disk drive to GPT rather than MBR. Then after that I shall install Ubuntu in dual boot hoping it goes ok with UEFI04:52
sunnyrainI think I just need to make sure I don't mess with the UEFI bootlader and it should be fine (when installing Ubuntu)04:53
eikon81gwell uefi is tricky on some machines but GRUB is the bootloader that will handle which partition boots04:54
sunnyrainOkie dokie. I am sure there are heaps of guides online. I'll have to read up on them since GPT is new to me04:54
eikon81gthe drive can have multiple partition types MBR, NTFS, etc it shouldn't cause an issue with your setup04:54
eikon81gyea, read a few guides on dualbooting windows 8 and ubuntu, they are out there by the boatload04:55
eikon81gI am going to dualboot a netbook with 7 and ubuntu but I have been slacking.. all I have done is a windows 7 install with a seperate un-allocated portion of my drive to use for ubuntu04:56
eikon81gduring the windows install I just formatted the drive, set the partition size to +/- half the drive size and installed windows BAU04:56
eikon81g(business as usual)04:56
sunnyrainyeah, Sometimes I wish I just had two seperate drives for each OS with a physical switch to boot accordingly04:56
eikon81gso half the drive remains unformatted at this time04:56
eikon81gif it's done right the partition basically allows you the same functionality no need for 2 physical drives unless the drive size is an issue..04:57
eikon81git simplifies it from the outside looking in but just remember to keep a nice backup and dig in.. if you have to scrap it and restore a backup then no big deal..04:58
eikon81gthe bootloader is still the key to booting individual OS's04:58
eikon81g!grub04:58
ubottuGRUB2 is the default Ubuntu boot manager. Lost GRUB after installing Windows? See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestoreGrub - For more information and troubleshooting for GRUB2 please refer to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub204:58
sunnyrainIndeed. I used Linux Mint 17 for half a year. But now I think I need to give Ubuntu a chance since they have better hardware support etc04:58
sunnyrainI just liked the simplicity of having on;y one OS though04:59
eikon81gubuntu is the biz04:59
AragoniteIs ext4 efficient for handling lots of small text files? I have 20gb of 100k text files on samsung ssd and file operations take sooo looong04:59
eikon81git's nice but once you get it figured out it's really just about the same just make your selection at boot and your machine will operate normally in whichever os you choose04:59
eikon81gAragonite, it depends some systems handle ext4, fat, ntfs filesystems differently05:00
Aragonitehmm it's also connected via usb305:01
eikon81gare you using the SSD as an external to a machine with a specific os on it and which?05:01
Aragoniteyes, I have ubuntu laptops with tahr on it, ssd is connected via usb305:01
eikon81glike MACos is terrible with FAT drives.. very slow because you have to use like NTFS 3g to make it read/write compatible and it's not efficient05:01
Aragoniteoh, 64bit os...05:01
eikon81gyea, i believe it will be fine.. unless someone else has an objection05:02
eikon81gI think ext is native to ubuntu (no additional software libraries are needed) - from what I know which is not much..05:02

eikon81gthis guy did a test Aragonite - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=214315905:06
eikon81glooks like ext4 had the best speeds..05:06
eikon81glol aliman what language are you looking for? not english I suppose05:06
alimanwell english but i dont really look for a special language i just wait to install all the packs he wants. i am booting gnome right now05:07
eikon81gAragonite, they are saying (which we kind of talked about) that if you don't need to use the external for a windows machine as well that ext4 is prolly your best bet05:07
Aragoniteoh very cool thanks!05:08
eikon81gthere are windows programs you can use to read a ext4 partition but the speeds will likely suffer05:08
eikon81gnp glad to help I am a newcomer so I just pitch in if I can..05:08
AragoniteI tried to do the same thing in windows and got some really weird errors ... about half hour into copying stuff05:08
eikon81ggood luck05:08
Aragoniteso i booted into linux, created ext4 partition ... copied everything there ..05:09
Aragonitethanks!05:09
eikon81gyea could be due to the fact that windows wont use the ext4 partition natively and whatever you are using to work with it is buggy05:09
eikon81gnp hope it goes well (backup, backup, backup!) lol05:09
AragoniteI meant I split the ssd into ntfs and ext405:09
LoshkiAragonite: 20gb of files in one directory?05:09
eikon81gyea, you could do it that way too05:09
Aragonitehaha yeah the files are all in the same directory05:10
LoshkiIf you structure them into directories, access may go much faster.05:11
Aragonitehmm05:11

