fragment137Yea that doesn't look right01:30
halfburnttoastfragment137, do you remember what the liveCD used as the mapper name? was it the same one?01:30
=== sleepypc is now known as `hypermist`
mchelenhkrrsx: looks like synapse package is deprecated in 14.0401:31
fragment137halfburnttoast, not sure, but I can boot to it to check01:32
fragment137give me a minute. need to grab muh flash dive :P01:32
fragment137drive even01:32
halfburnttoastk01:32
hkrrsxmchelen, so you're right, it seems ...01:32
KwakuBen64, this was to be a quick and dirty solution for a minor problem...01:32
fragment137right, brb. gonna boot to it01:32
hkrrsxmchelen, if you're comfortable with adding a PPA to your system in order to get Synapse, see this: http://askubuntu.com/questions/577711/how-to-install-synapse-in-ubuntu-14-0401:33
hkrrsxIf not, then I digress01:33

fragment137right01:35
fragment137so it doesn't see the raid volume atm, ha01:35
fragment137actually one sec...01:35
halfburnttoastheh01:35
fragment137no that's just messed. It was reading it before :|01:36
fragment137I used a livecd to transfer data between the RAID and other media, lol...01:36
fragment137faaaak01:36
halfburnttoastbut it still works under windows?01:36
fragment137fuuuck me01:36
fragment137it is the array name01:36
halfburnttoast:/01:37
fragment137exact same error on the livecd now01:37
fragment137and I'm an idiot, cause I was remembering the old RAID, that was just called "Storage"01:37
halfburnttoastyeah, I think the escape character isn't being handled correctly by one of the calls01:37
fragment137and that worked on the livecd01:37
mchelenhkrrsx: ah i guess the question is whether the app itself is still maintained01:37
fragment137well damnit, lol01:37
halfburnttoastdon't think these systems are expecting spaces in the block device names01:37
halfburnttoast:s01:37
fragment137is there any way for me to rename the array without having to recreate it?01:37
mchelenekool: it looks close, idk how much tweaking it needs tho01:37
halfburnttoastuhhhhhmmmmm, lemme see01:37
fragment137If I absolutely half to I'll move the data back over and recreate it, but it would save me SO much time if I could just rename it -.-01:38
fragment137have to.. wow. I english good.01:39
fragment137I'll be back in a few minutes. gonna take a look in the RAID bios.01:39
mchelenekool hkrrsx i found the cairo-dock launcher is pretty nice, i just need to set a better kb shortcut01:40
hkrrsxmchelen, best of luck ... I believe there's an option at the Ubuntu log in screen to choose Cairo Dock as a desktop environment, which it completely replaces Unity01:41
hkrrsxAt least, that's what happened when I last used Cairo Dock on Ubuntu01:42
mchelenhkrrsx: yah i haven't tried that, but i am using gnome-flashback + cairo01:42
mchelenand its working well so far01:42
kryptonic56I tried moving a couple files into my home directory and a folder containing a couple files and they dont show up...i try to add them again and it says replace files but again still doesnt show up am i missing something here?01:42
somsipkryptonic56: what command did you use>?01:43
hkrrsxkryptonic56, do those files now have a period in front of them?01:44
fragment137so I'm pretty sure I won't be able to rename it01:45
KwakuBen64, so any suggestions?01:45
halfburnttoastfragment137, I'm trying to find out if there's a way to force a block device name by UUID01:46
fragment137hey if there's another method of mounting this without using that /dev/mapper name01:46
fragment137then I'm all for it, lol01:46
fragment137but I don't know what the UUID of the volume would be o.O01:46
halfburnttoastfragment137, what's in your /etc/fstab, by the way?01:46
fragment137just my root and my swap01:47
halfburnttoastfragment137, run 'blkid', it should give you the UUID for the device01:47
Ben64Kwaku: seems like you're not fixing anything by doing that, work on the actual problem instead01:47
fragment137yea I got the UUID01:47
fragment137I can try adding it to fstab with that, yea?01:47
fragment137might be a workaround01:47
halfburnttoastwell, fstab won't make a block device01:48
fragment137:|01:48
fragment137/dev/mapper/isw_cciiabdhdg_RAID\x20Storage2: LABEL="RAID5Storage" UUID="0C76C6C276C6AC30" TYPE="ntfs"01:48
fragment137tried changing the label01:48
fragment137in windows...01:48
fragment137that's all it did, lol01:48
halfburnttoast:s01:48
kryptonic56hkrrsx yes they do01:49
halfburnttoastthere's a udev way to do it, but I don't remember how01:49
kryptonic56im trying to get conky to work01:49
hkrrsxkryptonic56, the dot in front of files/folders turns them into hidden files/folders01:49
hkrrsxkryptonic56, if you remove that beginning dot, they'll show up again01:49
kryptonic56ok so then it should still work even with the dot?01:50
hkrrsxkryptonic56, alternatively, you can press Ctrl + H in the file manager to Show Hidden Files/Folders and they'll appear ..... along w/ a bunch of other files/folders in your home directory01:50
hkrrsx:)01:50
KwakuBen64, right, so my problem is that the network drops and then I can't find the router again. Restarting the network manager works. If the nm does find my router again, it is usually a very spotty connection. I figure it is because there are many wifi signals and there is probably a channel conflict or something...01:50
hkrrsxkryptonic56, yes, they'll work, they're just hidden01:50
fragment137halfburnttoast, you mean mounting a raid volume with udev?01:50
kryptonic56khrrsx thanks im going to try this again and see if i cant get it to work01:50
halfburnttoasthalfburnttoast, well I mean when it's assigned the block name01:51
hkrrsxkryptonic56, you're welcome01:51
Ben64Kwaku: ok, so focus on the network dropping problem01:53
halfburnttoastfragment137, I'm gunna test something real quick01:54
fragment137halfburnttoast, sure thing. Really appreciate the help :)01:54
fragment137i'll be right back. testing something as well01:56
halfburnttoastfragment137, sure! Ok, try this 'sudo dmsetup rename /dev/mapper/isw_cciiabdhdg_RAID\x20Storage2 raidtest'01:56
halfburnttoastthat should rename the mapper device file, but it'll still point to the same block device01:57

