xAndreLopesxIs there a way to make ubuntu more friendly user to create shortcuts?00:30

ubottukk0710: VNC is a protocol for remote desktop. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VNCOverSSH describes how to use it securely.  It works best over fast connections, otherwise look at !FreeNX07:45
kk0710thank you07:46
lotuspsychjekk0710: for single use, you can try teamviewer also07:46
kk0710well maybe I should be specific.  Really I just have a media server set up and want to be able to log in to download torrents and stuff without having to walk to desktop07:47
lotuspsychjekk0710: keep in mind that remote software is always a risk07:48
lotuspsychjekk0710: its best to manage your machines over ssh instead07:48
kk0710well I wasn't sure how I would do torrents that way.  Going to pirate bay etc07:48
lotuspsychjekk0710: a torrent client that supports CLI perhaps (from terminal)?07:49
kk0710why is remote desktop dangerous?07:50
lotuspsychjekk0710: as you connected to the internet, and keep teamviewer 24/7 open per example07:50
lotuspsychjekk0710: someone could exploit it and take over your desktop over remote07:50
geirhakk0710: you can enable the builtin remote desktop on the desktop, then connect with remmina from your laptop07:51
kk0710I dont want to open it it to the net just my local network07:51
lotuspsychjekk0710: if both boxes are offline, you can do that07:51
kk0710geirha could you elaborate07:51
kk0710they are online but I am not forwarding anything to them07:52
lotuspsychjekk0710: but if they are connected to internet i would not suggest07:52
kk0710I think it's a non issue no one is going to randomly try to hack my machines lol07:52
lotuspsychjekk0710: then its a risk07:52
lotuspsychjekk0710: teamviewer and vnc dont get hacked randomly, they get hammered every second a day07:52
kk0710I think I'll risk it, if some one wants my dsktop they can have it07:52
lotuspsychjekk0710: try to setup ssh and fail2ban, you will see what happens07:52
somsipkk0710: just set up logs to monitor attack attempts, and react if/when you start getting them07:52
kk0710it literally just has media on it07:53
somsipkk0710: they dont care about your media. Getting control of a machine that can be used for spam, or suchlike, is much more important. But OT here.07:54
kk0710OT?07:54
somsip!ot07:54
ubottu#ubuntu is the Ubuntu support channel, for all Ubuntu-related support questions. Please use #ubuntu-offtopic for other topics (though our !guidelines apply there too). Thanks!07:54
kk0710remoting is off topic?  um ok07:55
geirhakk0710: Open the dash and search for desktop sharing (I think that's what it's called in english)07:55
lotuspsychjekk0710: try ssh mate07:55
kk0710no I want remote but thanks07:55
somsipkk0710: no, the conversation we were getting into about being secure is OT for here, though of prime importance.07:55
geirhaon your laptop, you can use remmina to connect to your desktop, with VNC protocl07:56
kk0710geirha how do I activate on my desktop?07:56
geirhakk0710: Run the launcher called something like "Desktop Sharing" (or maybe "Remote Desktop Sharing")07:57
geirhakk0710: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QJ5VKpeJYdg/UQJ4joMQQwI/AAAAAAAAA6Q/cABLXTc3ti4/s1600/ubuntu-12-share_desktop-1.png07:58
kk0710geirha, ok cool, and any recommendations for protection?  not sure how anyone could see this outside my entwork07:58
lotuspsychjevnc is a security thread, dont complain if your machine got taken over afterwards07:58
geirhakk0710: set a password07:58
lotuspsychjethey can bypass vnc passwords07:59
kk0710if they take it over I'll shut it down07:59
kk0710IM not going to use a feature because of some bad guys out there07:59
kk0710if some one REALLY wants my machine they can probably get it07:59
geirhaand don't enable the upnp forwarding07:59
lotuspsychjethats a dangerous way of thinking07:59
kk0710I ride motorcycle, it's how I work.  I am nto going to not use a feature becuase some one might turn my box into a spam bot.  Why does the software exist if not to be used?08:01
lotuspsychjekk0710: its common sense, never leave a remote software running 24/708:01
geirhaIt's within a LAN, isn't it?08:02
kk0710I am an aerospace engineer and work for one of the biggest defense contractors in the world and we leave remote software running 24/708:02