Enkidu_akI can't think of anything that would break your system from that, but there are a few things that might break X06:56
tumblerEnkidu_ak, why?06:57

IMeMyhello, everyone. I have an Android tablet with a microSD inserted. I have the tablet plugged into my Linux laptop. When I run "sudo gparted", gparted can't see the device. Gparted can only see the hard drive's partitions. please help.07:06
cfhowlettIMeMy, you would be better served using android tools; ADB comes to mind.07:07
Appl3Korkok Enkidu_ak what do you want from it?07:07
IMeMycfhowlett: is it really better to do partitioning on the android tablet itself? I ask this because the FAQ of the app I'm trying to use says I should partition using Linux/Mac/Windows (i.e. some other computer).07:08
Appl3KorkEnkidu_ak: http://pastebin.com/uXSNkue507:08
soupnanodesukarIMeMy: take your sim card out, put it in a simcard holder, and format it on your computer that way. you can't gparted through the device. you have to do it directly.07:08
cfhowlettIMeMy, adb it a linux app used to manage android devices.07:08
soupnanodesukaror if you're rooted, you can use busybox.07:08
Enkidu_akAppl3Kork: I don't know, actually. I'm just poking around. Maybe we will find something strange.07:08
cfhowlett*adb IS ...*07:08
deper29IMeMy: it's also good practice to use gksudo instead of sudo for gtk apps07:08
IMeMysoupnanodesukar: I left my SD adapter at home. :(07:08
Ben64IMeMy: you'd need to have the android device act as a Mass Storage Device to do what you're seeming to want, if it doesn't have that option, you're out of luck07:09
IMeMysoupnanodesukar: but i'll try cfhowlett's advice (use an app to partition)07:09
soupnanodesukardepending on your model, you may need root. Sometimes you'll find an option to format under the settings menu storage section.07:10
IMeMyBen64, do you mean choosing between "Connect as Media device (MTP)" and "Connect as camera (PTP)"? If so, I'm connected by MTP.07:10

Appl3Korkit's been sitting there for 30 min now, and still nothing.  I can see the directories via FTP08:12

helpwithbackupHey all.  I need to backup an internal Windows HD to two USBs that I have on a computer running ElementaryOS (based off Ubuntu - that's why I'm coming to you guys for help) off a USB.  What do you guys think is the best method for copying all the files from the internal HD to the USBs?13:41
cfhowletthelpwithbackup, sorry, but only ubuntu is supported here.  ask elementary for support of their distro.13:42

cfhowlett!flavors | helpwithbackup, no.  ONLY ubuntu support here.  elementary is NOT ubuntu13:45
ubottuhelpwithbackup, no.  ONLY ubuntu support here.  elementary is NOT ubuntu: !Ubuntu-GNOME, !Kubuntu, !Xubuntu and !Lubuntu are simply flavors of Ubuntu that come with GNOME, KDE, Xfce, and LXDE (respectively) installed as default, instead of Unity. Other specialized flavors of Ubuntu include !Edubuntu, Ubuntu !Studio, and !Mythbuntu.13:45
helpwithbackupOkay - sorry for bothering you all13:46
cfhowletthelpwithbackup, why?  because every distro publisher changes the base distro in ways that ubuntu can't be held responsible for.  I might add, this is also why Debian doesn't provide ubuntu support.13:46

knobHey guys.. I don't know if I am missing something basic.  I am trying to scp copy a file from a remote server, to the local machine.   I am using  scp user@ip.add.ress:/home/user/filename.sql /                      Yet it returns "permission denied".13:51
BluesKajvbgunz, with kvm and any vm , the amount of memory and cpu assigned to the vm makes all the difference13:51
knobI am not sure "where" the permission is failing...   the file has 664 permission... yet... trully not sure where or what is happening.   Any ideas?13:52
EriC^^knob: try ..... .sql /13:52
Piciknob: Your user doesn't have access to /  If you want it in the current directory use . instead13:52
knobWhere am I going wrong?13:52
EriC^^knob: it's cause you can't write to "/" unless you use sudo13:52
EriC^^knob: sorry, try ..... .sql ~/13:52
knobBAM yes! EriC^^ and Pici13:52