* OerHeks misses something here03:12

phixjmadero1: How does one troubleshoot this or even report it>?  as I am using android studio on another computer and it works correctly03:31
jmadero1phix: using wine?03:31
phixjmadero1: the issue is also intermittent, but once it starts I need to restart android studio03:31
OerHeksmaybe clicking 2 times for foxus on the window, then for pressing the editor?03:32
phixjmadero1: no, android studuio03:32
jmadero1phix: well to report the issue, maybe you'd report against wine03:32

jmadero1that's just my guess though03:32
phixOerHeks: I have tried multiple clicks :)  highlighting works but as soon as I type the focus goes into the project explorer windows instead of the editor window03:32
phixjmadero1: I have an entry for android studio in my .local something or other (where ever the launchers are kept).  Would it have anything to do with that? or duplicate launchers with the same name or id or whatnot?03:33

Klozsudo apt-get install plasma-theme-oxygen oxygen-molecule \ gtk2-engines-oxygen gtk3-engines-oxygen06:35
djonvejni had oxygen in my theme list, but in package manager i just noticed i dont have molecule part06:36
bojanI have a LVm partition mounted on /mnt and have 8 to 10 directories in that. That directories are having N number of files.I have applied ACL permission for all the folders and files.BUt i dont know how to restrict users not to create any directories and also not deleting any directories06:37
KlozWhen you restart go to system settings under appearance then application style get the gtk make sure it's set djonvejn06:38
bojanHow to restrict users not to create any directories without my permission and also not removing any directories without my permission06:38
KlozYou might need to fiddle with settings, oxygen and gtk2 and gtk3 djonvejn06:39
Ben64bojan: don't even need acl for that, just make yourself the owner and set the permissions to something like 75506:39
djonvejnKloz: i will go rambo style, console destkop only :p06:40
djonvejnmoment06:40
bojanBen64:No,i have applied acl for the directories and files inside that depends on the user previliges06:40
bojanBen64:All the main directories in /mnt are having root ownership06:41