kk0710yes geirha08:02
lotuspsychjekk0710: then your business is surely hacked08:03
kk0710haha if you say so08:03
kk0710thanks for the warning08:04
geirhaRight, so no need to go paranoid08:04
somsipkk0710: so you're not their sysadmin and you don't really understand what we mean. Fair enough.08:04
=== marcos is now known as Guest39879
kk0710Not sure how I could be missing what you mean, you are trying to tell me no to do remote desktop, I understand your warning but willing to take the risk.08:06
lotuspsychjekk0710: i triggered you already the vnc over ssh way08:07
lotuspsychjekk0710: if you want a 'safer' way of remote working, try ssh + fail2ban08:07
kk0710i am trying to do desktop sharing...08:08
barnexjust tunnel the vnc through ssh08:09
geirhaIt's within a LAN ... it's not that big a deal.08:09
Smitherif it's within his lan then he doesn't need SSH at all, and provided he doesn't start port forwading to it from a router then he's pretty secure08:10
lotuspsychjehe told me earlier that his lan is connected to internet= security risk08:10
kk0710Smither, that is what I was thinking08:10
kk0710I am not forwarding anything to my desktop08:10
Smitherlotuspsychje: yes okay slightly but it's the other computers that are the risk, not the one he's trying to run remote desktop on. the correct thing to do would be to secure those better to prevent people getting onto his LAN in the first place08:12
=== freiform_ is now known as freiform
kk0710how is anyone going to get on my lan?  I am not sure how to connect with remmina btw08:14
kk0710oh think I got it08:16
geirhakk0710: set VNC as protocol, fill in the ip and password, connect08:16
Smitherkk0710: any computer that can connect to the internet is potentially a way in, those that have port forwading to them are a relatively easy route and can be used any time they're even just switched on and connected to your router.08:17
emilio189good morning guys08:17

kk0710geirha, I think I got it, I set a password, any other recommendations?08:21
geirhakk0710: should be good enough08:21
emilio189and anyway on windows it's working fine08:22
gogetaoh just power cycle the roughter then xhanging the os can confuse them08:22
gogetachanging08:22
gogetashould only need to do it once08:22
kk0710I would prefer ssh so I could do that from outside the network and setup downloads from outside but not sure how I would do piratebay and torrenting so this is easier08:22
emilio189I just found on internet that may be a sort of bug08:23
lotuspsychjekk0710: you could download a torrent with links2 from terminal08:23

barnexsecurity-wise, is there a password long enough to make open ssh without fail2ban and password auth an option?08:31
emilio189it should be well supported on linux08:32
gogetaemilio189, should be yep08:32
lotuspsychjebarnex: without fail2ban, your machine will get hammered anyways08:32
lotuspsychjebarnex: they use bruteforce on your password08:32
barnexlotuspsychje: yeah, but since it's the same password ubuntu uses for encryption08:33
barnexit's over 50 chars long anyway08:33
lotuspsychjebarnex: a long complex password is reccomended, but that doesnt mean they cant break it08:33
barnexI mean, it's a password that's supposed to withstand offline attacks08:34
barnexso it should be fine against online attacks, provided ssh isn't compromising it somehow?08:34
lotuspsychjebarnex: if you use ssh, i would install fail2ban also08:34
lotuspsychjebarnex: maybe the #openssh guys can get you more security tricks also?08:34
barnexI'm doing this as well, but I had this setup for a while now and I wonder if I should be concerned08:35
barnexas in, installing f2b now08:35
lotuspsychjebarnex: well if you install fail2ban, you will be able to see all the attempts daily08:35
barnexunless my accout is already compromised08:36
Smitherbarnex:  i agree with lotuspsychje, and definitely go for key pair auth if possible, makes it _so_ much more secure08:36
barnexI tried that, and I don't want to carry my private key with me everywhere08:37
emilio189gogeta, thank you for your help08:37

JustMozzyhi everyone. I have a lenovo T420s with an nvidia chipset. I keep on having problems with the driver I guess. currently my problem is that windows like skype or spotify do not open. the application starts without errors10:14
kostkonJustMozzy, what do you mean they don't open10:17
JustMozzykostkon: the software processes are running normally, but the window does not appear. for example I have the app icon of skype or spotify, and when I choose hide/show skype/spotify, nothing is happenening. Also no error messages are thrown when I run the applications from the terminal. what I noticed with spotify is that the login window appears for a few milliseconds and directly disappears (logging me in). it should then start th10:19