Piciusing sudo for this is probably a bad idea anyway.13:52
EriC^^yeah13:53
vbgunzBluesKaj: yeah, 2gb of memory, 2 cores on a 4690k. I don't expect it to be blazing fast but a smooth moving mouse cursor and auto resize of the display to the window would be nice13:53
knobSomething very simple, yet it flew over my head.     Now it just transfered fine with .    ... which is what I really wanted.13:53
vbgunzBluesKaj: I just remember a time when VM's felt faster. now they're just painful to play with13:53
knobNow I understand I was dropping it into my local machine's root directory  /    , and I did not want that.  I wanted the current directory.   Now is all good.   Thank you!13:53
cfhowlettvbgunz, resize to window?  guest additions?  or does kvm hve that?13:53
BluesKajvbgunz, try the F key for full size when in the guest OS13:54
vbgunzcfhowlett: it's grayed out for me, playing around with some settings, and getting it not to be grayed out but checked still doesn't auto resize when the window changes size13:54
EriC^^vbgunz: the whole vm's size?13:54
vbgunzI'll leave kvm installed, it's way way faster than virtualbox13:54
EriC^^vbgunz: you might need to use grub to get that done13:55
cfhowlettvbgunz, I've only ever used vbox but windows runs quite well there ...13:55
vbgunzEriC^^: the window size13:55
BluesKajvbgunz, what about networking , can you see the other pcs on your network in windows?13:56
vbgunzthe guest in kvm doesn't automatically resize to the host window size. I remember a while back vmware player was so good you could literally play games like Warframe in it with almost no problem. I just want a faster experience. sort of jump in and out with minimal fuss13:57
vbgunzBluesKaj: no, I haven't tried but networking does work in the guest13:58
BluesKajvbgunz, I don't mean the internet, I'm talking about the other pcs onm your LAN , if you are on one.13:59
vbgunzfrom my linux host yes, I haven't tried it with the guest13:59
vbgunzI just wanted to show my son something, he was real excited about something and I crushed his dream with a virtual machine. breaks my heart to do it but he needed to see14:00
vbgunzthe performance of kvm is really impressive. no joke, it's fast when clicking on say control panel and it just opens but moving the mouse feels like theres some extra latency14:03
BluesKajvbgunz, yes it's realy fast and smooth.14:05
celexikvm is fine for servers but for desktop vms its quite buggy14:11
celexilaggy mouse, blurred graphics, no gpu accel14:11

annstihello. I got some problems with gnupg. I installed gnupg2 and now it ask all the time for my passphrase if i want to decrypt a file that is encrypted with my key. how to make it not asking and just decrypting instead?17:07
bekksannsti: Thats a feature. Other everyone stealing your PC would be able to decrypt your files.17:07
annstihow to disable that feature17:07
annstimy harddrive is encrypted. i do not need that feature17:08
bekksannsti: Obviously you need it, since you installed and used gnupg.17:08
annstiwhat i mean is that i do not need the feature to ask for the passphrase. I want the passphrase unlocked but that does not seem to work17:09
OerHeksannsti, without password question, what is the use of gnupg2 within an encrypted volume?17:11
huigannsti: gnupg2 if not specified otherwise uses symmetric encyption. in symmetric encryption you generate a key and with that key encrypt (and decrypt) the data. well, that key is obtained from the passphrase17:12
huigthat is why you need a passphrase17:13
annstiok, let me more specific please. I create a gpg-key and encrypt a file with that key. I now want to decrypt that file -> gnupg2 asks for the passphrase. I thought that passphrase gets unlocked when logging into the desktop session so i do not have to enter it every time17:14
XposWinUdaftykins: problem with alsamixer is that regardless what values I change, they jump back to original as soon as I scroll the master volume.17:15
tos-1annsti: You are probably looking for something linke gnupg-agent17:15
daftykinsah well.17:15