Sramelyor3301hey does anybody know if there is a way to install whatsapp on ubuntu?06:43

OerHeksSramelyor3301, not possible, you need a phonenumber for that.06:43

Artemis3bojan, that looks so simple to do, just don't grant others write permission i wouldn't even bother with acl :306:44

bojanArtemis3:Can u say me clearly06:47
Artemis3bojan, also 770 is wrong, they won't be able to read06:48
bojanArtemis3:But i dont want users to read all the files..I only want to allow some files and directories for some users06:49
Sramelyor3301lol06:49

lotuspsychjeSramelyor3301: ask your friends to switch also06:53
Artemis3bojan, that needs 775. 770 the users can not read or enter the directory06:53
bojansomsip:yes by giving permission to main directories as 770 i can restrict them not to delete any folder06:53
bojanArtemis3:They can06:53
Ben64770 = owner and group can read,write,execute. others can't do anything06:54
somsipbojan: then g+s for the directory so anything created in there can be read/write by them. You will have to create unchangeable dirs a06:54
Artemis3unless your users belong to the group, they can't do nothing06:54
Artemis3you could just make a group and have permission 750 or 75506:55
bojanArtemis3:So far the permission for main directory is 770 and the users can read and write the files and directories on the acl permission i applied for the files inside the directories06:55

ioriajonascj, i think you should build it from  source14:52
OerHekspbx, jonascj as 12.10 is unsupported, install 14.04 with gcc 4,8,214:52

newby_mcnewbcompletely new to linux -- i'm trying to understand the concept of distros and desktop environments. "ubuntu" has many distros, xubuntu, lubuntu, edubuntu etc. they have different desktop environments unity, lxde etc. some distros don't even have a desktop environment... like ubuntu server. am i correct so far?15:07

