Foxhoundzhow can i get ubuntu to update itself00:16
Foxhoundzi'm on ubuntu server00:16
Foxhoundzwould a cron job executing sudo apt-get dist-upgrade suffice?00:17
blackflowFoxhoundz: don't do that. use something like apticron to notify you when updates are available, then update manually.00:18
Foxhoundzblackflow: well, i already get notification on first login via ssh00:19
Foxhoundzbut it might be week or months before i log into this box00:19
Foxhoundzso i wanted to keep it continually updated in my absence00:19
hkrrsxFoxhoundz: Please see this URL with pictures:  http://www.howtogeek.com/204796/how-to-enable-automatic-security-updates-on-ubuntu-server/00:19
blackflowFoxhoundz: so you wanna have your system changed without your being around to log in if something breaks, for weeks or months?00:23
daveomcddoes ubuntu have a command line tool to convert a file from unicode to ascii?00:23
blackflowbecause Ubuntu is not really known for rock solid super stability when updates are in question.00:23
blackflowdaveomcd: iconv00:23
daveomcdthanks!00:24
Foxhoundzblackflow: it's just a local dev/media/dns server00:24
Foxhoundzi'll know something went wrong when i can't navigate go google.com :p100:24
blackflowFoxhoundz: well, you've been warned.00:24
Foxhoundzblackflow: well, i'll just be configuring it for only security updates00:25
Foxhoundzso it shouldn't be a problem00:25
=== sleepypc is now known as `hypermist`
Foxhoundz...what could go wrong?00:28
blackflowFoxhoundz: service restart failing, reboot happening, or both happening at the wrong time00:29
hkrrsxFoxhoundz:  Power failure, wake on power, messed up kernel, server down w/ no remote capabilities and your customers are screeeeeaming at you .... losing muy pesos in the process00:30
hkrrsxI agree with blackflow's warning00:30

hkrrsxBut thanks for the correction00:31
OerHeksjust install apticron indeed to send you an email when updates are available.00:31
FoxhoundzThere are new patches almost every day00:31
Foxhoundzit might be from that ffmpeg ppa i installed00:32
blackflowFoxhoundz: btw, apticron sends you an email, so you don't have to log in to see if something's up for update00:33
blackflowoh OerHeks beat me to it :)00:33
OerHeksYou will love systemD with mir, reboots are history00:34
blackflowOerHeks: really? live kernel patching too?00:34
OerHeksJups00:34
OerHeksthat makes reboot unnessasary for the time beiing.00:35
blackflowOerHeks: it ain't april fools here any more, so I'll ask again... live kernel patching  too? :D00:35
=== mudo_ is now known as mudo
OerHeksblackflow, yes, can't find the posts i read recently00:38
blackflowOerHeks: I think you're confusing that with the UPCOMING live kernel patching capabilities in 4.000:38
blackflow(aside from current proprietary options by RedHat and, methinks, Suse?)00:38
blackflowOerHeks: still, you have to reboot to update PID 1, especially since it's now so complex.00:39
OerHeksYes, this is still the transition to mir, AFAIK00:39
blackflowOerHeks: I think you have no idea what you're talking about :)00:40

friginevening all. Just installed ubuntu 14.04 and grub did not pick up windows 8.1 trying to make it dual boot, any help? thanks in advance00:54
vince_the_ponderfrigin, do you know if it erased windows partition, is the partition type visible in cfdisk under ubuntu?00:54
stanmcmfrigin, Check this out.  http://sourceforge.net/projects/boot-repair-cd/  I've used it.  Real quick and easy to use.00:54
friginno the partition is still there. boot-repair didn't work00:55
hawlyfrigin, took a look on grub conf files?00:55
vince_the_pondersmart1, the driver support has been greatly improved over the past couple of years for wifi cards specifically so you would benefit a lot from upgrading to kali linux00:55
friginboot-repair - error GPT detected. please create a BIOS-Boot Partition etc etc00:55
frigin@hawly how do i do that00:56
friginbrb00:57
hawlyfrigin, i dont remember - but i think its easy to find - you change the file, and run a command to make grub use the new confs00:57
vince_the_ponderfrigin, if /boot partition is mounted under ubuntu, the config file is there00:57
hawlyops.. instead of "change the file", "edit the file"00:58
vince_the_ponderfrigin, the command is 'sudo update-grub'00:58
* hawly is a kind of old school00:58
smart1vince do you know sphinux OS , this OS kernel 60% hurd & 40% Linux00:59

