GefilteFishCan someone help me fix this "boot device not found 3f0" error? What I did was delete my EFI partition now I'm stuck with a bricked laptop with Xubuntu installed, but inaccessible. All the Linux distros I've tried on a LiveUSB won't boot. Super Grub2 Disk is the only exception but it's kind of useless. I can use it to get to Xubuntu's terminal though.00:00

BadLuckRyanHello, can someone walk me through how to recreate my EFI partition? I deleted it by accident but found a way to make one with GParted. I have a workaround to get to Xubuntu desktop but when my laptop boots normally I get "boot device not found 3f0".   Basically, i need to repopulate the /boot/efi/ path15:21
BluesKaj!uefi15:23
ubottuUEFI is a specification that defines a software interface between an operating system and platform firmware. It is meant as a replacement for the BIOS. For information on how to set up and install Ubuntu and its derivatives on UEFI machines please read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI15:23
BadLuckRyanOk thanks15:24
BadLuckRyanIs it possible to repopulate my EFI partition via command line?15:31
BadLuckRyanBecause i can't reinstall my OS via live USB.. It jist wont boot15:31
BluesKajBadLuckRyan, try the legacy mode with secure boot disabled in the uefi/bios15:34
BluesKajBadLuckRyan, and the usb as first in the boot sequence15:35
BadLuckRyanI've tried that numerous times unless theres a specific way to enter 'legacy mode'. I just press F10 and get to the BIOS15:36
=== ValicekB_ is now known as ValicekB
BluesKajBadLuckRyan, in the uefi/bios look for the uefi in the "Boot" section of the efi/bios and click it to change to legacy15:55
BadLuckRyanYea my laptops completely bricked now. And there is no legacy mode option in my BIOS. Using a Pavilion x216:04
RobertJDohnertThe Pavilion x2 has a legacy mode16:05
RobertJDohnertBadLuckRyan its under Secureboot Configuration16:09
BadLuckRyanMaybe im blind. So i press F10 which takes me to my "Setup Utility" (BIOS right?)16:13
BadLuckRyanGo over to System Configuration16:13
BadLuckRyan'Boot Options'16:13
RobertJDohnertRight and you should have something that says16:13
RobertJDohnertSecureboot configuration16:13
BadLuckRyanI only have the option to Enable and Disable it16:14
BadLuckRyanThere are two blacked out options under it that say "Platform Key" & "Pending Action"16:14
RobertJDohnertWhen you disable it thats legacy mode16:15
BadLuckRyanOh, well that doesn't help because it's been disabled16:16
=== max is now known as Guest14631
RobertJDohnertOnce its been disabled you dont need to use GPT formatting16:17
RobertJDohnertLegacy Mode does NOT recognize GPT formatting16:17
RobertJDohnertIf your drive is larger than 2 TB's you need to partition it off16:18
BluesKajuefi isn't cooperating with his usb boot on which he has a kubuntu image to install16:21
RobertJDohnertAnd he toasted his drive16:22
BluesKajhow? , we didn't suggest any partitioning16:23
RobertJDohnertHe just said the thing wqas a brick16:24
RobertJDohnertIs it a good key? because with Secure boot disabled it should start16:25
BluesKajwell, that's because his boot sequence wasn't set up to boot usb first afaik16:25
OerHeksmaybe fastboot is enabled, that can cause trouble too16:26
BadLuckRyanMy os is completely wiped now16:26
BluesKajyeah OerHeks, good point16:27
BadLuckRyanTheres nothing left. No linux-swap, efi, or OS16:27
BluesKajBadLuckRyan, how do you know?16:27
BadLuckRyanI did put USB first on the list16:28
BluesKajdid you use the live media to wipe it16:28
BadLuckRyanBecause i can boot up Super Grub2 Disk & i can see that my OS is no longer bootable16:29
=== aaron__ is now known as ahoneybun
BadLuckRyanLinux-swap may still be lingering around16:29
BluesKajwhich OS?16:29
BadLuckRyanTheres something about Super Grub2 Disk thats allowed to boot via USB while others just cant16:30
BadLuckRyanKubuntu16:30
BluesKajdo you have a windows install ?16:31
BadLuckRyanI have nothing now.. I just need something thats bootable16:31
BadLuckRyanNo, no windows either16:31
RobertJDohnertWell you can always go download the Windows 10 preview16:32
