GunnarHjseb128: Have a minute for bug #1443178?08:36
ubot5bug 1443178 in accountsservice (Ubuntu) "Accounts Service always relies on language fallback if never set by the user" [Medium,In progress] https://launchpad.net/bugs/144317808:36
seb128GunnarHj, sure, though I don't understand the issue enough to have an opinion, as stated on the bug08:37
seb128I think all those locale things are overcomplicated and I'm not sure to understand why that needs to be08:37
seb128I dislike having something doing work/writing config during normal login if you don't change anything08:37
GunnarHjseb128: The reason for it is a long story, and is to a large extent due to the design of language-selector, which provides a language priority list.08:39
didrocksre seb12808:39
seb128didrocks, re, didn't go for exercice yet? the ~20min are over ;-)08:39
didrocksseb128: yeah… not yet08:40
GunnarHjseb128: But saving about 400 bites of data will allow for a significant performance improvement in this case.08:40
GunnarHjseb128: I do have the right to upload... Should I do so, and let's see if there is any reactions?08:41
seb128GunnarHj, let me try to understand the issue, do you have a comment/post to summarize it?08:44
larsuGunnarHj: why does a-s get the language when writing the volume?08:44
larsuGunnarHj: also, why does i-sound write the volume on startup?08:45
GunnarHjseb128: I added a couple of comments after your latest.08:45
GunnarHjlarsu: a-s fetch all stored user data at startup.08:46
larsuGunnarHj: and it calculates the language then as well?08:46
GunnarHjlarsu: Yes, and the need to calculate is over and over is the problem.08:47
GunnarHjs/is/it/08:47
larsuGunnarHj: can't it cache the value?08:48
larsuGunnarHj: is there an upstream bug as well?08:48
GunnarHjlarsu: That's my idea. :)08:48
GunnarHjlarsu: No upstream; this is an Ubuntu specific patch.08:48
GunnarHjlarsu: Or did you mean cache in memory?08:49
larsuGunnarHj: in memory. Writing config on startup seems like a bad idea08:49
GunnarHjlarsu: Possibly. But then you have setups with hundreds of users. See e.g. bug #1350393.08:51
ubot5bug 1350393 in accountsservice (Ubuntu) "Recent accountsservice update causes login window to hang" [Undecided,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/135039308:51
GunnarHjlarsu: It currently calculates the value for each user at each startup.08:52
larsuGunnarHj: why?08:52
larsuGunnarHj: got a meeting now, bbiab and can have a more detailed look08:52
GunnarHjlarsu: Ok. (There is a reason.)08:53
GunnarHjseb128: Caching in memory, which larsu suggested, might be a better approach.08:58
seb128GunnarHj, well, that wouldn't solve the slow start/login though?09:04
GunnarHjseb128: No, it wouldn't.09:05
seb128why is there computation needed?09:05
seb128shouldn't the value comes from the environment?09:05
seb128which is /etc/environment or the .pam_environment config?09:06
GunnarHjseb128: Once the user value is saved, there is no need to do any computation. That's the reason for my suggestion. With the proposal, the language and formats data would actually be saved right at the creation of a new user.09:07
=== vrruiz_ is now known as rvr
seb128GunnarHj, what happens there if the user never changed his config/is using the system default and the system default change09:08
seb128would the user config be updated as well?09:08
seb128like if the sysadmin edit /etc/environment09:08
GunnarHjseb128: No, then the user env would stay at the old value. Which I personally think is right.09:09
seb128why is it?09:09
seb128if the user never configured his account?09:09
seb128like you are in a french school, the admin screwed the config, some users log in and tell him, if fixes it09:09
GunnarHjseb128: Well, if you consider /etc/default/locale as the system default for new users only.09:10
seb128then the users are stucked on the buggy value they never selected/wanted?09:10
seb128I don't think so09:10
seb128I consider the system config to be what the user gets, until he decides to set a value09:10
seb128so if you never change the config you would keep getting the default09:10
