ewetHI, I'm still coming across this problem https://plus.google.com/+GrzegorzKarwowski/posts/hqJ2V9ZCC1U . SMB public shares are extremely slow in KDE 5 (Kubuntu 15.04). In the past I worked around it by deactivating kwallet. Setting "any" username/password in System-Settings/Connectivity doesn't work. What am I supposed to do?06:49
=== Malsasa_ is now known as Malsasa
ewetno ideas?07:44
valorieewet: have you searched the bugtrackers?07:47
valorieI've not heard others mention the problem07:48
valorieposting problems/bug reports to G+ seems a long way around the barn, so to speak07:49
valorieno bug # is mentioned in the G+ post07:49
ewetsmbclient is behaving normally btw.07:57
ewetit might be related to this https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dolphin/+bug/550636. But I have really limited knowledge about KDE...07:59
ubottuUbuntu bug 550636 in dolphin (Ubuntu) "Dolphin SMB handling" [Undecided,Confirmed]07:59
=== Malsasa_ is now known as Malsasa
ewetit might not actually just be related, that might be the bug. cifs-utils and smbclient work perfectly fine. It's just Dolphin its authentication mechanism.08:25

BluesKajhoracy, you can't change it he UEFI/BIOS ?15:20

yuriypossibly you are right15:20
BluesKajthen you have sddm by default afaik15:21

BluesKajyuriy, open a terminal if you can , sudo systemctl enable sddm  or drop to a TTY/VT using ctl+alt+F1-F6 , and do the command there, then startx or reboot15:30
BluesKajhoracy, do see the grub menu ok15:30
horacyactuallu im before installing15:31
horacyi just needed an info about that is it working with SB or not15:31
BluesKajhoracy, it should work with secure boot if installed with UEFI method15:32
horacyok thx15:32

