GefilteFishCan someone help me fix this "boot device not found 3f0" error? What I did was delete my EFI partition now I'm stuck with a bricked laptop with Xubuntu installed, but inaccessible. All the Linux distros I've tried on a LiveUSB won't boot. Super Grub2 Disk is the only exception but it's kind of useless. I can use it to get to Xubuntu's terminal though.00:00
nomicyou van still00:01
nomicget the files off it by booting it from the live cd, mounting the drive00:01
nomiccopying files off00:01
nomicit's bricked - but you can still mount the drive from the live cd (booted)00:01
nomicby mounting the partition , to be able to reference it as a drive00:02
nomicyou havce ruined the installatin - all you need, is to get the files off it00:02
nomicotherwise, just re-install00:02
nomicif you can get to the terminal, you can still see the volume - you can still access your files00:03
nomicEFI is to do with the BIOS , not the partition00:03
nomicre-install00:04
GefilteFishOk thanks but how would i know the exact path to the files on my liveusb?00:04
nomicmaybe reset your bios to factory settings, if you have screwed that - either by playing around with it00:04
nomicliveusb?  that is it's own environment - you need to mount your partition -t he drive00:04
nomichttp://askubuntu.com/questions/78691/recovering-user-files-with-a-live-cd00:05
nomichttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/DataRecovery00:05
GefilteFishIm not really understanding. Are you saying to mount Xubuntu?00:06
nomicyou mount the drive, on your laptop00:06
nomicusing the instructions00:06
nomicto "mount" is a command which enables you to make the files from another set of media, visible, from your current ubuntu copy00:07
nomicit may even be visible on the desktop00:07
nomicif you  (#1) - boot the pc with the "live" cd / usb00:07
nomicbbl00:08
GefilteFishAlright im gonna give it a try00:09
nomicthere is "ubuntu forums" - for support - leave messages etc - also search for topic "getting data back" "mounting drive from live cd"00:09
nomiccos people are zombies on irc - not really paying attention - you automatically (on a topic like that) get pointers on the forums (very busy place)  http://ubuntuforums.org/00:10
GefilteFishDo you know how to fix failed to fetch error in terminal?00:53
GefilteFishDon't worry I'm not trying to be a zombie. I'm actually searching the internet too00:54
nomicud have to show the error "failed to fetch" - and what you are trying to do01:02
nomicfailed to fetch doesn't say a lot01:03
nomicrelated to what - fetching what01:03
GefilteFishIm trying to install grub01:06
GefilteFishIm doing 'apt-get install grub'01:07
MisterMomGefilteFish, are you using sudo ?01:09
GefilteFishYes i am01:12
MisterMomok01:13
GefilteFishIm doing these 'iwconfig wlan0' commands and it shows that im connected to my wifi... But01:13
GefilteFishNothing01:13
* nomic would blank it, start again - how have you wrecked the boot01:46
nomicthese are not problems just of ubuntu - you would be able to wreck windows far more easily01:46
nomicin actual fact - those sites were recommending the use of ubuntu (live), to recover windows01:46
nomicbecause linux is a serious OS01:47
nomicwhereas windows is not01:47
GefilteFishSo do you have an answer to my failed to fetch question?01:48
GefilteFishIt's fine if you don't01:48
nomicyou offended now because I talked negatively about windows?01:48
nomici detect01:48
nomicyou did not ask a question01:48
nomicbbl.01:48
GefilteFishBe back later?01:49
nomicyeah01:54
GefilteFishTbh windows is more user friendly01:56
segai just clicked the "arrange desktop icons" option in the context menu on the desktop and my icons dissapeared02:00
segaI'm running 15.0402:01
segaAny idea as to why this happened and how I can get them back?02:01
krytariksega: LP bug 1434959.02:04
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1434959 in xfdesktop4 (Ubuntu) "XFCE desktop - system icons themselves arrange off the screen" [High,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/143495902:04
segaI've got another question that hopefully someone can answer. I installed xubuntu via USB like 30 mins ago. I chose the option to delete all existing HDD contents and run xubuntu as my primary OS. However, when I reboot my PC, "windows boot manager" is still listed as a boot option in BIOS. Why is this still listed as an option?02:05
