Bashing-ommamece2: Not much help, sorry .. all I can think of now is to see what results if a Xorg.con file were created .. and that as said will be a steep learning curve in todays DKMS (Dynamic Kernal Mode Setting ) world .00:04

Patrick_Hi, when my PC boots it makes it to the Xubuntu splash and after that the screen is all black (with backlight). My hypothesis is that I messed up xorg; the last thing I did was put some lines in xorg.conf to try to it going to sleep, and I assume because of what I did the session is now permanently asleep or whatever when it boots. I need a way to change that config file back to default, I assume I will need a liveCD although I don'00:17

Guest21477Does anyone know why hitting shutdown always logs me out? Using Ubuntu 14.0400:47
nicomachuswhat do you mean "hitting shutdown"?00:48
nicomachusYour computer's power button?00:48
Guest21477No, I mean shutdown within the unity menu in the upper right hand corner. Not sure what it's called.00:49
Guest21477The physical shutdown button works correctly, just seems to be the menu option that's being a pain00:50
nicomachusyou selected "Shut Down" from the drop-down menu and it logs you out instead of shutting down?00:50
Guest21477Yes00:50
OerHeksNormally you would get a confirmation window, shutdown or reboot00:50
Guest21477I'm aware00:50
nicomachusDoes it give any confirmation window before logging out, or does it just automatically log out?00:51
nicomachusand is it locking or logging out when you select Shut Down?00:51

Guest21477That is odd00:56
Guest21477I'll hop over later and report it and see if it's a legit issue00:56
nicomachushold up there's a solution00:56
hkrrsxBack in the AM ....00:56
Guest21477Ah, what is it?00:57
nicomachus"This is because the lightdm user (which the greeter runs as) does not have permission to shutdown while sessions are open. Inside a normal session this would just return you to the login screen.00:57
nicomachusThe solution is either for the indicator to say "not allowed" or to run a PolicyKit frontend in the greeter than can get the required permissions to perform the shutdown."00:57
Guest21477Ah, that makes sense00:58

TheC4meldaftykins: Do you think it's just a bad installation of Firefox? Maybe reinstalling might fix it?02:32
Bashing-omQuenz: There is one viable - I stress viable - option IF a proprietary driver is required. release 12.04.1 has the Xserver version that AMD still supports . AMD dropped support for all later versions of xserver .02:32

Ben64Bashing-om: 12.04.1 is not current02:35
daftykinshrmm, must be tedious to keep that up to date manually02:35
Pinchiukasdadis, daftykins: they use OpenVZ and it uses preconfigured templates. Do you really think they're going to go out of their way to reconfigure their entire hosting platform so that it'd meet my needs?02:36

Ben64Pinchiukas: "unnecessary packages" is something only you can decide02:36
Bashing-omBen64: yeah, and no .. release 12.04 is supported 'till 2017, and if ine installs 12.04.1 then it has the X-server v1.12 . And so long as HWE is not enabled will remain on that X-server . Update as normal and no problem.02:40
blackmatrix_nyAny idea why my telnet -a command takes longer...Its much faster on unix servers02:40

Ben64Pinchiukas: yep, ubuntu comes with a default set of packages, different sets depending on flavour, you're free to add or remove what you want02:50
johanok02:50
PinchiukasBen64: the default contains a huge amount of crap most people will never use.02:58
OerHeksPinchiukas, those 'crap' does not take much space and is conveniant for most users.02:59

Seveasmaybe it's not Arch that was unstable, but your hardware :)16:54

Guest21477Hey, so my /var/log folder has 224.6 GB worth of data in it. Is this normal? Ubuntu has only been installed for a week, I'm using 14.0418:35
eletiousGuest21477: O.O18:36
bubbakkennethvenken: and the crtl Alt F6 also doesn't work for you?18:36
darius93Guest21477, doesnt sound normal at all18:36
darius93is it a web server?18:36
verdePwhat are you logging? xD18:36
Guest21477darius93: nope, just my home laptop18:36
Guest21477I'm not logging anything manually .-.18:37
darius93Guest21477, what file has the most data in it?18:37
ianorlinGuest21477: I like ncdu as a ncurses utility to check disk usage although a GUI might be better for a begginer18:37
darius93my /var/log has 9M in it and it been up for over a few months18:38
kennethvenkenbubbak: i don't think that works. I'll try it18:38
Guest21477darius93: syslog.4.gz is using 4.9GB by itself18:38
faugusztinGuest21477: probably something is being logged over and over ?18:39
faugusztinGuest21477: maybe some hard drive issue or whatever18:39
Guest21477darius93:  oh damn, kern.log is using 213.3GB18:39
darius93Guest21477, what did you install within the past week? it might be a driver or kernel issue18:39
darius93O.O18:39

