[10:43] But the same issue is there with Windows and Ubuntu on the same network as well [10:43] zetheroo, you need to decide what you want help with [10:43] zetheroo, can you try to connect to ubuntu share from a widnows machine, by going to \\IP on windows? [10:43] well, these machines cannot see each other Ubuntu to Ubuntu or Windows to Ubuntu or Ubuntu to Windows [10:44] for now I am dealing with the 2 Ubuntu machiens [10:44] zetheroo, see each other? [10:44] should be the easiest to get going ... I would think [10:44] zetheroo, can they ping each other? [10:44] In browsing for Network devices [10:44] ping works [10:45] zetheroo, ok, please do me a favour. forget about network browsing. please. that's another part, not smb itself, to advertise the machine. you need to get the network shares to work first. and navigate by IP to make sure they do work. [10:45] I keep reading people saying one has to still edit that smb.conf file ... but I cannot believe that is still the case now .. [10:45] zetheroo, once that works, we can play with network discovery, which is something else altogether [10:46] zetheroo, right-click and share a directory on one ubuntu machine. on another one, in nautilus, navigate to smb://IP [10:46] but this is where I have trouble ... because this is supposed to work for people who are all about right-click and share ... no!? [10:46] zetheroo, yes, works for me [10:47] ok, that works ... [10:47] smb://IP/ [10:47] gets me to the machine and all the shares [10:47] zetheroo, so you cna browse shares, can you go to that shared dir and see it? [10:47] zetheroo, i.e. can you actually access a share? [10:47] yes [10:48] zetheroo, ok, so sharing works. [10:48] zetheroo, I can't remember which, but a completely another component is needed for network SMB discovery [10:49] ok [10:49] the strange thing is that for some Linux machines Net discovery seems to work right away [10:49] zetheroo, nmbd [10:49] like I have another Lubuntu 14.04 laptop and it's on the network [10:50] actually 2 Lubuntu laptops and both are on the network everywhere ... Windows and Linux [10:50] zetheroo, make sure nmbd is installed and works. also make sure that DNS settings are the same, as network discovery dependso n bcast name resolving [10:51] Unable to locate package nmbd [10:51] zetheroo, nmbd is the process... [10:52] zetheroo, is it running? [10:52] hey is kll still here? [10:52] hmmm [10:53] status shows : nmbd start/running, process 2065 [10:53] well if kll comes back, i fixed the screen issue [10:53] its running on both Ubuntu 14.04 laptops [10:53] finally logged out of cinnamon, still having graphic problems but... at least now I can read everything [10:53] iptable: ^ [10:54] zetheroo, do you have a firewall enabled on those? [10:54] iptable: both Ubuntu 14.04 laptops can see other machines on the network ... just not each other [10:54] zetheroo, you need Wins and NetBIOS for network discovery to work [10:54] iptable: not that I know of [10:54] iptable: I didn't set anything up ... is there a default one? [10:54] zetheroo, they can see each other, they are just not advertising the shares to the network [10:55] zetheroo, check with iptables -L -vn. any rules? [10:55] hi [10:55] zetheroo, also, check smb.conf to ensure that public=yes and browsable=yes in the share configs [10:56] hi guys. i have a little issue. i downloaded google chrome from its website and i wanted to install it with software center. i press install and i see the installation progress but when is done insteed of showing me remove button it shows me install. like it is not installed yet. but if i search for google chrome in dash i can see it there [10:56] iptables: http://paste.ubuntu.com/10760736/ [10:56] bogdan, known issue, happened here too, chrome deb succesfully added their ppa. === jpphelps is now known as oligo [10:57] bogdan, don't worry, have fun [10:57] iptables: I was afraid i would have to look at that file :D [10:57] zetheroo, check smb.conf to ensure that public=yes and browsable=yes in the share configs ; THEN check that smb.conf has WINS server enabled. Welcome to Microsoft protocols, where you need cifs, wins, netbios to work :/ [10:57] Hi. Yesterday I got update to Gnome 3.12 and package manager showed that there are packages that not needed anymore(they were Gnome 3.10 packages). I wrote apt-get autoremove as package manager said, no bugs but Update manager disappeared. It's not handy to go to terminal to install updates every time. How to fix it? [10:58] can you