ubottuxubuntu: Canonical's partner repositories provide a location for software vendors to publish applications. The repo itself can be added by running this in a !terminal: « sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ $(lsb_release -sc) partner" »08:42

bazhang!sbackup14:40
ubottusbackup is a tool to create complete and/or incremental backups (which can be scheduled to be automatic, and can be done over a network). It is available in !Universe14:40
heronimusi'm reseaching both a NAS option and also a mirrored usb disk14:41
bazhangalternately there is rsync14:41
ObrienDaversync works great for file backup. only sends what has changed after initial backup14:42

OverrRydehello everyone, can someone tell me if there is a way to confirm if i have xubuntu install vs normal ubuntu?19:29
mrkrampsOverrRyde, right after installation or in general?19:30
OverrRydein general, im trying to figure something out but now i cant remember if i had install xubuntu or not!19:30
OverrRydethe box is all setup and running for over 6 monthsnow19:30
holsteinsee if you are using xfce or not19:31
OverrRydei am,19:31
holstein"normal" ubuntu doesnt ship xfce..19:31
OverrRydebut i cant remember if xfce would have been install over regular ubuntu, or is that not possible?19:31
mrkrampsit is possible19:31
holsteinyes.. xubuntu *is* ubuntu19:31
mrkrampsyou may check if unity is still installed19:32
OverrRydegot, will check. i understand *buntu is still ubuntu, but trying to get support in the right places, or would it not matter any *buntu would still be the same at its core?19:33
mrkrampsOverrRyde, depends on your question19:33
holsteinOverrRyde: try just asking, and a volunteer will either assist, or help you get where you need to be19:34
OverrRydethanks! well in essence, the box has been running and used as home server + lamp, all running fine, however, i noticed that the install has all regular desktop apps installed, such as games, gui tools, libreoffice, etc19:36
holstein!server19:36
ubottuUbuntu Server Edition is a release of Ubuntu designed especially for server environments, including a server specific !kernel and no !GUI. The install CD contains many server applications. Current !LTS version is !Trusty (Trusty Tahr 14.04) - More info: http://www.ubuntu.com/products/whatisubuntu/serveredition - Guide: https://help.ubuntu.com/14.04/serverguide - Support in #ubuntu-server19:36
OverrRydei want to strip it down to its basics without having to lose/move/reinstall lamp and other applications19:36
holsteincould be, the server channel is the most appropriate, but, you simply just need to decide what you need/want, and remove what you want19:36
holsteinbut, you should have a backup plan.. you should plan for that hard drive *never* working again, which will happen, then, you'll be prepared to do whatever you need to do there19:37
holsteinmaybe that is, backing up, and reinstalling minimal, or server iso..19:37
holstein!mini19:37
ubottuThe Minimal CD image is very small in size, and it downloads most packages from the Internet during installation, allowing you to select only those you want.  The installer is text based (rather than graphical as used on the Desktop DVD). See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD19:37
holsteinmaybe its leaving it "as-is"", with the GUI and other tools in place, if thats what you need.. you may be assuming you would gain some sort of resource increase to the LAMP stack that may not be realistic19:38
OverrRydeyes that is exactly it, trying to free up ressources for what the box is primaraly being used for19:39
holsteinyou wont, for example, increase the bandwidth available to the box by removing xfce.. it could be, the GUI is *not* the bottle neck.. no doubt, you can remove it, but, it may just not be necessary, or do what you expect19:39
mrkrampsthe desktop environment is only started after you log in graphically19:39
mrkrampsso there's no loss in memory19:39
holsteinthat to ^.. its not likely a bunch of things are running in the background, as it seems you are assuming19:40
OverrRydeah ok i didnt know this, gui is never used unless i vnc into it to play around19:40
holsteinif you remove the GUI you will not be able to "play around" like that.. you will only have ssh access.. headless terminal access, if you set it up that way.. which is fine, but, you may want/need the GUI19:41
mrkrampsalthough you may check for example if zeitgeist ist running19:41
OverrRydeok, i understand! thanks, i was then just thinking that by removing unnecessary applications it would help, but i am for sure keeping xfce around so i can still login!19:44
