DBoyzdaftykins: Ubuntu Utopic Unicorn (development branch) \n \l08:40
DBoyzDescription:    Ubuntu Utopic Unicorn (development branch)08:41
DBoyziptable: i've been trying to upgrade to vivid but the mirror server i've been subscribing has missing files08:42
DBoyzhence upgrade aborted08:42
iptabletagwolf, if mv has multiple-files as source, the destination needs to be a directory, as it's a move, not rename.08:42
iptabletagwolf, so mv *.mod *.mpeg will say "*.mpeg directory not found"08:42
daftykinsDBoyz: so it's not even updated enough to be stable, interesting08:42
DBoyzdaftykins: http://paste.ubuntu.com/11127174/08:43
iptableDBoyz, ok, so your system is not utopic, it's half-updated between utopic and vivid08:43
tagwolfwhat about multiple destinations08:43
iptableDBoyz, change mirror, upgrade again?08:43
DBoyz._. okay08:43
tagwolfnot multiple sources08:43
tagwolfI understand that part cause I move multiple sources all the time08:43
DBoyziptable: that's my second time changing mirror08:43
tagwolfbut I've never tried to do: mv myfile.txt *08:43
DBoyzbut shall i stick with vivid or should i revert to utopic?08:43
iptabletagwolf, all parameters apart from the last one are treated as a source. you cannot tell mv to have multiple destinations08:44
tagwolfcause that would be stupid :P08:44
tagwolfok good!08:44
daftykinsDBoyz: well i'm pretty sure you should've been up to date on utopic before upgrading to vivid08:44
tagwolfcause if it fully evaluated the destination.. that'd be bad :P08:44
iptabletagwolf, essentially, first bash will expand the * to files and then mv does the trick with parameters expanded by bash.08:44
daftykinsDBoyz: up to you :> risk what you will!08:44

gp5sthas that changed or did I just forget? I thought it always read from stdin?14:42
Seveasyou forgot14:42
gp5st:)14:43
TJ-gp5st: The "-" means "read input from /dev/stdin not a regular file" - which you need when piping the output of one command into the stdin of another like that14:43
gp5stTJ-: I know, but it's also common for commands to read from stdin when no files are specified14:44
EriC^^gp5st: i don't think --armor is needed14:44

Dreddythanks14:47
ngochaiafter apache2 means when it's fully started14:48
Seveasngochai: you don't. apache2 isn't started as an upstart unit so upstart can't have it as dependency.14:48
Seveasngochai: also, upstart is dead. As of 15.04, systemd rules the world.14:49
DexterFSeveas: oh? I didn't even hear that on the IT news. Does that go for all ubuntus?14:50
cfhowlett!systemd | DexterF14:50
ubottuDexterF: systemd is the default init system for Ubuntu 15.04 onwards. For information on transitioning from upstart to systemd, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SystemdForUpstartUsers14:50
SeveasDexterF: I believe so, though I only use the original Ubuntu myself.14:50

DexterFcfhowlett: good to know. how Canonical changed their mind? I'm the first to cheer for more unification int he linux world on base levels, with all discussion about systemd, but at least you don't have to reinvent your approaches of system management everytime you switch to another environment14:52

TJ-raheel: configuring squid for transparent is a one-line setting. Do you really mean, you've not got the hang of the netfilters redirection rules set by iptables?18:00
raheeli basically followed three steps 1. enabled ip fwding   2. changed http_port to 3128 intercept  3. added iptables rule iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i wlan0 -p tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to-port 312818:01

TJ-raheel: What port do you have squid listening on, 3128? Does it proxy requests if you set it as an explicit proxy in the clients ?18:04
TJ-raheel: That will confirm that squid is OK, then you can focus on the netfilters rules18:04
dtigueEriC^^, just ran it real quick, that worked! When all else fails, use bash scripting huh?18:04
EriC^^:D18:04
raheelTJ  if the client use 3128 as the port then squid is working fine and shows activity if they change their proxy setting to none then no activity at all in squid.18:05

raheelhow do i find out if say this rule iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i wlan0 -p tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to-port 3128 is in effect18:06
TJ-raheel: Is squid on a network router?18:06
raheeliptables -L does not display any change18:07
TJ-raheel: that's because you're adding the rule to the *nat* table but only listing the *filter* table. Try "sudo iptables -t nat -vL"18:07
raheelTJ nope it is on a simple PC running ubuntu server and squid. i am logged into it right now18:07

