hr49Hello. I am having difficulty changing the width of text beneath icons on the desktop using Xubuntu 15.04. I edited my .gtkrc-2.0 to include `XfdesktopIconView::cell-text-width-proportion' and changed its value, but nothing about my desktop layout changed after I issued `killall xfdesktop' or even restarted the computer. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.01:42

xubuntu02wHello! Anyone here?13:44
knomeno, we're all hiding13:47
xubuntu02wI am working in ROS Hydro, and the package in question is only supported in Ubuntu 12.04 . Now I'd like to install Xubuntu 12.04 but it seems that it reached the end of life. Is there any way where I can still download the last version of Xubuntu 12.04? I can't seem to find it13:47
xubuntu02wLol, nice timing13:47
knomehttp://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/12.04.4/release/13:48
knomethe core packages (which are shared with ubuntu) will still get updates, anything xubuntu-related/specific won't, so on that front you are own your own and run the release at your own risk13:49
xubuntu02wI understand13:49
xubuntu02wThanks a lot :)13:49
knomei'm sure there are ways to get the package working in later versions too, but you should ask the developers for your application for that13:49
knome(it's even possible that the said package works for later versions too...)13:49
xubuntu02wBy the way, isn't the 12.04.05 the last version?13:50
xubuntu02wXubuntu 12.04.413:50
xubuntu02whttp://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/precise/daily/current/13:50
knomexubuntu didn't release .513:50
xubuntu02wOh, I see13:51
xubuntu02wThanks knome13:51

xubuntu02wHmm, I have some doubts concerning Xfce.. I am running Ubuntu 12.04, and I was told to install Xfce to run things smoother. When I check some install guides, they all tell me to run this code14:09
xubuntu02wsudo add-apt-repository ppa:xubuntu-dev/xfce-4.1014:10
xubuntu02wwhich gives me this error: Cannot access PPA (https://launchpad.net/api/1.0/~xubuntu-dev/+archive/xfce-4.08) to get PPA information, please check your internet connection.14:10
xubuntu02wI already tried looking for the problem , but no success14:10
xubuntu02wAny clues?14:11
xubuntu86ihi all14:23
brainwashxubuntu02w: the Xfce 4.10 PPA is gone now that Xubuntu 12.04 is not supported anymore14:24

