[02:18] gunndawg_: kvm has worked well for me [02:19] I'll look into it. Would really like to get a VM up [02:20] virt-install is good for creating a VM, then you can use virsh to manage it [02:21] They're both part of libvirt, which is a wrapper library for kvm [02:30] so I installed KVM [02:30] and the GUI tool [02:31] setting up the VM I have selected the ISO and OS type (linux) but it wants a Version. I am installing and testing Arch. Not sure what version to select for Arch === aaron_ is now known as ahoneybun [03:45] gunndawg: I usually end up searching to find out which Linux Kernel version the distro is based on. [04:15] hi. I installed Kubuntu last night. Really liking the new look. I am having an issue with the fonts though. They are pretty fuzzy. I enabled anti-aliasing, is there anything else I can do? Specifically terminal looks janky [04:16] maybe I need to install some other ones? It doesn't seem to come with too many monospaced ones [04:23] KrakenSkulls: I use DejaVu Sans Mono for code, but also look at sub-pixel rendering under your font settings. If you pick the correct one it makes a big difference. It did for me anyway. [04:24] cjwelborn: thanks! I just tried playing around with subpixel and tried RGB. looks a lot better in firefox [04:25] KrakenSkulls: Also the 'Hinting Style' makes a big difference with 'fuzziness' or when they are too 'sharp'. [04:26] KrakenSkulls: I'm no expert, but the hinting style basically handles how fonts are smoothed out. You can make them bolder, sharper, blurrier, etc. [04:26] do you have to restart the app to see the difference? [04:26] KrakenSkulls: yes [04:27] cjwelborn: ahh no wonder! [04:32] cjwelborn: BitStream Vera Sans Mono is my favorite coding font. it's free online. gonna give it a whirl now [04:34] KrakenSkulls: cool. fonts are a touchy subject (just like editors) when it comes to programmers. :) As long as it's readable to you. === aaron_ is now known as ahoneybun [04:35] well it's gotta be monospaced, and there aren't very many of those. Terminal 9pt on Windows is also rad [04:36] probably some joker out there who uses Comic Sans though [04:42] i solved a weird sound issue by accident last night and i'll divulge the solution for free. i had event sounds but no youtube audio. i had to bring up the mixer, then right click at the top of the correct volume slider. a popup appears and you select "move to ", basically reassigning the output to the correct audio device [04:43] never would have found that weird hiden popup if i wasnt totally frustrated and just randomly clicking around [05:19] hi [06:51] hi, i have a question, but im not sure if its a bug. Since my update 14.10 -> 15.04 my audio is different. But i cant tell if its better or worse, its just different. Can someone give me some explanation or show me the right direction where to find some info about it? [06:54] baizon: click on the volume icon in the system tray, then click mixer [06:54] KrakenSkulls: yes, got it [06:54] baizon: from there go to settings, and Audio setup [06:55] KrakenSkulls: yes, also got it [06:55] baizon: i donno, between that and select master channel, you should be able to change what needs to be changed [06:55] ok, will try that, thanks [06:56] maybe it's playing in mono and not stereo [07:01] KrakenSkulls: indeed, it changed to "line-out" [07:01] thank you :) [07:06] baizon: awesome! "let me google it for you"? XD [18:18] metallic: the way I know about it is someone told it to me [18:18] nice is a way to set priorities if some process is interfering with another [18:19] kallecarl: by interfering what do you mean? I understand that it is a way to set the "urgency" of a process [18:19] is it not? [18:19] metallic: maybe you want your music player to have priority over everything else [18:19] but some indexing program is interfering [18:19] making music not play correctly [18:19] most users don't need this [18:20] particularly on Kubuntu [18:20] applications respect each other pretty much [18:20] Yeah, you shouldn't really need to use nice on a normal desktop computer [18:20] mmm... really? [18:20] metallic: it's the Truth [18:20] especially if you don't know what it does...better to not mess with it [18:21] The basic idea is that if you have two programs that can both use 100% of the CPU, you can use nice to control what percentage each program gets to use [18:21] That's what I was thinking to use "nice" for [18:21] what programs are using 100% CPU [18:21] So you could set one program to get 75% of the CPU and the other to get 25% of the CPU [18:22] kallecarl: sometimes I have several things working at the same time and I really would like to set priority on them [18:22] But a normal desktop computer shouldn't generally be running multiple programs that are that CPU-intensive [18:22] okay be careful though [18:23] metallic: what Dragnslcr said [18:23] I will, I learned a new thing :) [18:23] yes when you run Kubuntu you are automatically nice to the max [18:23] According to my shell the default nice value is 0 :/ [18:24] not -20 [18:24] Yup, 0 is considered normal [18:24] Dragnslcr: I meant that for me it is not set "to the maximum" [18:24] ) [18:25] everyone here is nice B^) [18:25] No, because everything set to -20 is no different than everything set to 0 [18:25] Everything would still have the same priority [18:26] metallic: what are you referring to with "I have several things working at the same time" and you want to set priority [18:27] what things? if there's a conflict, it's likely to call for other remedies than setting nice values [18:28] okay gotta go... metallic, you're in good hands with Dragnslcr [18:29] kallecarl: Sometimes I have several programs running which require machine resources and I clearly need some more than others. For instance, if I am GNUPLOT for viewing and performing operations on differential equations or such things, meanwhile I have things like the e-mail client, web browser and IRC client and running [18:29] I use* [18:30] The web browser is not so urgent to me, I may need to watch some documentation from time to time. The truth is that I don't think I am going to this this command much [18:31] going to need* [18:38] metallic: try it out...you might learn another new thing...also ksysguard (GUI) or top (CLI) will tell you CPU%, there may not be a need to set new nice levels [18:39] When the time comes for me to set priorities on my running programs I will see :) [18:39] metallic: in that case, you could set your plotting to a lower priority (e.g. renice it to 5), so that the other programs can more easily get the small amount of CPU time that they need [18:40] But I would only do it if the web browser and email client are noticably unresponsive [18:40] wait, so if I want GNUplot to have more resources I should diminish its niceness? :/ [18:40] No, but none of those other programs require much CPU time [18:40] My laptop is not a very potent machine hehe [18:40] And you typically want those kinds of programs to be more responsive [18:41] It doesn't really matter if an hour-long computation takes an extra 10 seconds to finish [18:42] mmm... Well, you sure know more than me [18:43] I have Konversation taking less than 1% of the CPU. Firefox is taking 16%, but Firefox isn't known for being overly efficient with resource usage [18:43] I don't have an email client running at the moment, but I doubt it will be using more than 1-2% most of the time [18:44] I guess I should see the amount of resources programs use when I face such situations, as you said [18:45] Thanks to both of you :) Dragnslcr kallecarl, I keep on reading kubuntu's help [18:46] http://www.tldp.org/LDP/intro-linux/html/sect_04_03.html#sect_04_03_05_01 has a brief description [18:50] Well, I got the idea, "better do not touch" XD [18:54] hi everybody [19:01] Hi [19:08] Do I have to build KDE SC on my system if I am already running Kubuntu ,to do any development activities?