pls tell me what that means? chrome deb succesfully added their ppa? what is ppa? sry dont get upset but im new with linux i just installed it for the 1st time [10:58] zetheroo, in any case, sharing works, and machines see each other as you can access them via IP. Only network discovery/advertising doesn't work. that's different. [10:58] iptables: where should what be changed? http://paste.ubuntu.com/10760744/ [10:58] bogdan, ppa is a very nice ubuntu way of storing 3rd-party dependencies [10:58] blah [10:59] bogdan, ppa is a very nice ubuntu way of storing 3rd-party packages/repositories [10:59] bogdan, the .deb from the google site is just a ppa, not the actual chrome. this behaviour is a bug, but not a real error. [10:59] PPA is something like user's repository from where you can install software. [10:59] sharing is only as good as the access to the share ... :P [10:59] zetheroo, ctrl+f, seach for "wins" :P [10:59] ah ok guys thx. if i restart my laptop and log in again should it disappear? [10:59] zetheroo, wins support = no, change to yes, uncomment [10:59] # wins support = no [10:59] ok [11:00] bogdan, no need to restart i guess [11:00] OerHeks, ok thx [11:00] What about my question? [11:00] iptable: so basically samba still is in need of a comprehensive GUI management tool ... [11:01] zetheroo, also, at the end under eery share: [Pictures] [Videos] etc, that you created, uncomment (or add if required) browseable = yes AND public = yes (2 lines, public an browseable) [11:01] zetheroo, not really, most people just use ip to connect [11:01] ah ok [11:01] an bookmark it [11:01] no need to use network places. bookmarks are so much better [11:02] Hello, i used to be able to access my windows machine in the network but now i can't it says "Unable to access location: Failed to retrieve share list from server: Connection timed out." Is there anything i can do? [11:02] zetheroo, once edited, service smbd restart ; service nmbd restart [11:02] or whatever they are called [11:02] iptable: really? but with DHCP networks IP's can change all the time ... [11:02] zetheroo, they normally don't. [11:03] zetheroo, machines that run out of DHCP will ask for lease again and will normally get the same IP. Most routers have sticky IPs on DHCP as well for machines that are off overnight. [11:03] iptable: I get a lot of people over from Windows to Linux ... and usually over to Ubuntu ... and it's once of the nagging issues they face most of the time .. [11:03] just simply sharing from one machine to another - via the GUI [11:04] zetheroo, ay, windows people wanting to move to linux and still use their windows ways [11:04] OerHeks, i found out that infact that thing is really an error [11:04] iptables: well yes :) [11:04] OerHeks, my chrome wont start cuz of an unespected error [11:04] zetheroo, it works, just need IP or local name (if your router supports names for dhcp) === michael__ is now known as Guest43672 [11:04] zetheroo, I can connect to most my shares using the machine names instead of IP as well === Guest43672 is now known as ScoobiesPhD [11:05] as soon as I say to then "well you have to go edit that config file" or "you have to manually enter in an IP to get it to work" they are like ... "WHAT!?!?" [11:05] It's a bit archaic really [11:05] zetheroo, and that's what I would tell them to do, not to rely on brose windows network. between ubuntu and ubuntu, they should probably use scp/sftp/webdav for sharing too, cifs/smb is windows tbh [11:05] zetheroo, or nfs, windows supports it too, but then they could not right-clik and click share [11:05] by now Ubuntu should really have a fully comprehensive solution for network sharing without the need to mess in the terminal [11:06] zetheroo, uhm, my linux users, when I tell them that they can't just copy files between 2 machines using a proxy in between with a single ssh command , are like, what? what's archaic really [11:06] How do I create a "shortcut" to a specific folder to use in terminal? Example: instead of 'gedit /etc/apache2/sites-available/somesite.conf' id like to use something shorter for the folder path [11:06] yeah, NFS is not cool either for starter users ... [11:06] zetheroo, but now windows should have a comprehensive solution [11:07] hello all, i have a mobile internet modem that creates a wired network, but it is disabled (greyed out) in NetworkManager, 12.04 LTS; how to enable it? [11:07] chotaz`work, alias something="something longer" [11:07] if i do sudo apt-get autoremoveit will remove