dazdarylI'm going with the 14.04 LTS00:00
mrkrampsswap is a bit more tricky … with 24GB RAM and no suspend to disk you could even dare to run linux w/o swap at all00:00
dazdarylyeah i just read that mrkramps00:00
mrkrampsand if it does not work w/o swap you may add a swap file at any time00:00
dazdaryl~ i really liked arch00:01
dazdarylbut after not using it for 8months00:01
dazdarylgo back and the rolling release is so out of date that it wont work00:01
knomeEnkidu_ak, i don't know for fact, but you can do this and that with it00:01
dazdarylare you a gamer mrkramps?00:02
mrkrampsdazdaryl, no really00:02
mrkramps*not00:02
knomedazdaryl, mrkramps: we have #xubuntu-offtopic for general chatter. welcome! :)00:02
mrkrampsknome, good to know, thx00:02
dazdarylok00:03
dazdarylwell the thing I liked about arch was that it always had the latest of everything, so i suppose on xubuntu i will have to compile everything myself if I want the latest?00:05
dazdarylbecause I need the latest versions of blender, gimp and krita00:05
mrkrampsblender is not an issue, because it comes in a pre-compiled archive00:06
dazdaryltrue00:06
mrkrampsgimp and krita latest needs manual compilation or - if available - a PPA00:06
dazdarylyeah, is there a way to automate that from GIT?00:07
dazdarylprobably could just write my own script to do that00:07
mrkrampsyes, script will do the trick00:08
mrkrampscronjob may be helpful as well00:11
dazdarylahhhh FANTASTIC00:11
dazdarylevery thing went well no problem00:12
dazdaryljust overwrite my old manjaro00:12
dazdarylall good00:12
dazdarylwindows and xubuntu both good00:12
mrkrampsglad to hear that00:12
dazdarylwhat I really look forward to is using a decent search function again00:13
dazdaryland multiple tabs in the file browser00:13
dazdaryla real terminal :)00:13
dazdaryldo you usually use aptitude or do you generally compile things yourself?00:15
mrkrampsno aptitude, apt-get is the default tool, and I do both00:16
knomedazdaryl, i kind of pointed you to the offtopic channel because that's where the non-support discussions should generally fall into00:16
dazdarylsorry knome, I knew games was off-topic but i thought discussions about package management and apt-get was on-topic00:18
knomedazdaryl, i guess it's a fine line, but general discussion that is not a support question is always welcome in offtopic00:18
dazdarylok so I'm trying to setup my "start menu"00:33
dazdarylor my whisker menu to be specific00:34
dazdaryland i want to change the terminal emulator link to xfce4-terminal00:34
mrkrampsit should be xfce4-terminal by default00:34
dazdarylnah it wasn't but i got it00:35
mrkrampsyou can set default terminal in Preferred Applications → Utilities00:36
mrkrampsor global with: sudo update-alternatives --config x-terminal-emulator00:37
dazdarylyeah i got that one thanks kramps00:37
dazdarylnow i want to make it drop down from the top00:37
dazdaryli've done it before00:37
dazdaryllike guake does00:37
mrkrampsdon't think it can be done with xfce4-terminal … just install guake, tilda or yakuake00:40
mrkrampsah, sorry … i am wrong00:41
Unit193--drop-down00:42
dazdarylcool thx00:49
dazdarylis there a way to check the version of something with apt-cache PACKAGE? or apt-get01:00
dazdaryloh sorry nvm01:01
dazdarylxubuntu allready ahs01:01
dazdarylhas01:01

