d9500i got ti to work in cheese02:43
darthanubisd9500, Hooray! I took the webcam back to Currys/PC World and replaced it for another C270. This one worked first time, and when I checked the device id it showed 046d:0825. I suspect there is a ?batch? of these C270s with the wrong device id. Hopefully this series of posts will save someone else spending ages trying to diagnose the problem - when all they need to do is get another webcam. Now back to 12:04, which I absolutely love.02:43
gzcwnki followed the ubuntu doc but it wont answer queries so I am wondering if I am missing some =thing I am meant to do02:43

petrvsit's like, history -c; history -w or something04:24

petrvsI always do history -c; rm ~/.bash_history 'cause I forget04:24

wafflejockTotalEclipse, how far does you booting up get at this point do you see grub?04:26

IcemanV9just what somsip said ... sudo apt-get purge ttf-mscorefonts-installer04:26
IcemanV9Arial/Courier fonts will be there once you installed them04:27
TotalEclipseYeah I select the os in grub but then it hangs on the loading screen04:27
HelpeRXso this is what you should do mount /dev/sda2 /mnt/ mkdir -p /mnt/boot/efi mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/boot/efi/ for i in /dev/ /dev/pts /proc/ /sys/ run ; do mount -B $i /mnt/$i ; done  chroot /mnt/ sudo apt-get --reinstall grub04:27

wafflejockTotalEclipse, the nomodeset will use the vesa video drivers in case it's a graphics problem and with quiet gone you should see everything that's being started by the init system04:30

Rene_hi everybody, is there away to lock the clock in ubuntu so only root can alter it ? see: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/05/01/ubuntu_to_shutter_yearold_clock_unlock_bug/09:41
Dro__hi, i installed vdr twice : first time using apt-get and then manually.. after i used apt-get remove --purge vdr  the command "vdr" is still working !09:47
Dro__anyone have an idea how to completly remove it please ?09:47
twigzHello hello09:48
Rene_dro maybe you can search for vdr in the synaptic package manager ?09:48
Rene_maybe it can still see something, not sure09:48
Ben64Dro__: if you installed it "manually" you'll have to undo that09:48
SchrodingersScatDro__: you could try 'which vdr'? you say you installed it manually, so that's probably still around09:49
Rene_I will aks my own question again :) , is there away to lock the clock in ubuntu so only root can alter it ? see: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/05/01/ubuntu_to_shutter_yearold_clock_unlock_bug/09:49
Dro__SchrodingersScat, which vdr09:49
Dro__/usr/local/bin/vdr09:49
=== `hypermist` is now known as sleepypc
Dro__i just have to delete /usr/local/bin/vdr ?09:49
Dro__Ben64, the problem is that i installed it using 'make', i don't know how to undo that //09:50
Ben64Dro__: consult the documentation or the makefile09:50
=== sleepypc is now known as `hypermist`
tos-1Dro__: Hope, that the makefile provides a "uninstall" target. Otherwise read the "install" target carefully and undo every op. Next time use something like checkinstall.09:55
Dro__tos-1, no --uninstall option :(09:55
tos-1Dro__: No, a uninstall target, which enables you to run "make uninstall": See if `grep "^uninstall:" Makefile` outputs something; and consult the documentation like Ben64 said.09:57
Dro__i installed it from here https://github.com/FernetMenta/xbmc09:57
Ben64it has an uninstall09:58
Rene_what would happen if i made the command "date" only accessible by root ? would it stop this clock bug ?09:58
Dro__Ben64, how can i do it ?09:58
bekksRene_: No. An attacker with physical access can gain root privileges easily.09:59
Ben64Dro__: make uninstall09:59
Rene_so it's some other obscure way that triggers the setting of a new time in this clock set bug ?10:00
Rene_i would need to install the latest version of sudo ? and only that will help ?10:00
Rene_outside of ubuntu10:01
Ben64Rene_: if you want to risk breaking your system, sure10:02
Rene_it's weird that this bug is not concidered severe or what ever10:03

