[04:38] More almal [05:36] hi barrydk mazal inetpro and others [05:37] More oom === andrewlsd is now known as mciverza [06:13] here is something for the python peeps https://bugs.python.org/issue23275 [06:27] good mornings everyone [06:27] morning inetpro [06:30] Morning Kilos, inetpro [06:30] hi mciverza nice to see you here so early [06:30] hi Kilos [06:30] oh and hi mciverza [06:31] Thanks Kilos, I'm running around trying to sort out a domain registration where the DNS servers and original mail account by which the domain was registered no longer exist. [06:31] oh my, how can things just no longer exist [06:31] non payment? [06:33] nope. I registered a .nom.za domain when I worked for a company.... and I used my company email address to register it. That email address no longer exists, and neither do the DNS servers used in the registration. [06:34] oh my [06:34] lolz. [06:34] good luck [06:35] thanks, going to lurk. [06:35] ok [06:36] Kilos, regarding last night's "at" discussion. [06:36] oh yes [06:36] at 00:10 screen -d 'apt-get upgrade -y' [06:37] wow cool ty [06:37] would allow you to reconnect and see what apt is doing if you needed to. [06:37] coz I often have connectivity issues, I usually do apt-get -dy upgrade && apt-get upgrade [06:37] so that it downloads all the packages, and if that is successful, it runs the actual upgrade. [06:38] mciverza: oh wow, I like your solution [06:38] great ty, i sat up and upgraded as usual [06:38] nobody's heard up unattended-upgrades then i guess? [06:38] *"heard of" :-o [06:39] haha, hi ThatGraemeGuy [06:39] 'lo :) [06:40] hi ThatGraemeGuy i upgrade only when i have night surfer data, so sometimes weeks with no upgrading [06:40] ThatGraemeGuy: I guess it's about time that we just trust update to not break anything :-) [06:40] oh right [06:41] inetpro: we run unattended-upgrades, that ought to speak to its stability somewhat [06:41] thousands of servers that update most things seamlessly every day [06:41] there's a few things that don't auto-update [06:42] there's a few things that require intervention [06:42] but for a desktop, no reason to bother with package filtering [06:42] yes, desktop should be fine in most cases [06:43] inetpro zerlgi is back [06:43] Kilos: ? [06:43] just trhese nick changes get me confussed [06:43] oh my have i got it wrong [06:44] isnt mciverza zerlgi === mciverza is now known as zerlgi === zerlgi is now known as andrewlsd [06:46] kilos, yes. that is correct [06:46] see [06:46] inetpro ^^ [06:46] sjoe maak my kop draai [06:51] " I usually do apt-get -dy upgrade && apt-get upgrade " Musn't the first one be update instead of upgrade ? Or am I missing something ? [06:53] would be nice if one could setup synaptic to upgrade at 0.05 [06:54] My biggest problem is with loadshedding I don't want to leave my equipment on [06:54] after 10pm its normally safe [06:57] Kilos: you can make a cron job that runs the apt commands you need for upgrading [06:57] trying to schedule GUI tools..... let me not comment rather :-p [06:57] lol i looked at that ThatGraemeGuy , i think using at is easier for me [06:58] * ThatGraemeGuy sighs incredibly deeply [06:58] ThatGraemeGuy: bite your tongue :-) [06:58] lol [06:59] cron is easier for me that at [06:59] good morning [06:59] hi magespawn [06:59] than* [06:59] Morning magespawn [07:00] Kilos: maybe you just need to do a little more homework [07:00] and please don't even mention synaptic [07:01] nono man too much, i have got a hackergotchi now i gotta put that on the blog, and planet somehow [07:01] I now did that sudo apt-get -dy update && sudo apt-get upgrade [07:02] But it stood still on the "yes" prompt [07:02] Do I short a -y somewhere ? [07:02] synaptic is an efficient tool for beginners and can fix broken packages and do all upgrades [07:02] mazal: man apt-get [07:03] ai! [07:03] apt-get -dy **upgrade** [07:03] and man bash [07:03] Must both be upgrade ? [07:03] (not meaning to shout, just emphasize) [07:04] I don't understand why both must be upgrade ? Why musn't an update run first ? [07:06] mazal: you've got it the wrong way round [07:06] mazal: the -y should be on upgrade, not update [07:07] morning superfly [07:07] yeah, the point of the "apt-get -dy upgrade && apt-get upgrade" [07:07] was to download the packages (which is what -dy will do) and