cfhowlett!flavors | newby_mcnewb15:07
ubottunewby_mcnewb: !Ubuntu-GNOME, !Kubuntu, !Xubuntu and !Lubuntu are simply flavors of Ubuntu that come with GNOME, KDE, Xfce, and LXDE (respectively) installed as default, instead of Unity. Other specialized flavors of Ubuntu include !Edubuntu, Ubuntu !Studio, and !Mythbuntu.15:07
cfhowlettnewby_mcnewb, technically, there is one ubuntu "distro" just different flavors15:08
ioriaStaberinde,   you status file in /var/lib/dpks g could be damaged  but i don'tget why15:08
newby_mcnewbcfhowlett: okay so fine, flavors. the different flavors have completely different applications installed by default? we're getting to my question in a second.15:08
cfhowlettnewby_mcnewb, true, different default apps for different flavors15:09
OerHeksioria, we cannot make that up without full upgrade log15:09
ioriaright15:09
newby_mcnewbcfhowlett: okay fine. so my question is what is the most stripped down version of the ubuntu distro? the different flavors just seem to be various desktop environments and apps... but can one just get "ubuntu" in command line?15:10
cfhowlettnewby_mcnewb, server is the most stripped down and command line only.15:10
OerHeksnewby_mcnewb, that would be ubuntu-server.15:10
newby_mcnewbso server, though, would come with something like a LAMP stack by default? or no.15:10
OerHeksor as a basis the minimal iso15:10
cfhowlettnewby_mcnewb, not by default.15:11
newby_mcnewbahhh interesting.15:11
geniiStaberinde: If the lists are corrupt, this might do:  sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/*    ..and then do again sudo apt-get update15:11
cowbaconnewby_mcnewb: iirc you get to choose at the end of the installation what you want to include in the server version, where lamp is one of the choices15:11
newby_mcnewbokay now here's the real question i'm getting at. i understand that one can use a "package manager" to basically do all things. i saw some guide that was like, essentially, do "apt-get install lubuntu-desktop" ... so is my "ubuntu" becoming "lubuntu" at that point? is it just the desktop environment? is it all the apps?15:12
newby_mcnewbits confusing to me.15:12
newby_mcnewbto wrap my head around15:12
tgm4883newby_mcnewb: yes, that would make it lubuntu15:12
cowbaconnewby_mcnewb: lubuntu-desktop should include all apps thats included in the lubuntu install15:12
OerHeks... that would make it lubuntu, when you choose lubuntu at login as desktopenvironment15:13
cowbaconprobably not branding though, ie it says lubuntu at startup15:13
tgm4883newby_mcnewb: if that was your end goal, you should just install from lubuntu ISO though15:13
tgm4883cowbacon: it would get that too15:13
newby_mcnewbso can someone JUST get ubuntu server, and then tack on the Xubuntu desktop enfironment?15:13
cowbacontgm4883: ah kk15:13
newby_mcnewbwithout apps15:13
cowbaconnewby_mcnewb: yes, you can do that even with lubntu, ubuntu etc etc15:13
cfhowlettnewby_mcnewb, yes.  sudo apt-get install xfce4       would add ONLY the DE --- NOT the apps15:13
tgm4883newby_mcnewb: you mean XFCE15:14
mrpizzafacehey can anyone help with me being unable to write to a flashdrive that i have used gparted to formatt to EXT415:14
tgm4883newby_mcnewb: it's important to note that would only install XFCE though, not any of the theming or default settings either15:14
cfhowlettnewby_mcnewb, if that's your end goal, you might find it more useful to start with xubuntu and add the server packages, e.. lamp15:14
newby_mcnewbtgm4883: can you elavorate a bit more on that15:14
tgm4883newby_mcnewb: on what?15:15
newby_mcnewbcfhowlett: i don't have much of an "end goal" beyond just trying to understand it all.15:15
cfhowlettnewby_mcnewb, no "eye candy"15:15
dittonewby_mcnewb: yes and no your ubuntu would become lubuntu but at the same time it will not, don't quote me on this but I think you should look at it as the lubuntu window manager in ubuntu unless you change the package system as well15:15
newby_mcnewbtgm4883: so installing xfce doesn't put make your desktop look like xubuntu, but installing xubuntu-desktop does? but then it comes with all the apps.15:15
tgm4883ditto: that's completely false. Assuming you are responding to him asking about lubuntu-desktop15:16
cowbaconnewby_mcnewb: lets see it like this: in linux your GUI is just another app running ontop of linux, its not built in like in windows. so changing your GUI, or DE as its called, is as easy as typing a command and changing at the login screen15:16
tgm4883newby_mcnewb: correct. It would look like default XFCE15:16
newby_mcnewbokay i guess i'm not exactly understanding then what makes "lubuntu" lubuntu.15:17
Picinewby_mcnewb: lubuntu comes with lxde by default.15:17
Pici!flavors15:18
ubottu!Ubuntu-GNOME, !Kubuntu, !Xubuntu and !Lubuntu are simply flavors of Ubuntu that come with GNOME, KDE, Xfce, and LXDE (respectively) installed as default, instead of Unity. Other specialized flavors of Ubuntu include !Edubuntu, Ubuntu !Studio, and !Mythbuntu.15:18
cowbaconnewby_mcnewb: what makes lubuntu lubuntu is branding, configs, default apps. all configured for you15:18
cfhowlettnewby_mcnewb, can we make this > practical and < theoretical?  install server.  add a DE.  observe the changes15:18
newby_mcnewbits strange to me to think that i could download the regular full ubuntu desktop, apt-get and all of a sudden it's not ubuntu desktop anymore, it's lubuntu. but also if i, instead, install the LXDE(?) environment on my ubuntu, that .... am i now in lubuntu?15:18
dittotgm4883: yes, I was trying to answer it but like I wrote I hope they don't quote me word for word but that is what I think,. However, I could/can be wrong considering I haven't used a desktop manager in years.15:18
tgm4883newby_mcnewb: lubuntu is made up of a set of applications picked by the lubuntu team, settings created by the lubuntu team, and likely a theme created by the lubuntu team15:18
OerHeksnewby_mcnewb, no problem to have 2 or 3 desktops on 1 system, you choose one @ login15:18
cfhowlettnewby_mcnewb, not quite.  lxde is ONLY the DE.  lubuntu-desktop is the full meal deal.15:18
newby_mcnewbokay15:19
tgm4883ditto: no offense, but you shouldn't just guess at things15:19
geniinewby_mcnewb: lubuntu-desktop differs from lxde in that lxde is just the desktop without any apps. lubuntu-desktop ( and all *buntu-desktop packages) install a selection of applications which the team for that distribution have chosen to be the defaults for that flavour15:19
newby_mcnewbi think i understand it, i have a better idea now what defines "lubuntu" and not just say.... "edubuntu with lxde"15:19
dittotgm4883: you're right and no offense taken, I shouldn't have answered it unless I was certain15:19
ioria! apt-show-versions15:20