General-NemoI have a problem with firefox : http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=845719bugfirefox.png16:11
General-NemoIt is only appen on ubuntu, and  on chrome i do not have this problem16:11
General-NemoI don't know how to discribe this problem on google... I made a lot of search, i apply some solution, but it does not work...16:12
General-NemoI did this command, and it does not resolve my problem : mv .mozilla .mozilla.bak16:13
General-NemoI also saw that firefox work well if i use the ubuntu liveCD16:14
abdelPICI: some have # at the front with :added by software properites16:14
abdelshould i delete them too16:14
Piciabdel: if you want, it doesn't matter since they are already commented out.16:15
General-NemoSo do you know what i should do?16:15
abdelPICI av done it16:17
abdelso i should hit ctrl adn O16:18
TomyWorkPici some 3rd party repos might contain "trusty" :)16:18
Piciabdel: yep.  and run pastebinit /etc/apt/sources.list afterwards, I'll just take a look quick to make sure things look good before we proceed.16:18
abdelctrl X to exit right16:19
abdelbut its not exiting16:19
ki7mtctrl-x , then "Y" to save && exit16:19
abdelif i want to close it it says there is a process running16:19
abdeli hit Ctrl + X16:20
abdelthen then CTRL +Y but nothing happened16:20
TomyWorkGeneral-Nemo blame microsoft? :)16:20
ActionParsnipGeneral-Nemo: page rendering incorrectly...16:21
ki7mtNot ctrl + Y, jusy "y" after ctrl+x16:21
ki7mt.. just "y"16:21
General-NemoI have also this problem on Facebook, and a lot other site like mozilla16:21
abdelstill the same16:21
abdelctrl + x and then y16:22
abdelbut its still there16:22
abdelfirst i did CTRL + O16:22
General-NemoOn facebook, the title of the article is not there16:22
ki7mtabdel, Use a graphical editor if you don't know how to use Nano / Vi.16:22
reisioGeneral-Nemo: what version of firefox?16:22
TomyWorkGeneral-Nemo i wouldnt care much about either live.com or facebook. pick the most accessible site the problem occurs on16:23
abdeli have already removed what needs to be removed, its the saving thats giving issue16:23
ActionParsnipGeneral-Nemo: what is the output of:  cat /etc/issue16:23
abdelokay av figured it out16:23
General-Nemofirefox 37.0.216:23
abdelav saved it16:23
abdelat PICI: http://paste.ubuntu.com/11028317/16:24
reisioif you can find a site other than facebook or your email that does it, give a yell16:24
ActionParsnipGeneral-Nemo: its 1 line, so you can just paste it into the channel16:25
TomyWorkeverything from precise to vivid has 37.0.2. what's your version?16:25
TomyWorkyour ubuntu version16:25
abdelPICI u there16:25
General-Nemocat /etc/issue16:26
Piciabdel: you removed too many things.16:26
General-NemoUbuntu 14.04.2 LTS \n \l16:27
TomyWorkabdel just a friendly heads-up. the short form of "I have" is "I've", not "av"16:27
abdelyou said i should remover anything without #16:27
abdeli removed all the lines without #16:27
General-NemoIt is what the input say16:27
TomyWorkGeneral-Nemo i have that too and my firefox does garble pages in general. do you have a page i can access that is garbled for you?16:28
abdel@PICI: you said i should remove anything that doesnt have  comment, that was what i did sir16:28
TomyWorkdoesn't* dammit :)16:28
General-NemoTomyWork, i search16:28
TomyWorki'll have to disclaim that though. on a daily basis, i use chromium. i only use firefox for stuff that wont work in chromium16:29
ki7mtabdel, You need to remove the "#" sign from the lines that contain "trusty" in them.16:29
Piciabdel: one moment.. let me just give you what you should replace that file with...16:29
abdelokay PICI16:29
ki7mtabdel, Otherwise you do not have the main repo's enable16:29
General-NemoTomy Work, http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/? http://hpics.li/b102b3116:30
General-NemoTomyWork *16:30
TomyWorkGeneral-Nemo first link looks fine16:31
Piciabdel: https://gist.github.com/bnrubin/b8a55018370211f5ce7e16:31
TomyWorkGeneral-Nemo do you have any addons installed in firefox?16:31
TomyWorkGeneral-Nemo eww that 2nd page spawned a popup add16:31
TomyWorklike i said i dont use firefox on a daily basis so i dont have an adblocker ^^16:32
abdeldon't dammit16:32
TomyWorki'll dammit all i want, dammit16:32
abdelokay PICI let me replace it now16:33
General-NemoI don't have any extention, i have already delete all16:33
abdel@PICI: so i should replace everything with the 18 lines right16:33
Piciabdel: yes.16:33
General-Nemo*had16:33
Nexusususafternoon all.16:34
abdeli am going to delete everything in etc/apt/source.list16:34
Nexususus*sigh* why can't Ubuntu have a rolling version?  If it wasn't for that it'd be my fave distro.  I just don't get their update policy at all16:35
Dro__anyone have an idea how to add skype to the top notification bar ? (the blue message of Thundrbird & xchat.. etc)16:35
TomyWorkGeneral-Nemo hmm, purging your profile might help, if you dont mind losing all your history and bookmarks and such16:36
Piciabdel: Once you've done that, please run an apt-get update, apt-get dist-upgrade.  Then you should be able to install apache216:36
NexusususI mean, don't get me wrong, I see the point of an LTS, I wouldn't use one, but I do see the point.  But having to reinstall every 9 months or so is a bit of a pain.16:37
