Noob137Realtek's website provided a source you can download and compile for the ALC892, but it doesn't compile and even running configure seems to somehow b0rk the system.00:03

Guest97914hi, need to figure out why I cant seem to run a .jar file as an executable?00:46
Guest97914im in 14.10 kubuntu00:47
Guest97914actually in 15.0400:48
Guest97914when I change properties on the jar and make it exec.. it does not work .. still wants to open it with ark00:48
Guest97914if I list java as the prefered app.. it shows a bouncing bean.. like it trying to run it.. but no00:49
Guest97914does kubuntu have a jre installed by default?00:55
mparilloFor minecraft for my daughter, I made a shell script to call java.01:01
EtriaphGuest97914: open-jdk should be installed by default.01:03
EtriaphGuest97914: java -jar <file.jar>01:03
EtriaphI would suggest #java for details on how to create an executable jar, it's out of scope here.01:07
Guest97914yeah.. dont think open-jdk will work01:07
EtriaphGuest97914: Oracle has packages for Ubuntu.01:08
Guest97914I am trying to add software source to Muon .. but not working01:08
Guest97914found this issue in KDE faq01:08
Guest97914tells me how to change muon.. but in older version.01:08
Guest97914I have added the souce.. but it does not seem to be getting to the repository01:09
Etriaphhttp://askubuntu.com/questions/521145/how-to-install-oracle-java-on-ubuntu-14-0401:09
EtriaphDid you do apt update?01:09
Guest97914yep.. thats the one I am looking at01:09
EtriaphI installed JDK 8 using those instructions for RubyMine01:09
Guest97914using gui software center01:10
EtriaphI haven't used Muon to add sources.01:10
EtriaphClick Add and enter: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/webupd8team/java/ubuntu vivid main01:11
Guest97914im sorry I dont understand your last statement click add where?01:14
EtriaphIn Muon Discover, go to Sources at the top then 'Configure Software Sources' in the top right01:14
EtriaphIt'll prompt you for your password.01:15
Guest97914yep past that01:15
EtriaphOnce entered, click on the 'Other Software' tab01:15
EtriaphAt the bottom there's a button to 'Add...'01:15
EtriaphClick on that then enter the text: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/webupd8team/java/ubuntu vivid main01:16
Guest97914got it.01:16
Guest97914when I add a source.. it also adds a 2nd entry with (Source Code) do I tick that?01:16
EtriaphThat's up to you01:16
EtriaphI don't do it.01:16
Guest97914k01:16
EtriaphOK, now at a console, type: sudo apt update01:17
Guest97914how do I know if the source is successfully added?01:17
EtriaphUh... well I'm assuming it would throw an error if not, but look in the list it'll be there.01:17
EtriaphDoing the: sudo apt update01:17
Etriaphstep will tell you if there's an issue with the PPA01:17
Guest97914you mean in a term?01:18
EtriaphYes01:18
Guest97914doing that now01:18
EtriaphOnce that's done do: sudo apt-get install oracle-java8-installer01:19
Guest97914done.. says 1 pkg updatable.. but Muon was telling me that too.01:19
EtriaphIs this a JAR you created?01:19
Guest97914I tried to search for update-sun-jre which I was told was the name I want.. but no find in Muon01:20
Guest97914no.. minecraft01:20
Etriaphsudo apt-get install oracle-java8-installer01:20
EtriaphThat'll get you the latestish version of Java01:20
EtriaphFor me, I can click on a JAR file and it just executes, I'm using that package as my Java version in /etc/alternatives01:21
Guest97914ok.. working.. why is this so hard to do in Muon?01:21
EtriaphIt's not, but you have to be looking for the correct package name01:21
EtriaphI prefer to do all package management on the console.01:22
EtriaphI boot up Muon when I want to browse around for a while.01:22