segathanks for the answers <krytarik> and <ubottu>02:06
GefilteFishI FIXED IT02:22
nomicgood02:22
holsteini found a way to address my uefi hardware..02:23
GefilteFishGuys02:46
GefilteFishHow do you create an efi drive02:46
GefilteFishOr better yet. What files go in the /boot/efi folder02:47
holsteinusually, the hardware manufacturer will have some specific requirements about what the hardware needs02:47
holstein!uefi02:47
ubottuUEFI is a specification that defines a software interface between an operating system and platform firmware. It is meant as a replacement for the BIOS. For information on how to set up and install Ubuntu and its derivatives on UEFI machines please read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI02:47
nomicefi?02:47
nomicisn't a drive02:47
nomicefi is a bios security 'feature'02:47
holsteinmine is a partition..02:48
GefilteFishI meant partition02:49
holsteini didnt actually personally choose what went there.. i like the installer do what it needed02:49
GefilteFishOk i made it in gparted and gave it a boot flag02:49
holsteinand, with ubuntu 15.o4, it just "magically" did it02:49
GefilteFishHolstein im trying to manually do it. I know that02:50
holsteinbut, if i were going to blow windows out off this machine, and i might, i would just set the bios to legacy, and have the older setup im used to02:50
holsteinGefilteFish: sure.. its just that, the manufacturer, AFAIK, can have specific things the machine is "expecting"02:50
holsteinGefilteFish: im not sure that you and i are *allowed* to know what that is.. but i could be wrong02:50
holsteinim not sure that getting "signed" efi partition data like that is accepted is casual02:51
holsteinthat is accepted*02:51
GefilteFish....02:51
holsteinyou can also use #ubuntu, and may find more users with that type of hardware there02:52
holsteinwhatever works in ubuntu for your hardware and that kernel should "just magically work" with xubuntu02:52
GefilteFishI finally got into my OS but if i turn off my pc I'll be back at the "boot device not found 3f0 screen02:52
holsteinyup, i had lots of that, as well02:53
holsteini ended up in a bios mode that boots both windows and ubuntu02:53
GefilteFishOk different question then. Is there a terminal command that reinstalls missing xubuntu files?02:54
holsteinnot "magically"02:54
GefilteFishOr a way to reinstall xubuntu from terminal02:54
holsteinGefilteFish: there are many ways to install files02:54
holsteinxubuntu? or xfce? or what?02:54
GefilteFishWow.02:54
GefilteFishSo can you actually help me or not03:04
GefilteFishIf you dont know how just say that.03:04
holsteinGefilteFish: a volunteer may be able to help here, sure.. you can also try #ubuntu, as i said, since, your issue is not xubuntu/xfce specific03:06
GefilteFishI am on Xubuntu...03:07
holsteinGefilteFish: yup.. ubuntu running xfce, with a efi question.. xubuntu *is* ubuntu, and im not trying to kick you out of here, im just stating that you literally can be the only person runing xubuntu on that specific hardware03:08
holsteincould be, you can find another user with that hardware in #ubuntu, and *anything* related, will work in xubuntu.. kernel level, grub, etc.. its all the same03:08
GefilteFishAll im trying to figure out is what files go inside /boot/efi/ because mine is empty and im trying to rebuild my partition manually.03:11
holsteinGefilteFish: sure, and on mine, its specific to dell03:12
holsteinGefilteFish: and, the installer "just did it" for me.. otherwise, i would have had to ask dell, or bypass it in the bios, which also worked03:12
holsteinthose are signed, for security.. its not something that can be causally made03:13

xubuntu11wI was just reading an article on this website called the "easy linux tips project" and read this tip: "Never remove any application that's part of the default installation of Ubuntu"03:26
xubuntu11wIs this true? I ask because I've removed most of the default software on xubuntu and replaced it with my preffered software03:27
holsteinyou can alwasy do what you like03:27
holsteinbut, i think if those are "beginner tips", then, since, all you do is free up a little hard drive space, and you can run into issues with things wanting to remove other things.. etc..03:28