GunnarHjseb128: If you have a multiuser system where the users are find with the settings, and the admin decides to change the system default for future users... What's then? ;)09:12
seb128well, they go configure/set it to what they like09:12
seb128I dislike the idea to write a configuration for something users didn't configure09:13
seb128that bit us back in the past several times09:13
seb128it's confusing for users, an issue for update/migration, and often inefficient because it means work happen when the user doesn't ask for it09:14
GunnarHjseb128: Ok... Possibly caching in memory would be the solution after all. Then the value would only need to be calculated once per startup, not for each user.09:15
seb128why is there something to "calculate"?09:17
seb128the env is set through /etc/environment sourcing or pam_environment09:17
seb128there should be no logic/maths to do09:17
GunnarHjseb128: For instance since we need a valid language code, which may need to be derived from som locale name...09:19
larsuGunnarHj: what's the reason?09:20
GunnarHjlarsu, seb128: The GUIs for setting language are working with lists of language codes, and current value needs to match.09:22
GunnarHjlarsu, seb128: But why don't you guys let me get back to the drawing board and fix some caching.09:23
larsuGunnarHj: you said there's a reason that language is "calculated" for each user on on startup09:24
seb128GunnarHj, sure, feel free to do that, I was just trying to understand the situation to help discussing the solution09:24
GunnarHjseb128: Your questions and objections were valuabe. :)09:25
seb128thanks :-)09:25
GunnarHjlarsu: No, if we cache, is would only need to be calculated once per startup, not for each user.09:25

seb128Laney, wfm in wily desktop i386, what's the issue for you?13:06
Laneyseb128: Seems trunk depends on a newer version of maliit's gschema than ubuntu has13:20
Laney& no versioned dep13:20
seb128kenvandine, keeeennnnn13:20
Laneyno big deal, I filed a bug13:21
seb128http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~system-settings-touch/ubuntu-system-settings/trunk/revision/139613:21
seb128that shouldn't happen13:21
Laneythought it was in ubuntu first which would be bad but it's not13:21
seb128right, still it means we can't land trunk in wily13:21
Laneyya13:22
seb128or worst, we could without noticing the issue because the depends is wrong13:22
seb128I pinged people about that on -touch13:24
Laneythanks13:25
kenvandineseb128, ??13:26
seb128kenvandine, http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~system-settings-touch/ubuntu-system-settings/trunk/revision/139613:26
kenvandinemissing depends?13:26
seb128kenvandine, that depends on a new ubuntu-keyboard gsettings key but doesn't add the corresponding depends13:26
seb128kenvandine, or that version newer landed in Ubuntu proper13:26
seb128so it makes u-s-s trunk sigabrt on vivid/wily13:26
kenvandineit landed at the same time13:27
seb128in some overlay ppa I guess13:27
kenvandineneither in vivid13:27
kenvandineyeah13:27
kenvandinethe overlay ppa13:27
seb128right13:27
kenvandineshould have had the depends13:27
seb128which makes trunk not run on vivid/wily13:27
kenvandinearen't we going to sync from the overlay ppa not vivid?13:27
kenvandinei thought that was the plan13:27
kenvandinestill we should have had the depends13:27
kenvandineseb128, had did that land in wily?  it should have never been in vivid13:30
seb128kenvandine, what is "that"?13:30
seb128kenvandine, usecase is some of us trying to hack on settings on our wily desktop13:31
seb128we don't have the overlay ppa there13:31
kenvandineoh i see :)13:31
kenvandinei thought settings with this had made it to wily13:31
seb128no, it's in trunk though13:31
kenvandineyeah13:31
seb128which blocks us to do any wily landing though13:31
kenvandinetrunk matches the overlay ppa, not wily or vivid13:31
kenvandinewhich i know sucks13:31
kenvandineseb128, do you know when those packages will be synced to wily?13:32
seb128no idea13:32
LaneyJFDI13:32
seb128are they going to be automatically?13:32
* Laney shoots from the hip13:32
Laneypow pow pow13:32
seb128I think people just need to request a landing13:32
