ewet | HI, I'm still coming across this problem https://plus.google.com/+GrzegorzKarwowski/posts/hqJ2V9ZCC1U . SMB public shares are extremely slow in KDE 5 (Kubuntu 15.04). In the past I worked around it by deactivating kwallet. Setting "any" username/password in System-Settings/Connectivity doesn't work. What am I supposed to do? | 06:49 |

valorie | ewet: have you searched the bugtrackers? | 07:47 |
valorie | I've not heard others mention the problem | 07:48 |
valorie | posting problems/bug reports to G+ seems a long way around the barn, so to speak | 07:49 |
valorie | no bug # is mentioned in the G+ post | 07:49 |
ewet | smbclient is behaving normally btw. | 07:57 |
ewet | it might be related to this https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dolphin/+bug/550636. But I have really limited knowledge about KDE... | 07:59 |

ewet | it might not actually just be related, that might be the bug. cifs-utils and smbclient work perfectly fine. It's just Dolphin its authentication mechanism. | 08:25 |

Guest28624 | few of my application icons are not coming with kubuntu 15.04....not even on search field on kubuntu default text editor...it shows black icon instead | 15:14 |
yuriy | OS boots correctly when i delete .cache, .config, /var/tmp cacheches for the user | 15:15 |
yuriy | but next boot could be with black screen again | 15:15 |
BluesKaj | yuriy, have you enabled sddm with systemctl in the VT ? | 15:16 |
yuriy | what do you mean VT? | 15:16 |
horacy | Hello my question is: is KUbuntu 15.04 x64 compatible with Secure Boot??? | 15:17 |
yuriy | i think here is lightdm used | 15:17 |
Guest28624 | anyone here to answer my issue / | 15:18 |
horacy | asking cause I have laptop whioch is locked to run only with secure boot enabled only :( | 15:18 |
BluesKaj | yuriy, Virtual Terminal , ctl+alt+F1-F6 , odd because that problem seems to be with 15.04 , not earleir releases | 15:19 |
BluesKaj | horacy, you can't change it he UEFI/BIOS ? | 15:20 |
yuriy | yes, i use 15.04 | 15:20 |
yuriy | possibly you are right | 15:20 |
BluesKaj | then you have sddm by default afaik | 15:21 |
yuriy | ok | 15:21 |
horacy | no its blocked only thing i can do is to turn into Legacy Bios Mode but than every os is freezing after some tiome of use :( | 15:21 |
yuriy | so what i need to do to resolve that non stability | 15:22 |
BluesKaj | horacy, make sure "quick boot " or whatever it's called on your pc is disabled too | 15:22 |
yuriy | i even deleted fglrx driver | 15:22 |
yuriy | some icons of some appps in kwin disabled | 15:23 |
BluesKaj | yuriy, make sure you have the xserver-xorg-video-ati driver installed | 15:24 |
yuriy | ok | 15:26 |
BluesKaj | as a minimum | 15:26 |
yuriy | already installed | 15:26 |
horacy | unfortunatelly i dont have such thing only secure boot which is blocked thats all I can do :( | 15:26 |
horacy | probably i have to reinstalll W8 now :( | 15:26 |
BluesKaj | yuriy, open a terminal if you can , sudo systemctl enable sddm or drop to a TTY/VT using ctl+alt+F1-F6 , and do the command there, then startx or reboot | 15:30 |
BluesKaj | horacy, do see the grub menu ok | 15:30 |
horacy | actuallu im before installing | 15:31 |
horacy | i just needed an info about that is it working with SB or not | 15:31 |
BluesKaj | horacy, it should work with secure boot if installed with UEFI method | 15:32 |
horacy | ok thx | 15:32 |
BluesKaj | !UEFI | horacy | 15:32 |
ubottu | horacy: UEFI is a specification that defines a software interface between an operating system and platform firmware. It is meant as a replacement for the BIOS. Krixvar | TJ-: okay, so I have the partitions created by Windows (including an efi partition), a LUKS encrypted /boot, and a LUKS encrypted LVM | 21:05 |