eatmyidHello again.15:33
WalliskiHi15:36
eatmyidSo installation went well \0/ but I was reading about some settings re ubuntu/amazon/canonical-diagnostics & how to turn them off.15:39
eatmyidTho can't find em, is this not valid on xubuntu?15:40
brainwasheatmyid: only valid for Ubuntu with the Unity desktop environment15:41
eatmyidok, that's good.15:42
drceatmyid: You have to be careful with articles written about "ubuntu".  Xubuntu is basically the xfce DE on top of Ubuntu (minus the unity DE). If you are looking for info on, say, the kernel, articles about ubuntu should be helpful.  On the other hand, as you have found out, articles about ubuntu that are unity-centric won't do you much good.15:45
drcIt's a learning process to know what to rely on.15:48
eatmyidYes its all pretty new, wasn't sure to which degree xubuntu was attached to ubuntu.15:48
drcat the hip :)15:48
drcbut the arms and legs are seperate :)15:49
eatmyidWas surprised to have to go to ubuntu website for xubuntu md5 hash.15:50
holsteinxubuntu *is* ubuntu15:51
xanguaubuntu is ubuntu15:51
holsteinsame sources.. you can add everything that is in xubuntu into stock ubuntu, for example.. or the other way around..15:51
xubuntu67wHello, I'm new to linux entirely and am having an issue with my Xubuntu desktop - it won't load.18:35
xubuntu67wAfter logging it, the only visible element on my desktop is the taskbar (which is only displaying the time)18:36
xubuntu67wI cannot right click on the desktop, nor can I access the applications menu18:37
xubuntu67wI have done little to the OS since installing yesterday (i've made appearance changes abd removed/installed my preferred softwar)e18:38
oiuIs there a way to disable the Alt-1/2/3/etc. keys switching tabs in Terminal?18:40
Unit193Yep, in Preferences => Advanced18:41
xubuntu67wIs ubuntu core essentially an equivalent to 15.04, without the pre-installed software?18:45
oiuUnit193: Does this require me to restart the terminal or anything?18:49
oiuUnchecking everything didn't change it.18:49
Unit193oiu: You hit disable on both?  You could try restarting the terminal, but I don't believe that's needed.  Been too long since I did that though.19:04
oiuI did, and I will in a moment.19:04
oiuUnit193: No change.19:05
win95Is xubuntu's / Xfce's development digressing?20:26
ObrienDavemost likely not20:26
knomewin95, what's the real question?20:26
win95Looking to use xubuntu as a full-time OS and do not want to be limited with consistent updates / support in the future (do to lack of funding / development)20:27
win95*due to20:27
knomewell, both xubuntu and xfce are worked on by volunteers, so if you are looking for something that will have absolutely guaranteed updates, you should look for paid alternatives...20:28
ObrienDavemain difference between *ubuntus is the DE not the core system20:28
win95I see20:29
win95Do most of you use xubuntu as a primary OS20:30
ObrienDavei do20:30
knomeit's very likely that the majority in this channel do20:31
win95I'm asking simply because I am new to linux and would like to make a switch from windows20:31
ObrienDavei dual boot Xubuntu and *shudder* Win720:31
win95I am currently dual booting, but don't like it20:31
win95I would like to try xubuntu core, but have had trouble installing it20:32
win95I don't really know what I'm doing to be honest20:32
ObrienDaveat least you're honest about it :)20:33
knomewin95, i would install from the main ISO in that case20:33
win95I tried installing the ISO provided by unit193.net (linked on the xubuntu website) and mounting to a USB stick using YUMI. However, when I restart my PC, the usb stick does not appear as a bootable device in BIOS20:34
win95I'm currently on win 8.120:35
knomewell, please note that the core ISOs aren't official yet20:35
knomebut it might be that your BIOS doesn't support booting from USB20:35
knomeor that you have done something wrong20:35
win95I don't have a CD drive. I have installed xubuntu in the past from USB using the YUMI application20:36
Unit193If it's 8.1, it should support it but it'll need UEFI and the amd64 image.20:36
win95I mean, the only reason why I'm interested in xubuntu core is because I would prefer to install my own software as opposed to removing most of the preinstalled software20:38
Unit193win95: If you are indeed switching from Windows, I'd recommend the usual Desktop ISOs, this is for more advanced usage.20:38
win95alright20:38
knomeyes, xubuntu core isn't exactly the same as xubuntu without applications20:38
win95ok, i see20:39
win95In that case, I would likely benefit from the regular release20:39
knomethat would be at least a good starting point if you are new to linux20:39
win95Any advice on whether or not I should install the LTS release of 15.04?20:39
win95*or 15.0420:39
ObrienDave14.04 is LTS20:40
knomedepends on what you are looking for; LTS if you want maximum stability20:40
win95Are the updates with 15.04 significant?20:40
knomedepends what's important to you...20:41
win95I will do some more research and compare them in greater detail20:41
ObrienDaveand if you want to upgrade every 9 months or so20:41
knomegenerally "yes", since it's one year newer than 14.04, but as i said, if you want maximum stability, you want LTS20:42
knomeit likely doesn't have anything you can't live without20:42
win95despite being a lightweight OS, xubuntu will be able to handle running multiple applications, yes (i.e. large music library, photo / video editing software, and so on)?20:44
knomewin95, that's the point; the system uses less resources so more resources will be left for the tasks you do20:44
ObrienDaveyes, it's only a lightweight DE20:44
win95does anyone run wine on xubuntu?20:46
win95Is it buggy and should I avoid it?20:46
knomeit's an emulator, so it isn't perfect20:46
ObrienDavei don't, but you can run WINE20:47
win95The issue is, I'm a college student and so some windows applications may be necessary to use at some point20:47
knomethen you'll want to do research on if they will run with wine before you remove windows20:47
win95ok20:48
knomesometimes there are free alternative software, but definitely not always, especially when it's somebody else who tells you what you should use20:48
JuanMartinHi everyone! Nice to be here20:49
knomehello20:49
ObrienDaveGreetings & Welcome20:49
win95yeah, i mean it seems a lot harder to find windows equivalent software on linux that provides the same features20:51
JuanMartinI need some help... Im from Argentina (yes, where the football is a mess of people fighting LOL) and Im trying to setup an old PC of a client that has a VIA S3 UniChrome VGA controller. I Can't lower the screen resolution to 1024x768 because everytime I try to do it I get a black screen and X doesnt start again, even if I reboot the machine20:51
JuanMartinI REALLY DONT WANT TO SET UP WINDOWS XP AGAIN20:51