Guest97914no matter what search I use in Muon Oracle or java8.. it does not fine it01:23
Noob137Yeah, I prefer sudo apt-get because you can see the inner goings on if it's relevant.01:23
Guest97914yep I can do it.. just bothers me that after so many years a pkg manager still seems to be a work in progress01:24
EtriaphGuest97914: Muon is relatively new01:25
Noob137Heh.  Windows doesn't even have a central package manager.  Even systems like Steam have huge support issues because of the variety of weirdness that happens.01:25
EtriaphNoob137: Yup, and Steam needs to start providing support for partitioning applications on multiple drives too.01:26
Guest97914install done. how do I test?01:26
* Etriaph has way too many steam games01:26
EtriaphGuest97914: java -version01:26
Guest97914lol01:26
EtriaphShould come up as Oracle Java 801:26
Etriaphjava version "1.8.0_45" for me01:26
Guest97914yeah.. showing up in the apps now too01:27
EtriaphYou should just be able to double-click (or single-click if you have it at default) the JAR now01:27
Guest97914yep.. same here01:27
EtriaphIf it still doesn't execute like that, you may have to logout for the environment variables to take.01:28
Guest97914going to log out.. still not working01:30
Noob137Any idea on how to get HDMI to show up as a sound device in Phonon Audio and Video settings?01:31
Noob137I'm using HDMI/TV right now as my display, and it's an Asus Z97-A with a Realtek ALC89201:32
EtriaphNoob137: It's configured in System Settings -> Multimedia01:34
Noob137Yes, except HDMI doesn't show up as an option there, even though I'm using it.01:34
Noob137For video01:34
EtriaphIs the HDMI audio working?01:35
EtriaphAre you just trying to setup video?01:35
Noob137HDMI audio doesn't work.  It doesn't show up in aplay -L or settings.01:35
Noob137I already have video, and I'm using it now to type.01:36
Noob137:)01:36
EtriaphOK, System Settings -> Multimedia is definitely where you'd specify the device, but if it doesn't show in the list of devices there...01:37
Noob137Is there a way to reinstall/fix phonon, alsa-utils, etc., just to see if it's a software issue?01:38
EtriaphYou *can*01:38
EtriaphWhat kind of HDMI card is it?01:38
Noob137Well, it's an HDMI port on the Asus Z97-A, the sound card is a Realtek ALC89201:39
Noob137which is mobo onboard sound.01:40
Noob137I can basically only get sound on a single Line Out 3.5mm jack.01:40
EtriaphOoh01:41
EtriaphIt means the audio is probably bridged internally.01:41
Noob137I only have "Built In Analog Audio Stereo" listed as a device option in System Settings > Audio and Video01:43
Noob137So if that sounds like what you figured, then I'm up for ideas.01:43
EtriaphThere's probably a driver that converts the audio over to the HDMI out, configuring it under Linux might be a trick.01:45
Noob137When I tried going to Realtek for a driver for the ALC892, their driver not only failed to compile, but just running configure and rebooting b0rked the system.01:46
EtriaphWith that model of Asus people are even having issues doing what you want to do with Windows 7/8.101:46
EtriaphThis is a laptop I'm assuming?01:46
Noob137Nah, the Z97-A is a newish mobo for a PC01:47
Noob137Been out for a year or two01:47
EtriaphAh, I use a dedicated card for HDMI, Nvidia GTX 750 provides both an audio and video channel for HDMI.01:48
EtriaphOnboard audio/video is usually a nightmare.01:48
Noob137:(01:48
EtriaphThat goes with any system though.01:50
EtriaphAnything but eternet on a mobo is generally very poor quality results.01:51
Etriaphhttp://tinyurl.com/otw9mrb01:51
EtriaphThat might be of some use to you01:51
Noob137I keep hearing nvidia is a nightmare on linux, and amd gfx uses double the power of nvidia, and both cards are a bit too expensive - I've been waiting for lower-end 4k capable cards to drop to a reasonable price.01:51