TJ- | Krixvar: I'll dupe that roughly :) | 21:05 |
Krixvar | And a ntfs data partition but I don't think that matters right now haha | 21:05 |
TJ- | I'll just create small empty partitions to simulate it | 21:06 |
Krixvar | on a side note, the fact that I can make them all primary partitions is sweeet | 21:06 |
Krixvar | okay | 21:06 |
TJ- | 'primary' doesn't have any real meaning for GPT | 21:06 |
Krixvar | Yeah, I suppose that's just what the KDE partitioner calls them | 21:06 |
TJ- | The GPT usually has space for a minimum of 128 partition entries | 21:06 |
TJ- | Yeah, because they're proper partitions not chained logicals in some sill 'extended' chain | 21:07 |
TJ- | s/sill/silly/ | 21:07 |
TJ- | Right I'm at the partitioner ... Manual of course | 21:07 |
Krixvar | Yup | 21:08 |
Krixvar | So I select the partition I created inside the luks and make it /boot, then the ones inside lvm to appropriate root home etc | 21:09 |
TJ- | I'm going to use gdisk to create the partitions; this partitioner is sooooo slow because parted re-reads everything each time a change is made | 21:09 |
Krixvar | uh that's etcetera not /etc | 21:09 |
Krixvar | sounds good | 21:09 |
TJ- | Not so... the screen is garbled in the VM | 21:10 |
Krixvar | uh oh | 21:10 |
TJ- | All text looks like someone drew the vertical blinds across it | 21:10 |
Krixvar | huh.. is there some sort of vm tools you can install? I'm only familiar with vmware really though | 21:11 |
TJ- | Ahhhh... a real VT sorts it Ctrl+Alt+F1 | 21:11 |
Krixvar | hmm? | 21:11 |
Krixvar | switching helped? From talking to you I'm being quickly reminded of how much I still have left to learn :P | 21:12 |
TJ- | That never stops :) | 21:13 |
Krixvar | haha that's true | 21:13 |
TJ- | i'm installing openssh-server in the live environment so I can control it more easily | 21:13 |
Krixvar | sounds good | 21:14 |
Krixvar | oh huh so you're supposed to mount the efi partition into /boot apparently? | 21:14 |
TJ- | The ESP should be at /boot/efi/ | 21:15 |
Krixvar | Okay, so I'd need to mount that before I start the installer? | 21:15 |
TJ- | I'm not sure; you need to be careful that the installer doesn't try to format /boot/ and hit the ESP as well! | 21:16 |
Krixvar | I'll make sure not to hit the format button | 21:17 |
Krixvar | I figure since they're newly created partitions its not needed anyways | 21:17 |
TJ- | It's not you... I don't trust the installer! | 21:17 |
Krixvar | heh I agree | 21:17 |
TJ- | The ESP is already a FAT32 with boot files in for Windows | 21:17 |
Krixvar | the partition manager says its efi | 21:18 |
Krixvar | the kubuntu installer doesn't recognize it -.- | 21:18 |
Krixvar | oh wait it says its fat32 now | 21:20 |
Krixvar | odd | 21:20 |
Krixvar | might have been gdisk that said that | 21:20 |
TJ- | I'm having a slight argument because I'm not sure what the password is for the kubuntu user! Thought it was "kubuntu" but no | 21:21 |
Krixvar | I believe its blank | 21:21 |
Krixvar | in 15.04 at least, I doubt they would have anything set from earlier | 21:22 |
Krixvar | I mounted efi into /boot/efi but I'm pretty sure the installer's going to tell me to unmount it so I can install to it | 21:22 |
TJ- | Krixvar: Looking at /etc/shadow it doesn't look like it... on Ubuntu it's usually ubuntu/ubuntu with the user able to do sudo without a password | 21:22 |
mr0everywhere | i am trying to set up a linksys ae6000 wifi dongle on a clean install of kubuntu 15.04 using this tutorial http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/1897 and it pops an error on the make command saying gcc command not found | 21:23 |