=== sins-_k is now known as sins-
cfhowlettnewby_mcnewb, you're on the right track.15:21
PCatineanHey guys, is there a way in which I can capture the ftp upload event and trigger something on the system?15:21
cowbaconnewby_mcnewb: yes you can turn them into the other. thats the great thing about linux. you can have all DEs installed at the same time if you want. and then just choose the one you want when you login15:21
PCatineanAs in somebody uploads something to ftp and that action triggers a python script or bash script? or some sort of command?15:22
newby_mcnewbi picked xubuntu and lubuntu because they were "lighter weight" but i wasn't even sure what that meant. they had lower system requirements... but are those requirements because of some core features or the DE. it sounds like the DE.15:22
cowbaconits the DE, ubuntu server is quite low req when it comes to resources15:22
cfhowlettnewby_mcnewb, lxde and xfce4 are practically identical in terms of load requirements.15:22

newby_mcnewbcfhowlett: i think i prefer xfce but, again, i wasn't really sure why i preferred it. or whether i was even looking at "xfce" itself... it sounds like i was looking at a customized xfce with defaults picked by the "xubuntu team"15:25
cowbaconnewby_mcnewb: i'd recommend reading the arch linux beginner guide if you wanna go from cli into gui by yourself. as that guide is made for exactly that (including the "recommended reading" etc after the beginner guide)15:25

halfburnttoastfragment137, ah, yeah I was looking into it last night. udev uses a name matching system that gets pretty complicated15:32
k1lmrpizzaface: so a mate ppa or mint directly?15:32
deadmundSo it has separate repos.  What is the benefit of using kubuntu vs. installing ubuntu and then installing kubuntu-desktop from the repos?15:32
newby_mcnewbsorry.... one last question everyone. even though i might be on lubuntu or xubuntu or whatever-buntu with whatever DE.... as a beginner googling stuff, i should basically be looking for "how to XYZ in ubuntu"? more or less? like i should really have to specify lubuntu, anything ubuntu will probably work unless it's DE or app specific?15:32
k1ldeadmund: it has _not_ different repos15:32
mrpizzafacek1l a mate ppa to install the mate DE15:32
fragment137halfburnttoast, I mean, it's not a -huge- hassle for me to rename it... and I suppose I could just make a small bash script to run15:32

halfburnttoastudev has to run pretty early in the boot process, so it might work out15:33
deadmundnewby_mcnewb: You're correct 95% of the time.  The DE does not matter at all.15:33
fragment137I have to run a dmraid discovery first, then rename and mount.15:33
deadmundnewby_mcnewb: I've found that even debian or arch wiki to be very helpful for ubuntu things.  But you sometimes have to translate slightly what they're talking about.15:33
goeranhwich exact command do i have to use to amrk an jar file as executeable?15:34
k1ldeadmund: ubuntu repos host 100% packages. kubuntu doesnt use all of them because a lot are gnome packages. got it?15:34

mrpizzafacek1l, this is all the options i get concering /dev/sdd1 "the drive in question" /dev/sdd1 on /media/gaming/e6c56bec-4e8b-4533-a3cb-28a4e21880ad type ext4 (rw,nodev,nosuid,uhelper=udisks2)15:38

cfhowlettdeadmund, do you have ubuntu installed at present?15:38
newby_mcnewbokay thanks again everyone. have a good day.15:39