If the kernel has panic'd then it can't be trusted to safely write to disk (a crashkernel can get around this, but I don't think Ubuntu uses one by default). MrHeavyMaybe some context would be helpful -- I'm doing some testing with overlayroot in VirtualBox, and after I install and enable overlayroot, then reboot, it stops automatically booting the first option22:38
MrHeavyGRUB_TIMEOUT is still set in /etc/default/grub22:38
EriC^MrHeavy: maybe the first entry is different22:39
MrHeavyDefinitely not, I just pull up the console and hit Enter and it boots22:39
EriC^you mean the grub menu22:39

MrHeavyI pull up the graphical console of the VM, which is sitting at the GRUB menu22:40

lordduneHi, can someone please help me, I have a corrupt password / login after upgrading from Ubuntu 12.04 LTS to 14.04 LTS. Any attempt to (correctly) log in results in a loop error, taking me back to the login. Same for Guest. Same for TTY login. I am currently logged in to this computer via the USB Live 14.04 version.23:19
gzcwnkso you can see the / disk? specifically /etc/?23:20
gzcwnklorddune: so you can see the / disk? specifically /etc/?23:20
lorddunegzcwnk: sure, the disk is fine23:21
gzcwnklordlune ive only done thsi on debian....23:21
kill275 MH/s and 1.8 BILLION difficulty23:21
gzcwnkcd /etc/23:21
gzcwnkand do a touch file23:21
lorddunegzcwnk: I was actually looking at it using an old Parted Magic disk I had earlier23:22
=== ferret__ is now known as ferret_
gzcwnkcan you do that or is teh disk read only?23:22
lorddunegzcwnk: from what I've read, 12.04 used Unity for the login credentials, and 14.04 uses something else. This has caused thousands of people the same issues as me, but in searching for an answer there is literally hundreds of solutions and I am by no means an expert.23:23
lorddunegzcwnk: the disk is readable, I was looking at some files earlier, and even ran a few programs23:23
gzcwnkI am assuming you can blank the passwd file for your user23:23
gzcwnkis it writable?23:24
lorddunegzcwnk: haha, that is the rub....I do not know how to do any of that23:24
gzcwnktype this  "cd /etc ; touch file"23:24
gzcwnkwhat happens?23:24
lorddunegzcwnk: permission denied23:25
lorddunegzcwnk: I am logged in as 'Ubuntu' via the live disk23:25
gzcwnkok im just going to google for a moment23:26
gzcwnkbrb23:26
lorddunegzcwnk: ok thanks23:26
ki7rwwell, should the entire drive be encrypted rather than just the home directories and swap?23:27
gzcwnkactually ubuntu has a doc on how to, -->  http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/linux/reset-your-forgotten-ubuntu-password-in-2-minutes-or-less/23:27
gzcwnkcan you follow this?23:27
Jordan_Ulorddune: Please try chrooting into your installation from the LiveCD and using "su" to switch to one non-root user, then "su lorddune" to switch to your user (which should prompt for your password).23:27
EriC^lorddune: it's probably a pam issue23:27
lorddunegzcwnk: but it's not that23:27
wldcordeiro_How do you combine two partitions into one in (k)ubuntu?23:28
EriC^lorddune: did you try logging in 2-3 times consecutively?23:28
EriC^wldcordeiro_: like what 2 partitions?23:28
wldcordeiro_EriC^: Yeah23:29
wldcordeiro_I used to have a windows and linux partition.23:29
Jordan_Uwldcordeiro_: What do you mean by "combine"? What is your current situation and what is your end goal?23:29
wldcordeiro_reformatted the windows to ext423:29
gzcwnkwldordeiro you have then lvm'd?23:29
wldcordeiro_and now want to have one big linux.23:29
Bashing-omlorddune: Maybe try and reset the password ? http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/resetpassword .23:29
EriC^wldcordeiro_: just delete the windows one and resize the linux partition (from a live usb)23:29
gzcwnkif you lvm'd ubuntu you can do that easily23:29
wldcordeiro_Ah I need to do it from a live usb.23:30
wldcordeiro_gzcwnk: lvm?23:30
EriC^yeah you can't resize a mounted partition23:30
gzcwnklogical volume manager23:30
wldcordeiro_Ah okay.23:30
