VFDPrimhow does one remove conky01:04
daftykinsdpkg -l | grep conky01:04
daftykinsthen remove the package that matches01:05
daftykinsGeneral-Nemo: yes01:05
VFDPrimand how does one remove it lol sorry im slow when it comes to terminal comands01:06
daftykinsmight want to put in some bedtime reading on the topic ;)01:07
daftykinssudo apt-get remove <package>01:07
rflemingVFDPrim, remove conky as in stop it, uninstall it, or delete the configuration?01:07
VFDPrimuninstall01:07
rflemingor remove it from running on startup?01:07
rflemingsudo apt-get purge conky01:07
daftykinspurge is overkill, that'll remove configs too01:08
daftykins(best to be aware of the difference)01:08
VFDPrimrfleming thank you very much sr01:08
VFDPrimbe right back going to restart comp01:08
daftykins¬_¬01:09
rflemingThanks Bill.01:09
daftykinswho is Bill?01:10
rflemingGates01:10
daftykinswhat makes that childish comment relevant?01:10
rflemingevery time you install or uninstall a piece of software, you are required to reboot01:10
daftykinscould've been for other reasons01:10
rfleming*sighs*01:10
daftykinsjust giving that user the benefit of the doubt :)01:11
rflemingwhy not.01:12
VFDPrimcrap that didnt work i still have a stupid black info box on my screen01:13
rflemingin regards to your comment on remove vs purge... in the case of conky, purge is better as it gets rid of all the ancillary libraries that conky installs, but does not delete ~/.conkyrc01:14
rflemingVFDPrim, did you install anything other than conky?01:14
VFDPrimrfleming01:14
VFDPrimnope just conky01:15
* rfleming isn't an expert on black boxes01:15
VFDPrimand ok so if i didnt uninstall it how do i do that01:15
rflemingIf you have a black box, then you didn't remove conky01:15
VFDPrimcorrect01:15
rflemingfrom a terminal (CTRL-ALT-T), what is the output of    which conky01:16
VFDPrimi was trying to get one of there better looking ones but it did not work so now i want to rid my computer of it all together01:16
OerHeksstop conky first, before uninstalling.01:16
VFDPrimok i need step by step her please im very novice when it comes to the terminal01:17
rflemingVFDPrim, killall conky01:17
rfleming(from a terminal)01:17
VFDPrimbash: kill: all: arguments must be process or job IDs01:17
VFDPrimbash: kill: conky: arguments must be process or job IDs01:17
rflemingone word.  killall01:17
VFDPrimoh ok01:18
VFDPrimverry good that is done whats next :)01:18
rflemingyou want to permanently remove it?01:18
VFDPrimyes01:18
rflemingsudo apt-get -y purge conky01:18
VFDPrim'conky' is not installed, so not removed01:19
VFDPrimif that was true why did it start up after a restart...?01:19
rflemingdo you still have the black box on your desktop?01:20
OerHeksThis is oke, you uninstalled conky, then stopped the service.01:20
VFDPrimThe following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:01:20
VFDPrim  alien at debugedit lib32z1 librpmbuild3 librpmsign1 lsb-core lsb-security m401:20
VFDPrim  ncurses-term pax rpm01:20
VFDPrimUse 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.01:20
VFDPrimno black box is gon01:20
OerHeksthis is basic for linux, stop a service before uninstalling, else the service will run untill you reboot01:20
rflemingThen you're done01:20
VFDPrimohh ok so it did not know not to stop it after restart even though it did not exist?01:20
rflemingyou can run sudo apt-get autoremove if you wish01:20
rflemingVFDPrim, Congrats!  You did it!!01:21

eric2good evening all. I have having a really strange issue where I can only get Ubuntu to boot when i force a bad shutdown and select ubunto from the Grub screen. does anyone know why this might be? Ubuntu 15.0401:35
SVCR3D-SHVD0WSthankyou!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!01:35

OerHeksSVCR3D-SHVD0WS have fun01:35
eric2does anyone have any insight. This is the very first time I have even heard of this issue happening01:37
rflemingeric2, what happens?01:39
rflemingwhy are you forcing a shutdown?01:39
rfleming(and what do you mean by forcing a shut down?  Turning off the computer?)01:39
eric2If I boot normal from a nice normal shutdown Ubuntu fails to start and the system shuts down. If i force it to enter grub I can get a good boot01:39
eric2Yes, a bad shut down. Power button reset01:40
rflemingahh01:40
rflemingwhat error comes on screen when it boots up nicely (and fails?)01:41
eric2Nothing, straight from Bios splash to nothing and then power off01:41
rflemingdo you happen to have other disks plugged into the machine?01:42
eric2No01:42
rflemingmaybe a usb hard drive, a flash drive or an ssd?01:42
eric2nope nothing01:42
rflemingso it finishes the bios splash then turns off?01:43
eric2yes, nothing comes on screen, but something is happening. If I hold the powerbutton as the bios screen disappears and turn it back on ill be booted in to grub01:44

eric2it might, i dont know why its there.01:54
Kioneric2:  I guess if I break something I will fix it with apt-get install asterisk01:55
eric2wouldn't life be grand if it ends up being just that simple01:55