ubottudeadmund: Kubuntu is the Ubuntu flavour using KDE Software and the KDE Plasma Workspaces.  See http://kubuntu.org for more information - For support join  #kubuntu - See also !kde15:39
deadmundk1l: Cause I know that installing one (e.g. unity) and then trying to switch to KDE is a pain because we have to figure out all of what unity encompassed and should be removed.15:39
deadmundcfhowlett: No.  I am getting a new machine (in the mail).  I don't even have it yet.15:39
k1ldeadmund: nope15:39
halfburnttoastfragment137, well, as for the udev thing, I think it will require editing one of the files in /lib/udev/rules.d/15:39
k1ldeadmund: that is not an issue15:39
deadmundcfhowlett: But on some other machines I'm running mint15:39
deadmundk1l: How do you mean?15:39
k1lits not an issue15:39
mrpizzafacefragment137, i know a little bit on fglrx whats up ?15:39
halfburnttoast/lib/udev/rules.d/55-dm.rules manages the mapper naming15:40
Staberindegenii, I find a status and a status-old: http://paste.ubuntu.com/10750972/15:40
deadmundk1l: care to elaborate on that a bit?15:40
tgm4883deadmund: its' pretty easy to switch the DE15:40
BluesKajdeadmund, just install Kubuntu instead, don't muck about with ubuntu if you want kde15:40
halfburnttoastI'm curious now, heh. I'll keep looking into it15:40
tgm4883deadmund: apt-get install kubuntu-desktop15:40
k1lwhat you think is an issue is not an issue. switching dekstops works.15:40
fragment137halfburnttoast, Thanks man I'll look into that15:40
tgm4883deadmund: but yes, if you want to end up with Kubuntu, why not install kubuntu first?15:40
fragment137mrpizzaface, Welp, I tried installing fglrx, and I rebooted to a blank purple screen.15:41
k1ldeadmund: of course it doesnt work if you use mint, because mint fiddles with the repos to get their stuff installed. but for official ubuntu it works15:41
deadmundBluesKaj: There is literally no difference besides what is installed by default?15:41
deadmundtgm4883: Yes I will just install kubuntu :)15:41
fragment137mrpizzaface, Tried to reinstall xorg, but it failed miserably, so I just reinstalled ubuntu from a livecd, lol15:41

fragment137mrpizzaface, to be honest, I believe I tried from the website15:41
k1ldeadmund: dont scale from mint to ubuntu.15:42
BluesKajdeadmund, did you order a system 76  computer with ubuntu preinstalled ?15:42
geniiStaberinde: So in this case, move the current status to status-backup with: sudo mv /var/lib/dpkg/status /var/lib/dpkg/status-backup    ..then we try to use the status-old instead: sudo mv /var/lib/dpkg/status-old /var/lib/dpkg/status     .... then: sudo sync   ...then try again the sudo apt-get update15:42
deadmundBluesKaj: No.  I bought a refurbished Thinkpad T420s.  I think it has win7 pre-installed but I don't care.  I'm going to install Ubuntu immediately.15:42
deadmundBluesKaj: Well, I might wait for 15.04 to land.  Then I'll install.15:43
mrpizzafacefragment137, personally i have alot better luck by searching in the dash "Additional Drivers" and installing fglrx-updates but it might not appear for you15:43
fragment137no I don't see it15:43
BluesKajdeadmund, install Kubuntu if you want KDE , not ubuntu..thgere is a difference and Kubuntu will install faster15:43
pzykoticDoes anyone know the difference between ATI drivers in fglrx-updates and fglrx.  I assume one is newer but can't ascertain which one.15:43
fragment137oh, wait15:43
deadmundBluesKaj: I'm going to use a separate /home and /root so that when new versions come out I can "fresh install" them15:43
deadmundBluesKaj: I agree.  I am curious though.  Besides the default installed packages, what is the difference (if any) between ubuntu and kubuntu ?15:44
zykotick9pzykotic: nice nick ;)15:44
cfhowlettdeadmund, eyecandy = look and feel15:44
fragment137_mrpizzaface, it's searching for additional drivers now. Taking a long time though15:44
BluesKajdeadmund, yeah well that's a given if you switch OSs alot , but 15.04 is up and working , but it's only meant for the adventurous and not the workplace15:45
deadmundcfhowlett: mmmm I disagree.  eyecandy is like a subset of look and feel15:45
fragment137_mrpizzaface, So you would recommend fglrx-updates?15:45
deadmundBluesKaj: It's in beta, so if I install it now, when it lands as a full release there will be an upgrade path for me?15:45
deadmundBluesKaj: oh, actually, I said that I'd have a separate /root, so I can just install 15.04 release when it comes out15:46
zykotick9!final | deadmund15:46
ubottudeadmund: If you install a development version of Ubuntu Vivid and keep up with package updates, then you will be upgraded to the official release of 15.04 when it comes out. To make sure, type « sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade » in a terminal.15:46
BluesKajdeadmund, yes of course15:46
mrpizzafacefragment137_, fglrx-updates is basicly amd's 13.04 AMDCCLE control center and driver so i'd reccommend it BUT if you want the lastest version i have a guide to install them15:46
pzykoticlol, I didn't notice someone else asked the exact same question15:46
mrpizzafacepzykotic, from what i have seen fglrx-updates are AMD's propitary drivers and FGLRX is well... just FGLRX it is just the diffrence in having the AMD Catalyst control center to me15:47
pzykoticmrpizzaface: Yeah I've never used ATI/AMD drivers before.  I'm an NVidia guy but XOrg keeps spazzing out with Nouveaou so I popped my ATI card in till I can spend time figuring out why it's not working15:49
Staberindegenii: so it seems to have the same problem even when i swap out status for status-old. Is status a binary file or a text file. if it's a binary how wouldI go about debugging it?15:49