kenvandineit was the plan13:32
kenvandineto sync those from the ppa instead of vivid13:32
kenvandineat least that's what i heard somewhere :)13:33
kenvandinesure we can do it manually13:33
kenvandinebut i think there was a plan to sync all the packages13:33
kenvandinelike we would for vivid13:33
LaneyDon't think people care much about wily atm13:36
Laneycopy-package --from=~ci-train-ppa-service/ubuntu/stable-phone-overlay --to=ubuntu --from-suite=vivid --to-suite=wily-proposed -b ubuntu-keyboard13:36
nessitatseliot, hello again! So, I purged all nvidia related packages in my vivid installation, and rebooted. After 2 reboots (first ended up in a black screen), I got the nice splash screen. I entered the crypt passphrase, and the splash screen hanged for about 40 seconds, I went to the text terminal 1 (ALT + F1), then to the 2 text terminal. Screen was black with a blinking cursor, which dissapeared and re-appeared about 5 times, similar to an X resta13:42
GunnarHjseb128: still there?14:36
seb128GunnarHj, yes, I saw your upload, good work, thanks :-)14:36
GunnarHjseb128: It ended up to a very small adjustment, but important, I think.14:36
seb128yeah, from the description that makes sense to me14:36
GunnarHjseb128: To make it land in the phone, should it be backported to vivid?14:37
seb128GunnarHj, yeah, maybe a SRU would work14:37
seb128not sure if they use those14:38
seb128kenvandine, ^ do you know?14:38
kenvandinejust propose a branch to trunk14:38
kenvandineit'll land in the overlay ppa14:38
kenvandinenot SRU14:38
seb128kenvandine, we are speaking about accountsservices and the fix has been uploaded to wily14:39
kenvandineoh, i was thinking settings :)14:39
kenvandineto get it on the phone we need to land it in the overlay ppa14:39
kenvandineor i guess an SRU14:39

ScriptMonkey00Are you guys here to describe ubuntu Desktop (as in environments) or desktop as in desktop vs laptop? :)  Sorry if that's a dumb question, but it would rule out a bunch of other even dumber ones :)15:17
ScriptMonkey00discuss I mean, not describe :)15:17
willcookeScriptMonkey00, not sure I follow you exactly, but... this channel is mainly used by people who develop various desktop environments in/on Ubuntu15:19
willcookeso technical discussions about the environment and all its components15:19
willcookeGenerally it's not a "how do I do XYZ with Ubuntu" channel15:20
qenghoScriptMonkey00: if it's an idea or problem that involves changing an existing project, this is the place. We try not to create many "upstream" projects here.15:20
ScriptMonkey00That's actually fine.. I was looking to ask someone knowledgeable about where I could go to research system requirements for different desktops. I'm getting a chromebook and putting Ubuntu on it.. but I'm reading that some can run fine while others get laggy or slow...15:21
ScriptMonkey00some environments I mean15:21
ScriptMonkey00does that question make sense? (I'm most experienced as a CLI user, this is my first serious forray into an environment like this)15:22
* didrocks waevs good evening and good night15:22

willcookeTHAT15:39
willcookeWAS15:39
willcookeAWESOME15:39
seb128lol15:39
* larsu has a feeling willcooke liked it. notsurethough15:39
seb128we should still have a "other topics & question" imho15:39
seb128but otherwise +115:40
seb128feel better to not keep waiting in the middle15:40
willcookegood plan15:40
desrtwe could try the async-in-parallel approach15:40
willcookeoki, let's do a Any Other Business now...15:40
desrtask everyone at the same time15:40
willcookeanyone got anything?15:40
desrtand let everyone flood back together :)15:40
* seb128 doesn't15:40
larsuso... lots of timezone panel problems apparently15:40
desrtlarsu: search+gvfs+soap issues still?15:41
seb128yeah, not specific to the panel15:41
larsuI think we should make this whole situation a bit better...15:41
seb128inconsistent experience/stack used in different codebases as well15:41
larsudesrt: no, I fixed that by porting to libsoup15:41
seb128yeah, +115:41
larsudesrt: the actual culprit was a missing unref on the stream, leaving the connection open :/15:41