xubuntu11wThe author notes that "When you remove a default application, you run a risk of seriously damaging the system."03:28
Hundxubuntu11w: It's okay.03:29
xubuntu11wI don't understand how removing default could pose a threat03:29
xubuntu11w*default software03:29
HundIt doesn't.03:29
xubuntu11wok, that's what i had assumed03:29
holsteinxubuntu11w: as i said, it can offer to remove other things.. thats all.. a beginner could run into issues03:29
xubuntu11wI see03:29
xubuntu11wThanks03:29

ChocolateraineuGood afternoon, I'm having some issues with graphic driver18:02
ChocolateraineuCard: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] RV350 [Radeon 9550]18:02
Chocolateraineu           X.Org: 1.16.0 drivers: ati,vesa,radeon FAILED: fbdev Resolution: 1280x1024@0.0hz18:02
Chocolateraineu           GLX Renderer: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.5, 128 bits) GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 10.3.218:02
ChocolateraineuCan't change resolution/refresh rate, sometimes screen goes too yellow, quite weird.18:03
xubuntu70wI want to remove the default app "mail reader," but if i do, the following items must also be removed: file manager for xfce, thunar extension for volummes managment, panel for xfce desktop environment, xfce terminal emulator, xfce desktop background, icons, and root, and verve (command line) plugin for xfce18:24
bazhangare you tight on hdd space18:25
xubuntu70wSome of those seem like necessary system plugins / apps, which is keeping me from clicking delete18:25
xubuntu70wno i'm not18:25
bazhangwhat will be used in lieu of that18:25
Unit193How about not using whatever UI that is and just remove thunderbird then?18:25
xubuntu70wYeah I was planning on just using thunderbird, so I wanted to remove mail reader because it won't be used18:26
* Unit193 scratches head.18:26
xubuntu70wAm I not making sense18:26
Unit193What is 'mail reader'?18:27
xubuntu70wActually18:27
xubuntu70wIt's simply a shortcut to the default mail application18:27
xubuntu70wmy bad18:27
Unit193So, you were trying to remove exo.18:28
xubuntu70wI guess it serves the same function as the "internet" shortcut seen on context meenuus18:28
xubuntu70w*menus18:28
xubuntu70wIf you right click on thee desktop aand go to applications, you should see "internet" and "mail reader" shortcuts at the top of the menu18:29
xubuntu70wI don't need to use either of them, so I wanted to remove them from the software center. But it looks like you have to remove other system components/ apps as well.18:30
xubuntu70wI don't know whether or not those apps I listed above are safe to remove18:30
elfywhat you are describing is not any different than the shortcuts elsewhere18:30
Unit193How about you use a menu editor and remove them?18:31
elfyremoving firefox and thunderbird won'tafaik remove those menu entries18:31
Unit193Mope.18:31
xubuntu70wLet me try the menu editor18:31
xubuntu70wmenu editor works18:33
xubuntu70wthanks, I used the "hide" option18:33
bazhang!yay18:33
ubottuGlad you made it! :-)18:33
xubuntu70wIs there an easy way to configure the applications menu so that it has a different layout?18:34
xubuntu70wFor example, can I eliminate the shortcuts on the left side and simply have the menu show all of the applications in one consolidated list?18:35
xanguayou mean the classic menu¿18:36
xubuntu70wyes18:36
xubuntu70wWell, I didn't know that was an option, but I would like to try it18:37
xubuntu70wFigured it out18:42
win95Anyone know if you can modify or change the play/pause controls within the volume tab on panel?21:38
win95https://www.dropbox.com/s/bbblw358ma5efnb/Screenshot_2015-05-17_17-20-24.png?dl=021:39
win95That link shows what I'm talking about (in the top right corner)21:39
knomewin95, not without changing the code21:41
win95thanks knome21:41
win95Where can I provide suggestions for future updates and changes?21:41
knomein launchpad, the ubuntu bug tracker21:42
win95alright, thanks again21:44
win95I'm curious, how does software deletion differ from windows operating systems? Does the xubuntu file system organize software into program files like windows? For example, does libreoffice writer have a specific folder location in the file system which contains all of the software components?22:14