lordduneEriC^: yes, it is because the 14.04 LTS upgrade uses "ubuntu-session" for login credentials and 12.04 LTS used Unity. So my .xauthority is all screwed up, but I am not adept enough to attempt to fix it without a hand.23:30
EriC^lorddune: just delete it23:30
gzcwnkyou cant on ubuntu?23:30
lordduneEriC^: How?23:30
wldcordeiro_Is there a good live usb image out there or will an ubuntu live usb do?23:30
EriC^lorddune: but you say tty logins fail too, so .Xauthority is unrelated..23:30
Jordan_Uwldcordeiro_: You'll obviously need to copy off any important data from one of the partitions before you delete it.23:31
EriC^lorddune: boot recovery mode drop to root shell, type rm /home/<user>/.Xauthority23:31
gzcwnkreset the password23:31
azizLIGHTi got a message about debconf on my pc: "Configuring grub-efi-amd64. What do you want to do about modified configuration file grub?" where is the old file in question, and the new file in qustion, so i can fix this problem? I have dual boot and luks partitions i dont want to mess up23:31
Jordan_Uwldcordeiro_: Just grab an Ubuntu LiveUSB.23:31
azizLIGHTthis is after i updated grub23:31
lordduneEriC^: OK, as I said, there are hundreds of solutions to this problem in the Ubuntu Forums. I have tried maybe a dozen and nothing works yet.23:31
wldcordeiro_Jordan_U: Thanks.23:31
EriC^lorddune: usually .Xauthority will make the login in lightdm loop over23:31
EriC^lorddune: i think you have a pam issue23:32
lorddunegzcwnk: my password actually works. the system is stuck in a login loop.23:32
Jordan_UazizLIGHT: It should offer to show you a diff of the two files. Please pastebin that diff.23:32
EriC^did you see any solutions relating to pam?23:32
Jordan_Uwldcordeiro_: You're welcome.23:32
lordduneEriC^: no, but I did see some mentions of the lightdm issue relating to the looping23:33
Jordan_Ulorddune: Did you understand my request?23:33
azizLIGHTJordan_U: which option do i pick for that? choices: http://i.imgur.com/Gvw1wcV.png23:33
esalinashello, could someone help me with this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2278235&p=13285399#post13285399  ??23:33
lordduneJordan_U: I did not see anything from you, sorry23:34
Jordan_UazizLIGHT: The one you have highlighted there is the one you want.23:34
EriC^lorddune: try typing sudo pam-auth-update23:34
gzcwnklorddune then I cant help sorry23:34
Jordan_Ulorddune: Please try chrooting into your installation from the LiveCD and using "su" to switch to one non-root user, then "su lorddune" to switch to your user (which should prompt for your password).23:34
Bashing-omlorddune: Do you own and group ' ls -al .ICEauthority ; la -al /home ' ?23:34
lordduneJordan_U: sorry, not sure how to do that exactly23:35
azizLIGHTJordan_U: i clicked that, and clicked forward... and nothing happened23:35
Jordan_Ulorddune: Is your installed Ubuntu's root filesystem currently mounted?23:35
Jordan_UazizLIGHT: What do you currently see on the screen?23:35
lordduneJordan_U: Yes23:35
Jordan_Ulorddune: What is its mountpoint?23:36
azizLIGHTJordan_U: the window disappeared and system updater says my pc is up to date. and i see my chat window23:36
lordduneJordan_U: I am not sure because the upgrade made things look very odd23:36
azizLIGHTi hope it didnt overwrite my grub ...23:36
EriC^lorddune: try sudo pam-auth-update23:37
EriC^see if all the modules are selected23:37
lordduneEriC^: which option to select?23:37
EriC^have them all selected23:38
lordduneEriC^: 'Unix Authentication'?23:38
EriC^every single one23:38
azizLIGHTwhat does the new grub config file look like so i can update it with my personalizations23:38
lordduneEriC^: OK23:38
Jordan_UazizLIGHT: The diff was probably "shown" in a hidden by default terminal, which can be unhid by pressing a triangly which brings up what is essentially a terminal. The default option for dpkg is always to keep your modified version of the configuration file, so that's probably what it did.23:38