vince_the_pondersmart1, i dont know that the difference between straight linux and hurd/linux mix really matters while pentesting. but to each their own i guess.01:00

Arrickhow do I "Map" a network drive in ubuntu?01:05
vince_the_ponderfrigin, /dev/sda2 is your windows installation partition. we need to add a line to your grub config that adds windows 8 as boot option. The problem is that grub should do this by default, and its not doing it so its better find out why instead of forcing it (grub is still working to load linux after all)01:06
gr33n7007hArrick: http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2014/08/map-network-drive-onto-ubuntu-14-04/01:06

vince_the_ponderfrigin, sorry i cant be of much help, but reading this article about archlinux + eufi explained a bit of the limitations surrounding a pre-installed windows 8 and dual booting with linux. If ubuntu did not make special accomodations for dual booting, you may need to re-install grub as a eufi-gpt install instead of mbr-dos install01:14

Arrickok.. how about how do I map a network drive during a single session...., I have to connect to the VPN before mapping it.01:23
BradleyHas anyone had an issue with any linux distro installing to a usb drive?01:23
BradleyI tried installing Arch, then OpenSUSE, and I'm downloading LXLE right now. The first two distros gave errors when trying to install :/01:24
Viqtawhich errors?01:25
BradleyArchLinux said "can't find /dev/sda on /etc/fstab" when trying to mount the root partition01:25
Bradleyand OpenSUSE said that it couldn't locate some boot file. So I never even got to partitioning with that one01:26

BradleyI got Arch from the source's distro page. but i used LiveLinux USB to download OSuse01:27

BradleyViqta: so I'm trying to make a Live USB so I can install linux on another USB. would it be better to launch the install from within Windows, or just boot up from the LiveUsb to install01:38
Ben64you can't launch an install from windows01:38
Viqtayou cant do that, when you burn the iso on the flash then you shutdown the pc01:39
Bradleyyou can't use VMware to make a bootable linux usb?01:39

BradleyI know how to do that :/ I want the OS on the USB, but I'm having issues with the LiveUSB to use for the install01:40
CptRageToasterBradley: Are you creating a bootable usb ON a different bootable USB?01:41
Viqtayou want an OS on the flash drive, that is fairly easy, you just search for your distro of choice and download the file01:41
Viqtait will give more instructions on there01:41
BradleyO_0  I just want one USB with Linux on it that will load the actual OS instead of the annoying "do you want to install" menu01:41
CptRageToasterOh... that's probabyl distro specific...01:42
CptRageToasterproabably*01:42
CptRageToasterlet's go have a look01:42
Ben64Bradley: you probably want the live usb01:42
Bradleymaking a LiveUSB is just the prep for the os installation though... right?01:43
Viqtawhen you burn it on the usb thats all, you will be choosing try (distro name here)01:43

CptRageToasterircfox: You can scan yourself ._.01:45
Bradleyokay so now I want to know if it would be better to make a LiveUSB and use it inside of VMware that way I can report any errors that someone knows how to read? :/01:45
ircfoxCptRageToaster: how?01:45
Ben64Bradley: why use a usb in vmware at all?01:45
CptRageToasterircfox: I'm... not 100% telling someone how to run a deep port scan over IRC01:45
Viqtain vmware you dont need a live usb, you just install it on the vmware01:46
Ben64ircfox: use nmap01:46
CptRageToaster^01:46
BradleyBen64: I'm sorry... I can't. I've been explaining that for a little while now01:46

