mefistosince upgrade to 15.04, several systray icons don't appear: knemo, dropbox, etc. Any solution to this? What's causing it?04:48
hyper_chmefisto: bugs04:53
hyper_chand people still believe in dropbox?04:53
mefistohyper_ch: what is a more believable alternative?04:54
hyper_chdepend what you need04:54
mefistohyper_ch: like dropbox, free, folder syncing04:55
hyper_chrsync04:55
mefisto??04:56
hyper_chrsync syncs folders from a to b04:56
mefistothat's software, right? not really a service like dropbox04:56
hyper_chdropbox also consists of software04:57
mefistook thanks04:57
hyper_chthen there's ownCloud and bittorrent sync04:57
hyper_chand a lot of other tools04:57
hyper_chbut it all depends what you need... "folder syncing" doesn't say much04:58
hyper_chdo you want to share with others04:58
hyper_chit's it syncing in both ways04:58
hyper_chdo you need a local copy at all, if not maybe sshfs or cifs over openvpn04:58
hyper_chI just don't like my data be stored some place where I don't know what they do ;)04:59
hyper_chbut if you don't mind that and don't won't any hassle setting it up, then go with dropbox ;)05:00

assurbanipalhi,is there a way to get the system tray working with gtk apps?09:20
ejayassurbanipal, check out this http://blog.martin-graesslin.com/blog/2014/06/where-are-my-systray-icons/09:30
assurbanipalejay: i did but cannot figure out the solution!i installed the packages he suggests but still not working for me09:31

assurbanipalejay: is a MAJOR drawback...09:32
MoonUnit`did you try installing trayer?09:33
ejayit is not working for me either (except this wmsystemtray)09:33
MoonUnit`i prefer it over wmsystemtray09:33
ejaybut it's ugly like holy hell09:33
ejaywe need to wait till they repair/finish systray09:33
assurbanipalMoonUnit`: trayer at least displays the entries, but overlaps with the panel09:34
MoonUnit`if you type trayer --help you can see it has a lot of options.09:34
MoonUnit`you can move it where you want, how long/high and transparancy09:34

Taggnostr4Hello14:57
Taggnostr4A couple of days ago I updated to 15.10 on an old laptop and after the login screen everything was black. I spent a few hours debugging but nothing worked. Now I downloaded 15.10 on a USB drive and started it from there, and I can only see the background with the triangles14:59
Taggnostr4Does this mean that 15.04 can not work on my system and I have to stick to 14.10?15:00
pkulasTaggnostr4 : How old laptop is it15:02
Avihay_workTaggnostr4: that's more or less what happens to me in VirtualBox15:02
Taggnostr4Quite old, 8+ years15:02
Avihay_workafter I install guest additions gfx driver15:02
pkulasTaggnostr4 : for such old pc i would rather think about a distro with xfce/lxde15:03
Taggnostr4When I asked a couple of days ago a few people reported similar issues15:03
Taggnostr4pkulas, 14.10 was running fine, apparently the problem is related to the nvidia drivers on 15.0415:04
Taggnostr4At some point I managed to get windows to show up, but they were without borders15:05
Taggnostr4I had to click blindly on the bottom left to get the menu to appear from the darkness15:05
pkulasDid you try to restart live usb? Sometimes it happens to crash15:06
Taggnostr4Another symptom I noticed was kwin_x11 eating all the CPU15:06
Taggnostr4Trying now15:06
Taggnostr4What I'm talking about was after I upgraded the main installation15:07
pkulasoh so 14.10 to 15.0415:07

hyper_chas said, it's a major change15:14
Taggnostr4I'm trying to figure out of there's a way to get 15.04 to work, possibly without formatting15:14
Taggnostr4If*15:14
hyper_chTaggnostr4: well, I backed up first.... (I always have backups, make them nightly)15:14
Taggnostr4Otherwise I'll have to format and reinstall 14.1015:14

BluesKajyes amari, but as you can see some users still have serious problems19:53
amariBluesKaj: It's to be expected for the first release with plasma5. It's much better than I expected :D19:54

EtriaphOh, I know, I'm not complaining, but I used to use Dolphin quite a bit with some crazy places setup :D20:11