maranetapetrvs: so how can I find where sdc1 is located?16:59
maranetait's not under /dev16:59
digitsminstead of downloading them from internet16:59
rofltechdigitsm: dpkg -i16:59
rofltechdigitsm: oh nvm16:59
digitsmrofltech, dpkg -i installs all packages17:00
rofltechdigitsm: grab them from the temp dir maybe17:00
digitsmI don't want to install every thing. not all of the packages on my laptop are necessary17:00
digitsmrofltech, how? you mean copying them to apt cache?17:00
Pinkamena_Dmy desktop is stuck in the 'choosing between two windows to maximize' stage. I have programs open there that I do not want to kill17:01

Pinkamena_Dhow can I regain some control here?17:02
Lord-KaminaSince in the USB, I can at least get to GRUB... can anybody suggest alternate booting commands I might try to get it to boot?17:02
petrvsmaraneta: uh, what does sudo fdisk -l say?17:02
maranetapetrvs: oh, it says /dev/sdc117:03
Pinkamena_Dis there a command to restart unity without killing everything  for example not lightdm restart?17:03
maranetapetrvs: I guess I don't understand the concept that well but I guess it doesn't have to be a directory17:03
maranetamount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdc1 <location to mount to>17:04

petrvsgnome-screenshot sounds heavy for using i317:12
petrvsare you using i3 with GNOME?17:12
hkrrsxbaxx: check out i3lock for i3-wm17:13
hkrrsxbaxx: the command would be " i3lock -i /path/to/image "17:13
jost_I'm on a machine with XUbuntu 14.10 as the single OS. But GRUB still shows me a 10 second timeout on boot - how can I switch that off? I'd still like to see the grub prompt when an error occurs17:14
hkrrsxbaxx: You can even bind it to a key, say like Pause/Break17:14
baxxpetrvs: well I've got gnome installed because that script works, so I guess that's a yes, but I'm using i3 as the WM17:14
jost_I've done some googeling, but nothing seems to work17:14