Krixvar | hmm yeah I'm seeing mixed answers about whether its blank or kubuntu | 21:24 |
Krixvar | mr0everywhere: You can make sure gcc is installed with sudo apt-get install gcc | 21:24 |
mr0everywhere | the computer it is on has no internet currently to be able to get it | 21:24 |
mr0everywhere | how would i go about getting it from a windows computer? | 21:24 |
genii | mr0everywhere: sudo apt-get install build-essential | 21:24 |
Krixvar | Do you have access to another computer that does? You can manually download it | 21:24 |
mr0everywhere | i have access on my windows computer but no linux | 21:25 |
mr0everywhere | i have been doing everything via usb drive from one to another | 21:25 |
genii | mr0everywhere: Use a livecd on the windows computer | 21:25 |
Krixvar | mr0everywhere: genii's suggestion is probably easiest, if for some reason that's not possible you can download it here but you'd have to get all the requirements too http://packages.ubuntu.com/vivid/gcc | 21:26 |
Krixvar | TJ-: any luck? | 21:26 |
TJ- | Krixvar: This is the partition layout I've created http://imgur.com/XpecuqR | 21:26 |
TJ- | Krixvar: ignore the EF02 ... there's not a good choice for luks/dm-crypt | 21:27 |
Krixvar | TJ-: looks similar enough, main difference is that I have a separate /boot from the lbm | 21:30 |
Krixvar | *lvm | 21:30 |
Krixvar | and my efi partition is only 100mb because its tied between all the windows partitions and the partitioner kept crashing when I tried to move things to expand it | 21:30 |
TJ- | Krixvar: me too. see http://paste.ubuntu.com/11817541/ | 21:33 |
Krixvar | ah cool, looks good then | 21:35 |
mr0everywhere | i have a package and all of its dependencies on a usb drive, how do i go about installing them? they are all .deb files and there are some circular dependencies that i noticed | 21:35 |
Krixvar | assuming the space in efi isn't an issue, I haven't read up too much on how much goes in it | 21:35 |
TJ- | Krixvar: Commands issued so far http://paste.ubuntu.com/11817549/ | 21:36 |
TJ- | Krixvar: 128MB would be sufficient for ESP | 21:36 |
Krixvar | TJ-: only have 104 because Windows is weird :/ | 21:37 |
TJ- | Krixvar: starting the installer now | 21:37 |
Krixvar | Okay, I'm sitting at the manual partitioning | 21:37 |
TJ- | There now | 21:38 |
Krixvar | Cool, so I'll set lvm partitions to the right stuff, skipping swap since it fails consistently with this installer | 21:39 |
TJ- | I've selected "/dev/mapper/VG-rootfs", pressed Change, Use as "Ext4 ...", Format, Mount point "/" | 21:40 |
Krixvar | Same here, should boot be ext4 or 2? The arch page was saying 2 for some reason | 21:40 |
TJ- | Same for VH-home | 21:40 |
TJ- | Ext4 | 21:40 |
Krixvar | Oky | 21:41 |
Krixvar | *okay | 21:41 |
Krixvar | What should I select for "device for boot loader installation?" | 21:41 |
TJ- | Now selecting /dev/mapper/LUKS_boot ...ext4, format, /boot | 21:41 |
Krixvar | I think I've been picking the wrong one which is what's caused it to fail | 21:41 |
TJ- | Boot-loader, hmm, well for EFI here it'll be /dev/vda1 (the ESP partition) . I don't know why it offers /dev/vda since that'd only make sense for a BIOS install | 21:43 |
Krixvar | Yeah, I've tried both options and it fails either way | 21:43 |
TJ- | Trying to install now | 21:45 |
Krixvar | Okay, I'll start mine selecting the efi partition | 21:45 |
TJ- | 74% copying | 21:47 |
Krixvar | Sort of unrelated, but there's no need to tell it to encrypt my home folder since its inside an encrypted partition and will be a single user device, right? | 21:48 |
TJ- | yeah, no point in doubling it | 21:48 |