BluesKajdid you have ? and /home partitions ?16:32
BluesKajoops / amd /home16:32
BadLuckRyanI dont think its that easy. Windows 10 probably wont boot from liveUSB16:34
BadLuckRyanI dont know BluesKaj16:34
BadLuckRyanIm just stuck on "Boot Device Not Found 3f0" and the only thing that can actually boot via liveUSB is Super Grub2 Disk. I tried Ubuntu, Manjaro, OpenSuse, etc to no avail.16:36
OerHeksIf win10 would not boot from usb, surface guys going to cry16:36
ascothello there, is it possible to prevent screen locking in Kubuntu 15.04 while playing youtube or flash players (twitch) in fullscreen or not? I already tried caffeine but didin't work16:39
RobertJDohnertActually Windows 10 does boot from USB I installed it on an envy from USB16:39
RobertJDohnertYou need a USB creator https://rufus.akeo.ie/16:39
RobertJDohnertascot, no 15.04 uses Plasma 5 Beta and currently there is nothing that works16:40
RobertJDohnertThats why most people have gone back down to 14.10 or 14.0416:40
ascotoh I see, guess I'll just have to increase the time, thanks for the quick answer!16:42
RobertJDohnertYou can try mucking with your power and display options but the problem being that those settings will be permanent until you change them16:42
RobertJDohnertPlasma 5 makes me want to use Unity sometimes16:43
BluesKajI miss the different wallpapers on each virtual desktop16:44
RobertJDohnertI feel bad for BadLuckRyan16:45
BluesKajcan't assign them anymore, each VD uses the same background16:45

ZippiNinjahmahs, do you have the screen tearing prevention on? If so, try to change OpenGL from 2.0 to 3.1 and back again21:24
Zippior the otherway around21:24
Zippior change tearing prevention off and on again21:25
Zippithere are silly fixes that might work21:25
BluesKajFF has a new version as well, but it should have have autoupgraded21:25
Ninjahmahstearing prevention is on auto21:26
ZippiI don't think auto works, for me it doesn't help with tearing21:27
Zippikinda like, it's not detecting tearing to begin with21:27
BluesKajNinjahmahs, firefox 37.02?21:27
Ninjahmahsthe stock ffox that came with kubuntu 15.0421:27
Ninjahmahsinstalled like  1 day ago so the latest version from update21:28
ZippiI think that would be 3821:28
Ninjahmahstbh having set the compositor to either of the open gl modes makes it not tear21:28
Ninjahmahsit was on xrender before21:28
ZippiI see21:28
ZippiAnyway, I think something wonky going on with the compositor and tearing, only if you change some setting, does it start to work21:29
Ninjahmahsin opengl intwerface option i get glx or elx choice, should i be using one in particular, its defaulted to glx and seems like things are ok21:30
Zippiglx should be ok21:30
Ninjahmahsright, i thought it was maybe something to do with noveau getting installed during fresh install21:30
Ninjahmahsthen applying the nvidia drivers after21:30
Ninjahmahsas i seem to recall that when you use nvidia drivers a lot of people have suggested purging noveau afterwards or at least blacklisting, and im a bit new to linux21:31
ZippiI'm quite new too, though haven't heard about that21:31
ZippiI would expect the driver manager to purge the noveau while installing the nvidia one though21:32
Ninjahmahsnot sure if its still relevant but yeah some people were finding having both noveau drivers and nvidia drivers around would cause issues sometimes21:32
Ninjahmahsyeah maybe it does in newer versions of ubuntu base21:32
ZippiI think I can check if I still have it21:32
Ninjahmahslike installing kubuntu 15.04 was the first time that when i clicked the driver manager it actually had re cognised and offered me the proprietary drivers as an optiong, mint had a no drivers installed message21:33
Ninjahmahsand was a right run around21:33
Zippiit does seem I still have the nouveau driver installed21:37
Ninjahmahsif you google about a little, you will see a lot of people find purging nouveau helps when using nvidia drivers21:38
Ninjahmahsalthough im not sure how that is on this version of ubuntu base21:38
Zippiyeah, I'll do some research21:39
Ninjahmahsodd i cant seem to get these to install21:40