TomyWorkyou can first of all try logging in as another user and see if that user's firefox works on those pages16:37
abdelPICI how can i use a GUI16:37
TomyWorkGeneral-Nemo ^16:37
abdelcos the terminal is confusing me16:37
Piciabdel: I don't know where those things are in the gui... maybe someone else can provide that info.16:37
abdeli have source.list.save and source.list.save116:37
TomyWorkabdel Pici you can certainly use a gui editor. kdesu kwrite /etc/apt/sources.list16:37
General-NemoI had already do this16:37
NexusususWhat I don't get is once 15.04 was done and released they presumably started work on 15.10 right away, so it's a constant process anyway.  How is it different to the work required for a rolling release?16:38
TomyWorkor gksu maybe, but i dont know how that works precisely16:38
TomyWorkGeneral-Nemo and, does it work on another user?16:38
TomyWorkNexususus why cant they support each version until the next LTS is released?16:39
TomyWorkthat's what i find annoying16:39
TomyWorkand the update problems, yeah16:39
abdelam lost guys16:40
TomyWorkthe kubuntu 14.04 i am on right now was updated from 13.04 via 13.10.16:40
ki7mtTomyWork, abdel .. for the default GUI editor: gksudo /etc/apt/sources.list16:40
NexusususI don't find it particualrly annoying, I just don't really get way.  Sure do a tried and tested snapshot of sid and use that as an LTS, many people use them, I do get that16:41
Nexususus*why16:41
Piciabdel: I don't know the gui, sorry. I assumed (I suppose incorrectly) that if you were installing a LAMP server that you were command line proficient.16:41
TomyWorkNexususus and now my x server keeps crashing whenever i resume from hibernation16:41
General-NemoRe16:41
TomyWorkit even crashed once when it failed to hibernate due to me forgetting to shut down a VirtualBox VM16:42
lxirefhi.. I'm running ubuntu live test. No sudo(no idiea) and problem mounting. Help16:42
General-NemoSo its not work...16:42
TomyWorkGeneral-Nemo did you try using firefox on a different user account?16:42
NexusususTomyWork: you on the 15.0416:42
Nexususus?16:42
abdelPICI i just follow the online instructions16:42
TomyWorkNexususus 14.0416:42
Nexusususah, righto16:42
Nexusususlxiref: what's the issue?16:42
abdelki7mt: i should do: sudo gksudo /etc/apt/sources.list ro just gksudo /etc/apt/sources.list16:43
ki7mtabdel, sudo16:43
zykotick9^^ missing editor command!16:43
lxirefNexususus: no root and problem with mounting16:43
ki7mtabdel, esither way will work, if you dont add sudo, it will ask you for your PW16:43
NexusususTomyWork: don't get me wrong, I don't want an Arch situation where you spend more time configuring and fixing Linux than using it, but maybe an LMDE like distro, but with Ubuntu Goodness. update packs are the way forward.  1 a month?16:43
Nexusususlxiref: I know that lol, what's the actual issue16:44
philip_wat is the meaning of this System information disabled due to load higher than 4.016:44
TomyWorkki7mt sudo AND gksudo? what?16:44
lxirefpassword:ubuntu for root not work, I need this to mount sdhc from sd reader.. (Do I need a drivers?)16:44
lxirefThe NTFS partition is in an unsafe state. Please resume and shutdown Windows fully (no hibernation or fast restarting), or mount the volume read-only with the 'ro' mount option.16:44
abdeli have done it ki7mt16:44
abdelbut nothing happened16:45
lxirefit also told me to do something16:45
Nexusususlxiref: you don't need root to mount that, but it's saying it's got errors16:45
ki7mtabdel, Just as a side note, I would "highly" reading through the Ubuntu Manual, as it has allot of good information for those new to the command line: https://ubuntu-manual.org/16:45
Nexusususrun chkdisk in windows16:45
lxirefits new laptop lol16:45
ki7mtabdel, "highly recommend"16:45
lxirefare you telling me there is errors?16:45
daftykinslxiref: that is not how you use root.16:46
daftykinslxiref: first time using ubuntu i take it?16:46
abdelyes will do that but i need a quick fix now sir16:46
lxirefi think because there is password in windows16:46
lxirefi wrote 'su' and then ubuntu as password16:46
Nexusususit's saying the sdhc has the diry flag set, then yes16:46
Nexususus*dirty16:46
lxirefcan't understand16:46
daftykinslxiref: no that's wrong. run "sudo <program>" to run it as if as root16:46
TomyWorklxiref this may be an obvious question, but did you properly shut down your windows?16:46
NexusususTomyWork: it may be a Fast Boot issue16:47
lxirefim on ubuntu as main16:47
daftykinslxiref: but you can't mount that drive because likely you have Windows 8 and have not shutdown properly in it16:47
Nexusususthat "locks" the drives16:47
lxiref;_; im on live test16:47
lxirefwhat is it shutdown properly?16:47
lxirefmight be.. a lot restarts16:47
TomyWorklxiref the good old pre-win8 way16:47
lxiref:(16:47
lxirefso i need to buy new HDD?16:47
TomyWorkno?16:47
lxirefto format windows?16:48
NexusususI always turn Fast Boot off if I'm dual booting, gets annoying16:48
daftykinslxiref: wow where are you getting these crazy leaps in logic from? you just need to shutdown out of Windows 8 properly.16:48
abdelabdel@abdel-HP-Pavilion-dv6-Notebook-PC:~$ gksudo /etc/apt/sources.list16:48
abdelabdel@abdel-HP-Pavilion-dv6-Notebook-PC:~$16:48
daftykinsabdel: don't paste please16:48
lxirefbut i need to shutdown ubuntu16:48