DJonesifthisthenfi: Anyway, do you have an Ubuntu support issue?19:50
ifthisthenfiNo, I just lurk and attempt to help others with their issues19:50
ThvmhIs it a good option to install a virtual environment on my ubuntu machine so I can run cad software like solid works?19:53
EriC^^no19:53
EriC^^i guess19:53
EriC^^never tried it but it's the general consensus i think19:53
ThvmhI need it for my study...19:53
EriC^^Thvmh, why don't you dual boot?19:53
ObrienDaveit works ;) not very well, but it works19:54
ObrienDavedual boot is better for SolidWorks19:54
ThvmhI´ve had problems with dual booting. Especially with windows 8 and ubuntu19:55
EriC^^what problems?19:55
ObrienDave!uefi19:56
ubottuUEFI is a specification that defines a software interface between an operating system and platform firmware. It is meant as a replacement for the BIOS. For information on how to set up and install Ubuntu and its derivatives on UEFI machines please read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI19:56
ObrienDavethat's why ^^^19:56
ThvmhIt booted in grub, then booted in the windows bootloader19:56
ThvmhSo there where 4 options19:56
EriC^^did you use wubi?19:57
ThvmhNope19:57
EriC^^ok good19:57
EriC^^you mean you got the grub menu, with ubuntu and windows?19:57
ObrienDavewubi needs to die a slow, painful death ;p19:57
EriC^^when you press ubuntu what happens?19:57
ThvmhWubi doesn´t like windows 819:57
ThvmhIt went in to the windows 8 bootloader19:58
ObrienDavewin8 does not like wubi19:58
EriC^^are you sure it was grub? was it purple?19:58
ThvmhYes19:58
ThvmhIt was a weird mess19:58
EriC^^that's really odd19:58
EriC^^try dual booting again, most likely you can sort it out19:58
ThvmhBut i´ll go and try it again maybe I´m in more luck this time19:58
ObrienDaveread the UEFI instructions before you attempt it19:59
ThvmhI don´t have an UEFI bios19:59
ThvmhOnly my server has that19:59
EriC^^Thvmh, win8 wasn't preinstalled?20:00
ThvmhNope20:00
EriC^^ok, should be pretty straight forward20:00
ThvmhAny good tutorials to follow?20:00
EriC^^not really, just partition yourself in the Something else menu..20:01
EriC^^hmm20:01
EriC^^!installing20:01
ubottuUbuntu can be installed in lots of ways. Please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation for documentation. Problems during install? See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CommonProblemsInstall - Don't want to use a CD? See http://tinyurl.com/3exghs - See also !automate20:01
EriC^^Thvmh, just make sure you remove fast boot in windows820:02
Bashing-omThvmh: Make sure Windows does not take up all 4 of the primary partitions ( BIOS based system ) .20:02
ThvmhThanks for the tips! I´ll go and try it. If anything goes wrong you´ll hear from me!20:05
AfterDarknesshello, how to fix thumbnails failing to generate?20:06
owl_flash crashes when I resize the video on youtube in firefox, please help me help myself20:07
marianne_hi guys... I would like a little input. I want to buy an older (1-2 years) laptop and i was wondering what the best brand is to install ubuntu on.20:09
todd__Any brand should work20:09
bpromptditto20:09
Dewin|workSome manufacturers even sell laptops preloaded with Ubuntu20:10
todd__Buy a cheap SSD to throw in a laptop and your set.20:10
marianne_todd__: I had a sony a while back that was pretty good, but, yeah, I'm looking more that the HCL this time and i seem to have run into a dead end... hence the question20:10
Dewin|workmarianne_:  What's your goal for the laptop?20:11
todd__^^what he said20:11
ObrienDaveget as powerful a computer as you can afford20:11
marianne_Dewin|work: basically just surf email and stuff.. nothing heavy (yeah, i was told I need to be "part of the family")20:12
ObrienDavewho's family?20:12
todd__If thats all you want then just about ANY laptop will seriously be fine20:12
todd__Save like $60 for a cheap SSD to throw in a laptop and really have it fly20:12
marianne_ObrienDave: mine, they complain because I'm not sitting out there with them at night watching tV20:13
Dewin|workYeah, there's absolutely no excuse for not having an SSD in a laptop.20:13
Dewin|workFaster?  More reliable (especially on a system that's being jostled about constantly)?  Less power draw?  All wins.20:13
marianne_do most models accept a SSD?20:14
AfterDarknesswhat about price?20:14
ObrienDaveuntil it takes a dump quicker than a HD20:14
todd__All models will accept an SSD20:14
Dewin|workAlmost* all models20:14
marianne_I can go about $300 so I was think ing used or referb20:14
Dewin|workmost that don't already have one though (some 'ultrabooks' have the SSD storage pretty much saudered into the system rather than a separate removable device)20:14
todd__SSDs don't necessarily take a dump quicker than a typical spinning hard drive20:14
AfterDarknessi dont think buying a used or referb ssd or hdd is a good idea20:15
Dewin|workI convinced my work to go to SSDs for all of our laptops after doing 3 HDD replacements in a year.20:15
marianne_I would probably get an external SSD20:15
todd__Why20:15
marianne_to be able to keep my stuff separate20:16
todd__Get a spinning external hard drive and use an SSD as an internal drive20:16
Dewin|work120GB Samsung 850 Evo SSD is $70.20:16
marianne_I know getting used or referb might not be a good idea 'cuz you might be getting someone elses issues20:16
Dewin|workif you need additional storage beyond that, spring for a bigger model or buy an external 1+ TB drive20:17
ObrienDave4tb at walmart, $13920:17
marianne_so which brand would you guys choose?20:17
todd__Never buy a used hard drive. I have 3 5TB seagate external drives for backup purposes20:17
ObrienDaveAND they are WD NAS drives20:17
evad4bI got an 5 year old probook 6450b on newegg for 200$ and it has a 128ssd and this thing is fast.20:18
diphtherialhey, i've been having an issue recently on my ubuntu server installation on a VPS where it keeps reporting that i'm out of space, yet i've run df and i should have plenty20:18
todd__Most would say samsung. I say get whatever SSD you want20:18
evad4bFirst time running a laptop with a ssd. I cant believe the difference.20:18
ObrienDavediphtherial, ask in #ubuntu-server20:18
diphtherialmy /tmp partition is kind of small, though. here's the output of df -h: https://dpaste.de/xORj20:18
diphtherialObrienDave: ah, alright; thanks20:19
todd__I have 6 PNY SSDs and one OCZ vector 150 and honestly the difference between them is only noticable in benchmarks20:19
=== gusnan is now known as Guest78362

