ogra_cking, hey ... so i found the issue of my overheating laptop ... (though it still is beyond me why it started *exactly* with the upgrade to vivid) ... obviously a 1cm thick filth blob at the fan intake isnt really helping to cool the CPU ... 13:18
ogra_(took me a week to get the right wrench to even open that XPS13 properl)13:19
ogra_i havent tried switching back to thermald control yet, but i guess it will be fine13:19
ogra_read: i think we can close the bug13:19
ckingogra_, ah, it should be fine w/o thermald if you have cleaned out the fan13:19
ckinghttp://smackerelofopinion.blogspot.co.uk/2010/09/hot-laptop.html13:19
ckingit's happened to us all13:20
ogra_well, the thing is that the dveic ebehaved totally fine before the upgrade ... 13:20
ogra_uh, my typing ... 13:20
ckingogra_, vivid works hard to make sure you CPU does not cook, so I think the scaling was trying to do this and not working well because the thermal gradients were not as it expected13:21
ogra_but yeah, my fan intake looked similar :)13:21
ogra_ah !13:21
ckingthe passive cooling expects some kind of heating/cooling characteristic, but if the CPU is on fire it will just ramp down fast then give you all sorts of odd up/down speed changes13:22
ogra_yeah, now i understand 13:22
ckingi'm glad it resolved it.  i7's are probably the worst headache as they dump a lot of heat very quickly into the thermal zone13:23
ogra_yeah, and the old XPS13 having a teeny weeny fan and heatpipies going everywhere through the case doesnt really help the case :)13:25
ckingogra_, i guess manufacturers need to run stress-ng to see if their laptop thermal designs are OK ;-)13:27
ogra_well, i'm sure it is ok if it comes out of the factory ... they should be obligated to do tests after 1-2 years of usage ;)13:27
ckingogra_, care to update bug 1460399 with your findings, I think we should close that one now :-)13:39
ubot5bug 1460399 in linux (Ubuntu Vivid) "ivybridge system gets completely unusable after upgrade to vivid thanks to defaulting to immature intel_pstate driver" [High,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/146039913:39
ogra_cking, yeah, closing it (there was someone else moaning in a comment, i guess he should open a new one)13:40
ckingdefinitely13:41
