Fossfile | hi fellas, I have a minor issue with my Lubuntu and some help will be appreciated: I've installed Lubuntu twice through vmware: once into a USB drive and the second time to a vmware hard drive. in both installations the system didn't accept the root password that was chosen (as I'm required to type it for example with sudo/synaptic). It was easily fixable in the USB drive installation | 15:29 |
---|---|---|
Fossfile | by simply booting to recovery mode, mounting / as rw and resetting password | 15:29 |
Fossfile | with the installation on a hard drive however, for some reason this fix isn't working | 15:30 |
ianorlin | Fossfile: strange but I however don't use vmware. Did you use any sort of full disc /home encryption in the hard drive? | 15:44 |
ianorlin | Fossfile: also how customized is this vm? | 15:47 |
teward | I assume this is in vmware player, Fossfile, not VMware Workstation? (Or ESXi) | 15:49 |
Fossfile | ianorlin: no encryption, just regular installation also very simply password (identical to the username) because it's intended to be dedicated for kodi (xbmc) software | 15:50 |
Fossfile | teward: VM Workstation | 15:51 |
Fossfile | not a slim player | 15:51 |
teward | stupid question, then, why not use VMWare Workstation's built in encryption functionality | 16:05 |
teward | for the encryption part :P | 16:05 |
teward | Fossfile: as for the installation on a hard drive, is the procedure you're using identical for resetting the PW? recovery mode, root prompt, sudo mount ... etc., passwd, etc.? | 16:06 |
teward | and which Lubuntu, I may be able to test on my next break | 16:06 |
Fossfile | teward: excuse me for the delayed response, yes the procedure is identicle for changing the password as we both described. This is the latest Lubuntu amd64 15.04. I have no idea why that procedure that fixed the issue on the usb drive installation didn't work for the hard drive installation.. then again I have no idea why this issue happened in the first place. | 17:03 |
Fossfile | would be nice if someone could answer find out how to fix it and why it happens, I have to split for about 3 hours. | 17:04 |

sebastian_ | I cannot access the power manager when I click on it says Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken. | 21:48 |
ianorlin | sebastian_: which versoin of lubuntu?\ | 23:18 |
sebastian_ | the most recent | 23:39 |
sebastian_ | ianorlin, 14.04 | 23:39 |
wxl | sebastian_: that's not the most recent ;) | 23:39 |
sebastian_ | what was the command ont he terminal | 23:39 |
sebastian_ | to determine this | 23:39 |
wxl | `lsb_release -a` | 23:39 |
sebastian_ | 14.04 | 23:40 |
sebastian_ | which is the most recent? and how do i install it? | 23:40 |
wxl | that *is* the most recent LTS | 23:40 |
wxl | but 15.04 is the most recently released | 23:40 |
sebastian_ | how do i install that from the command line? | 23:40 |
wxl | and 15.10 is in development (and technically available for install) | 23:40 |
wxl | `sudo do-release-upgrade` should get you there. | 23:40 |
sebastian_ | command not found | 23:41 |
sebastian_ | it says | 23:42 |
sebastian_ | no release found | 23:42 |
wxl | try adding the -p and/or -d switch | 23:43 |
sebastian_ | what? | 23:44 |
wxl | `sudo do-release-upgrade -p`, e.g. | 23:44 |
sebastian_ | no release found | 23:44 |
wxl | then try -d | 23:44 |
sebastian_ | no release found | 23:45 |
wxl | argh | 23:47 |
wxl | you're probably on lts | 23:47 |
sebastian_ | what does that mean? | 23:47 |
wxl | !lts | 23:47 |
ubottu | LTS means Long Term Support. Until 12.04 LTS versions of Ubuntu were supported for 3 years on the desktop, and 5 years on the server; since 12.04 (Precise Pangolin) LTS versions will be supported for 5 years on the desktop and server. The latest LTS version of Ubuntu is !Trusty (Trusty Tahr 14.04) | 23:47 |
wxl | tl;dr it means we may have to hack our way to getting you out of lts | 23:48 |
wxl | is your purpose to get the most bleeding edge release? | 23:48 |
sebastian_ | maybe, i need to ensure compatibility with printer and iphone | 23:49 |
wxl | printer should be no problem | 23:49 |
sebastian_ | iphone? | 23:49 |
wxl | maybe | 23:49 |
wxl | i know there's upstream work that's been done on it | 23:49 |
sebastian_ | i cannot directly input files onto my iphone from ubuntu yet | 23:49 |
sebastian_ | i need to use dropbox | 23:49 |
wxl | last time i tried it couldn't do everything | 23:50 |
sebastian_ | plus the issue with the power management option that doesn't work | 23:50 |
sebastian_ | gives me an error | 23:50 |
wxl | sebastian_: give me the result of `grep Prompt /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades | awk -F '=' '{print $2}'` | 23:51 |
sebastian_ | nothing happens | 23:52 |
wxl | uh | 23:53 |
wxl | you sure you typed it right? | 23:53 |
sebastian_ | awk: line 2: syntax error at or near awk | 23:53 |
sebastian_ | awk: line 3: missing } near end of file | 23:53 |
wxl | yeah you probably typed it wrong thenm | 23:53 |
sebastian_ | i copied everything | 23:55 |
wxl | well you could look at the contents of /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades | 23:56 |
wxl | if Prompt=lts then do-release-upgrade won't give you anything until you have a new release | 23:57 |
wxl | you should set it to normal and then do-release-upgrade will do what it's supposed to | 23:57 |
