cprofittanyone have experience with openshells for a shell account?20:07
holsteini used freeshell.de20:19
Unit193cprofitt: You asking in terms of then fielding abuse reports?20:20
cprofittanything like that yes... I am debating using them for a shell account vs. vps.20:23
holsteini have a digital ocean droplet.. its $5 US/month..20:24
holsteinthats what i use now, instead of a shell account.. though, it is nice to have someone else maintaining it..20:24
* cprofitt nods20:26
cprofittthe other option is digital ocean20:26
cprofittall it is for is running irssi outside of my personal network20:27
holsteinwell, one of many options.. just depends on what meets the need20:27
* cprofitt nods20:27
cprofittso you like digitalocean?20:27
holsteinworks as advertised.. i dont need it for irssi running in screen.. freeshell.de was just fine for that, and for free20:28
holsteinnothing wrong with digital ocean.. if you need more, and more control.. etc20:28
* cprofitt nods20:29
cprofittI might start with a free shell account then and move over to DO when ready20:29
holsteinpersonally,  if i were going to pay *anything* for a shell account, i would just get a DO droplet20:29
Unit193In theory more secure.  Speaking of secure you may want to ident to services.20:29
Unit193https://freenode.net/sasl/sasl-irssi.shtml20:30
Unit193Thanks. ;)20:31
Unit193Also, the version and packages are totally up to you with a VPS.20:31
holsteinmore control.. though, it was nice to just have freeshell taking care of that.. though, im assuming its "up to date"..20:32
Unit193My Irssi is v0.8.17 plus the splitline commit.20:33
* cprofitt nods20:33
cprofittyes, controlling the version would be nice.20:33
hggdhif it helps any, Digital Ocean is -- as holstein points out -- quite cheap. I have been using it for IRC almost since they started.21:06
hggdhmaintaining the kernel is a bit more involved, they do not update as fast as we put kernels out. And, as in most other places you really want to run fail2ban.21:08
* cprofitt nods to hggdh 21:58
* hggdh nods back to cprofitt21:59
