DreskSo I did a distro upgrade from 14 to 15, and I'm noticing that I no longer have lubuntu-base in my packages, but I do have ubuntu-base - is that a problem?14:53
holsteinDresk: from 14.10 to 15.04?15:57
Dreskholstein: Yes sir / maam15:57
holsteinDresk: do you still have lubuntu 15.04?15:57
holsteinif things look "normal" in lxde, and you are in a lubuntu session, i would say, all is well.. those are just "meta-pacakges"15:57
Dreskholstein: Meaning, what, in terms of having?15:58
holsteinDresk: are you booting into lxde?15:58
DreskAll does look well, yes15:58
Dreskholstein: Yes, I am15:58
holsteinDresk: cool.. i say,  enjoy, then, and dont worry with the meta-package15:58
Dreskholstein: It was offputting to me when everyday I would get Software Updates for "lubuntu-base", but now it's "ubuntu-base"15:58
holsteinDresk: you can look in the package manager of your choice, and see what the differences are in those meta packages15:59
DreskWell I don't have lubuntu-base anymore, it's not an available package15:59
holsteincould be, in the update, something was changed.. but, if you have lubuntu, you are fine15:59
Dreskholstein: I always found it difficult to understand that I have "lubuntu"; what should I consider as definitive evidence that I have lubuntu versus Ubuntu to a point where I just use LXDE by default and have some Lubuntu packages for configuring stuff16:00
holsteinDresk: sure.. lubuntu *is* ubuntu16:00
holsteinDresk: when you have lxde installed, it will get updated, when updates come in, regardless of the meta package16:01
ElizDresk: lubuntu is just ubuntu with a set of packages and a theme16:02
Elizall installed from the meta-package "lubuntu-base"16:02
DreskArgh!16:03
DreskEliz: That's the package I lost!16:03
holsteinsure16:03
holsteinand thats *fine*16:03
ElizDresk: it's not a real package16:03
holsteinthats *not* lubuntu, or lxde.. thats just a meta package16:03
ElizDresk: essentially it's a blank package that says "install these packages"16:03
Elizyou still have all the other packages,16:03
DreskShouldn't I still see it in some form?16:04
Elizand those are still updated16:04
holsteinit says "install the lubuntu base that is a set of packages described by the name".. you *sill* have the packages, and they get updated16:04
ElizDresk: worst case, `apt-get install lubuntu-base`16:04
Elizthat'll just work16:04
DreskEliz: Would you recommend I do that when I have ubuntu-base installed and, as of now, everything seems fine?16:04
holstein!info lubuntu-desktop16:04
ubottulubuntu-desktop (source: lubuntu-meta): Lubuntu Desktop environment. In component universe, is optional. Version 0.59 (vivid), package size 2 kB, installed size 31 kB (Only available for i386; amd64; powerpc; armhf)16:04
holsteinyou will still see that meta-package, if having a meta-package installed feels particularly "soothing" to you16:05
Elizit ultimately really doesn't matter16:05
Elizyou can install it16:05
holsteinyou dont need it, since, you have lubuntu/lxde ubuntu installed, and are getting updates16:05
Elizwon't change much :p16:05
Elizthe fact it's "missing" literally will change nothing16:05
holsteinits just a meta-package name, and things are changing..16:06
DreskI thank yourselves for your time, it puts me to ease16:07
DreskOne other issue I have, I would greatly appreciate opinions on the matter - many of the applications I have come from Canonical (spelling?), and they take forever to update some of these apps (such as Pidgin) - what is someone to do in this scenario?  Does (L)Ubuntu have a well-supported, maybe semi-official repo for keeping things more up-to-date than Canonical?16:09
ElizDresk: no16:09
ElizDresk: we're not using any extra repos outside of the ubuntu repos16:09
Elizfind a closer mirror16:09
holsteinDresk: its not a rolling release.. they actually *never* update them, by design16:10
holsteinyou only get security updates, to most components.. web browsers are an exception16:10
DreskOne thing I noticed, heh16:10
Elizoh, that kind of fast16:11