all the files that i dont need? [11:07] iptable: Windows sharing works pretty well. (Windows 7 at least) [11:07] bogdan, theoretically [11:07] chotaz`work use ln -s to create a symbolic link of the file you want to edit [11:08] iptable, so it wont harm anything that command [11:08] MonkeyDust, thanks but iptable's solution seems to be more fititng, as I want to ease the access to the folder itself and not the file. [11:08] zetheroo, when you can connect to an scp/sftp share from windows out of the box, you can complain that ubuntu's cifs/smb windows sharing implementation doesn't work properly :P [11:08] zetheroo: I feel you dawg. [11:08] bogdan, it shouldn't === BOHverkill_ is now known as BOHverkill [11:08] iptable: no but it's about Ubuntu/Linux sharing in general [11:08] zetheroo, yes, it would be nice if it was enabled b default, but it's not. they can use their machine names, IPs, or another sharing solution [11:09] zetheroo, or create a script that will magically fix it for them [11:09] zetheroo, or they can use owncloud/dropbox like most people nowadays [11:09] iptable: I wouldn't really care about samba if there was a comprehensive GUI solution for NFS [11:10] Ubuntu/Linux is still far behind Windows and MacOS in this regard IMHO ... and Linux is supposed to be the king at networking on top of that :D [11:11] Hello! I have a cheap web hosting account that seems to be accessible via https but has no trusted certificate. It uses some generic certificate of the hosting company. Is it safe to access it from an interenet cafe? I know the IP is correct. [11:11] zetheroo, you are failingto see the point. windows cannot browse scp shares. windows is behind [11:11] zetheroo, let's add apple devices to equasion [11:11] iptable: but home users don;t care about SCP [11:11] zetheroo, linux is not behind, it does things differently. live with it, or create a workaround [11:11] and Ubuntu is primarily for Desktop users [11:11] zetheroo, my mom uses scp to copy pictures to me! [11:12] zetheroo, over internet! [11:12] iptable: and she set it up herself? [11:12] an she is a nursery supervisor [11:12] smart mom ;) [11:12] zetheroo, I told her how to [11:12] yep [11:12] zetheroo, but then again, I had to tell her how to browse windows shares as well [11:12] and that's over the Internet ... so that makes sense [11:13] zetheroo, not a single one of those users figured out how to browse windows shares, they were told. enough of this now please [11:13] zetheroo, more on [11:13] zetheroo, windows is behind with over internet sharing :P [11:13] ok, but I am not talking about Internet sharing [11:13] just simple home networks [11:13] zetheroo, enough [11:13] would be great as a start :) [11:13] hi poeple, how do I include variables like $1 in executing shell comands in my shell script? [11:14] idd, there's no gui for nfs, been seaching a bit [11:14] littlebit: I think #bash is a better place to ask [11:14] ok [11:14] littlebit: Assuming you are writing for bash, that is [11:14] MonkeyDust: let me know when/if you find something :D [11:15] MonkeyDust: I have been dealing with the same networking scenario in Ubuntu since 2006 .. when I switched to Ubuntu ... [11:16] * iptable goes to get a coffee [11:17] zetheroo this guy is a bit cynical: "Gee, NFS requires only TWO lines of configuration - one line on the server and one line on the client. That is why there aren't any wizards for it, since wizards just make it more difficult... " [11:17] HA! [11:17] :D [11:18] Some people forget that there is a HUGE world out there of people who have never configured anything in a command prompt or config file .... but, right, GUI's make life harder ... they say :D [11:20] zetheroo this is the most recent page I found, if it's not yours, you could your name: https://bugs.launchpad.net/nautilus/+bug/1397545 [11:20] Launchpad bug 1397545 in gvfs (Ubuntu) "Add GUI for nfs mount [Whishlist]" [Undecided,New] [11:20] could add* [11:24] fine, I'll code an NFS GUI [11:25] you want it as an embedded-light-webserver-page-GUI or as a gnome-one? [11:25] should not be hard to ask for 2 locations with a brose button :/ [11:26] awesome ... :) [11:26] Unity/Gnome I would prefer [11:26] zetheroo, ping me by end of April [11:26] haha ... for real? [11:27] why not [11:27] I dunno ... if it were that easy why hasn't it already been done? [11:27] it won't look super flashy. I am in no way a graphics designer [11:27] cause no one could be bothered? [11:27] it's a simple file-alteration with