tetamushaHey guys, I'm having trouble setting up sound via HDMI04:14
tetamushaI just installed Xubuntu 15.04 and I have my laptop connected to a display via HDMI. During the live session (while I was installing the OS) sound worked fine, but after installing Xubuntu and rebooting the laptop, sound didn't work anymore in my display.04:15
tetamushaThis is the output of aplay -l:04:15
tetamusha**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **** card 1: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC3234 Analog [ALC3234 Analog]   Subdevices: 1/1   Subdevice #0: subdevice #004:16
holsteinno sound? or, sound from HDMI doesnt work?04:16
tetamushaThe sound works through my laptop speakers04:18
tetamushaBut not in my HDMI monitor04:18
holsteinthe difference, as i read, is that you took updates during the install, and an update could be breaking the hdmi audio out04:19
holsteini would install pavucontrol, and check routing manually04:19
holsteinmake sure soemthing you *know* is playing in the laptop speakers is routed to hdmi04:19
tetamushaI didn't select the option to install updates during install, and the HDMI monitor does not show up in pavucontrol04:20
holsteintetamusha: if you didnt, then i may go the other way with it, and see that you *do* have all updates applied, and reboot04:21
tetamushaalright, gimme a few minutes then04:22

DJJefffor vlc07:07
ornjDoes not play DVD.07:07
DJJeffalso xangua no need to repeat that07:07
ornjGave me same thing that, now, I remember xine and Totem did (I gave up on this project a couple wks back before coming back to it)07:07
ornjwhere it would, like, spin up the disk, start to play, then stop; counter would go blank07:08
DJJefftry a seperate dvd ?07:08
ornjand IIRC it would bring up the first frame of the disc for a split second in one of those other players.07:08
ornjYes; regardless of title.07:08
ornjWhich logs?07:08
DJJeffas xangua has reposted you may need to install the restricted extras package07:08

xanguasight...07:09
ornjAlso verified regionset, which had been suggested to me before07:10
ornjSo merely installing libdvdread4 isn't enough?07:10
DJJeffnow if xangua has a ! command to fix my issue07:10
xanguahow about both you take some time to read what the bot actually suggest¿07:10
DJJeffwould start singing and dancing07:11
xanguaornj: yes, it's not enought. Did you run the script?07:11
DJJeffbut oh no its never a good idea to run apps as root let alone theme them07:11
ornjThank you, xangua, but if you'd read me, you'd know that the first thing I'd said was that I've already been to the wiki and read it over, several times.07:11
xanguaornj: did you run the script after installing libdvdread4¿07:12
DJJeffornj: this sounds like a lot of work07:12
DJJeffornj: on a fresh clean install of xubuntu 14.04 I could play dvd with vlc07:13
ornjAnd what if I do not want e.g. Microsoft fonts?07:13
xanguano, you can't07:13
DJJeffworked for me07:14

ornjAh - restarted VLC - seems to be working07:15
DJJeffoh07:15
ornjThank you, xangua  <307:15

DJJeffbecause I tried to change the theme for the root user07:17
DJJeff root@xubuntu:~# gtk-theme-switch207:17
ornjOOOH  :707:17
ornjIt's root's job to be boring07:17

DJJeffgnome was awesome until they went derp07:19
DJJeffwith unity07:19
DJJeffso I removed unity and install xfce07:19
DJJeffbeen a nightmare ever since07:20
cfhowlettDJJeff, of course.  unity is very well integrated in ubuntu.  don't like, install xubuntu instead.  removing unity = break ubuntu07:20
DJJeffXubuntu is just ubuntu with Xfce07:20
DJJeffalready know this07:21
cfhowlettDJJeff, I KNOW that.  but removing unity from ubuntu will break things.07:21
ornj(Good to know, cfh, thanks)07:21
DJJeffeven gtk related things?07:22
DJJefflike themes?07:22
DJJeffwhich was my issue07:22
DJJeff*shrugs*07:22
xanguathere were this pureubuntu, purexubuntu, purekubuntu post but they are outdated07:22
cfhowlettxangua, very much outdated.  also: to my knowledge no one has written a definitive (remove unity) tutorial that doesn't break things.07:23
DJJefflol07:24
ornjThanks again, xangua.  :)07:29
DJJefflol07:30
DJJeffyes I did not help at all07:30
DJJeffsuggesting vlc and all07:30
* DJJeff gives ornj the finger07:31

DJJeffoh I get it now08:07
DJJeffchanging the theme for root08:07
DJJeffcaused root xfwm4 to crash08:07
DJJeffwhich is why the few terminal windows running as root are all messed08:07
DJJeffodd that zenmap and wireshark did not mess up08:08
DJJeffI could not really reproduce this issue in a fresh copy in a VM08:08
DJJeffoh wait yes I can08:10
DJJeffeven changing the theme for a normal user using gtk-theme-switch2 causes xfwm4 to crash08:11
jarnosI have problem with light-locker and dm-tool. If I don't enable light-locker, I can not use dm-tool to run guest session safely. If I use light-locker, command "xflock4 && xfce4-session-logout -s" fails sometimes, as the latter command requires authorization sometimes. This is in ubuntu-studio 14.04.12:51