only then run the actual upgrade [07:07] as opposed to apt-get update && apt-get upgrade [07:08] which will refresh the package list and then run the upgrade. [07:08] So there should actually be 3 commands [07:08] mazal, yes [07:08] either way, probably "unattended-upgrade" is more useful. [07:10] So I would put for example "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -dy upgrade && sudo apt-get upgrade" [07:16] How do one get past the prompt for sudo password if you were to put unattended upgrades in a cron script ? [07:20] add it to the root cron and not to the user cron, then sudo is not needed inside the script [07:21] alternative, is to edit the sudo config and configue the commands in the script to not require password when sudo is used on those specific commands [07:21] but root cron is easier [07:22] are there any security risks with running cron scripts as root? [07:23] only if you dont know what the script does [07:23] or if the script reads data from files that any user can edit [07:27] k thanx [07:29] +1 TinuvaMac [07:31] Maaz andrewlsd ++ [07:31] Maaz TinuvaMac ++ [07:31] thanks for the lesson [07:32] they clever these peeps hey magespawn [07:32] you think im on this channel for the coffee [07:37] morning all [07:37] hi pieter2627 [07:40] haha got me a gotchi and you can see i got my winter wool on face [07:40] http://kilosubuntu.blogspot.com [07:42] Nice oom ;) [07:45] sien jy daai prent [07:45] dis wat hulle n hackergotchi noem [07:45] dunno why [07:48] ai! http://is.gd/B9DpnR [08:02] hi MaNI [08:03] hi [08:27] Kilos: maybe put links to various ubuntu sites etc with that blog post [08:40] hi all [08:40] hi Kilos [08:43] hi georgelappies [08:43] how are you doing today? [10:33] I don't think so. I did offer my help with SFD that was perhaps mentioned last night [10:34] Where can I find the minutes? [10:37] Oh tuksLUG [10:38] i just remembered someone said you were going to do something [10:38] Yes, looked at the minutes now [10:38] phew major rukkus between the ubuntu comunity council and the kubuntu council [10:38] this is going to get ugly [10:38] How so nlsthzn ? [10:38] well it is already actually [10:38] very ugly [10:39] Share the gossip [10:39] planet.ubuntu.com [10:39] you will see the posts [10:39] hey it already has its own hashtag [10:39] #wiunning [10:39] #winning [10:39] its been going for weeks in the lists [10:39] :p [10:40] shame man [10:40] I am still reading and personally I am getting pretty pissed off about the whole thing [10:40] this will be the second council I believe is dysfunctinal [10:41] lots to read to get up to scratch with the whole episode [10:41] yup [10:41] but going on the initial actions... not good [10:42] there are ways of doing things [10:42] sad though [10:43] hopefully they sort their differences [10:43] i love kubuntu [10:43] hopefully [10:44] maybe peeps are just a bit hot tempered [10:45] nope [10:46] enough bull and people react [10:49] DalekSec, i c u [10:52] Greetings [10:52] hi drazoro [10:52] hi drazoro [10:54] Hi Kilos, Hi magespawn [10:55] That is a very demonstrative reason why I don't want to get involved in anything [10:55] haha [10:56] haha [10:56] we dont fight here man [10:56] Trixar or something who is here already hates me :P [10:56] So no thank you [10:57] he isnt here often [10:57] gremble: the key is to remove the ego from the equation, if you can do that and others can too, then you are sorted [10:57] ^ if you can show me a group of people that can do that, I will have found the people I want to be the next world leaders [10:58] instead of peeps hashing about problems its way better to hash about solutions [10:59] uh oh kenya server crashed again [10:59] gremble: true [11:00] only those who do not want to be the leaders should get the job, bit like the president of the galaxy [11:00] ^ [11:01] I was just about to say that [11:01] hah [11:01] Well, the president of the galaxy bit was all yours :P [11:01] haha [11:01] any recommendations for a linux rdp client? Most people want all kinds of expensive things like clothes, shoes, food, etc. I just want books [11:09] Contrary to popular belief though, it is not more comfortanle to cry in a lamborgini than an uno [11:10] Study for Differential Equations or write a scheme interpreter.... choices [11:11] study [11:11] Yeeees.
