[13:18] cking, hey ... so i found the issue of my overheating laptop ... (though it still is beyond me why it started *exactly* with the upgrade to vivid) ... obviously a 1cm thick filth blob at the fan intake isnt really helping to cool the CPU ... [13:19] (took me a week to get the right wrench to even open that XPS13 properl) [13:19] i havent tried switching back to thermald control yet, but i guess it will be fine [13:19] read: i think we can close the bug [13:19] ogra_, ah, it should be fine w/o thermald if you have cleaned out the fan [13:19] http://smackerelofopinion.blogspot.co.uk/2010/09/hot-laptop.html [13:20] it's happened to us all [13:20] well, the thing is that the dveic ebehaved totally fine before the upgrade ... [13:20] uh, my typing ... [13:21] ogra_, vivid works hard to make sure you CPU does not cook, so I think the scaling was trying to do this and not working well because the thermal gradients were not as it expected [13:21] but yeah, my fan intake looked similar :) [13:21] ah ! [13:22] the passive cooling expects some kind of heating/cooling characteristic, but if the CPU is on fire it will just ramp down fast then give you all sorts of odd up/down speed changes [13:22] yeah, now i understand [13:23] i'm glad it resolved it. i7's are probably the worst headache as they dump a lot of heat very quickly into the thermal zone [13:25] yeah, and the old XPS13 having a teeny weeny fan and heatpipies going everywhere through the case doesnt really help the case :) [13:27] ogra_, i guess manufacturers need to run stress-ng to see if their laptop thermal designs are OK ;-) [13:27] well, i'm sure it is ok if it comes out of the factory ... they should be obligated to do tests after 1-2 years of usage ;) [13:39] ogra_, care to update bug 1460399 with your findings, I think we should close that one now :-) [13:39] bug 1460399 in linux (Ubuntu Vivid) "ivybridge system gets completely unusable after upgrade to vivid thanks to defaulting to immature intel_pstate driver" [High,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/1460399 [13:40] cking, yeah, closing it (there was someone else moaning in a comment, i guess he should open a new one) [13:41] definitely