Krixvar | Be back in a few minutes, mine just finished copying and I didn't have it do updates so it should be done soonish | 21:49 |
Krixvar | thank you so much for the help | 21:49 |
TJ- | In a terminal I'm running the command "tail -f /target/var/log/apt/history.log" | 21:50 |
Krixvar | okay | 21:50 |
Krixvar | Is there something specific to keep an eye out for? | 21:51 |

Krixvar | cool haha | 21:51 |
mr0everywhere | is there a trick to download all dependencies without booting into linux | 21:53 |
Krixvar | woot sitting on language packs -.- | 21:53 |
TJ- | just passed that point | 21:54 |
TJ- | 46% | 21:54 |
Krixvar | I think the computer's connection dropped.. one sec | 21:54 |
Krixvar | this one seems fine so I'm not sure what happened | 21:54 |
TJ- | kernel being installed | 21:56 |
Krixvar | there we go.. for once the wireless was more reliable than wired 0.o | 21:57 |
Krixvar | installing kernel headers and whatnot now | 21:57 |
Krixvar | From our discussion earlier, you said there's a point at which I need to get onto /target and do something right? Or is that not until after the bootloader installs | 22:00 |
TJ- | I'm planning on waiting until the installer complains | 22:00 |
Krixvar | Mine just broke | 22:03 |
TJ- | OK, hit the failure | 22:03 |
Krixvar | "The 'grub-efi-amd64-signed' package failed to install into /target/. Without the GRUB boot loader, the installed system will not boot." | 22:03 |
TJ- | I'm in a terminal now. /target/ is still mounted | 22:03 |
Krixvar | yup | 22:04 |
Krixvar | so as long as I don't hit okay and let the launcher closed I can do it manually right? | 22:04 |
Krixvar | would it make any difference if I mounted the ESP to /target/boot/efi then ran grub-install? | 22:07 |
TJ- | Hang on... I think I have it sorted | 22:08 |
Krixvar | awesome, thanks | 22:08 |

Krixvar | do I need to run this as a shell script? | 22:14 |
TJ- | line by line would be better,. ahhh! you need to start with "sudo -i" to gain root! | 22:15 |
TJ- | sorry, I forgot to grab that from the history | 22:15 |
TJ- | I pulled the bash history files together into one and deleted the extraneous bits so those commands are verbatim | 22:16 |

TJ- | Don't you do this - it may not work! | 22:17 |
Krixvar | so I've never used sudo -i, why doesn't running each command with sudo work but that does? | 22:17 |
mr0everywhere | does anyone know how to share a network connection from windows 8 to kubuntu? | 22:17 |
TJ- | sudo -i makes it easier when there's several commands | 22:17 |
Krixvar | makes sense, I'm just confused why sudo [command] didn't work but it did when I did sudo -i first | 22:18 |
Krixvar | alright, got grub installed, let me know about the reboot! | 22:18 |
TJ- | We may need to force the cryptsetup modules into the initrd | 22:19 |
Krixvar | okay | 22:21 |
Krixvar | Shoot I may have to go in 15-20 minutes unfortunately | 22:21 |
Krixvar | On the arch tutorial they're talking about configuring mkinitcpio, I've never heard of that for ubuntu | 22:23 |
TJ- | No, that's the equiv of update-initramfs | 22:23 |
TJ- | Creates the initial RAM disk (initrd) | 22:23 |
Krixvar | ah | 22:23 |
TJ- | OK, I've got stuck on boot. the GRUB EFI module doesn't appear to have the cryptodisk module built in | 22:24 |
Krixvar | Is that something in the repositories? | 22:24 |
Krixvar | I'm seeing that it should be GRUB_ENABLE_CRYPTODISK=1 instead of GRUB_ENABLE_CRYPTODISK=y? | 22:25 |
TJ- | This suggests the GRUB_ENABLE_CRYPTODISK wasn't acted on | 22:25 |
TJ- | Rebooting into the Live env | 22:26 |
TJ- | No, that is wrong. I've been using it for 2 years now, I'm the one that put the patch for it in GRUB | 22:27 |
Krixvar | No way! Well I suppose you'd know best then :P | 22:28 |