lxirefthere is no logic on what u said16:48
Nexusususlxiref: eh? No, no need to buy anything, there's probably nothing wrong with it.  It's just got a flag set,16:48
Nexusususrun chkdsk in windoes16:48
lxirefand then live test?16:48
ngomeshello , my xubuntu 15.04 dont resume after suspend ... sometimes it shows "session is locked" message , but nothing happens , i need to turn off power and turn on again . any clue how to solve this ?16:49
daftykinslxiref: "shutdown ubuntu" - what are you talking about?16:49
Nexusususdaftykins: all yours lol16:49
lxirefchkdsk will fix it?16:49
daftykinsNexususus: thanks... :P16:49
lxirefthats what i want to know..16:49
Nexusususlxiref: chkdsk will clear the "dirty" flag yes16:49
daftykinslxiref: first off... *DO* you have Windows 8?16:50
TomyWorklxiref shut down the live cd, boot into windows, make it shut down cleanly through whatever means, then you can probably mount the ntfs partition in linux without it complaining16:50
Nexusususassuming it's not got an actual error16:50
lxirefyes16:50
lxirefthanks TomyWOrk16:50
TomyWorkbut16:50
lxirefbye for now16:50
TomyWorkstop16:50
Nexususushah16:50
TomyWorkdo you know how to shut it down cleanly?16:50
daftykinsyou should've given a link for the proper procedure16:50
akjCan someone tell me what enables/disable the autosuspending of USB devices?16:50
Nexususushe's gone TomyWork16:50
Nexusususlol16:50
TomyWorkwell, his problem16:50
daftykinshrmm this'll be handy for if that user comes back - http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/windows-8-proper-shutdown-without-disabling-hybrid-boot/16:51
=== JanC_ is now known as JanC
Nexusususanyway, yeah, as I was saying, my ideal distro would be basically LMDE but with Ubuntu patches16:51
ngomesakj, i know there's a config file somewhere where you can define modules to suspend ...16:51
daftykinsNexususus: this is a support only channel, the general chat is in #ubuntu-offtopic :)16:52
saymooreading up... windows 8 has no normal shutdown anymore?16:52
Nexusususdaftykins: my bad, sorry16:52
TomyWorkdaftykins that link text lacks a ™ :)16:52
philip_wat is the meaning of this System information disabled due to load higher than 4.016:52
daftykinsphilip_: you logged into a server over SSH too soon, so the MOTD (message of the day) did not execute as the system was already working hard.16:53
daftykinsthe MOTD typically checks for updates and gives you system stats16:53
binaryworkwhat is the audio device in ubuntu ?16:53
Nexusususbinarywork: ?16:54
binaryworkdev/audio?16:54
Nexusususyour soundcard?16:54
Nexusususoh, right16:54
TomyWorkmy motd on this one server i dont update lists the update stuff like 10 times16:54
abdelI THINK I WILL JUST UPGRADE MY UBUNTU TO 14.1016:54
daftykinsTomyWork: umm very confusing english there16:54
daftykinsabdel: that's nice but no need for caps16:54
TomyWorki'll refactor :)16:54
Nexususus /dev/snd I would have thought16:55
saymooabdel, OK16:55
headsetguyHello is it possible to create a bridge network while keeping my bonding setting intact and if so any pointers on how to achieve this?16:55
abdelbecause i cant seem to solve the issue16:55
TomyWorkdaftykins  I have this one server that i don't update. when i log into via ssh, it lists the update stuff like 10 times as part of the motd16:55
compdocTomyWork, whew16:55
daftykinsTomyWork: oh right, that's a weird bug. which version?16:55
TomyWork12.0416:56
daftykinsheadsetguy: bear in mind ##networking exists16:56
compdocI just upgraded a 12.04 server to 14.04. went pretty smoothly, mostly16:56
TomyWorki wont do that though :)16:57
Nexusususbinarywork: you could just do 'aplay -l'16:57
ki7mtabdel, I would not advise another upgrade, if you want 14.10 or 15.04, install it form the ISO. Upgrading more than 2 levels will certainly cause you problems.16:57
daftykinsabdel: what issue?16:57
Nexusususthat;ll list the devices16:57
binaryworkthanks16:57
abdelki7mt...my current ISO is 14.0416:57
Nexusususbinarywork: but it should be /dev/snd16:57
abdelso am upgrading to 14.1016:57
TomyWorkki7mt i updated 2 levels and i got problems :)16:58
daftykinsinstall, not ISO16:58
ki7mtabdel, did you install 14.04 from an ISO or upgrade to 14.04 ?16:58
philip_so sorry i missed the explanation wat is the meaning of this System information disabled due to load higher than 4.016:58
daftykinsphilip_: so scroll up16:58
TomyWorkwhich is why i said earlier that i cant understand their decision not to offer direct-to-LTS updates from every release16:58
abdeli usually upgrade16:58
TomyWork"...but when i don't, i make sure i'm on a really old non-lts release" :D16:59
daftykinspeople - there is WAY too much general chatter going on. Take it to #ubuntu-offtopic and leave this channel for questions and answers.16:59
daftykinsTomyWork: this means you.16:59
TomyWorksorry16:59
Spec-Chumwork finished, home time!16:59
Spec-ChumCya !16:59
abdelwhy i upgrade is because i dont want to lose my settings17:00
Nexusususoh lol, forgot I was logged on web chat twice17:00
ki7mtabdel, I would recommendation 14.04 LTS ISO install. There's little to be gained for the average user in 14.10 and 15.04, not to mention, they are limited support releases.17:00
NexusususSpec-Chum out (again)17:00
abdelfrom ISO, i will start all over again17:00
daftykinsabdel: and this is why it works reliably17:00