petrvsdigitsm: yes17:17
maranetapetrvs: what about the mount -t command17:17
petrvsmaraneta: just a longer equivalent17:17
hkrrsxbaxx: pardon me, i must have mis-interpreted your statement17:17
petrvsmaraneta: you can try mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt/backup, too, or if that doesn't work mount -t ntfs17:18
digitsmpetrvs, really? is the new kernel name "linux-generic-lts-utopic"?17:18
petrvsmaraneta: but ntfs-3g is superior17:18
baxxhkrrsx: no worries :) I'm trying to trigger a screenshot script that I have using i3 basically17:18
petrvsdigitsm: not sure, it's got 3.16 in its name, though =)17:18
maranetapetrvs: what would I be missing out on if I jus tused mount -t ntfs17:18
baxxgnome-screenshot -a -f ~/Pictures/$1.png hkrrsx that is the script, would be nice to have a pop up window or something to name it I guess, not a biggie though17:18

quackgyverCan somebody help me? I need to install Windows 8.1 on a UEFI device which has previously had Ubuntu on it (I have to change OS because apparently if you go into sleep mode from within Ubuntu on an Intel NUC, it will get bricked (sigh)), but during the Windows 8 installer it complains that it needs the target drive to be a valid NTFS one, and beyond that it17:27
quackgyverwon't let me format it for some reason I can't comprehend (the "format" button is grayed out). Can somebody please help me figure out what's wrong and how I can get Windows on this device?17:27

digitsmxangua, Ahhh! I got it. the 14.04.2 will ship with Hardware Enablemwnt Stack. So if I don't want to be updated to latest kernel / x windows I should remain with 14.04.117:27
hkrrsxclouddig: Try "curl -ILk https://mydomain.com"17:27

quackgyverpetrvs: yeah i just want to clear the whole disk17:31
quackgyverdo i do that from within ubuntus terminal?17:31

clouddighkrrsx: but I don't want -k (insecure).17:32
petrvsquackgyver: you can, yes, just get the device right17:32
clouddighkrrsx: The point is that the certificate is in ca-certificates file. I'm confused that it's not using that.17:32
MonkeyDustVanDerGroot  look for a difference in the config files, permissions, groups etc, so you know what causes it17:32
petrvsVanDerGroot: you'll also need to chmod/chown properly the directory/contents17:32
baxxtos-1: cool cool - thanks :)17:32
VanDerGrootMonkeyDust: What do you mean, are there different config files for each user?17:33
VanDerGrootpetrvs: They are both members of a group that has permissions.17:33
alimanhow can i make the left side dock disappear? i would like to install cairo-dock but i'll have both there thou17:33

maranetaso assuming my server has no internet access, is there any way to get it to recognize the ntfs filesystem?  even just doing mount -t ntfs, it says 'unknown filesystem type ntfs', petrvs17:36

ioriaVanDerGroot,  good17:41
petrvsmaraneta: okay, you can potentially add it to your kernel without being online17:41
petrvsquackgyver: that doesn't answer my question17:42
petrvsquackgyver: is that a no?17:42
quackgyverpetrvs: I have my Windows 8 installer on a USB stick, but it won't let me install to my SSD (where Ubuntu is currently installed) because it's complaining that the disk isn't NTFS.17:42
ioriaVanDerGroot,  but usually the issue is in smb.conf17:42

petrvsquackgyver: ah17:42
quackgyver:)17:42

petrvsquackgyver: brick means broken17:47
hkrrsxGiwrgaras: Have you installed virtualbox guest additions ?17:47
petrvsquackgyver: like unfixable, that's what brick means17:47
petrvsquackgyver: that's undoubtedly a simple configuration issue, hibernation is complex regardless of OS17:48

digitsmHello again. Only now I found out that 14.04.2 iso ships with kernel 3.16!!! I didn't know that. because when I do "lsb_release -a" in my laptop (installed from 14.04), it says I have 14.04.2 too!18:04
MonkeyDusts1991  steadyflow and fatrat are download managers18:04

MonkeyDustdigitsm  14.04.2 has 3.13 too18:05

Pici/70/7018:17
Artemis3digitsm, even if you had the earlier iso, a simple update would put you in the same version18:17

I'm often getting issues due to dual booting windows 8 and Ubuntu 14.10 due to windows8's hybernation - but normally when I want to access windows I only want to read from it so it would be great if I could just right click "Mount Read Only"23:57