Jordan_UazizLIGHT: Look at /etc/default/grub.23:38
lordduneEriC^: done although i did not see it do anything23:38
azizLIGHTJordan_U: by pressing a triangly. what does this mean23:39
EriC^did you try logging in?23:39
azizLIGHTJordan_U: that has my personalized file right now. so nothing was changed?23:39
EriC^lorddune: wait how are you doing it anyways?23:39
Jordan_UazizLIGHT: Typo for "triangle", meaning that the last time I remember seeing something like this the button to unhide the terminal was a triangle shape.23:40
lordduneEriC^: how am I doing that command? As the root (Ubuntu) user from Live USB23:40
EriC^oh23:40
EriC^you need to chroot into your install first23:40
Jordan_Ulorddune: Please pastebin the output of "mount".23:40
azizLIGHTJordan_U: im not sure what/where this triangle is at all? first time im hearing about this23:40
lordduneJordan_U: sorry I forgot how to do that23:41
azizLIGHTlorddune: do mount | pastebinit23:41
azizLIGHTlorddune: then copy the url outputted, and paste it here23:42
Jordan_UazizLIGHT: It was probably on the (now gone) window that was asking you what you wanted to do about the changed configuration file.23:42
lorddunehahaha well pastebin doesnt exist on this23:42
lordduneazizLIGHT: pastebin not on here23:43
azizLIGHTlorddune: ah well. its a nice tool you should have for future use!23:43
EriC^sudo apt-get install pastebinit23:43
lordduneazizLIGHT: I have it on my main OS lol, I can;t login23:43
azizLIGHTwhy doesnt pastebinit ship by default23:43
EriC^lorddune: then type sudo lsblk -f | pastebinit23:43
lordduneJordan_U: sudo apt-get install pastebinit23:43
lordduneJordan_U: thanks for the guidance23:44
azizLIGHTJordan_U: alright so it looks like nothing was changed in my grub .... i think? im safe for now?23:44
lordduneJordan_U: http://paste.ubuntu.com/11138009/23:44
Jordan_UazizLIGHT: Yes, like I said, it defaults to keeping your modified version.23:44
azizLIGHTphew ok23:44
Jordan_Ulorddune: Please pastebin the output of "sudo blkid".23:45
azizLIGHThow come lorddune doesnt have any / mount23:45
Jordan_Ulorddune: sudo blkid | pastebinit23:45
EriC^azizLIGHT: it's a live usb23:46
azizLIGHTah nvm i see it now23:46
lordduneJordan_U: http://paste.ubuntu.com/11138045/23:46
EriC^lorddune: type sudo parted -l | pastebinit23:47
Jordan_Ulorddune: Do you know which of those ext4 partitions has your root filesystem?23:47
lordduneJordan_U: well I know where 12.04 was23:48
EriC^bleh23:48
lordduneJordan_U: http://paste.ubuntu.com/11138063/23:48
lordduneJordan_U: yes, sda123:49
Jordan_Ulorddune: Great. "sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/"23:49
lordduneJordan_U: at least that's where my last 3 versions of Ubuntu were23:50
Jordan_Ulorddune: Upgrading Ubuntu won't change which partition is used for your root filesystem.23:50
lordduneJordan_U: Embarrasingly, I never intended to ypdate to 14.04 LTS. I accidently clicked on it one night (while a bit drunk)23:50
lordduneJordan_U: ok done23:51
Jordan_Ulorddune: Then "sudo chroot /mnt/". This should bring you to a root shell essentially within your installed system.23:51
lordduneJordan_U: yeah, it's weird as I noticed during the update it was deleting many of the files I had set up for my FX card23:52
Jordan_Ulorddune: Then, to test logging in here, run "su yourusername", which should switch you to your user without asking for a password, then run "su yourusername" again, which should prompt you for your password this time.23:52
lordduneJordan_U: "Unable to resolve host ubuntu23:53
gzcwnktahts normalish23:54
lordduneJordan_U: actually it worked as what I thought was a User and not Root23:56
lordduneJordan_U: I have the "$" prompt now23:57
Jordan_Ulorddune: Were you prompted for your password?23:57
lordduneJordan_U: when I try it the 2nd time it says "must be run from a terminal"23:57
tapoutSo i'm using windows 8 with vmware to launch ubuntu.  I develop in it.  I'm wondering, what do ya'll think.. should I just install ubuntu and say bye bye to win 8?\23:59