saymoolsftex, perhaps you should explain again, to all, what you want to accomplish exactly, what the current situation is... and what you've tried so far :)17:15

adamkhanuberstudent is based on ubuntu and they dont have an active irc channel :( urgently need help.... I installed uberstudent onto a partition, but then when i restarted, there was no grub... so i ran a live cd and ran boot-repair as per suggestions on ubuntu forums....but then although i got grub, i couldnt laod any OS17:15
daftykinsawktion: there is nothing wrong with the volume, Windows 8 does a hybrid shutdown which locks the volume from Linux17:15
lsftexsaymoo: I'm on live test ubuntu. And I'm trying to mount sdhc and give me some ntfs problem.17:16
daftykinsadamkhan: yes but does not permit it to be supported here, sorry.17:16

awktionlsftex: http://askubuntu.com/questions/145902/unable-to-mount-windows-ntfs-filesystem-due-to-hibernation17:18
ki7mtpwpul, running it will update the agent, then ensure it's enabled at startup, then re-boot, and try your install / upgrade a gain.17:19
awktionWorkaround for all versions of Windows:17:19
pwpulki7mt, ok I'll try17:19

TomyWorkworkaround for all versions of windows: uninstall windows? :D17:20
awktionthat's a solution not a workaround!17:20
daftykinsawktion: that's a bad idea.17:20
daftykinsalso it's Windows 8 so it's hybrid boot, not hibernation17:20
daftykins(though they are similar)17:20

daftykinsawktion: you are unfamiliar with Windows 8 i take it?17:23
lsftexforget it i give up17:24
awktionif somethingt's to be backed up to the windows drive then windows on would allow it, if it's something to be backed up from the windows drive windows off and read only should be fine17:24

pwpulki7mt, indeed!17:26

awktiondaftykins: ye, not a bad price to pay17:28
ki7mtpwpul, Make sure you do a restart afterwards, to force reloading the poli-kit agent.17:28

pwpulki7mt yes!17:36

saymoojayjo, /etc/hosts17:36

We think that it is a issue with the drive, but it is brand new. Is there any reason apart from drive failure which could cause these type of problems?17:42