service-restart [11:28] ok - I would rather a GUI that sorts out the samba options in detail though :D [11:28] like enable WINS without editing the config [11:30] zetheroo, for that you don't need a GUI. you just need a daemon that monitors the smb.conf file and fixes if/as required when it changes [11:31] zetheroo, please check and confirm which option change in smb.conf makes it work for you and I'll code a workaround daemon for you [11:31] zetheroo, once you know which options, PM (private-message) me and I'll glue it for you when I am back in front of my machine. Leave contact details if you are not on IRC most of the time. [11:32] I think zetheroo is thinking that it's backward to be forced to edit a config file rather than select radio buttons in a GUI. [11:32] Would have a hard time disagreeing with that. [11:32] iptable: thanks ... still trying to get it working actually ... [11:33] StanDarsh, well, tbh, I agree that if you are doing cifs shares via GUI, but default network discovery via netbios should be enabled, not disabled. I can build a workaround. [11:33] StanDarsh, then again, we should encourage people to learn how their computers works [11:34] to get the net discovery to work do I need to reboot the machiens? [11:34] zetheroo, cool. I'm off for a break then. PM once you fiure it out (browsable|public setting OR the wins server setting OR all of them needed) [11:34] We indeed should, and that's one of the strengths of linux in general. I just think that they're not going to learn much less if they select options iwthin a familiar GUI rather than have to use config files. [11:34] zetheroo, you need to restart smbd and nmbd services [11:35] ok, I restarted both services and nothing still ... [11:35] going to reboot to be sure ... :P [11:35] bbs [11:36] StanDarsh, "Users are Losers" ... took me a while to figure out it refers to drugs when I saw it on the back of a car :P [11:36] hah [11:38] how about a dedicated webdav server with a nice sharing GUI to add on top for sharing? that would work a treat and windows 7+ supports it === Mathis|2 is now known as Mathis [11:39] rebooted both machines ... still not seeing each other in Nautilus > Network [11:40] iptable: like ownCloud then [11:41] hateball, well, kinda. I use owncloud at home and work, but what for users who just want to share between each other and are too dumb to connect without a "browse network" option? [11:41] rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 1.655/7.330/60.591/8.698 ms [11:41] shouldn't ping time to router be better than that... [11:41] whoops, wrong channel, sorry [11:42] Ben64, yes it should, that's disgraceful ;) [11:42] hateball, owncloud has it's own issues, mainly with video streaming and large file handling [11:43] zetheroo, in any ways, you need to figure out how to make NetBIOS (nmbd) advertise smbd (cifs/samba) shares. the shares themselves work! [11:43] zetheroo, that's where my knowledge ends. let me know what worked and I will build a mass-deploy workaround for you. I;m off to fix a openstack deployment [11:44] ok tks [11:47] hello, why is ubuntu so shit ? Why does it want to remove gnome-shell and ubuntu-desktop when I try to purge bluez ? [11:48] why does pulseaudio have a strong depenency on bluez when it's running on a machine without any bluetooth adapters ? [11:48] !guidelines | emilsp, no profanity in this channel. [11:48] emilsp, no profanity in this channel.: The guidelines for using the Ubuntu channels can be found here: http://wiki.ubuntu.com/IRC/Guidelines [11:49] cfhowlett, well, then, can anyone help me resurrect pulseaudio daemon ? [11:49] !resurrect pulseaudio daemon [11:49] Exagone313: I am only a bot, please don't think I'm intelligent :) [11:50] but I am serious, why is the bluez package a strong depenendency for gnome ? But it is feasible. We use a slight ubuntu respin which at least already provides the needed packages, of course you could put a configuration on it as well. If you use kerberos as well, you need a keytab though. And I wouldn't recommend either auto-creating nor distributing that. [12:11] svalo: if you want to automate it: I know it is possible, the Uni here did it, but it's a bit painful. The biggest issue is usually the machine keytab, which needs either a domain admin or at least someone with admin rights on the OU you put the machine in. The rest is rather easy to distribute via a ubuntu respin (and, I recommend, your own custom repo which is activated in that respin) [12:11] Fuchs, emilsp, ok, I was