Ben64Bradley: you can't what? you haven't explained anything01:46
CptRageToasterand you want to "test it in VMPlayer"01:46
ircfoxShouldn't I be using something as iptable or something?01:46
CptRageToastercorrect?01:46

CptRageToasterBradley: You can... but why go to all the trouble of emulating a PC with a USB stack, when you can just see if it boots?01:47
ircfoxBen64: I won't be scanning a port from outside.01:47
Viqtain vmware you dont need live usb to try out oss on there. u just install them on there01:47
BradleyBen64: I've been explainging it before you asked me. I think you may have joined in late01:47
CptRageToasterViqta: He's not installing anything IN vmplayer01:47

Ben64Bradley: you really didn't. how about you stop arguing and explain what you want all on one line01:48
BradleyCptRageToaster: i actually don't have VMware at the moment. I was asking what I should do.01:48
Viqtabut it does not hurt to try,01:48
CptRageToasterBradley: Just see if you can boot the thing01:48
degvathey have ended support to it, and works only on 14.10 - thing is that 14.10 doesn't work good for me :/01:49
Viqtadont use vmware, if you have a flash drive you can use it to dualboot which is fairly easy that vmware01:49
CptRageToasterViqta: ...01:49
BradleyCptRageToaster: I'll be back if I have more issues.01:49
CptRageToasterMemoryMan: ls -al in the directory please?01:49
CptRageToasterMemoryMan: Sounds like a permissions issue01:49
BradleyViqta: Thanks for trying. I don't think I know how to word my issue properly, but I'll return if something bad happens01:50
CptRageToasterircfox: I don't know enough about asking LINUX how it's doing network wise...01:50
CptRageToasterbut the.... knee jerk reponse, is to ask something outside the server to hit every port01:50
CptRageToasterthen you know whats open01:50
CptRageToasterand what's not01:50
MemoryManCptRageToaster: http://pastebin.com/b1VmKNuM01:50
Viqtamy opinion is that if you have flash drive use it to dualboot instead of vmware, that seems easier and has a comminity support compared to when you will use vmware because people will be saying its the other party's fault and the likes01:51
Guest21477I installed the Nvidia drivers from their website using the .run file, but now when I boot up the login screen is just black with the cursor :c01:51

CptRageToasterthat's odd01:51
Ben64looks like it has a space in the name01:52
MemoryManBen64: Hmm good catch...no idea why that is there01:52
ircfoxBen64: I use nping and it fails when I use my ISP but outside as in my UNI it works. Perhaps my ISP is blocking some hight ports. I already port-forward the port at my modem.01:52
CptRageToasterBen64: Good catch!01:53
MemoryManBen64: Using a text editor and it has never done that before01:53
CptRageToasterMemoryMan: Easiest fix, open the file in a text editor, and file-save-as without a space in the name01:53
MemoryManYeah I fixed it now, just had no idea why it did that01:53
Ben64ircfox: you would have to talk to your isp about that01:54
CptRageToasterwell... someone put the space there :)01:54
ircfoxBen64: my ISP is a robot.01:54
MemoryManMaybe it's a bug in the latest update because I don't think I'd make that mistake twice haha01:54