darius93^^18:40
faugusztinsleeping hard drive, EDID problems, firewall hammering from outside, it could be anything18:40

Guest21477Is it safe to delete kern.log? I think it's just repeated old driver problems I fixed a few days ago18:40
kennethvbubbak: Just tried the the alt+f6, didn't work, had to reboot18:43
hkrrsxGuest21477: It would be better to fix the problems being reported in kern.log and then zero it out ...... but DO NOT delete it18:43

hkrrsxGuest21477: Here's a link on how to zero out a log file, however doing so erases the contents of the file without deleting the file (or ownership/permissions):18:45

kokutwell OerHeks waht u recommend19:04
OerHekskokut transmission is good enough for me, high speed downloads, it all depends on the source you download from19:04
hkrrsx+1 for transmission19:05
eletiousyeah, saying that the program you use alone affects the speed of your downloads is like saying the the paint on a racecar makes it go faster19:05

eletiousbekks: psssh, just put stickers on it ;)19:06
kokutOerHeks: nope, i tried utorrent on windows, same machine, same network and it downloads almost two times faster, also transmission looks like crap honestly, i have 30 torrents and i have to scroll for 10 minutes to find the one i'm looking for19:06

rolerHow can I install Ubuntu on a USB stick? Not the installer, but the actual desktop OS20:35
daftykinsVoyage: as in zero results? what version?20:35
daftykinsroler: i would not recommend that20:35
xanguaroler: just do as you said, select to install it on the stick, and don't spect a long life for that usb stick20:36
daftykinswell, don't put a swap partition on it to start with20:36
rolerI get that. It's just to screw around with.20:37
hkrrsxVoyage: There's a .deb file available for download from the elastic.co website20:37
hkrrsxhttps://download.elasticsearch.org/elasticsearch/elasticsearch/elasticsearch-1.5.0.deb20:37
rolerI acutally installed the installer on one usb stick and installed to the other usb stick (a nice USB3 drive) but it didn't put the boot loader in the right place, so it didn't boot20:37
hkrrsxVoyage: It also appears that they have a repository with instructions on how to add it to your /etc/apt/sources.list file20:38
hkrrsxhttp://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/reference/current/setup-repositories.html20:38
daftykinsroler: yes you need to select to partition manually, then at the bottom of the installer window, you pick the correct device to install GRUB. simples.20:38
rolerdaftykins; Here's where it gets fun though... I did that, and it mounts /target and /target/boot/efi - I am using a Mac so the /target/boot/efi was my macs hard drive, not the usb stick eventhough I told the partition to use that20:39
Voyagehkrrsx,  where is the repo details?20:39
daftykinsugh a mac.20:39
hkrrsxVoyage: Have a look at the 2nd link I posted20:39
daftykinsroler: yeah again manual partitioning would allow bypassing that i think20:39

EriC^^roler: did you create the efi partition in the partitioner and set the mountpoint to /boot/efi ?20:44
rolerdaftykins; very true.20:44
rolerEriC^^; yes, but the installer installed the efi to my mac's efi directory not the usb stick20:45
EriC^^roler: odd O.o20:45
EriC^^does the efi partition exist on the usb?20:45
EriC^^roler: did you choose the bootloader location at the bottom too?20:47
rolerEriC^^; yep... I may have messed up on the efi part, but definitely picked the right boot loader location... /dev/hdc120:47
EriC^^i think you should choose /dev/hdc , anyways its pretty odd20:49
EriC^^roler: do you want to fix it? you can use a live usb to fix it20:49
pEYEdforget filing a bug report with ubuntu, that place is a nightmare.20:49