NinjahmahsThe packages containing debug information for the following application and libraries are missing:21:40
Ninjahmahs/usr/bin/plasmashell21:40
Ninjahmahs/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libQt5Core.so.521:40
Ninjahmahs/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/qt5/plugins/platforms/libqxcb.so21:40
Ninjahmahsand another 4 similar21:41
Ninjahmahscant send this bug report as it isnt good enough without those installed but it wont let me install them *shrugs*21:41
GroklingSo, on the nvidia topic - I've found that kubuntu 15.04 blacklists nouveau with nvidia is installed/chosen. The Nouveau driver is working better for me at the moment anyway (I have two cards, four screens)21:41
Ninjahmahsfair, i dont even really need the nvidia drivers i guess21:42
Ninjahmahsi mean im only really using linux for compiling (or practicing to) android roms21:42
ZippiI don't think I tried the nouveau myself either21:43
Zippijust went with the recommended right away21:43
Ninjahmahsi notice the recommended is not the latest version as well21:43
GroklingI tried the nvidia driver, and it broke stuff - four screens = xinerama, and xinerama is well past it's use-by date now. The NVIDIA driver only exposed one GPU to xrandr, so that was a deal breaker.21:43
Ninjahmahsnvidia site offers 346.72 kubuntu suggests 346.5921:43
GroklingI'm well impressed with the kubuntu auto-configuration stuff with nouveau. This is the first distro I've found that will, out of the box, spin up all four of my screens without me having to mess around with drivers, xorg.conf etc. etc.21:45
Ninjahmahsyeh i was quite impressed with my fresh install with kubuntu21:47
Ninjahmahsfyi21:47
Ninjahmahsif people come in saying they are getting random reboots, ask them if they are on an asus motherboard21:47
Ninjahmahsif they are tell them to google anti-surge protection asus bios setting21:47
Ninjahmahs:P21:47
Ninjahmahsit really hates linux and acpi21:48
Ninjahmahslike a lot21:48

Ninjahmahsalthough their gtx line is actually pretty solid for me so far21:50
GroklingNinjahmahs: Can you have a quick look in libreoffice and see if you're getting tooltips? I get the boxes appear, but no words.21:52

Groklingnot sure if it's graphics, themes, libreoffice or something else!21:53
Ninjahmahsso u mean as in when i hover over any button on the ribbons?21:53
Ninjahmahsas im getting text fine21:53
GroklingI also had no mouse cursor until I dropped back to the xrender compositor.21:53
GroklingYeah, valid test. I get just grey boxes hovering the ribbon buttons.21:54
Ninjahmahsshows for me in any libre app21:54
Ninjahmahsfile bug report21:55
Ninjahmahsmight be nouveau specific21:55
GroklingJust me then. Dumb. Sometimes I wish I was mainstream!21:55
Ninjahmahslol21:55
Ninjahmahsim only mainstream on the nvidia driver, just figure its going to best utilise the gfx card tbh21:56
Ninjahmahsspecially with the newer cards21:56
Ninjahmahsmaxwell and linux = issues in general from what im told21:56
GroklingYeah, tempting, but I'm on a pair of GT210s, and they are basic at best (but solid state, so quiet, with two outputs from each) It's the fact that the NVIDIA driver only exposes one interface to xrandr that stops me using it.21:58
GroklingI can run the NVIDIA driver fine, but only get two screens for my trouble.21:58
Ninjahmahsyeh im on a gtx 97021:58
Ninjahmahsthe asus direct cu cooling is basically silent21:58
Ninjahmahscoolers dont kick in until 60 degrees21:59
GroklingMy GPUs never get over 45, and that's pure heatsink goodness.21:59
Ninjahmahsalthough coil whine happens here and there especially on less intensive games as the frame rates go crazy high in menus and cause the whine to be quite noticeable21:59
Zippihmm, this feels ridiculous22:01
ZippiI went to nouveau, it really didn't work well for me22:02
Ninjahmahs?22:02
Zippinow I got back to the recommended driver and now everything just werks22:02
Ninjahmahsgpu model?22:02
Zippino tearing, pretty smooth as well22:02
ZippiGTX 77022:02
Ninjahmahsyeh so maxwell chip22:03
Ninjahmahsbasically anything maxwell is almost "too new" for linux right now, hence why i sticking with the nvid drivers22:03