dazdarylwhere do i change the color of window borders?01:10
holsteindazdaryl: see if the theme manager does what you are looking for01:10
Unit193Window Manager has them.01:24
dazdaryl  hmm my drop-down terminal lets me move it01:33
dazdaryland i dont want that01:33
dazdarylas if it was anormal window01:33
TrinityI've been trying to log in to my desktop computer but xubuntu is freezing at the loading portion. the loading circle isn't moving. Keyboard numlock does work01:34
TrinityI tried rebooting from a live usb drive but same issue01:34
Trinityany help?01:34
dazdarylwell i can just turn off show menubar then01:34
dazdarylsounds pretty strange trinity01:35
holsteinTrinity: try booting the older kernel in the grub menu01:35
Trinityholstein, same issue01:38
Trinityis my ssd fried?01:38
holsteinTrinity: i dont know.. if it is, you wont "fix" it with software..01:38
Trinityholstein, any way to check?01:38
Unit193!xhangs01:38
ubottuIf the GUI hangs after logging in, use <ctrl><alt><f1> to switch to text mode. Log in and do: rm .{X,ICE}authority01:39
holsteinTrinity: if you think it is, i would test that.. i would load a live iso and run a test.. otherwise, i try and get into the recovery kernel01:39
Unit193Trinity: Check syslog and dmesg?01:39
Trinityholstein, i can't run a live iso, that hangs too01:39
holsteinTrinity: then, it sounds like you have bad hardware01:39
holsteinmaybe bad ram.. etc..01:39
Trinitytested ram01:40
Unit193That doesn't sound good.01:40
holsteinTrinity: how? what boots for you to test ram?01:40
holsteinanyways, i would not try and fix xubuntu if *nothing* boots.. i would look at my hardware01:40
Trinityi was running a unstable data scraper before this happened01:40
Trinityholstein, if i press esc before boot it direts me to grub01:40
Trinitywhich I can go to shell01:41
Trinitythrough recovery01:41
holsteinTrinity: cool.. and running the rm command above from there? what happens?01:41
holsteinlooking at the logs from there that Unit193 suggested..01:41
Trinityholstein, i just copied the syslog over01:50
Trinityand the new syslog doesnt log that error01:50
holsteinTrinity: over what?01:50
Trinitybacked it up*01:50
Trinityte new syslog only shows me going to recovery shell01:50
holsteincool.. if its my machine, i get *something* booting on it01:50
holsteinyou say, live iso's dont boot, i want to know why.. and i want to see one running on it..01:51
Trinity?01:51
Trinityok ill try01:51
holstein21:38 < ubottu> If the GUI hangs after logging in, use <ctrl><alt><f1> to switch to text mode. Log in and do: rm .{X,ICE}authority01:51
holsteinim assuming you already tried that ^01:51
DazPettyso it it called zoo-buntu or shoe-buntu?01:51
Trinityyea01:51
DazPettybecause I say shoe for xubuntu01:52
holsteinsay what you like.. most say "zubuntu", or "ex-ubuntu".. its basically xfce + ubuntu.. if you feel "shoe" somehow fits that, and you want to say it, im sure you wont get a fine in the mail..01:52
Unit193Technically 'zoo-buntu' is correct.01:53
holsteini say zubuntu01:53
Trinityholstein, not sure if it helps but heres something i found rsyslogd-2039: could no open output pipe '/dev/xconsole': No such file or directory01:57
holsteinTrinity: it really wouldnt help me, *if* i cant boot a live iso.. if its a "known good" live iso, that i *know* boots on my hardware, and my hardware supports, then, i konw its a problem with the hardware, not the installed OS01:58
Trinityholstein, will a live usb boot if i remove all hdd drives?01:59
DazPettyi suppose I don't need to get a ppa for steam because it will update automaticle01:59
holsteinTrinity: thats the question.. and why would you need to remove the hard drives? i mean, you booted *some* live environment to install the os, correct? the hard drive would have been in then02:00
holstein!steam02:00
ubottuValve have officially announced that they are developing Steam and are working with !ubuntu during their development, see http://blogs.valvesoftware.com/linux/steamd-penguins/ for further details, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Valve for install instructions, you can also join #ubuntu-steam for discussion.02:00
holsteinDazPetty: i thought steam was in the partner repo.. but, i have added the .deb from steam, in the past02:00
DazPettyfar out it's the first day and it looks like its going to break fml02:10
DazPettyall i want is steam02:10
DazPettyand updated versions of software02:10
DazPettyhaving this prob02:10
DazPettyhttp://askubuntu.com/questions/402066/steam-needs-libgl1-mesa-drii386-libgl1-mesa-glxi38602:10
holsteinDazPetty: steam supports ubuntu02:10
holsteinanyways, you can add whatever PPA they suggest.. thats what i did..02:11
DazPettyyeah this turd says i need to kill the ppas cos they are not "multiarch"02:11
holsteinDazPetty: that "question" is about 13.1002:11
DazPettywell it's the same problem02:11
holsteinDazPetty: is it?02:11
holsteinDazPetty: what problem are you having?02:11
DazPettyfarrrk02:13
DazPettythat just destroyed everything02:14
holsteinDazPetty: what just destroyed what?02:14
holstein!info steam02:14