BradleyBen64: really? O_002:08
BradleyBen64: even if I use it to write code in? I'm not planning on doing anything major like gaming or anything02:09
Ben64yeah, usb drives are slow02:09
Ben64just dual boot, or make a live usb with persistence02:10
Arrickyeah, I wouldnt use a USB drive ro run my os02:10
Bradleythen why would other people suggest it?02:10
Viqtalet me get this straight you have booted into linux and you want to install it on another usb permanently, hard to understand that02:10
Ben64nobody did02:10
Desubecause they are silly02:10
Arrickbecause they are ok with sub par performance.02:10
BradleyBen64: not here. in general I've been recommended to do that02:10
Viqtayes, daul boot is even easier. please do that02:10
Arrickor are teachers in a school... those that do, dont teach, those that dont, teach.02:11
Desuif you don't have a partition to spare, then you can use a VM to play around in02:11
Desuit has some downsides compared to running on real hardware, but it is generally fine02:11
Viqtayou can partition the drive for a linux os, it does not need that much memory02:11
Bradley:/ well, how much persistance would a liveUSB need if it's 16gb (14.5gb is recognized by windows)02:12
zacharypchhi -- so i tried to install texmaker today, which had about .7GB of dependencies, and the internet connection dropped out in the middle, now when I do`apt-get update`, i get this "E: Method https has died unexpectedly!", E: Sub-process https received a segmentation fault."02:12
Ben64Bradley: it doesn't "need" any02:12
zacharypchi've tried autoremove, autoclean, clean, etc etc, i'm already approaching reinstall as a solution02:12
zacharypchanyone have any other ideas?02:12
BradleyBen64: isn't persistence used to "remember" changes I've made to Linux?02:13

* Jake grumbles at cfhowlett15:16
cfhowlettJake, sorry.  fat finger tourettes.  the msg was intended for jakey2 ...15:17
rgb-onechotaz`work: The idea here is to open the downloaded file with the default application on your system, eg. a pdf with evince, a .doc file with libreoffice etc.15:18
chotaz`workrgb-one, every file type I try to open from chrome gets redownloaded and the same does not happen in firefox15:19
rgb-onechotaz`work: yea15:19
cfhowlettchotaz, you have to edit your chrome settings15:20
rgb-onechotaz`work: The file associations for chrome need to be changed15:21
rgb-onechotaz`work: it seems chrome has priority in opening files over all other programs installed on the system15:22
GoodbarFolks, I'm having a serious problem with chroot and trying to unmount /proc after I'm done with the chroot. May I have your attention?15:24
jhutchinsGoodbar: 1) Do not ask #debian for Ubuntu support, what fixes Debian can break Ubuntu, they are different distributions.  2) What problem?15:25
jhutchinsGoodbar: What did you try to do?  How did you try to do it?  What did you expect to happen?  What happened instead?15:25
rgb-onechotaz`work: do you have xdg-open installed?15:26
jhutchinsGoodbar: In channel please.15:28
chotaz`workrgb-one, cfhowlett : There is no file-type associations options in Chrome. And my files open normally from the file manager or from Firefox's "download manager". I'm not the most fluent on Linux/Ubuntu or Web Browsers, but I'm not making much sense out of this :\15:28
chotaz`workrgb-one, Not right now, but I'll take a look.15:28
jhutchinsGoodbar: Generally for a chroot you should mount the special filesystems like /proc from the real root, then chroot, then exit, then unmount.15:29
chotaz`workI'll try a google related channel, as my problems seems to be with chrome specifically.15:31
DemHydrazchotaz`work, then use firefox.15:31
chotaz`workDemHydraz, I intend on changing since they are completely dropping NPAPI support, but I'm puzzled by trivial things I don't understand, and this has not happened to me before.15:33
cfhowlettchotaz, chrome settings has file associations somewhere, I don't use it though.15:34
rgb-onechotaz`work: right click on a file and go to 'Open with...' do you see chrome at the top? if so that is the problem.15:34
chotaz`workrgb-one, that is not the case at all. As i've stated, files open where they should when I open them from the file manager or other file handling applications. My problem is SPECIFICALLY when opening files from within chrome.15:36
chotaz`workcfhowlett, I'll take a closer look then, might have missed it.15:36
cfhowlettchotaz`work, confirm:  chrome NOT chromium?15:36

rgb-oneskinux: by setting the permissions of WebProjects to the same as var/www, which requires root access, you will never have access to the content of WebProjects without using sudo15:55