Rene_no its also bugged10:05
Rene_all versions from 12 till 15 have the bug10:05
`hypermist`can anyonee answer my question ?10:06
Ben64Dro__: doesn't change the answer, either use uninstall, consult the documentation, or manually remove every file it installed by looking at the makefile10:06
cluelesspersonQuestion, what's the quickeest and easiest way to setup a mail server in debian to get emails from outside?10:06

Rene_so yeh i cant do anything at all10:07
Rene_to me this is a gaping security hole10:07
Ben64it isn't though, if you actually look at it10:07
cluelesspersonBen42, ubuntu server si what I'm using, ubuntu is a subset of debian10:07
bekksRene_: The security hole is you letting an attacker physically access your machine.10:08
Rene_if a virus was loaded, it could not get sudo rights this way ?10:08
Ben64cluelessperson: then don't come into #ubuntu talking about debian10:08
Rene_why physical acces ?10:08
cluelesspersonBen64, Ubuntu IS debian, dude.10:08
cluelesspersonjesus10:08
Ben64cluelessperson: it really isn't10:08
bekksRene_: ""I don't see a way for an attacker, without physical access, to use an arbitrary code execution vulnerability in combination with the issue that you've described in this bug to elevate his/her privileges," he says."10:08
cluelesspersonBen64, based on it10:09
bekksRene_: So you need physical access. If thats what you are afraid of, prevent it.10:09
Rene_i don't understand why you would need physical access, what is diffirent then ?10:09
bekksRene_: Did you actually read the article you linked?10:10
Rene_what is the diffirence between having physical access and a virus running unaware of me in the background ?10:10
Rene_yes10:10
Rene_and i read all the bug reports too10:10
Rene_and tried to search for anything related to it10:10
bekksRene_: Well, your article states you need physical access.10:10
Rene_i just don;t understand what people mean by having physical acces and how that differs from a program already running as local user on the machine10:11
Rene_how physical acces can make you do more i mean, i dont understand that10:11
Rene_i mean i can just boot with an usb and do anything i like with physical access, as long as my system is not fully encrypted10:13

acz32dreamon: are you speaking english? what do you mean by change the look of the other?15:06
Rene_wow oke , i didnt know asking for a solution to something was making drama15:06
k1l_Rene_: if you install faulty software (aka virus) it will not make you safe to need root permissions to set the clock.15:06
MonkeyDustdreamon  a DE is different layout, but a theme is the look of the layout you ar using15:07
Rene_i like to plug every hole i encounter, is this wrong ?15:07
daftykinsRene_: let me get this straight, your entire conversation here is about thinking it's a security issue that someone doesn't need a password to change the time on your computer?15:07
acz32Rene_: no, but debian is not vulnerable to that so different distros have different philosophy. some are more secure by default than others15:08

ActionParsnipstacks88: yes, and tested to be solid16:15
kunjistacks88: packages will receive security upgrades and will eventually be upgraded to newer versions, they may not always be the latest versions though.16:16
stacks88kunji understood, thanks16:16
stacks88On my ubuntu server 14.04.2 LTS, ive ran apt-get update;apt-get upgrade.. all packages updated, except it says The following packages have been kept back:  linux-generic linux-headers-generic linux-image-generic -- so does this mean that I should do apt-get dist-upgrade ? And that will upgrade the kernel, BUT still keep me on LTS, correct? and the only way to upgrade PAST LTS is to do:16:16
stacks88do-release-upgrade , correct?16:16
stacks88in other words, apt-get dist-upgrade is not going to push me off LTS (to a non-lts)16:17
kunjistacks88: dist-upgrade16:17
stacks88want to remain on LTS*16:17
kunjistacks88: right16:17
stacks88ok great16:17
stacks88and sorry one last thing (i think), by doing dist-upgrade, will the new kernel already be in effect or will it require a reboot?16:18

kk0710any network guru's in here who want to look at the last few entries in my sylog and help me figure out what is going on with my realtek wireless adapter?  I was having problems from the get go but thought I had them figured out by following some instructions in the forums but then I got a response from a bug report I sent in and told to update the firmware on my router, now the problem is back but 10 times worse and I have no clue anymore.16:40
fermiondaftykins and ubottu, i have entered in the recovery mode and i run that that command and i got the following: https://www.dropbox.com/s/34oag6h8sp9fv4b/20150501_173041.JPG?dl=016:41