reading about oem install that sounds interesting, the only downside woul'd be to disable the user wizard that appears after installing ubuntu. I don't have kerberos auth [12:12] svalo: the machine tab could be done if you used something like forman or cobbler to set the machines up, or something like ansible/salt/puppet to provide machine configurations. But still: it will be a bit of a pain [12:12] Fuchs, ok so I'll opt for normal installation and then remove the user and relative home folder.... [12:12] Hiyas all [12:13] Fuchs, thank you :) [12:13] svalo: I'd recommend that, yes. You're welcome :) [12:17] newbie question: should i install software i want to keep updated via the repos? I had to be infected [12:52] Guys I have a weird situation [12:52] I have a samba dir mounted on my computer. But the computer keeps counting the files in that directory against its own hard drive space [12:52] e.g hard drive is 80G, so 70GB in the Samba drive and it starts doing all the weird no space on disk stuff [12:58] exit [13:01] !test [13:01] Testing... [13:18] yorwos, if you want to use virtualization, use qemu, virtualbox's overhead is way too big. === Lame is now known as llame [13:21] can i host it in cloud maybe ? [13:22] yorwos, you can, but why do you want to do that ? [13:22] I personally run 'small server apps' on a defunct laptop [13:23] im just wondering how can i have and use an email without belonging to google, yahoo, hotmail, whatever [13:24] got stuck while installing ubuntu :8 [13:24] :8 [13:24] :( [13:24] Meinskur, install again [13:25] emilsp, looking at qemu... didn't know it existed [13:25] But I'm not 100% sure if it's stuck or it's working :i [13:25] hy guys. does anybdy have experience with cgroups? i have a problem with a configuration, one control group is sucking up all my swap and ram memory [13:25] I want to be able to see the other Ubuntu 14.04 laptop on the Network in Nautilus ... how does one get this to happen? [13:27] knob, qemu is so nice, especially because of libvirtd and all the nice userspace tools. [13:27] how do I cancel the installation when it's stuck (ubuntu) [13:27] Meinskur, at what stage has it stuck ? [13:27] Meinskur, if you haven't done anything to the partitions yet, just reboot [13:28] i just alloctated drive space, and it got stuck when I pressed "install Now" [13:28] did you allocate or did you already start writing partition data to the drive? [13:29] I think I just allocated (new to linux and OS installations) [13:29] then you should be safe to reboot [13:29] but before you do, press ctrl+alt+F1 or whichever f button [13:30] ok, ctrl+alt+f1 did something [13:30] I have a command screen thing now [13:30] not sure what it's called [13:30] if you see a terminal, type top and see whether or not there is a process that's taking up a lot of cpu and memory [13:31] since you switched to a different tty, your system isn't totaly hung up yet :) [13:31] root seems to take around 30% [13:32] root is the user name, what's the process name ? I don't know how I see the name of the process [13:35] maybe the resolution is too low, so you must use arrow keys to move to the left [13:35] the resolution don't seem to low, I can see the whole screen [13:36] yes, but if you run top in the terminal, you should be able to see the command names on the leftmost collumn [13:36] PID? [13:36] sorry, rightmost collumn, COMMAND [13:36] OH! xD [13:36] i'ts called Xorg [13:37] and ntfsresize [13:37] so you're already resizing your windows partition and this will take a while [13:37] oh, so it's not "stuck" it's just working? [13:38] thus under no circumstances should you reboot, because you most likely will lose data [13:38] Meinskur, hopefully :) [13:38] I don't care to keep any data that I had on my laptop [13:38] but I just did an along side installation just in case [13:38] well, then you could've just nuked the windows partition, but anyways, resizing partitions usually takes a lot of time, thus you're better off waiting this one out [13:39] awesome, I'll wait it out then :) [13:39] will you be here for a while? [13:43] I am pretty sure you'll have to wait for ubuntu to update their drivers, using 'nonrepo' drivers will break your system upon kernel users. [13:43] hmm... [13:43] @emilsp was this pointed at user13? or me? :) [13:44] you, davevanloo [13:44] I just noticed that the allocation GUI shows Windows 7, But i have windows Vista on here, not sure if that does matter or not [13:44] Meinskur, doesn't matter, the bootloader