willcookeso is a cache the way to go?15:41
larsuwillcooke: yes, like we have on the phone15:41
willcookeah, cool15:42
larsuwillcooke: we already ship a cache...15:42
larsuin /usr/share/libtimezonemap/ui/cities15000.txt15:42
larsuwhich is almost 5mb :/15:42
willcookewoah, yes - lots of data there15:43
* seb128 needs to go but is going to read the backlog and comment tomorrow if the topic is not settled by then :-)15:43
willcookecya seb12815:44
seb128see you tomorrow!15:44
larsuI think having a couple of major cities for every time zone locally is enough15:44
willcookeand then get rid of the cities15000 file?15:44
larsusomething like that15:44
larsuI wonder if people will be ok with that though15:45
willcookehrm15:45
larsudepends on what else is using libtimezonemap15:45
willcookeI mean, if it's already there, can't we just use it?15:45
larsulike, the phone's settings for example15:45
larsuwillcooke: we can, but I think it's quite wasteful15:45
willcookeIf it's already in use on the phone then I think it would be better to use that than to implement a "new" thing15:46
larsuya of course15:46
larsuthe idea is to make the file smaller (but keep the same lib)15:47
LaneyYou can fix this bug without changing the file15:47
larsuand fix a couple of bugs in the process15:47
Laneythe discussions don't have to be coupled15:47
willcookeadd gzip support to the library?15:47
larsuLaney: indeed15:47
willcookeso would a first step be to get the panel to use that lib?15:48
Laneyit already does15:48
larsuit already does, but not the local-file part15:48
Laneythe change is to get the widget to use the offline cache15:48
larsufor reasons I don't know yet15:48
larsutedg might know15:48
willcookeahh15:48
willcookeI get it15:48
larsuwillcooke: sorry if I was unclear - we've been talking about this all day :)15:48
* larsu doesn't know what has been said yet15:49
* willcooke shuts the hell up15:49
larsuhaha don't!15:49
willcooke:D15:49
willcookeriiight - so shipping the 5MB file on the phone is a bad idea, right?  That was your point I expect15:50
larsuya15:51
willcookegotya15:51
willcookeseems to be quite a lot of duplicate cities in that list with slight lat/lng differences15:54
willcookeI'll try and de-dupe it and see what it looks like afterwards15:54
Laneyno15:54
willcookejust based on city name15:54
Laneyit comes straight from geonames.org15:54
willcookeahh15:55
LaneyA fix, if there is one to be had, would be to use one of the smaller ones probably15:55
LaneyOr let the user load a different one, or something15:55
LaneyIt's a worthwhile discussion but I'd rather avoid coupling it with the more important fix to have the panel use this offline database15:56
willcookesounds good15:56
willcookecarry on15:57
willcooke;p15:57
tseliotnessita: ok, that was just to confirm that the problem had nothing to do with the graphics driver, since both the textual and the graphics splash fail15:57
* Laney screams/weeps16:02
Laneywhy can't ubuntu have locales-all?16:02
nessitatseliot, right. Any other workaround or debug info I can try/get?16:22
tseliotnessita: you might want to ask cyphermox, since the bug report is assigned to him16:39

nessitacyphermox, hello, you around? I'm having issues when starting up my ubuntu vivid installation, the splash screen gets stuck for a long period of time, and the login screen seems to "restart" several times before is actually shown. cyphermoxnessita: that doesn't mention anything wrong17:25
Laneyphew, uploaded --- hopefully this works17:26
Laneybye chaps!17:26
cyphermoxnessita: that is for the splash screen before the installer starts?17:34
nessitacyphermox, nopes, this is the splash screen on normal boot17:41
nessitathe splash screen hangs for around 40 seconds17:41
nessitathis is an SSD drive, so booting on 40 seconds is crazy17:41
cyphermoxAnd it doesn't say anything on the splash screen? Maybe try to boot with verbose to see what's happening at the time17:47
nessitacyphermox, any instructions to boot with verbose? editing the boot line and ...?17:48
cyphermoxYou just remove quiet splash and replace that with verbose17:49
nessitakk17:49
nessitawill try that17:49