jishjishhi all, I am on windows 7 64 bit at the moment, and I am trying to test out the latest ubuntu 64 bit. I've installed virtualbox but when I select linux, it only let's me choose from 32 bit OS's what have I done wrong?03:45
cfhowlettjishjish, nothing wrong.  test away in 32 bit03:45
jishjishcfhowlett: will that work, I thought you had to select the correct architecture so it would install the right supporting drivers and work.03:46
cfhowlettjishjish, your cpu doesn't support 4 bit virtualization.  doesn't mean it can't run 64 bit native03:46
cfhowlettjishjish, remember: you are testing a virtual device.   VIRTUAL.03:46
jishjishso are you saying ANY given CPU can potentially support A) installing a 64bit OS natively, B) installing a 64 OS virtually, or C (Both physically and Virtually)?03:47
ryan_46jishjish, Not sure but I think something has to be enabled in bios to allow 64 bit. Don't know how to myself.03:47
cfhowlettjishjish, forgive my lack of clarity in advance.  the virtual machine IS NOT the same as your actual, physical hardware.  it is limited by the capabilities of your cpu and cpu settings.03:48
cfhowlettjishjish, beyond that, if your goal is to test ubuntu, why not make an ubuntu USB, boot your machine from said USB and test03:49
cfhowlettjishjish, also: option C from your quiz ...03:50

songjianMy leader told me I can upgrade 13.10 to 14.04 LTS if I get official confirm that 13.10 is no longer supported. I want to know to why I can still get updated for 13.10 from July, 2014 to May, 2015. But about one week ago, this situation(can not update) occurs, no matter which source. I personaly think Ubuntu decide to quit support on source server side. Is this ture ?14:28
Silenced_v2MonkeyDust: Now in stock kernel14:30
EriC^^songjian: as far as i know, 13.10 has been unsupported since july 201414:30
EriC^^songjian: you can still get packages for it from old-releases.ubuntu.com , but they won't be new and might have security vulnerabilities14:32
songjianThanks, Eric, I will tell my leader to upgrade to Ubuntu 14.04.14:32
EriC^^songjian: good choice ;)14:33

Silenced_v2MonkeyDust: I love experimenting with the real machine ;) anyways thanks14:40

momkenHello14:42
momkenI want to add this repo from suse to my sources.list : https://software.opensuse.org/download/package?project=isv:ownCloud:desktop&package=owncloud-client14:42
momkenBut after doing all steps for xubuntu14.04, It says it can't get the key14:43
momkenWhat should I do?14:43
PuriiCan someone help me with one thing? When I try to do software updates it said that my /boot partition is full. I wen't to boot and with sudo nautilus and deleted old kernel versions. Still it says that it is full and I can't update.14:46
PuriiWould a reboot possibly help?14:46
PuriiOr can I somehow increase my boot partitions size?14:47
PuriiWhen I deleted it said that "Move to trash" but when I go to trash it shows that there is nothing in it14:49
momkenmomken: I solved it14:50
auronandacePurii: you shouldn't delete stuff from the /boot partition, you should uninstall the older kernels from apt14:50
Puriiauronandace: well, what can  I do now? I'm pretty new with linux14:51

EriC^^Purii: don't use sudo nautilus, use gksu nautilus, you'll mess up permissions and stuff with sudo + gui apps14:55
PuriiShould I move them back to where they were and uninstall them from synaptic package manager?14:55
PuriiEriC^^: how do I do this?14:56
EriC^^Purii: if you can still run apt yeah, if it complains you can remove the initrd of the old kernels to have enough free to space to remove them with apt14:56
EriC^^Purii: type ls /root/.local/share/trash/files14:57
EriC^^and see if they're there14:57

OrthopeduxMy problem is that my wifi card (WM3945ABG) find wifi networks, but can't connect to them19:16
AndyDavisActionParsnip,  IMHO you shove enough software down end users they are going to use it.  Example IE19:16
ActionParsnipAndyDavis: IE isn't as bad as people say. It just seems cool to dislike it19:17
OrthopeduxI downloaded some drivers in a .tgz file, but don't know what to do with19:17
Bashing-omOrthopedux: Regrets, but my experience does not extend to WIFI issues .19:17
ActionParsnipOrthopedux: are there lots of networks on the same channel?19:17
OrthopeduxWell, if you can tell me how to "install" a .ucode file, it could help me :)19:18

jxierxMaybe but don't wanna say(what's can go wrong) ;_; ?19:22
SchrodingersScatjxierx: dual boots normally go fine for me, if you have a good grasp of how partitions work then you should be at least able to not overwrite things, but backups will ensure you won't be in tears later.19:22

daftykinsdick_: nothing of what you've said hugely makes sense. an OS does not fix a BIOS, other than to either update it or perform a CMOS reset if it's behaving oddly.22:56
daftykins(neither of which necessarily happen from the OS)22:56
dick_I did the cmos thing though. and it's not that it's 'dead'. What happens is, I go to turn it back on, and nothing.. then I shut it off, turn it back on, then it goes to post, but doesn't go further.. then I try again, and sometimes I'll find the damn hard drive and boot22:56