DazPettywell krita which i just installed is gone02:14
DazPettythe software center is gone fsr02:14
holsteinDazPetty: it should be as simple as "sudo apt-get install steam", or use the package manager of your choise02:14
holsteinchoice*02:15
holsteini suggested synaptic earlier, as a GUI package manager.. maybe you missed that..02:16
holsteini think its handier than the software center at finding versions.. etc02:16

DazDaryland that just caused everything to fall like a pack of cards02:23
DazDarylI just thought it would be nice to have the newer version02:23
holsteinDazDaryl: if you want a "stable" os, use the supported packages, until you find you need something a ppa facilitates..02:23
DazDarylallthough I wont know that that was the problem untill I reinstall everything02:24
DazDarylyeah well i wont be playing games with the desktop environment02:24
DazDarylwhat is xfce/kde called? the type of program?02:24
DazDarylanyway its changing that desktop/window manager that's killed my every other time02:25
holsteinyou said it was the desktop environment02:25
holsteinDazDaryl: are you coming from windows?02:25
DazDarylyeah mostly02:25
DazDarylI've used ubuntu for about 6 months a year ago and arch for another 9 months or so02:26
holsteinif so try using xubuntu as you did windows.. think about how long you used it "as-is".. and how long til you installed *any* "beta" software,... for example, never adding any experiemental GUI packages02:26
holsteinthink about getting aquanted with it, and plan for failure02:26
holsteintest with the live iso's as much as possible.. run a version in VM that you "break" first..02:26
DazDarylwell i guess the ppa are not as well supported as the official repositories on arch are02:27
holsteinDazDaryl: no.. they are, as stated above *not* supported in any way02:27
holsteinthey are unofficial, and you click through a warning to install them02:27
DazDarylwell in some cases like krita I NEED to use the ppda02:29
DazDaryl*ppa02:30
DazDarylI cant do graphics and game dev on shitty old software02:30
DazDarylwhich was why I always hated ubuntu02:30
holsteinDazDaryl: sure, but, you are always welcome to maintain your own PPA, or build what you need from scratch02:30

knobGood morning everyone!  o/11:34
pjotterI have a peculiar bug in Xubuntu. When you click on a panel-item, most of them will have a popupwindow. This window is aligned to the edge of the panel. But in some applications, when the information in the popup is updated and the menu gets longer or shorter, the popup is not aligned to the panel anymore. Sometimes this causes the popupmenu to overlap the panel and sometimes this causes the popup to hover above the panel.12:24
pjotterDoes anybody know of this is an issue with xfce or with the application in question?12:24
pjotterI found this to be the case with the network-icon. So for example, when the list of wifi connections is updated, the popup is misaligned.12:26

mrkrampsDazPetty, if syntax is correct you only have to take care of the numbering23:52
DazPettyok, so it has 10-evdev and 11 something there23:52
mrkrampsthe number prefix depends on when you want this config to be loaded23:53
DazPettyah23:53