Zippimy laptop worked well right away, with both nouveau and nvidia one22:04
Zippiit was kinda driving me insane that I got better experience on laptop than desktop22:04
Zippibut now it seems okay22:05
GroklingZippi: Same experience for me.. laptop is perfect. Reckon the devs work on their laptops mostly?22:05
Ninjahmahswell that and laptop cards arent released in as fast models as desktops22:06
Zippiyeah, my laptop is from 2011 anyway22:07
Ninjahmahsfair22:08
Zippiwith that, there's been plenty of years to get things supported22:08
Ninjahmahslol grokling my gtx 970 is sitting at 39 in linux22:08
Zippiin the kernel level at least22:09
Ninjahmahsif i bench it in window on unigine that goes to around maybe 6022:09
Ninjahmahsbut even there the fans dont move22:09
Ninjahmahsunless i oc and bump the fidelity up a fair chunk22:09
GroklingHmm. Now I'm curious. I'm going to grab the valley benchmark and see what kinda dismal score I can get on the GT210 Nouveau combo..22:12
NinjahmahsXd22:12
Ninjahmahsi wish i could play mkx in linux without setting up a vm of windows22:12
Ninjahmahsi would have like no need to run windows at all22:13
Grokling+122:13
GroklingAfter it shutdown for updates in the middle of a VERY important video conference..  Last straw!22:13
Ninjahmahswindows is soooooo boring, like no customisation without using really shady 3rd party softwares, and its just.... i dunno it just feels like im borrowing my computer22:14
GroklingYou won't catch linux pulling that crap!22:14
Ninjahmahsto be fair my windows wouldnt do that either, as i have updates always set to ask me if i even want them downloaded at best22:14
Ninjahmahsauto updates is scourge of life22:15
GroklingI thought I did too.. apparently I'd fobbed it off one time too many.22:15

Grokling'Critical system update' or some junk.22:15

Ninjahmahsso probably some form of anti piracy measures22:16
Ninjahmahslike half the windows updates always are behind the curtain22:16
GroklingSome vulnerability no doubt.22:16
Ninjahmahsoh yeah22:16
Ninjahmahsthey have to leave a back door somewhere22:16
Ninjahmahsotherwise how could they worry consumers with the malicious internet spiel22:17
GroklingThey built the back door alright. They just forgot to build the wall around it.22:17
Ninjahmahsinstead they built a window in22:17
Ninjahmahswith no glass22:17
Ninjahmahslol22:17
GroklingDolphin is pretty crappy... keeps freezing up on me.22:19
Ninjahmahsi think its more like all the latest versions of everything included together22:19
Ninjahmahsu on 15.04 or?22:19
Groklingyeah 15.04 x6422:20
Ninjahmahsyeh i mean im getting crashy stuff here and there22:20
Ninjahmahslike just now the main menu panel crashed out22:20
Ninjahmahsand reset itself22:20
Ninjahmahsthen i tried to report the bug and it wouldnt download the debug stuff for it as it said it couldnt22:20
Ninjahmahsbasically everything in this build is like too new :P22:21
GroklingDolphin borks regularly. I get mouse glitches mid move, tooltips are broken in libre, and I have to use xrender compositing so I can see the mouse cursor. BUT my screens all work. I was on Mint, but kernel update, and mesa update broke my graphics completely. Couldn't not update because Chrome needed updating so I could remote-debug, then the new chrome was crashing the GPU (fixed in later kernel/mesa). And down the rabbit hole I went!22:22
Ninjahmahsgood thing is us being on it and trying to bug report as many crashes as happen means it gets fixed :) eventually22:23
GroklingWhat's the process for reporting bugs with Kubuntu?22:23
Ninjahmahsgenerally it seems any time something crashes u get a notify in the system panel22:23
Ninjahmahsfrom there its click continue and check boxes22:24
Ninjahmahsalthough for me just now it couldnt even install the debug packages it needed to get the bug reports high enough to send a worthy report lol22:24
Ninjahmahsso even thats buggy as of now22:24
ZippiI think it needs "debug symbols" for good reporting22:24
Ninjahmahs^^22:24
Ninjahmahswhich wouldnt install for me22:25
Zippiand I think there was a way to download them manually, since the bug report seems to fail with it sometimes22:25