daftykinslsfret: can you run the above command, then?17:42

awktionki7mt: not really issues, no18:03

lsfretPartition Table: msdos18:24
TomyWorklsfret that is the command you run to mount the sdhc?18:24
lsfretno18:24
lsfretparted -l and i pasted parts18:24
TomyWorki know, but i still want to know how you mount that sdhc18:24
lsfretHmm..18:25
lsfreti try mount -t drive folder and didn't work18:25
lsfretim not familiar with these commands18:25
TomyWorkmount -t drive folder just like that or are you missing "ntfs"?18:25
Poindexter_Is there an Ubuntu kernel or OS that is solely dedicated to professional studio recording? I have seen some but I am interested in someone who has actual experience with it.18:26
lsfretbut it is msdos18:26
TomyWorkthe partition table is msdos18:26
lsfretmy bad18:27
lsfretit says type: disk18:27
pbxPoindexter_, if you're looking for a special-purpose distribution i'd check distrowatch18:27

lsfretmaybe because it's not mounted i guess.18:29
lsfretautodetect is it even option?18:30
TomyWorktype just "mount" to see what is mounted18:30
daftykinsback again i see :)18:30
TomyWorkyeah, autodetect is the default if you dont specify the type18:30
saymoodaftykins, lol18:30
Poindexter_SayMoo is that an apt-get or an install? Drivers are important too.18:30
daftykinslsfret: you need to paste the partition lines18:30
TomyWorki.e. no "-t ntfs" or "-t fat32" or anything18:30
lsfretTomyWork: /dev/sda7 on /media/ubuntu/PBR_DRV type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,allow_other,default_permissions,blksize=4096) maybe this18:31

TomyWorkwell you could take a look at it with ls or something18:32
lsfretthere is nothing as recovery folder or distro18:32

lsfretgopar: how did you connect from comcast?18:33
TomyWorklsfret so inspect them all with ls to see what they are18:33
TomyWorki assume you know what's on your disks :)18:34
lsfretTomyWork: what do you mean, I'm sorry.18:34
saymooPoindexter_, all that is included in ubuntu studio is free18:34
TomyWorklsfret run "ls /media/ubuntu/PBR_DRV"18:34

TomyWorkproxies... we used to have those here too, back in the 90s18:36

daftykinsTomyWork: yes but it needs to be saved somewhere18:41
TomyWorkthe cloud? :)18:41
daftykinsdue to being in a live session18:41

TomyWorkPoindexter_ in a modern OS (i.e. not DOS), many processes can run at the same time. what you describe is actually the general case, not a special case (TSR)18:45
mahdi_jahi all18:45
daftykinslsfret: you can't just file copy an OS as backup18:45
Poindexter_TomyWork this is why we need to  use that command to see what is running in the background. In fact there is a free software called: "What's running" free and virus free and it shows everything running in Windows. Good tip. I am not sure if it is safe these days but it has always been a good free software.18:45

TomyWorkalso what EriC^^ said18:59
jpereiradaftykins,  the latest is 1.1.6, i would like to go to 1.1.818:59
jpereiralatest = stable18:59
daftykins!info libmtp trusty18:59
lsfretI don't think it's practice, there are some good at English.18:59
ubottuPackage libmtp does not exist in trusty18:59
jpereira!info libmtp trusty18:59