Taggnostr4Hello21:45
Taggnostr4I'm trying to boot from a live USB, but apparently I have some issue with the nouveau drivers, is there a way to use the nvidia ones?21:46
Taggnostr4When kubuntu starts I see a white and black chessboard and I can't do anything from there21:47
Taggnostr4This is with a 32 bits live of 14.1021:48
Taggnostr4With the 64 bits version I can see the desktop background and access the tty, but the rest doesn't work21:49
genii!nomodeset | Taggnostr421:51
ubottuTaggnostr4: A common kernel (boot)parameter is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot into a black screen or show corrupted splash screen. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 on how to use this parameter21:51
geniiTaggnostr4: There is not really a way to get the Nvidia proprietary drivers onto the livecd/liveusb, unfortunately21:52
Taggnostr4Thanks, I'm checking the link21:53
=== luc4_ is now known as luc4
geniiTaggnostr4: The alternative would be to use the minimal install CD ( which puts a commandline system ), from that minimal install to enable the restricted repositories, install all the prerequisites to the nvidia driver ( linux headers, dkms, and build essential) then the driver , reboot, install kubuntu-desktop22:01
Taggnostr4I tried nomodeset but the screen is still black22:02
Taggnostr4I'll do another attempt tomorrow22:02
Taggnostr4Thanks anyway22:02
geniiTaggnostr4: Well, sorry it is being problemmatic, but glad to try and assist.22:04
gunndawghow can I create a bootable USB stick in 15.04? I used startup disk creator in 14.04 but 15.04 does not have that22:10
dizqoTaggnostr4: have you tried simply pressing F6 to enable nomodeset? At least this way you can be sure you didn't type it in the wrong place between other boot options. Basically F6, down, down down (highlight nomodeset), Enter22:13
dizqo(it worked for my old GeForce)22:13
darthanubisno video in dragonplayer22:14
Taggnostr4I tried F6 but the only thing it seemed to do was to toggle some output on and off22:14
darthanubisaudio only22:14
Taggnostr4dizqo, when am I supposed to press it?22:15
dizqoTaggnostr4: (sorry I meant to clarify this is for when booting the installer cd/usb)22:15
Taggnostr4After the bios and before grub?22:15
dizqoTaggnostr4: right after your bios has finished loading (black screen) hold any key and the installing cd/usb should boot into a mode where you can set options. There use F6. This is only for booting from the installation media. I don't know if installing from a safe (nomodeset) environment fixes the problem for future boots from the hard drive though22:17
Taggnostr4I just tried again, it jumps from the screen with the Kubuntu logo to a log screen with info passing by22:17
geniigunndawg: The install image is now hybrid, you don't need to do anything tricky, just use dd to directly copy the iso file onto an USB stick22:19
gunndawggenii: oh really? so just drag the iso image into the usb drive and boot to it?22:22
Taggnostr4dizqo, I can't get f6 to work22:24
dizqoTaggnostr4: you need to hold a key(any key) before the kubuntu logo appears and until you see a screen with options. Try holding it right after leaving the bios when the blank screen appears.22:24
geniigunndawg: No, use command line. So if the image is in your home directory and called foo.iso and the usb you want to boot from is /dev/sdd  then in konsole: sudo dd if=foo.iso of=/dev/sdd22:24
Taggnostr4I'm using unebootin fwiw22:24
Taggnostr4So after it boots I get its menu22:25
gunndawggenii: thanks22:25
geniigunndawg: dd does not have a progress indicator, so after issuing the command, just wait until it returns back to the normal prompt22:26
genii( this is normal behaviour)22:26
dizqoTaggnostr4: hmm maybe you get a grub menu at some point. Basically the time to press (and hold until options appear) the key is right when your pc starts booting the usbkey/dvd where your live desktop/install is. That's earlier than any Kubuntu logo.22:28
dizqoTaggnostr4: whatever you use to tell your pc to boot not from hard drive but from usb/dvd, be it the bios or grub, it's *right* after this step22:29
dizqofor me it looks like a black screen with a blinking white underscore at the top left corner and lasts for about 25 seconds (probably because its a dvd, needs to start spinning). I need to hold the key during the whole time to make sure I catch the moment where it looks to check if i'm pressing a key or not22:31
Taggnostr4I now tried to keep the space bar pressed, it just kept beeping until I left it, and the unetbootin menu appeared as usual22:31
dizqoif it beeps, i'm guessing you are still in the bios and have not started to boot yet22:32
dizqocan you make sure that you are booting the live media, and not from hard drive?22:33
Taggnostr4Yes22:33
Taggnostr4I disabled the HD from the bios22:33
darthanubiswonder if baloo_file was fixed. Lets see if it ever stops scanning22:34
Taggnostr4If I press shift I can get into the grub menu22:34
dizqook so there is grub on your live media, I'm really not sure but i would try to get into the grub menu, select the standard option and hold any key from there for as long as it takes (maybe a minutes)22:36
kairoxhello every one how can i remove the plasma 5.2.2 desktop because i face some probleme with it and i want ot reinstall in again22:37
dizqoi can be a bit ocd, so I sometimes quickly lift my finger and press it back down every 5-10 seconds to make sure the key press is registered and all22:37
Taggnostr4Grub is on the HD, not sure about the live usb22:37
dizqoTaggnostr4: well if grub is only on the HD, you shouldn't even see it if you are actually booting from the live media22:38
kairoxhello every one how can i remove the plasma 5.2.2 desktop because i face some probleme with it and i want ot reinstall in again22:38
Taggnostr4Yes, I can only see with the HD enabled22:39
darthanubisplasma 5.3 beta crashes 10x a day22:41
darthanubisat least22:41
dizqoYou should re-do the steps to pick the dvd/usb drive in the bios and boot your install media. as soon as it's actually leaving the bios screen(s) and reading from the external media is when you press any key. no grub involved.22:41