JunkHunkmcphail,  the point is I am having issues with mono libraries and someone told me the application I am using those with would stop crashing when using the server kernel16:31
chotaz`workthe lubuntu metapackage should install anything lubuntu related, DE, core and the bundled packages aswell16:31

omgitsmitarea51pilot: ensure the trackpad is clear of debris22:27
area51pilotomgitsmit, its nothing like that. Actually its a new ultrabook. I tried syndaemon and it worked for a day or so then after a system reload it wont seem to work22:29
area51pilotalso tried touchpad-indicator22:29
Jordan_UDumle29: I think you should have gnome-session-startup installed, and the fact that it is not installed may be why you were having trouble adding a new startup entry earier.22:29
omgitsmit"system reload"?22:30
Dumle29Jordan_U: Okay. will try and install it and see what happens :)22:30
area51pilotI beta tested 15.04 then went back to 14.0422:30
Jordan_UDumle29: "gnome-session" being the actual package name you want to install.22:30
omgitsmitarea51pilot: so you're looking to reinstall the software?22:30
Dumle29Jordan_U: Gotcha :)22:30
area51pilotwiped and re-encrypted drive22:31
Dumle29gnome-session is already the newest version.22:31
Dumle29Jordan_U: ^ should I try just and install the missing program?22:31
area51pilotomgitsmit, 14.04 is fully installed and updated. I added syndaemon -i 1.0 -d to startup apps but it doesnt seem to stop the cursor from jumping while I type22:32
Jordan_UDumle29: And it depends on gnome-session-bin, which provides the gnome-session-properties (on 14.04 at least).22:32
murrdawgHas anyone used nvflash?22:32
omgitsmitarea51pilot: do you see it running at startup properly?22:32
murrdawgI'm having issues that it's not actually running, just keeps listing what you can do with it22:33
omgitsmitmurrdawg: because you have to actually tell it what to do with the additional flags/cmds22:33
area51pilotomgitsmit, the process is running22:33
omgitsmitarea51pilot: then the software should do its thing, short of that i wouldnt know22:33
omgitsmitarea51pilot: but more importantly, are aliens really real? /s22:34
Dumle29Jordan_U: Can I query you with a pastebin list of all installed gnome packages?22:34
murrdawgomgitsmit: I did..... http://pastebin.com/ejn4evDp22:34
area51pilotomgitsmit, yeah .. its not ... Ive even disable the option is touchpad settings so they dont conflict22:34
omgitsmitarea51pilot: try stopping it and starting it back up manually?22:35
area51pilotomgitsmit, ...thats funny ... Im actually watching Ancient Aliens right noww  :P22:35
Dumle29Jordan_U: Nvm, just posting it here: http://paste.ubuntu.com/10726962/22:35
area51pilotomgitsmit, doesnt change, even tried different flags and times22:35
omgitsmitarea51pilot: doh22:35
omgitsmitarea51pilot: does the software log anything?22:36
omgitsmitmaybe its erroring out somewhere22:36
murrdawgomgitsmit: And even with that command with the proper sbk, it still just lists the options and commands22:36
omgitsmitmurrdawg: one or more of your commands is not the proper syntax22:36
omgitsmitmurrdawg: try one by one until you figure out which one it doesnt like22:36
murrdawgomgitsmit: but even ./nvflash --help doesn't even go22:37
omgitsmitmurrdawg: you said it was displaying all the possible commands, thats the --help output.22:37
area51pilotomgitsmit, area51pilot@area51:~$ ps -ef | grep syndaemon22:38
area51pilotarea51p+  2481  1987  0 17:16 ?        00:00:00 syndaemon -i 0.75 -d22:38