mahdi_jadaftykins, http://paste.ubuntu.com/11030383/19:00
lsfretBut I don't understand what I typed.19:00
TomyWorklsfret it correlates with practice though :)19:00
lsfretsudo dd bs=4M if=/dev/sdb | gzip > /home/your_username/image`date +%d%m%y`.gz19:00
lsfretThe '>' means output I believe19:00
jpereiradaftykins,  I would like to use the version 1.1.8 from 'wily' https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libmtp19:00
TomyWorkok i'll explain19:00
lsfretAnyone can explain in few sentence in their gold time?19:00
daftykinsmahdi_ja: your driver is way too old to work with your system, run "sudo apt-get purge bumblebee* " then go back into additional drivers and remove 304, put on 340+ instead19:00
lsfretThanks ^^19:01
daftykinsjpereira: you can't mix versions.19:01
TomyWorklsfret sudo means "run with super-user permissions the following command"19:01
lsfretI know sudo :D19:01
lsfretthi ubuntu is cool!!19:02
ki7mtlsfret, the > is a simple re-direction of gzip19:02
daftykinsjpereira: what makes you think you need it?19:02
lsfretanyone with kubuntu?19:02
=== niraj is now known as nirajranjan93
TomyWorklsfret "dd bs=4M if=/dev/sdb" means copy from /dev/sdb to no place in particular, with a block size of 4MB (i.e. copy in 4 MB chunks)19:02
TomyWorkno place in particular = the standard output of the process19:02
TomyWorknormally, that would end up in your terminal19:02
mahdi_jadaftykins, i run it but in additional driver i see "no additional driver available"19:02
lsfretthanks!19:02
EriC^^lsfret: what do you mean by fsdk problem?19:03
jpereiradaftykins,  because i have a Moto-G, and found many issues in the mtp wikie and otherwise saying that was fixed in >= 1.1.819:03
daftykinsmahdi_ja: ok run "sudo apt-get purge nvidia* " as well, then reboot to make sure all the bumblebee and nvidia packages are gone19:03
TomyWorklsfret  but there is "| gzip" attached to it, which captures everything dd read from the sdhc and compresses it19:03
daftykinsjpereira: what about guides that suggest udev related edits?19:03
Poindexter_Latest distro does not mean stable. It is BETA software. Stable is software that is accepted as the norm and BETA is a worked on version. Don't confuse it.19:03
TomyWorklsfret and then it puts the compressed result on *its* standard output19:03
lsfretEric^^: Welcome. fsdk.. As I understood... When I plugged raspberrypi to router it give 500(power not sure if it's mA) and it suppose to get more. Because the router usb spec port gives 500 mA(Again im not sure)..19:04
TomyWorkand then there's "> /home/your_username/image`date +%d%m%y`.gz", which tells your shell to redicrect that standard output to a file19:04
jpereiradaftykins,  over udev changes works fine, but the rhythmbox didn't works... because he uses the libmtp. got it?19:04
daftykinsjpereira: ok but what you want to do is still a bad idea - so like i said, try and find a PPA with a newer version provided in package form :)19:05
TomyWorklsfret wherein `date +%d%m%y` means "get the day, month and year and put it in the string19:05
lsfretthis ubuntu probably took ages to make it19:05
EriC^^lsfret: ok, so why are you copying the whole drive?19:06
TomyWorklsfret  so you'll get something like /home/your_username/image2015-05-08.gz"19:06
TomyWorklsfret and yes, the GNU project started in the 80s19:06
TomyWorkthe linux kernel started in 199119:06

ki7mtwoodennails, Is this a dualboot or native Linux installation ?21:43
katronixHi all, I have an Ubuntu server that I want to run https://github.com/wkhtmltopdf/wkhtmltopdf on, which unfortunately requires portions of X Windows. I know generally its not a good idea to install X on a server, however is there someway to see the minimum this app requires and install just that?21:45
woodennailski7mt, native21:47
Spec-Chumwoodennails, I do that, I've got Ubunut on my SSD then use my NTFS drives for storage and just link the folders21:47
Spec-ChumUbuntu21:47
Spec-ChumI can, for example, download something on windows and us it in Linux and vice versa21:48
Spec-Chum*use21:48
Spec-Chumwoodennails, welcome to the wonderful world of Linux :)21:48
Jordan_Ukatronix: "wkhtmltopdf and wkhtmltoimage are command line tools to render HTML into PDF and various image formats using the QT Webkit rendering engine. These run entirely "headless" and do not require a display or display service."21:48
ki7mtwoodennails, for me, the easiest way to access NTFS drives is via Samba, but if you have no plans on going back to Windows, you may want to back up the files, and convert them to EXT4 and create mount points for them, then add the drives to your FSTAB21:49
reisios/QT/Qt/21:49
katronixJordan_U, yes, however if you try to install it it does need the fonts xfonts-base and xfonts-75dpi21:49
Suek0hi21:50
reisiokatronix: and those draw in X?21:50
reisioSuek0: heyo21:50
Spec-Chumki7mt, I'm curious, why via samba?21:50
Jordan_Ukatronix: OK, so install those.21:50
Spec-Chumwhy not just use mount them ntfs-3g?21:50
ki7mtSpec-Chum, It's just quick and easy. But I also use SSHFS.21:51
Spec-Chumki7mt, oh, they're networked drives?21:51
ki7mtSpec-Chum, Some are, some are native.21:51
katronixJordan_U, instead of apt-get telling me everything having that has dependencies can I tell it to get everything needed to run whatever?21:52
ki7mtSpec-Chum, Like this: http://paste.ubuntu.com/11032536/21:52
katronixxfonts-base : Depends: xfonts-utils (>= 1:7.5+2)21:52
Spec-Chumfair enough :)21:53
Jordan_Ukatronix: apt-get can only resolve dependencies for things that you install via .deb packages, but if you "sudo apt-get install xfonts-base" it will install xfonts base and all of its dependencies and recommendations. If you want to just install xfont-base's dependencies but not recommendations then you can use "sudo apt-get install xfonts-base --no-recommends".21:59
katronixJordan_U, thanks22:00
Jordan_Ukatronix: You're welcome.22:00
katronixJordan_U, is it possible to ask dpkg where a file will be installed at?22:02
geirhatamps: Ah was that the goal? then this is another solution:  paste - - < file1 > file222:02
katronixJordan_U, nm I found it :)22:04
