robin-herohi all! I would like to try the devel-proposed channel in the emualor. But in the tutorial, when it shows how to open the launcher, I can't open it with swipe. So I can't use the pohne. Any idea?09:13
SturmFlutrobin-hero: In the emulator? You should be able to "imitate" the swipe by dragging with the mouse I think09:30
robin-heroSturmFlut: Yes, I know, I used emulator many times :D But it is not working with devel-proposed now :)09:31
SturmFlutrobin-hero: Ah, sorry.09:31
SturmFlutrobin-hero: That sounds like a bug then :/09:32
robin-heroYeah, I think that too09:33
SturmFlutrobin-hero: I haven't seen any related bug reports over the last week I think09:34
robin-heroI am just testing on another machine, just to be sure. :)09:35

hallucygood morning folks. is there a way to enable the mouse cursor?13:26
hallucyerr, to make the mouse cursor visible. i have a microsoft usb mouse plugged in. it is detected and working, just invisible. even in Window mode13:29
=== howefield_afk is now known as howefield
cprofitthello all...14:42
cprofittjust curious what devices currently run Ubuntu Touch -- will the Nexus 9 work?14:42
=== howefield is now known as howefield_afk
OerHekscprofitt, i don't see it on this list https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Devices14:46
cprofittYeah, that is why I was asking...14:47
cprofittthe N7 and N10 are not longer available.14:47
cprofittin the states we don't have access to the BQ stuff (yet)14:47
OerHeksThat bq 4.5 is EU only, afaik14:48
* cprofitt nods14:48

JanCcprofitt: maybe the Chinese Ubuntu phone will have a US version16:28
popeythere's no plan for the Meizu MX4 in the US that I know of.16:29
JanCAFAIK the bq phone radio doesn't support US frequencies16:29
JanCoh16:30
JanCso the MX4 won't support US frequencies either?16:30
JanCpopey: ^^^16:31
ogra_who made you think that ?16:34
ogra_(or what)16:34
JanCogra_: think what?16:35
ogra_that the MX4 doesnt support US freqs16:35
popeyI'm just saying I don't think there's plans to _sell_ the device in the US.16:37
popeyit may well work fine over there16:37
JanCI was asking if that was the reason16:37
ogra_it definitely works fine in the US16:37
JanCso that's better than the bq (supposedly) not working (everywhere) in the US, I guess?16:39
popeyit works16:40
popeyjust not 3g16:40
ogra_well, the bq work ... but max at 2g16:40
JanCah16:40
ogra_not fun if you actually have a data SIM ...16:40
ogra_okayish if you travel and use WLAN for data anyway ...16:40
ogra_though kind of defeats the purpose of having a second sim slot :)16:40
JanCIIRC some bq FAQ stated frequency issues for not selling in the US16:41
JanCbut that might refer to 3G/data16:42
OerHeksbq does 3g too16:42
popeyyes, the 3g frequencies are different16:42
JanCOerHeks: in Europe16:42
popeysilly USA16:42
OerHeksand Quad-Band 850/900/1800/1900, so USA should be covered?16:42
popeyfor calls, yes16:43
popeybut not 3g16:43
OerHeksoh oke, that is the issue.16:43
JanCogra_: second SIM slot can be useful for travelling inside Europe too?  :)16:48
OerHeksI was waiting for that meizu, 'till i found out it has no sdcard slot16:48
JanCEurope & other places using the same frequencies16:49
JanCe.g. in the ME & Africa AFAIK16:50
cprofittJanC: I hope so... keep waiting for an announcement.16:59
JanCcprofitt: or convince a US mobile phone company to sell an Ubuntu phone  :)17:04
popeyAIUI that's in progress17:05
JanCor maybe System 76 or the like can be convinced to do so17:05
popeythat's even harder17:07
popeymuch easier to get people who have experience of manufacturing phones to make them17:07
cprofittJanC: I ask every trip to my AT&T store when they are planning on getting one.17:07
JanCwell, they could resell phones17:07
JanCpopey: most "mobile phone brands" are resellers, right?17:08
popeybut someone needs to do the hardware enablement17:09
popeyand recognised brands are easier to sell than new entrants17:09
JanCMeizu & bq are hardly "well-known"17:10
popeythey are in their home turf17:12
popeymy point is system76 are unknown in phone markets _anywhere_17:13
JanCwhich shouldn't be a huge problem for a developer phone?17:14
