holsteinornj: hmmm. i dont recall it having it.. whats it doing?01:49
ornjwell... whatever service it uses to look up track titles01:53
holsteinwell, its all open, so, the answer is always yes, but, i havent noticed it looking up anything for me01:53
ornj'cause it certainly ain't gettin' em from me!01:53
holsteinornj: could be getting information from the track it self01:54
holsteinornj: disable network connection, put in new cd..01:54
ornjheh01:54
ornjReally? So I have to shut off my Internets?01:54
holstein?01:54
ornjOf course, as soon as I turn it back on...01:54
holsteinornj: no.. im saying, *test* this, by doing that.. disable the network, put in a CD that you havent used yet01:54
ornjIn fact, it says "retrieving" or something while it is pulling the new names01:55
holsteinthen, if the info comes up, its baked in the track. if it doenst, then, reconnect and see if it get the information01:55
ornjI know what you're saying. It gets them off the 'Net.01:55
holsteinornj: sure.. its just that, is it off the net?01:55
holsteinlets see.. its probably the ccdb plugin.. it comes in with the pacakge01:57
holsteinlet me just open it and see how to disable..01:57
ornjtries to use cddb://01:57
ornj"Error consulting CDDB server: Unknown host name"01:57
ornjThank you01:57
holsteini would look under "plugins" in the menu01:58
holsteinpersonally, i would just diable them all, since you are trying to get it to do less01:58
holsteinyou'll then be able to see that its not reaching cddb, and add back what you need, if anything01:59
ornjWell, plugins also do things like play everything02:04
holsteinornj: sure. so, you can test.. and put back what you need02:05
ornjAnd I also appear to have broken all my existing playlists, which kind of sucks02:05
holsteinornj: i dont have a CD player here, handy.. nor a CD to test for you02:05
ornjWhat a giant pain in the balls02:05
ornjSo, in short, "I don't know [if there is one]."02:05
ornjWell, thanks anyway02:05
holstein?02:06
holsteinornj: are you saying, that im trying to say, i dont know that there is a "Fix"?02:06
holsteinanyways, i dont think you'll have any issue isolating what the plugins do..02:06
holsteinif i had a CD here, and an optical drive, handy, id just do it real quick, and let you know which one is it02:07
ornjUGH02:08
ornjFound it02:08
ornjAfter disabling EVERYTHING02:08
holsteinyup. thats what i would have had to do.. just disable them, and see what is waht02:09
holsteinwhat*02:09
ornjYeah, well02:09
ornjno02:09
holsteinand, now you know02:09
ornjbecause you disable the Audio CD plugin, you can't play CDs02:09
holsteinright. so, you add that one back..02:09
ornjyou enable it, you have your 'Net connected, it retrieves titles02:09
ornjNo Audio CD plugin - no sound. Audio CD plugin - sound+titles.02:10
holsteinsure.. so, grab/extract the audio, leave disabled.. ask the developers.. use another player like vlc.. etc02:10
holsteinmaybe there is an audio cd playback only version.. anyways.. you can always just disable the network, and play the cd02:11
ornjWhat you have to do is go into the Preferences FOR THAT SPECIFIC plugin02:11
holsteinwhats the issue with cddb access?02:11
ornjand uncheck "Use CDDB."02:11
holsteinright.. sounds like thats what you need.. enjoy, then02:12
ornj:)02:12
ornjDanke02:12
ornjBecause I see no reason to share my listening habits and I usually have to go in to fix spelling/capitalization/stupid genre classification/etc. issues anyway.02:15
holsteinno one will make you use it.. i think you are assuming they take anything from you.. but, disable what you like02:17
ornjNo, no one "makes" me use it, but it's clearly a giant, obfuscated pain to disable.02:18
ornjYou're telling me freedb.org keeps *no* logs of who queries the server for what?02:18
ornjOK, wait02:20
ornjafter all this is Audacious not even what I want to rip to FLAC/Vorbis?02:21
holsteinno. im not saying that.. im saying, you may be assuming they are.. and that you also are free to not use the service02:22
holsteini use soundconverter.. i'll rip to lossless something.. and convert to what i need02:23
holstein!info soundconverter02:23
ubottusoundconverter (source: soundconverter): GNOME application to convert audio files into other formats. In component universe, is optional. Version 2.1.5-1 (vivid), package size 102 kB, installed size 1097 kB02:23
ornjWait, you rip to a lossless format, then convert from that?02:24
holsteincorrect.. something that matches the quality of the source02:25
holsteinlossless 16/44.1 for example.. wav.. for CD.. then, i convert to what i want from there02:25
ornjYou use Soundconverter to rip as well?02:26
holsteinno.. its not a ripper02:26
holsteinits a converter02:26
ornjRight, so... I'm still... The question was what to rip with.02:26
holsteinhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/CDRipping02:26
* ornj shrugs, goes off to google.02:27
holsteini dont deal with CD's anymore02:27
holsteinbut, when i did, i used that appliation ^02:27
ornjI'm a little shocked Ubuntu Studio doesn't seem to come with a tool for this.02:27
Unit193I think I used sound-juicer last time.02:28
holstein!info sound-juicer02:28
ubottusound-juicer (source: sound-juicer): GNOME CD Ripper. In component universe, is optional. Version 3.14.0-1build1 (vivid), package size 1362 kB, installed size 4710 kB02:28
ornjYes; it doesn't come installed.02:29
ornjOdd.02:29
holsteinits in the repos.. easy to add02:29
holsteinubuntustudio is not for that.. not aiming for audio consumption02:29
holsteinits more setup for creating audio files, and art.. not consuming the art..02:29
ornj. . .02:29
holsteinby default, its not intended to be a "cd ripping station"02:30
ornjFair enough, I suppose.02:30
ornj*lol*02:30
ornjI didn't think extracting audio tracks from a CD turned my studio setup into a "CD ripping station."02:30
ornjForgot I had cdrdao on this thing.02:32
Unit193OK?  Bye?02:32
holstein"im shocked ubuntustudio isnt catered for my complete needs, out of the box" ;)02:32
holsteinanyways.. new musescore! ..looks slick02:33
Unit193Heh, well I don't do a lot.  Mine tends to be live streaming, and the client side of that is Windows anyway.  So while I have Icecast2 on the server, butt is on the Windows computer.  Of course, Linux could use darkice, butt or even something else.02:34
germanhow can i run python in ubuntu studio?03:48

Tooncenatorholstein - It works! Can't believe how simple the solution turned out to be. I totally forgot that in the same setup where I specified the the soundcard to use, that you could specify both the Input AND the output! lol. So I changed the output to the other chip inside the m-audio box (it has two), and I'm good to go! Thanks again for your help and patience!05:15
Tooncenator*headsmack* + sigh of relief05:16

holsteinTooncenator: good to hear15:35
holsteinyes, thats why i do, and suggest, using a live iso, to remove any little config settings like that from the equation15:36
holsteinone can easily see how a stock environment works, without "breaking" the current installation15:36
holsteinand in many cases, copy, or save config settings that are working15:36