area51pilotarea51p+  4023  3968  0 17:38 pts/0    00:00:00 grep --color=auto syndaemon22:38
omgitsmitarea51pilot: -d = daemon?22:39
Jordan_UDumle29: Please run "gnome-session-properties" and pastebin the exact output.22:39
omgitsmitarea51pilot: running it non daemon will display what the app is doing verbosely22:39
omgitsmitarea51pilot: maybe then you can verify if its even triggering the touchpad protection while typing22:40
Dumle29Jordan_U: http://pastebin.com/X6n41BJx22:40
omgitsmitarea51pilot: could have something over in /var/logs as well22:40
Dumle29Jordan_U: The last line is because I tried to pipe it into pastebinit22:41
Dumle29Jordan_U: So I tried "gnome-session-properties | pastebinit" but I guess it didn't pipe it22:41
Jordan_UDumle29: Your list of installed packages at http://paste.ubuntu.com/10726962/ includes gnome-session-bin , so it's odd that you're being asked to install gnome-session-bin.22:41
area51pilotomgitsmit, yes -d = daemon22:42
omgitsmitarea51pilot: kill the process and fire it back up in term without daemon, see what its up to :)22:42
Dumle29Jordan_U: I got that list with "dpkg --get-selections | grep -v deinstall | grep gnome" Is that not right?22:42
omgitsmitarea51pilot: do you have a mouse plugged in by any chance? do you think it will affect the triggering if it detects one preset?22:44
area51pilotomgitsmit, doesnt even seem to start22:44
omgitsmitarea51pilot: well there's your problem ;)22:44
area51pilotomgitsmit, no mouse22:44
Jordan_UDumle29: Try running "sudo apt-get install gnome-session-bin" just for completeness' sake. The worst it will do is mark gnome-session-bin as manually installed.22:44
Dumle29gnome-session-bin is already the newest version.22:45
Dumle29So yeah that is weird22:45
omgitsmitits the newest version, so you for that going for ya22:45
Jordan_UDumle29: ls -l /usr/bin/gnome-session-properties22:45
omgitsmitgot*22:45
area51pilotomgitsmit, Im kinda lost now. Dont understand why the terminal hangs and it wont run22:46
Dumle29Jordan_U: ls: cannot access /usr/bin/gnome-session-properties: No such file or directory22:46
area51pilotomgitsmit, even using sudo doesnt change anything22:47
omgitsmitarea51pilot: "hangs"? maybe its actually running, just no verbose in terminal.22:47
Jordan_UDumle29: dpkg -L gnome-session-bin22:47
omgitsmitarea51pilot: tack on a -v or --v22:47
Dumle29Jordan_U: http://paste.ubuntu.com/10727030/22:47
Jordan_UDumle29: apt-cache policy gnome-session-bin22:49
Dumle29Jordan_U: http://paste.ubuntu.com/10727043/22:49
area51pilotomgitsmit, it s still not doing what it shouldshows its enabling and disabling but in reality it22:51
Jordan_UDumle29: It seems there is a difference between the gnome-session-bin provided in Ubuntu's default repositories and that found in the gnome3-team ppa.22:51
omgitsmitarea51pilot: you can try to contact the developer of the software22:52
Dumle29Jordan_U: Hmm I just remembered I did an apt-get purge on a package i installed quite a while ago, And I think that took the package manager with it too. Could it have removed gnome-session-properties too?22:52
=== Codmadnesspro is now known as Guest2848
Jordan_UDumle29: No. As I said, we're running into a differnce between Ubuntu's official package and the one from that ppa.22:53
Dumle29Jordan_U: Oh ok. What to do? Try and dissable the ppa?22:54
area51pilotomgitsmit, I guess thats my next route22:54
Jordan_UDumle29: Try asking in #ubuntu-gnome .22:55
omgitsmitarea51pilot: continue to mess with it, im sure you'll figure out whats happening22:55
Dumle29Jordan_U: Will do :)22:55