JanCalso, when Medion, Acer, Asus, etc. sold their first smartphones, they had no experience either17:15
popeyall of whom are orders of magnitude larger than system7617:18
JanCbut is bq much larger than System 76?17:19
JanCI doubt so...17:19
=== Guest54633 is now known as IdleOne
popeyhard to know, system76 revenue is private17:20
popeybq has over 900 employees17:20
popeysystem76 is _way_ smaller as a company17:20
cprofittsystem76 is just a re-badger and re-seller... and are very small.17:21
cprofittgreat people though.17:21
popeysure. I'm not being negative about system7617:21
JanCso they could re-badge bq or Meizu phones17:22
popeymakes no sense17:22
popeythere's already precious little margin on devices17:22
cprofittJanC: they could, but the issue in the US is getting carrier support17:22
JanCcprofitt: ugh17:22
cprofittit is a tougher nut to crack than the EU due to all the subsidies17:22
popeythats becoming less of an issue17:23
popeyfor "indie" handsets17:23
cprofittI am positive that the major carriers make money off of the phones despite the subsidies...17:23
popeysome companies sell direct - like OnePlus and Oppo17:23
popeyI expect we'd do the same initially17:23
cprofittpopey: for sure... there is a growing sub-set of people demanding unlocked unsubsidies phones17:23
popeyyeah17:23
JanCyou mean they lock out phones?17:24
cprofittsome of the smaller 're-sellers' of carrier service are pushing that too.17:24
popeyJanC: no, many people in the US buy handsets which are subsidised by the network17:24
popeysame as in europe17:24
cprofittJanC: when you guys an AT&T phone you can't take it to Verizon (usually)17:24
popeybut in the US it's way more common17:24
cprofittI would say 90-95% buy subidies phones unless they are on month-to-month or pay-as-you-go plans17:25
cprofitttwo year contracts are the norm.17:25
JanCright, but a non-subsidised phone should still work right?17:25
popeythats pretty common in the uk too17:25
popeyright17:25
popeybut people are locked into contracts17:25
cprofittJanC: only if the carrier is willing to accept it.17:25
popeyor of the mindset that it's the normal way, to buy locked phones17:25
cprofittthe Nexus 4 I have only works with AT&T or T-Mobile17:25
popeycprofitt: you have sim-only deals though?17:26
cprofittand I get a lower tier of service because it was not branded by either17:26
JanCWTF?17:26
cprofittT-Mobile would not allow voice calls over IP unless you had their branded Nexus 417:26
lotuspsychjei hear the dont sell nexus7 anymore17:26
cprofittcorrect -- US is all Nexus 6 or Nexus 9 right now.17:27
popeyshame, the nexus 5 was a decent device17:27
lotuspsychjedoes touch run on 6 or 9 yet?17:27
popeythe churn on devices is very high17:27
popeyno17:27
popeytouch needs porting to android L17:27
lotuspsychjeso no tablets anymore for ubuntu touch?17:27
ice9is it mandatory to build/port touch on Ubuntu system?17:28
popeylotuspsychje: nexus 7 2013 and nexus 10 both work17:28
popeylotuspsychje: we'll have to move to Android L at some point17:29
lotuspsychjepopey: ah nexus10 works smooth as 7?17:29
popeyand when we do that'll make porting to those devices easier, but someone still needs to do the work17:29
JanCI understand subsidized devices to be locked to the subsidizer until you pay them off, but everything beyond that sounds like a racketeering scheme really...17:29
popeyneither are perfect17:29
popeyJanC: welcome to the mobile phone business for the last 20 years17:29
lotuspsychjepopey: well i cant complain on 7, working pretty flawless to me17:29
JanCpopey: not over here :)17:29
popeyunfortimately it needs more love17:29
lotuspsychjehttp://news.softpedia.com/news/Here-s-What-s-New-in-Ubuntu-Touch-OTA-4-Update-482755.shtml17:30
popeyJanC: it's not _that_ different17:30
JanCpopey: here it's illegal for mobile phone providers to lock SIMs after you paid for the full contract, which can be at most worth 1 or 2 years of subscription IIRC17:35
popeysame in most places17:35
popeyyou can get the lock off when the contract ends17:35
popeywhich is reasonable.17:35
JanCand it's illegal to sell a phone combined with a contract if it isn't also available separately17:37