mr0everywhere | is there a way to share or bridge an internet connection from windows 8 to kubuntu? | 22:29 |
TJ- | I'm just finishing off re-creating the chroot again | 22:30 |
Krixvar | Okay | 22:30 |
Krixvar | Did anything need to be done with crypttab? | 22:30 |
Krixvar | Another possibility maybe.. the arch page has a few extra flags on grub-install: | 22:32 |
Krixvar | # grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=grub --recheck | 22:32 |
Krixvar | namely the efi directory seems potentially useful | 22:33 |
TJ- | I'm actually running that command with --verbose now to check | 22:34 |
Krixvar | cool | 22:35 |
TJ- | OK: "grub-install --target=x86_64-efi /dev/vda1 | 22:36 |
TJ- | If you want to see what it does add "-v" | 22:36 |
Krixvar | running now | 22:36 |
Krixvar | Here for a bit more, but are you online often if we aren't able to finish this before I have to go? | 22:37 |
mr0everywhere | is there a way to share an internet connection from a windows 8 computer to kubuntu via ethernet | 22:37 |
TJ- | I'm around quite a bit at times | 22:37 |
Krixvar | Cool | 22:37 |
Krixvar | Okay, the command finished | 22:37 |
Krixvar | mr0everywhere: Didn't see anything practical when I looked quickly. I'm not much of a networking guy, though | 22:37 |
TJ- | I'm checking the log to ensure it inserted the cryptdisk module into grubx64.efi | 22:38 |
Krixvar | okay | 22:38 |
TJ- | looking good ") | 22:39 |
Krixvar | sweet | 22:39 |
TJ- | will do another reboot attempt in a moment | 22:40 |
Krixvar | Thank you | 22:40 |
TJ- | rebooting | 22:40 |
Krixvar | Are there any resources you'd recommend to learn more about grub and possibly developing for it? Lower level software really intrigues me | 22:41 |
TJ- | The source code :) | 22:41 |
Krixvar | Good point ^_^ | 22:42 |
Krixvar | cloned a copy, I'll have to check it out soon :) | 22:44 |
TJ- | It didn't boot fully again... think I'm missing something obvious | 22:45 |
Krixvar | What is it breaking at? | 22:45 |
TJ- | grubx64.efi starts but doesn't have the cryptodisk module built-in apparently - the cryptomount command isn't there anyhow, which is needed to open the encrypted /boot/ | 22:47 |
Krixvar | The only other step a lot of the pages are talking about is stuff involving crypttab | 22:47 |
Krixvar | hmm okay | 22:47 |
TJ- | That's for the OS, not GRUB | 22:48 |
Krixvar | ah gotcha | 22:48 |
TJ- | I've just run GRUB's 'lsmod' and cryptodisk isn't there but crypto is, yet in the build log I saw it included | 22:48 |
Krixvar | weird | 22:48 |
TJ- | So I may have started the wrong grub efi image :D | 22:48 |
Krixvar | unfortunately I need to go for now, I'll check if you're online next time | 22:49 |
Krixvar | thank you so much! | 22:49 |
TJ- | Because I'm using a VM I have to manually boot grub from the EFI shell since the VM can't save EFI variables so there is no EFI boot menu entry retained | 22:49 |
casa | ciaooo a tutti | 22:52 |
mr0everywhere | i have a shared connection coming from a windows computer to my linux computer, but there is no network activity showing between the 2 devices. anybody know how to get the linux computer to play nicely with my windows 8 computer | 23:31 |
Goobley | Hey, I was wondering how stable everyone's been finding 15.04. I moved over about a week ago (because it looks pretty) and have had a load of trouble since. Much worse screen tearing than I've ever had before (even with vsync), plasmashell crashing at least once every 2 hours, and just half an hour ago a bug which required me to delete .kde as I was logging in to a purely black screen (and failsafe wouldn't log in at all). Am I miss | 23:47 |
mr0everywhere | anybody awake in here? | 23:53 |