Elizlol16:11
holsteinthere are PPA's that a creator can use to give you versions..16:11
holstein!ppa16:11
ubottuA Personal Package Archive (PPA) can provide alternate software not normally available in the offical Ubuntu repositories - Looking for a PPA? See https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+ppas - WARNING: PPAs are unsupported third-party packages, and you use them at your own risk. See also !addppa and !ppa-purge16:11
holsteinor, you can build and install whatever versions you want16:11
Elizthought you meant "slow to download" heh16:11
holsteinwhat do i do in this scenario? i use stock sources when i can.. then, if i "Trust" the creator/maintainer of a PPA, i'll try it, knowing the risk and how to remove the  source16:12
cheche1Hi, I am searching for mame-ui on lubuntu 14.04 something similar to http://imagenes.es.sftcdn.net/es/scrn/54000/54089/mameui-04-700x525.jpg16:12
holstein!mame-ui16:13
holstein!info mame-ui16:13
ubottuPackage mame-ui does not exist in vivid16:13
holsteincheche1: what are you trying to accomplish?16:13
cheche1holstein: I hae mame running just fine on lubuntu16:14
cheche1but it lacks of a user interface16:14
holsteincheche1: im not sure what that *.jpg is, but, it looks like a simple file manager.. what are you trying to do?16:14
cheche1is a file manager with screenshot of the games16:14
cheche1people do not remember the name of the game, but does remember the screeenshot. :-)16:15
holsteincheche1: of "the games"?16:15
cheche1holstein: yes, sorry.16:16
holsteinhttp://gmameui.sourceforge.net/16:17
cheche1holstein: yes. but it is not in lubuntu.16:18
holsteincheche1: sure.. i dont see it in the ubuntu repos, correct16:18
holsteincheche1: i dont think anything promises that.. but, if you like, you can implement the functionality you want16:18
cheche1holstein: there is as well gnome-video-arcade16:20
holsteincheche1: cool.. try it16:21
holstein!info gnome-video-arcade16:21
ubottugnome-video-arcade (source: gnome-video-arcade): Simple MAME frontend. In component multiverse, is optional. Version 0.8.3-1 (vivid), package size 1503 kB, installed size 3361 kB16:21
holsteinlooks like few dependencies..16:22
holsteinlaunches.. looks good..16:23
cheche1I did, but it does not have screen shot of the games. Maybe I need to research what content is missing.16:24
holsteincheche1: or, maybe nothing is missing, at all.. but the software doesnt promise a screenshot.. try the other option, and see that it provides the functionality you seek.. you can also try main #ubuntu and see if anyone is using mame, since, its not speicifc to lubuntu/lxde16:25
cheche1holstein: seems like gmameui is deleted https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gmameui/16:31
holsteincheche1: yes. its not there.. its not in the stock ubuntu repos16:31
holsteincheche1: you'll want to look at the link i gave for a current fork.. you can ask the creators of the software for an ubuntu package16:31
cheche1holstein: sure.16:31
DreskWell, after upgrading to 15.04 everything seems peachy, but both a native PulseAudio application (Teamspeak 3) and a non-native PulseAudio application (Pidgin) are giving me about a full second of latency in playback now, whereas lots of other apps are just fine20:01
holsteinthose should have latency20:06
holsteinmaybe not a full second, but, i dont think you can assume the issue yet.. could be networking related, etc20:07
Dreskholstein: They didn't have latency before20:10
Dreskholstein: I've been using Teamspeak3 since it was released and latency is not a feature of the app, let alone latency on the sounds it plays (it has latency in both sounds and people speaking)20:11
Dreskholstein: As for Pidgin, again, prior to upgrading, it had no latency, whereas now it has latency and it cuts off at the end, pretty much trimming the amount of time the latency took20:12
Dreskholstein: Audacious works just fine, playing my music instantly, XChat plays sound immediately, VLC again, immediately20:13
whytrytoflyhello21:37
