trippehoops ? :-)01:55
trippehevery boot. interesting.01:55
apwtrippeh, looks like a bug in ifquery/ifup to me worth a bug i am sure09:28
* ogra_ sighs ... when did we silently switch to intel_pstate ?09:31
ogra_totally trashed my update to vivid (cores switching to 133 MHz while the system is under full load, core temps constantly between 85 and 90°C )09:32
* ogra_ files bug 146039910:10
ubot5bug 1460399 in linux (Ubuntu) "ivybridge system gets completely unusable after upgrade to vivid thanks to defaulting to immature intel_pstate driver" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/146039910:10
apwogra_, do you have thermald installed as i believe that is meant to be programming those behaviours11:49
ogra_apw, dumping to 166 ot 133MHz is a thermald thing ? 11:51
ogra_*or11:51
ogra_(under full load)11:51
ogra_it stopped doing that when i switched back to ondemand ... 11:52
trippehprobably pstate enables the turbo states, making it run too hot for your cooling and crashing into thermal throttling11:52
ogra_well, the point is that it didnt manage to get the heat low enough and the BIOS emergency shutdown kicked in every 10-15min11:54
ogra_the system behaves properly after switching back to cpufreq11:55
ogra_(without making any other changes)11:55
apwtrippeh, thermald does indeed allow turbo and other things, it should of course also not make your machine explode too11:56
apwogra_, using pstat_idle is the recommneded option on these pieces of h/w so i am supprised of your experience11:56
apwogra_, anyhow i've added cking to the thing becuase he did all the work on that back in the day11:56
apw(recommended by Intel, ...)11:57
trippehinte_pstate has been working fine on my hardware, fwiw :)11:57
ogra_well, it diidnt help that i wasted 3h into trying to find out why X was so slow ... debugging graphics stuff :P the system really felt like i'm running something even sub-vesa ... 11:57
trippeheven the tiny cooling challenged ultrabooks11:57
ogra_currently i'm fine ... once someone wants to debug it during the week i'm happy to collect data 11:58
ogra_after all it got me to clean up 100 of my 150 constantly open firefox tabs ... so it had it's good sides ;) 11:59
apwogra_, yeah i'll poke cking monday and see what he thinks12:02
ogra_i only found an older bug from infinity who seemed to have the same issue but in another release 12:03
apwtrippeh, yeah same here, i have a shitey ulrabook [sic] and it is also fine12:03
ogra_bug 118864712:03
ubot5bug 1188647 in linux (Ubuntu) "Please change intel_pstate default to disable" [High,Fix released] https://launchpad.net/bugs/118864712:03
apwogra_, yeah and that was before we had thermald paired with it, the kernel bits are useless without hte daemon, and it wasnt packaged then12:03
ogra_ah12:04
ogra_thermald is quite noisy in syslog btw 12:04
apwwhich is why i was trying to find out if you have thermald installed and if when in pstate it was running because that is mean to be "the way it works"12:04
apwyeah we ought to look at that, much of that thermal stuff is whiney12:04
ogra_yeah, i noticed :)12:04
apwif you could add your thermald logs for the bad period (if you cna identify them) they may be valuable12:05
ogra_i'll look them up 12:05
apwthanks12:18

bigdissaved Morning, I am wondering what how I can recomend a kernel driver be added to the dist? It is for the rtl8812AU AC 1200 wireless chip. I have it working on my system, but it is very anoying that I have to recompile and install it every kernel/system update. It is in my garage, and wifi is the only connection that it has.17:53
bigdissavedhttps://github.com/abperiasamy/rtl8812AU_8821AU_linux  this is the source code tree that I am using, and it works flawlesly for my self with 15.04 and 14.04.217:53