xubuntu61whello19:16
knomehello19:16
xubuntu40wi just reinstalled ubuntu 14 and installed then xubuntu but this time it looks strangly old. with that black curvy mouse instead the triangle one. I can not find a solution online why that is19:18
knomedid you run the xubuntu session, not the xfce one?19:19
xubuntu40wyes19:20
knomehow did you install xubuntu?19:20
xubuntu40wfrom dvd, erase full harddrive19:20
knomeso you didn't install ubuntu and then xubuntu on top of it, but just xubuntu?19:21
xubuntu40wah sorry, mistake. no. i installed ubuntu 14 fresh and new and installed i(or on top) xubuntu by terminal19:22
knomehow?19:22
knome(btw, there is no "ubuntu 14", it's either 14.04 or 14.10)19:22
xubuntu40w.0419:22
xubuntu40wwith this command: sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop19:23
xubuntu40wthen restart and I got that ugly old looking xubuntu. do not know why I not have the new nice look19:26
xanguachange the theme¿19:27
xubuntu40whow do i do that?19:28
xubuntu40w.... strange is, that I installed it the same way a half year ago and got a totally different result19:28
brainwash_please upload a screenshot, so that we know what you are talking about19:29
xubuntu40wwith a very unfunctional whiskers menu ...19:29
xubuntu40walright19:29
xanguaopen your xfce settings¿19:29
xubuntu40wit looks like this:19:33
xubuntu40whttps://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3xSTr2gkxtqMUVvZkY2N3FYVEE/view?usp=sharing19:33
xubuntu40wbut should look like this:19:34
xubuntu40whttp://distrowatch.com/images/cgfjoewdlbc/xubuntu.png19:34
xanguaso make it look like that19:34
xubuntu40wthere comes the problem. i do not know how. last time it was already like that19:35
knomexubuntu40w, that looks like you are running the xfce session19:35
xubuntu40wbut it is the xubuntu session19:36
xubuntu40wi tired both19:36
knomeif you create a new user and run the xubuntu session, what happens?19:36
xanguaright clic, add whisker menu19:37
brainwash_you have to remove ~/.config/xfce4 and then relog into the xubuntu session19:37
xubuntu40wok, I try that19:39
xubuntu40wshould i remove the whole folder?19:39
xanguaor just add the whisker menu...19:40
brainwash_yes, renaming it works too19:40
xanguaor play with it and configure it as you like19:41
brainwash_xangua: no, the wants the default xubuntu panel/desktop/etc setup19:41
knomexangua, that isn't the complete solution19:41
brainwash_he wants19:41
xanguaobviously reseting the config...on a 14.04 install...won't bring the 15.04 settings19:41
knomexangua, nobody said anything about 15.04 settings19:42
knomei'm confused where you picked that one up19:42
xanguacome one, he showed us a picture....of the default 15.04 appearence and he just wants to make it look like that19:42
xubuntu40wthat images comes close to what I had before. or does only 15.04 looks like that?19:43
knomexubuntu40w, which xubuntu version were you running before?19:43
xanguayou can make it look like that, you can make it look like you want19:43
xubuntu40wi ran on ubuntu 14.04 sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop the first time and got the desired appearance. did the same now with a different result19:45
knomexubuntu40w, then do what brainwash_ suggested19:45
xangua:/19:45
knomeor you can do what xangua suggested, but it's a lot more work19:45
xanguaoh come one19:45
knomeand might not easily give you the results you actually want19:46
xubuntu40walright, I try that and might, but hopefully not, come back here.19:46
xubuntu40wbig thanks already for your help19:46
knomexangua, the default settings are more than just the panel configuration19:46
xangua14.04 came with a second tiny panel, 15.04 came with whisker menu and just one panel, 10.04 came looking just like gnome did with two wide panels19:47
knomexangua, ...and a lot more configuration19:48
xanguaaggg19:48
krytarikxangua: For that matter: http://xubuntu.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/1404_whisker.png19:48
vivid-noexechi, can 15.04 get noexec set for automounted vfat drives? 12.04 was fine, now my text files are executable when take from a flash.19:50
xubuntu40wthat was it. now I got the desired look. big thanks for your help19:52

j_charronI have a question regarding xscreensaver, a standard package on this distribution.23:04
holsteinyup.. ask, and a volunteer may assist..23:05
bazhang!info light-locker23:05
ubottulight-locker (source: light-locker): simple screen locker for lightDM display manager. In component universe, is optional. Version 1.6.0-0ubuntu2 (vivid), package size 65 kB, installed size 1024 kB23:05
bazhangI'd use that instead j_charron23:06
j_charronWell, I had hoped to use the bsod screensaver. Unfortunately, it's not selectable. It's listed there, and I'm kind of confused as to why I can't actually use it.23:06
j_charronI'll check that one out23:06
j_charronso if I download the source off his website and extract the shizzle23:15
knomej_charron, then you should ask for support from the author23:16
holsteinthey may provide a simple .deb file or offer a PPA already for ubuntu23:17
j_charronhow does someone compile a c file?23:19
j_charronmakepkg?23:19
j_charronmakefile?23:19
j_charrongah this is all so new23:19
knomesounds like you are taking on a huge task just to get... a new screensaver23:19
knomethe answer is: depends on the build system the author is using23:20
DJJeffoiu, Chrome Version 43.0.2357.81 (64-bit)23:31
DJJeffoiu, the icon is back23:31
j_charronsolution found!23:56
j_charronapparently it is a readily available package. xscreensaver-screensaver-bsod23:56