kk0710daftykins, I am only having problems on one laptop and only when boted into unbuntu?16:42

stacks88okay but on a real machine (dedicated server), i have a ubuntu box that is 14.04.2, it says The following packages have been kept back:  linux-image-generic linux-image-server -- so for this actual machine, i would do sudo apt-get dist-upgrade , and then reboot? Or would i do update-grub first *then* reboot? wanting to stay on LTS16:44

ikoniakarl_: but it needs to mount using a userspace file system17:58

ikoniafazer: so the server is having an internal error17:58

daftykinsharris: off topic means you don't ask it here.23:26

baudelaireno sorry. just trying to get a hang of ubuntu and checking out xchat23:26
baudelaireso is this pretty much where one comes for technical support?23:27

JFlashhow to fix this?23:27
darthanubis!support23:28

Bashing-ombaudelaire: For ubuntu tech support, yes .23:28
JFlashwhy --config-java does not update JAVA_HOME23:28
Hanz_ZimmerHello everyone, I just installed Ubuntu 14.04 and I have a GTX 760. I have three monitors connected to the card. 2DVI are being used and 1HDMI to DVI cable is being used. When I turn on my computer, the monitor connected to the first DVI port is used for BIOS, Grub, and booting.  But once the login screen appears, that monitor turns off and the Second DVI montior as well as the HDMI monitor turn on. Then, in Ubuntu, the first DVI m23:28
SchrodingersScatJFlash: this could be the ticket? https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Java#Choosing_the_default_Java_to_use23:29
Hanz_ZimmerI've tried both the open source driver and the proprietary driver.23:29
daftykinsHanz_Zimmer: you can't type that long a message on IRC :) "...in Ubuntu, the first DVI m..." is as far as we got23:29
JFlashSchrodingersScat, thank you23:29
flipapyHanz_Zimmer, all i know about is the check for additional drivers thing, dod you check for aditional hardware drivers yet?23:29
flipapyoh nvm, gthats all i know about for now Hanz_Zimmer23:29
daftykinsflipapy: best to stay quiet when you really don't know23:29
daftykinsHanz_Zimmer: get yourself the xorg-edgers PPA installed and try a newer driver23:30
netgeari am having issues with DVI skipping bios and just coming on when ubuntu logs in. started out of no where very weird.... also tried turning off fast boot in bios with no luck. and trying a new DVI.. :(23:30
Hanz_ZimmerWhat is the name of the package?23:30
JFlashSchrodingersScat, that page doesnt say anything about JAVA_HOME, unfortunately23:31
daftykinsHanz_Zimmer: i dunno read what they have version # wise then install nvidia-###23:31
daftykinsHanz_Zimmer: a PPA is not a package23:31
JFlashSchrodingersScat, I already run the installation and configuration, my problem is with JAVA_HOME23:31
Hanz_ZimmerI know it's not. I added teh PPA. I was wondering what the name of the file I was supposed to download was. I'll figure it out23:32
JFlashSchrodingersScat, when I type java --version it tells me correct java (oracle), but JAVA_HOME points to something else!23:32
SchrodingersScatJFlash: I misunderstood then, I thought you were trying to use a different version of java.23:32
JFlashSchrodingersScat, ok, no problem23:32
JFlashSchrodingersScat, you know what I must be seeting the java home var manually inside some file, I will check it out. thanks23:33
SchrodingersScatJFlash: yeah, I don't have that on mine.23:34

daftykinsi'm torn really because you have a pay for support option, so it makes more sense to use that23:55
netgearim sorta worried the i7 may be messed up but its new23:55

netgearcomp is less than a month old, i dont play games so was not worried about getting a graphic card23:58
netgearunless it damages the i7 i rather use on board23:59
daftykinsperhaps you're installing with updates enabled and keep booting into a non-working kernel23:59