thinks my girlfriend has vista, whilst she's using windows 7, they're just too similar [13:44] awesome [13:45] @emilsp would correctly building the drivers provided by the nvidia website perhaps work? as according the them they should be able to drive my cards [13:45] I finally found out what is needed in smb.conf to get this going :D [13:45] IT WASN'T STUCK!! :d [13:46] devanloo, yes, for the time being, but you'll have to make sure you rebuild the drivers every time you get a kernel update [13:46] sorry, davevanloo, screwed up your name [13:47] ooh yes.. i had read about that.. emilsp , its annoying to do.. having to exit the x-server to do so.. its disorienting when trying to do on the fly aswel! but then again.. everything pc.. preparation is key! ^ [13:48] davevanloo, well, it is rather simple, actually, and well, when I was doing it, I didn't kill the X server, I just reran the install script provided by Nvidia and it worked. You just have to remember to do it after a kernel update. [13:48] otherwise you'll be left with a dark shell upon the next reboot and you'll have to install the driver again. [13:49] mhmm, i did try building it manually on my old system and it failed, exually both with and without the xserver started.., that was before i found out about the apt-get ***-current way of installing it [13:49] ops forgot name emilsp [13:50] don't worry :) well, I haven't used ubuntu in a while, at least I haven't had to upgrade nvidias drivers on ubuntu for a while, so things might've changed. [13:51] mhmm, still rather noobish about some linux/ubuntu things, could you explain a bit more on how to make sure my kernel headers are ecrtually there? [13:52] emilsp ^ [13:52] davevanloo, check sudo apt-get install linux-headers and select your current version [13:53] davevanloo, I am sure there should be some documentation from ubuntu on how to use 'out of tree'/out of repo nvidia drivers [13:53] iptables: you around perchance? [13:54] oke.., feeling really noobish for asking..,but better then fra**ing up, how do i find my version? [13:55] davevanloo, don't feel bad about yourself just because you don't know something, and installing headers won't hurt you, but the correct command is uname -a [13:55] 3.16.0-30-generic it is :) [13:56] 能看见中文吗 [13:57] /? [18:21] Sorry SFTP [18:22] n473: FTP is awful and unsecure [18:22] ActionParsnip: it does have an SSL section; for my purposes it will be used over PPTP anyway [18:23] sudo: /usr/bin/sudo must be owned by uid 0 and have the setuid bit set [18:23] what does that mean? [18:23] n473: install openssh-server and you have an SFTP service. Connect using your Ubuntu login account. Need more users? Just add an Ubuntu user. [18:23] just seems odd that it would grant the "template" ftpuser the default shell /etc [18:24] ANJ7: means the file owner needs to be root and the setuid permission bit on the executable file needs to be turned on [18:24] ANJ7: it means you have been messing with permissions on the sudoers file === zz_zz_AlphaTech is now known as AlphaTech [18:24] oh, how can i resort that? [18:24] ActionParsnip: my requirements are a bit more particular; the send hosts are Mikrotiks running RouterOS, and there are too many of them to warrant ssh/keypairs,etc. [18:25] ANJ7: drop to root recovery and you can make the changes [18:25] which makes ftp the option with the least administrative overhead [18:25] how to drop to root recovery? [18:25] n473: you don't have to use keys with SFTP or even SSH. [18:25] I just chmod /usr/bin files [18:25] chmod 777 [18:25] oh SNAP [18:26] will I not be able to revert it back? [18:26] ANJ7: reinstall. You have butchered your OS [18:26] wow, [18:26] ANJ7: no feasibly. Why would you do that? [18:26] reinstall the os? [18:27] I just wanted to give permission to some files [18:27] now is there no other way? [18:27] if you remember what those files were, and what their permissions were before you changed them [18:27] ANJ7: unless you want to go through every file in a good install and make a note of the access then copy it individually to your install OS, you will need to reinstall [18:27] you could change them back [18:28] ANJ7: you don't need to give access to files in /usr/bin. They are delicate and purposeful. [18:28] ANJ7: got a backup? [18:28] can I give them the sudo again? [18:28] nope [18:28] ANJ7: then you are screwed [18:29] so reinstall is the only way? [18:29] valuable lesson: chmod 777 is a bad idea. backup your data and reinstall [18:29] other than that