guiteHi everyone, I’m currently trying to compile a kernel module (btusb) and it seems I have a problem with the linux-source version that doesn’t fit the kernel version of my computer => https://bpaste.net/show/51c10237a27120:19
Dewin|worktodd__:  For buying one off the shelf, the difference probably isn't huge (save for reliability), but some of the 'bundled with hardware' SSDs are surprisingly slow in my experience.20:19
tewardObrienDave: they can also ask here and get support (although server help does usually go elsewhere, yes)20:19
guiteas you can see, my version of the kernel is 3.13.0 and the kernel sources I have retrieved with « apt-get install linux-source » is 3.13.1120:20
diphtherialteward: sounds reasonable. my /tmp directory doesn't actually contain anything, though...i'll give it a shot in any case20:20
todd__What is surprisingly slow?20:20
tewarddiphtherial: i'll help ou in -server now, but i asked you a q there.  lets not crosspost anymore20:20
Dewin|worktodd__:  SSD performance20:20
marianne_think I'm going to tool around newegg and see what they have...20:20
ObrienDaveteward, well, as soon as they mention server....20:20
AfterDarknessdoes anyone know how to fix nautilus not generating thumbnails? for videos. always fail20:20
marianne_thanks guys, you gave me a starting point20:20
diphtherialteward: apologies20:20
todd__I meant more like what was the benchmarks of said slow benchmarks20:20
Dewin|workWe did an order of Dell laptops at my work.  Only a couple models could feasibly be configured with an SSD without going completely against the rest of our specifications, so I ordered the others with the cheapest HDD option they had and swapped it out for SSDs from Newegg the moment they arrived.  The speed difference was noticeable.20:21
Dewin|workNo benchmarks, just subjective data.20:21
=== Guest78362 is now known as gusnan
todd__Only time I have ever seen a slow SSD was when it was set to IDE mode or like the desktop I am on now where my crappy Asus motherboard has a shotty AHCI controller20:22
=== cdanoff_ is now known as cdanoff
Dewin|worktodd__:  Oh, it was still substantially faster than spinning rust, just... noticeably slower than the systems I manually installed SSDs in ;)20:23
todd__Ok lol. Wasn't trying to start an argument...was just curious is all20:23
Dewin|workbut I suspect most of the performance differences between similiar-tiered SSDs in a similar price range are minimal20:24
Dewin|workNow, if you go enterprise grade it's an entirely different beast, but that's also expensive.20:24
RudeViperhey guys - I have a really big problem - I am running ubuntu 14.04 server and have installed xfce4 and lightdm on it for when I need the gui - however when I tried to login I found two problems - it won't take my password for either account I have one it via the xfce login (but it will via cli and over ssh) and one of the accounts is showing up with my full name and not user name. Any idea how to fix this?????20:25
todd__True that. Although for most people there is almost zero reason to have a SLC SSD20:25
Dewin|work(when it's a PCI-E card that's internally doing 128GBx10 RAID 0, it's going to blow anything SATA-based out of the water.)20:25
todd__No doubt. All comes down to what you need your system to do20:26