david0rkhi all01:52
EtriaphNoob137: I play CS:Source, Don't Starve, Civ V, L4D2 and Borderlands 2 on my Linux desktop.01:53
EtriaphIt runs *better* under Linux :D01:53
Etriaphdavid0rk: Hi01:53
Noob137:)01:53
Noob137Yeah, I can play most Valve stuff even on Intel Integrated Graphics.  :o01:54
Noob137That's how long it's been since Valve released a game.01:54
EtriaphNoob137: Borderlands 2 is a bit of a bigger beast.01:55
Noob137I heard they use procedural textures or something like that that was pretty intense.01:55
Noob137I'm totally going to take the plunge when the Vive is released.01:56
david0rkEtriaph: if you don't mind i have a question.01:59
david0rkbtw.. borderlands 2 is lovely.01:59
david0rkor anyone really (referring to the question)  anyone know why my virtual terminals (ctrl alt f1-f6) come up as blank on 15.04?02:00
Noob137@Etriaph, I've been going through that thread.02:05
Noob137It's weird, people keep saying adding that options line to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf is supposed to work, but every variant I've ever tried did nothing.02:08
david0rkare you talking about the intel hda models options?02:10
Noob137Okay, so this: "lsmod | grep '^snd' | column -t" is supposed to show a "snd" with a bunch of things after it.02:20
Noob137ALSA FAQ says that one of those things is "snd_hda_codec_hdmi", and mine doesn't have that.02:20
Noob137It does have "snd_hda_codec_realtek", which is good, because it suggests it at least knows that I have a specific card.02:21
Noob137Yes, I'm having HDMI sound issues because HDMI doesn't show up anywhere in my devices, aplay -L, or anywhere02:22
Noob137Yeah, it's definitely recognizing the ALC892 and Intel HDA.  The problem is that HDMI isn't anywhere at all in alsa's sphere of awareness02:32

masaroHi06:48
masaroHas anyone had a problem that their kde5 desktop does not work in laptop without external display?07:07
Tm_Tmasaro: how it does not work?07:10
masaroThe login screen work, but after typing the password (and selecting plasma) screen goes dark.07:10
masaroxfce does work.07:10
Tm_Tmasaro: no cursor?07:11
masaroBut if i insert external display plasma do work.07:11
masaroTm_T: Nothin in screen. Screen is blank.07:11
Tm_Tmasaro: well that's a new, sorry no direct idea what's wrong07:13
Tm_TI wonder if xorg logs would have anything helpful07:13
masaroYup.. It sound so strange. I even reinstelled kubuntu but it did not help.  (kept my old home intact)07:14
masaroXorg logs seems ok and it even show the correct display and as xfce work without any problem I think problem is not in X but in plasma/kde07:17
lordievaderGood morning.07:39
Walexmasaro: you have configured your X system to ignore the internal display.07:43
Walexmasaro: either with 'xorg.conf' or via RANDR tools, like the KDE 'Display' preferences.07:43
masaroWalex: No, xfce does work.07:44
Walexmasaro: perhaps I was not clear enough...07:44
masaroand I do not have anythin in xorg.conf.07:44
Walexmasaro: BTW I hope that answering *after omitting this from the question* with "No, xfce does work" makes it look like that you are expecting psychic people to help you, and you are trying to catch out non-psychic people.07:45
masaroWalex: I meant with "xfce does work" that most probably the problem is in KDE/plasma as xfce does work with same xorg.conf/ randr config.07:47
masaroAnd I think that I found something from the logs that migh lead somewhere...07:48
masaroThere seems to be log of segfaults in syslog about plasma component.07:48
masarolike :  "ksplashqml[7061]: segfault"07:49
masaroand "kactivitymanage[7133]: segfault at 18"07:49
N3X15masaro, are you running on virtualbox?08:19
N3X15If so, downgrade to 4.3.26, they broke a bunch of crap with 4.2.2808:19