long option [18:29] ANJ7: plus throwing 777 round is stupid. It removes all security from the things you change, in this case the system binaries. Anyone or anything can make changes to the files unhindered [18:29] ActionParsnip: as for using keys/etc, we could just go anonymous, but we need to retain the ability to differentiate between clients and, if need be, deny access individually [18:30] ok, fine. I'll reinstall the os [18:30] and you can't automate askpass or expect functionality with RouterOS [18:30] bye. Cya [18:30] enjoy! [18:32] n473: I always chmod +x ./.sh on things that i've made, I know I've come into this late, just wondering if that's a nono [18:33] baxx: as long as you're doing it as your own user, and not as root, you're fine [18:34] foo, try #apache or #php [18:34] you have to chmod +x scripts you've written in order to be able to execute them [18:34] pbx: thanks, can't hurt to try there, too [18:34] n473: yea I am, though I haven't really considered that before tbh... yeah I just do it to run things. [20:22] please state it then [20:23] yes [20:23] is it on? [20:24] agent47: state the problem [20:24] can someone help me? [20:24] hqtp: Turning off trailing white space did it. Been putting up with that for years, just never doing anything about it until now. phew. [20:24] thx [20:24] agent47: state the problem [20:24] naftilos76, what is this script doing, if you dont mind me asking? === mkv is now known as m4v [20:24] help me! [20:25] halfburnttoast: it starts ruby script daemons inside a dir (as many as it can find). Let me gist it for you [20:25] ugurkoltuk, that paste does not show any cardreader, try in terminal: lspci # does this show your cardreader? [20:25] https://gist.github.com/anonymous/85c69ed190a931df781d [20:26] naftilos76, does it need to be in the init.d? like, does it need to perform special operations depending on the runlevel? [20:26] or does it just need to be started at boot? [20:26] DerHeks: well, it seems like it does not http://paste.ubuntu.com/10766167/ [20:26] Well, it is supposed to run on 3 where a normal system is run [20:27] i just applied the defaults with update-rc.d [20:27] that is not the problem (i think) [20:27] !runlevels [20:27] In Ubuntu all runlevels except 0,1 and 6 are by default equal. Also keep in mind that Ubuntu now uses !Upstart instead of System V init so there is normally no /etc/inittab. [20:27] Hm [20:27] ugurkoltuk, indeed. [20:27] it might also be better to just call it from the /etc/rc.local file [20:28] DerHeks: [20:28] unless it really needs to do differetn things depending on the runlevel [20:28] ugurkoltuk, same output when you insert a memorycard? [20:28] DerHeks: so that reader is physically problem? [20:28] I have taken a look at upstart tool, it just seemed easier to go with init.d [20:28] DerHeks: let me check but i'm afraid yes. [20:28] I mean there is nothing wrong with that! There are so many scripts in there [20:29] The thing is that it does not start on boot. That is my problem [20:29] DerHeks: exactly the same output http://paste.ubuntu.com/10766191/ [20:29] naftilos76, have you tried calling the daemon from /etc/rc.local ? [20:31] ugurkoltuk, when i search for your chipset "SMBus: Intel Corporation 7 Series/C210 Series" + "cardreader" i see lots of bugreports. [20:31] halfburnttoast: Why are you avoiding commenting on anything regarding init.d scripts? No i did not try to trigger the daemons from rc.local . I will do that but the way i chose should work, right? [20:32] halfburnttoast: Is there anything wrong with init.d scripts? [20:32] DerHeks: well, i hope that's a sw issue then [20:32] halfburnttoast: It seems straightforward [20:33] Does anybody know if init.d scripts are initiated with a 'start' argument during boot? [20:33] This is my concern [20:33] well, yes, that's why upstart and systemd are replacing them. They're difficult to manage, especially when it comes to the sequencing [20:33] i was just offering a solution that might work better [20:34] halfburnttoast: I am not complaining man. Thanks for that, i am just wondering why the script does not work on boot. [20:35] my guess would be that there's a problem with sequencing. such as a required dameon that it needs that hasn't been started yet [20:35] it's hard to tell just from the description [20:36] ok thanks man [20:36] We have a Ubuntu server and I know it has a website and an IP address, when I put the IP address the website shows up, I want to know in which directory the website files