danleyHi, I have my ubuntu set up and running for years now and it works great. but I am trying stuff with PXE booting now and installed dnsmasq for that purpose. And it creates an issue with dns for me... I set dnsmasq to port=0 to disable all dns functionality but as soon as i start it my nameserver is set to localhost instead of what is set in /etc/network/interfaces. what am I doing wrong?23:16
ObrienDavemessing with a working system? ;P23:18
omgitsmitha!23:18
omgitsmitdanley: my nameserver defaults to something like 127.0.1.1 automatically23:18
omgitsmitits part of the if upstart i think23:19

omgitsmitdanley: line #1723:20
omgitsmitand 1123:20
omgitsmitand 523:20
danleyomgitsmit: yes? I don't touch that file. I just print it23:20
danleyall I do is start dnsmasq and it overwrites it, it seems23:20
danleyfor completeness, the network interface is a static config in /etc/network/interfaces with static dns-nameserver. which is all configured correctly as long as dnsmasq is off23:23
omgitsmitdanley: ive never used dnsmasq, im reading up on it right now23:24
omgitsmitdanley: which interfaces are you using in your conf?23:25
danleyonly have one interface, p33p123:26
omgitsmitUsing dnsmasq to cache DNS queires for the local machine?23:26
danleyomgitsmit: I don't want to do any of that. just want to use it as a dhcp proxy. don't want any dns stuff on that machine.23:28

omgitsmitdanley: where in that patebin is the problem exactly?23:31
omgitsmitit looks like its turning itself on and off just ifne23:31
ZerockWhat's the difference between linux-generic and linux-image-generic?23:32
danleyomgitsmit: after I start dnsmasq in line 7 my nameserver is set to localhost in line 12. turning it off in line 13 makes the nameserver correct in line 1823:32
omgitsmitdanley: when dnsmasq starts, it starts cache dns forwarding23:33
omgitsmitso it points localhost23:33
omgitsmitdanley: is that dhcp-range correct?23:35
omgitsmitits a single ip, not a range.23:35
omgitsmitand you're not defining lease time23:35
omgitsmitor interface23:35
omgitsmitdefault is #dhcp-range=192.168.0.50,192.168.0.150,12h23:36
omgitsmitbut you can preceed it with actual interface for more advanced setups23:36
omgitsmiti.e. #dhcp-range=eth0,192.168.0.50,192.168.0.150,12h23:36

omgitsmitdanley: i mean, does dns work when its using local cache via dnsmasq?23:42
omgitsmitdanley: i dont see a dig or nslookup test in your pastebin23:42
danleyomgitsmit: no. the port=0 option in dnsmaq.conf disables all dns functionality according to man page.23:43
murrdawgHas anybody flashed a tablet from Linux on here?23:43
danleyand I stumbled upon this problem when apt couldn't resolve ubuntu.com23:43
k1l_murrdawg: depends heavily on the exact tablet.#23:44
omgitsmitwill it work if we comment out line 25?23:44
murrdawgk1l_: Acer A50023:44
scheungucsf23:44
k1l_murrdawg: ubuntu ships adb and fastboot. if the tablet can handle that its eas23:46
k1l_y23:46
murrdawgk1l_ I'm trying to use nvflash23:47
k1l_murrdawg: i dont know for the acer tablets. maybe you have more luck asking the community from the tablet about experience with flashing it from ubuntu23:49
danleyomgitsmit: rebooting atm. testing it soon. but I know the problem now. resolveconf and dnsmasq are integrated. by default /etc/resolv.conf will be set to localhost when dnsmasq starts and dnsmasq will use /var/run/dnsmasq/resolve.conf to read the upstream dns servers that are provded to it by resolveconf23:49
murrdawgk1l_: I'd do it from Windows, but Windows doesn't recognize the tablet. Wasn't sure if someone in here had done it before with Ubuntu. I'm a n00b when it comes to Linux, but I'm determined to get this tablet up and going again23:50
murrdawgk1l_: As long as I can find out how to flash the acer, I'd be good23:50

k1l_murrdawg: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1710755  works with adb and fastboot which you can install with ubuntu from the repos.23:51