huigsethj, why would you see anything on the screen? the output is written into that logfile22:57
mcphailsethj: does the script run if you add the full path for notify-send (/usr/bin/notify-send)?22:58
sethjhuig, actually, it does show the notification and create the log file..22:58
sethjmcphail, Good idea, I'll try that!22:58
sethjnope. The log file's timestamp is updated but there is no notification.23:00
=== gareth_ is now known as Guest7606
sethjhuig, just to remove all variables that may affect this I'll adjust the logging so it is unrelated to the notify-send command.23:01
mcphailsethj: if you redirect stderr to your log file, do you see anything?23:02
sethjmcphail, hm, nope. No luck :/23:03
sethj(I used 2> /path/to/log)23:03
mcphailsethj: and if yor remove the "export..." line and change to "DISPLAY-:0 notify..." as a single line?23:04
mcphailsorrt DISPLAY=:023:04
sethjmcphail, tried that already, but I will try again just to be complete.23:05
bekkssethj: you could try this, in addition: DISPLAY=... /usr/bin/notify-send ... | tee -a /your/logfile23:06
sethjHere's the latest script just so we're on the same line: http://paste.ubuntu.com/10715240/23:06
sethjStill no go :/23:06
mcphailwhich "user" runs the script?23:07
sethjmcphail, root runs it (I'm not sure I can specify that manually anyway..?)23:07
hrswhat's up23:08
sethjbekks, no difference, except that it no longer updates the log's timestamp.23:08
hrsany one alive ?23:08
mcphailsethj: ok - i think the user is the problem23:08
sethjmcphail, oh? Why's that?23:09
mcphailsethj: if you're logged in graphically, only your user can display the notification23:10
mcphailsethj: try ctrl-alt-f4 and log in as yourself23:10
mcphailsethj: type "DISPLAY=:0 notify-send "hello"" and quickly press ctrl-alt-f723:11
mcphailyou'll see the notification23:11
mcphailctrl-alt-f4 again, "sudo -i" to become root and try again. The notification won't be shown23:11
sethjyup that worked.23:12
sethjIs there a way I can specify the user from the udev rule?23:12
mcphailsethj: I don't know :)23:12
sethjOr am I going to have to do fancy switch user stuff in the script somehow?23:12
sethjmcphail, ok, I can look it up :)23:12
* mcphail always uses overly-elaborate hacks with incrontab for this sort of thing, but that is probably the wrong way23:13
sethjmcphail, yes I thought about an infinite loop or a cron job but I figured this was the right way(tm) to do this :P23:15
mcphailsethj: your hacks make my hacks look elegant ;)23:16
sethjlol23:16

Nolan_ChancellorHere is my theory on why you dick mutilating faggot freaks have such a high rate of suicide. It's because you faggots are failures at life and think transitioning is your way to start over and rebrand yourselves. After the transition, you are still a failure at life, only now you are a mutilated mutant freak as well. So you all off yourselves.23:53