reside, I am trying to look into the source of the webpage but cant find it, is it in /var/www ? [20:36] naftilos76, they also tend to want a particular format [20:36] naftilos76, http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/20357/how-can-i-make-a-script-in-etc-init-d-start-at-boot [20:36] #fo0bar [20:37] y7u3: It'll likely be in /var/www/html [20:38] halfburnttoast: i can see chkconfig in there. It has been dropped recently. [20:38] hkrrsx: there is a /public_html in it and there are buncha php files in it but I cannot locate the main index.html file [20:38] anyways, rc.local, by default, is called at the end of the runlevel's rc#.d/, so it should have everything loaded hopefully [20:39] y7u3 there's also #ubuntu-server [20:39] y7u3: Is there supposed to be an index.html ? [20:39] i ll give it a try [20:39] y7u3: Or is the main page supposed to be index.php ? [20:39] hkrrsx: not sure :( [20:40] hkrrsx: once I found the directory where the files are by using grep and the content ..but I forgot [20:40] y7u3: you should look at the configuration for the website itself to ID the directory the files are in [20:40] also consider the index might not be HTML if it's a PHP site [20:41] PHP-driven site* [20:41] okk teward [20:41] s/HTML/pure HTML/ [20:41] naftilos76, ah, well I'm not sure what the recommended ubuntu way is anymore for making init scripts, but it's on the way out anyawys so there might not be a published method [20:42] teward: do php have a main file ? like index.php ? [20:42] halfburnttoast: i just noticed that the sym links are 20. The should be 99 [20:42] y7u3: depends on the site and the configuration [20:42] naftilos76, but, for the time being, rc.local is still called at the end of the runlevel, thus everything should be loaded without needing to make a new init script [20:42] hi,i have wi-fi/bluetooth problem. [20:42] y7u3: as i said, you need to depend on the configuration file for your site, NOT the 'index file' assumption, as in nginx you can override the index page to be whatever. [20:43] y7u3: you have to first determine what web server is in use, then look at the configuration directory to determine the site files [20:43] y7u3: if it's apache2, then /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/ contains the 'files' of the configuration for the sites - start looking at the configs to see what's served from where [20:43] halfburnttoast: When you do 'update-rc.d script defaults' can you define the SXX number? [20:46] naftilos76, I believe so, i think the man page has examples in it for that [20:46] i saw the man page [20:47] i did that but the script still refuses to start on boot [20:47] all the sym links are S99 [20:47] what is the sequence number for it? [20:47] all of them? in the entire directory? [20:47] no [20:48] the rest of the sym links are various nums [20:48] i am talking about the cp script [20:48] it is K99 on 01 6 and S99 on 2345 [20:50] naftilos76, do you have encryptfs running on your /home partition? [22:44] vitimiti: You can install Ubuntu using the mini.iso or the netinstall.iso, as well as using PXE. [22:56] brb [22:57] HomelessSanta: i'm guessing you have a vps through arpnetworks and the server came with that repository by default [22:57] Ben64, Nah I don't even know how to use a VPN or VPS. I had to switch servers over the Main Server simply due to it wasn't working and the speeds I was getting were terrible at the time. [22:58] Going to revert back to the Main Server to see if it at least gives me a package. If not I'd figure either use a PPA or manually grab it then install it. [22:59] Ben64, Thanks a lot bud that seemed to have fixed the problem. [22:59] HomelessSanta: well how did you find that random mirror [23:01] Ben64, In "Software & Updates" you can select different servers aka mirrors. [23:16] not true [23:16] six_ have you heard of lubuntu? [23:16] six_, how old? what's the specs. You could install xubuntu 14.04 [23:16] So what you are saying is that if i upgrade to Xubuntu or Lubuntu the card should work - or are you just saying that because you think i should upgrade anyways? [23:17] Because from what i read the card works better on older versions [23:17] In ubuntu 6 it worked out of the box [23:17] you're not going to get any support until you run a supported version [23:17] Thats what i thought... [23:21] Newer kernels always support newer hardware 'Out of the box'. Hence, unsupported versions might not have the necessary driver module to correctly use the video card.
