collizionOdd. I've got a 14.04.2 server (fresh install) where resolvconf isn't creating any entries in /etc/resolv.conf. The symlink exists, and it will place the "this file gets clobbered by resolvconf" header in it every time, but it won't insert the nameservers specified in /etc/network/interfaces.14:30
Patrickdk well, then your /etc/network/interfaces isn't set right14:50
collizionPatrickdk: Please enlighten me as to how you came to that conclusion, considering the ubuntu installer configured it itself, and I haven't touched those lines.14:51
Patrickdkwhat does any of that have to do with it?14:53
collizionPatrickdk: ... The Ubuntu installer configured the contents of /etc/network/interfaces, and one would assume the installer knows how to do it properly. Thus your statement that it isn't set right seems a bit presumptuous.14:53
Patrickdkheh?14:53
Patrickdkthere are only two options14:54
Patrickdkresolvconf is broken14:54
Patrickdkor /etc/network/interfaces is not right14:54
Patrickdkboth resolvconf and installer can have bugs14:54
Patrickdkand someone has to tell the installer what to put into it14:54
Patrickdkbe it dhcp or static config14:54
collizionPatrickdk: Then it would seem that resolvconf isn't functioning properly in this instance.14:54
Patrickdkheh? I can't claim that, I cannot see your interfaces file14:55
collizionPatrickdk: You haven't asked to see it, either. You're making assumptions.14:55
Patrickdkyes, due to the lack of supplied infomation14:55
Patrickdkwhat did you want me to say? nothing?14:55
Patrickdkand let you not have any help at all?14:55
Patrickdkbased on the information supplied, your /etc/network/interfaces is probably not right14:56
collizionPatrickdk: Or... ya know... Ask. That's why there's a question mark on your keyboard. "Hey, I'd like to help. Can I see your interfaces file?"14:56
Patrickdkna, no point, you told me twice it's perfect14:56
Patrickdkand can't be wrong14:56
Patrickdkand you never asked for help14:57
collizionPatrickdk: I think you need to get some sleep or take a vacation or something.14:57
Patrickdkso why would I respond assuming you wanted that14:57
collizionPatrickdk: if you're curious, the answer seems to be that if there is a secondary IP address specified for the interface in /etc/network/interfaces, resolvconf seems to latch on to that stanza for configuration rather than the previous. Because there isn't any DNS information specified for the secondary entry, it sets an empty /etc/resolv.conf file.15:04
collizionDoes Ubuntu prefer a specific method for adding a secondary IP address other than the iproute2 method of adding a second "iface eth0 inet static" stanza with just an address?15:06
Patrickdkthat is not valid15:08
collizionPatrickdk: It works just fine in terms of setting the addresses, but resolvconf doesn't like it.15:09
collizionManual /etc/resolv.conf it is.15:09
Patrickdkya, cause the parser is forgiving, but resolvconf isn't as much15:09
Patrickdkiface eth1:7020 inet static15:10
collizionPatrickdk: I believe that interface aliases are deprecated.15:13
Patrickdklikely15:14
Patrickdkbut then the arp command has been deprecated for >10years15:14
Patrickdkand ip neigh has been deprecated for 5years15:14
Patrickdkso there is no non-deprecated to do proxyarp or arp stuff anymore in linux15:14
collizionPatrickdk: iproute2 is fine with multiple stanzas with the same interface name, treats them as one. resolvconf just doesn't like it all. I think the present alternative is to add up/down lines to the interface stanza so that ip addr adds/deletes the secondary IP on ifup/ifdown.15:15
collizionPatrickdk: Which did solve the issue.15:15
Patrickdkyes, you can do ip addr add15:15
Patrickdkthat works15:15
Patrickdkbut if you atleast use depreciated ifconfig, like lots of tools still use15:15
Patrickdkyou will never see it15:15
Patrickdkunless you use, label eth0:xxxx15:16
Patrickdkand then your back to aliases15:16
collizionPatrickdk: It's fixed/working now without using an alias.15:16
Patrickdkbut then, ifconfig is depresiated too15:16