cutbudiHello people...may I ask if anyone have any Ideas on how to harden kubuntu?18:56
ikoniaas I told you in #ubuntu18:57
ikoniait is not a generic question18:57
ikoniait requires focus and a bit of background experience18:57
ikoniathe best advice is what I already told you  in #ubuntu18:57
ikonialook at how you are using the system, remove what you don't know and restrict as best as possible access to the apps/services you are using18:58
ikoniasorry, remove what you don't "need" not "know"18:58
cutbudiIkonia: please leavevme be, and stop following me....18:58
ikoniaI'm not following you18:58
ikoniayou're asking the same question  over and over - that is the answer I'm afraid18:59
cutbudiyes i am, but not you....18:59
ikonia?19:00
Tm_Tcutbudi: I can explain the same thing Ikonia just did if that helps19:00
cutbudiWhat ever you see me type dont answer..your begining to be a real pain....I do not wan anything from you...When I initially asked you that same question you were very less informative, and arrogant...now you want to spill your guts out19:02
ikoniait's exactly what I said in #ubuntu19:03
ikoniaalomst word for word19:03
ikoniaif you want help - calm down, listen to the info people are giving you19:03
cutbudiis there an ignore button in this chat room i can put ikonia on19:04
ikoniaI'll solve that for you19:04
cutbudi?19:04
murthy_cutbudi: What do you mean by harden?19:06
ikoniahe can't talk, he's muted at the moment19:07
Tm_Tmurthy_: that means increasing security19:07
murthy_Tm_T: oh, right19:07
murthy_cutbudi: are you a developer?19:08
KrixvarTJ-: okay, so I have the partitions created by Windows (including an efi partition), a LUKS encrypted /boot, and a LUKS encrypted LVM21:05
TJ-Krixvar: I'll dupe that roughly :)21:05
KrixvarAnd a ntfs data partition but I don't think that matters right now haha21:05
TJ-I'll just create small empty partitions to simulate it21:06
Krixvaron a side note, the fact that I can make them all primary partitions is sweeet21:06
Krixvarokay21:06
TJ-'primary' doesn't have any real meaning for GPT21:06
KrixvarYeah, I suppose that's just what the KDE partitioner calls them21:06
TJ-The GPT usually has space for a minimum of 128 partition entries21:06
TJ-Yeah, because they're proper partitions not chained logicals in some sill 'extended' chain21:07
TJ-s/sill/silly/21:07
TJ-Right I'm at the partitioner ... Manual of course21:07
KrixvarYup21:08
KrixvarSo I select the partition I created inside the luks and make it /boot, then the ones inside lvm to appropriate root home etc21:09
TJ-I'm going to use gdisk to create the partitions; this partitioner is sooooo slow because parted re-reads everything each time a change is made21:09
Krixvaruh that's etcetera not /etc21:09
Krixvarsounds good21:09
TJ-Not so... the screen is garbled in the VM21:10
Krixvaruh oh21:10
TJ-All text looks like someone drew the vertical blinds across it21:10
Krixvarhuh.. is there some sort of vm tools you can install? I'm only familiar with vmware really though21:11
TJ-Ahhhh... a real VT sorts it Ctrl+Alt+F121:11
Krixvarhmm?21:11
Krixvarswitching helped? From talking to you I'm being quickly reminded of how much I still have left to learn :P21:12
TJ-That never stops :)21:13
Krixvarhaha that's true21:13
TJ-i'm installing openssh-server in the live environment so I can control it more easily21:13
Krixvarsounds good21:14
Krixvaroh huh so you're supposed to mount the efi partition into /boot apparently?21:14
TJ-The ESP should be at /boot/efi/21:15
KrixvarOkay, so I'd need to mount that before I start the installer?21:15
TJ-I'm not sure; you need to be careful that the installer doesn't try to format /boot/ and hit the ESP as well!21:16
KrixvarI'll make sure not to hit the format button21:17
KrixvarI figure since they're newly created partitions its not needed anyways21:17
TJ-It's not you... I don't trust the installer!21:17
Krixvarheh I agree21:17
TJ-The ESP is already a  FAT32 with boot files in for Windows21:17
Krixvarthe partition manager says its efi21:18
Krixvarthe kubuntu installer doesn't recognize it -.-21:18
Krixvaroh wait it says its fat32 now21:20
Krixvarodd21:20
Krixvarmight have been gdisk that said that21:20
TJ-I'm having a slight argument because I'm not sure what the password is for the kubuntu user! Thought it was "kubuntu" but no21:21
KrixvarI believe its blank21:21
Krixvarin 15.04 at least, I doubt they would have anything set from earlier21:22
KrixvarI mounted efi into /boot/efi but I'm pretty sure the installer's going to tell me to unmount it so I can install to it21:22
TJ-Krixvar: Looking at /etc/shadow it doesn't look like it... on Ubuntu it's usually ubuntu/ubuntu with the user able to do sudo without a password21:22
mr0everywherei am trying to set up a linksys ae6000 wifi dongle on a clean install of kubuntu 15.04 using this tutorial http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/1897 and it pops an error on the make command saying gcc command not found21:23
Krixvarhmm yeah I'm seeing mixed answers about whether its blank or kubuntu21:24
Krixvarmr0everywhere: You can make sure gcc is installed with sudo apt-get install gcc21:24
mr0everywherethe computer it is on has no internet currently to be able to get it21:24
mr0everywherehow would i go about getting it from a windows computer?21:24
geniimr0everywhere: sudo apt-get install build-essential21:24
KrixvarDo you have access to another computer that does? You can manually download it21:24
mr0everywherei have access on my windows computer but no linux21:25
mr0everywherei have been doing everything via usb drive from one to another21:25
geniimr0everywhere: Use a livecd on the windows computer21:25
Krixvarmr0everywhere: genii's suggestion is probably easiest, if for some reason that's not possible you can download it here but you'd have to get all the requirements too http://packages.ubuntu.com/vivid/gcc21:26
KrixvarTJ-: any luck?21:26
TJ-Krixvar: This is the partition layout I've created http://imgur.com/XpecuqR21:26
TJ-Krixvar: ignore the EF02 ... there's not a good choice for luks/dm-crypt21:27
KrixvarTJ-: looks similar enough, main difference is that I have a separate /boot from the lbm21:30
Krixvar*lvm21:30
Krixvarand my efi partition is only 100mb because its tied between all the windows partitions and the partitioner kept crashing when I tried to move things to expand it21:30
TJ-Krixvar: me too. see http://paste.ubuntu.com/11817541/21:33
Krixvarah cool, looks good then21:35
mr0everywherei have a package and all of its dependencies on a usb drive, how do i go about installing them? they are all .deb files and there are some circular dependencies that i noticed21:35
Krixvarassuming the space in efi isn't an issue, I haven't read up too much on how much goes in it21:35
TJ-Krixvar: Commands issued so far http://paste.ubuntu.com/11817549/21:36
TJ-Krixvar: 128MB would be sufficient for ESP21:36
KrixvarTJ-: only have 104 because Windows is weird :/21:37
TJ-Krixvar: starting the installer now21:37
KrixvarOkay, I'm sitting at the manual partitioning21:37
TJ-There now21:38
KrixvarCool, so I'll set lvm partitions to the right stuff, skipping swap since it fails consistently with this installer21:39
TJ-I've selected "/dev/mapper/VG-rootfs",  pressed Change, Use as "Ext4 ...", Format, Mount point "/"21:40
KrixvarSame here, should boot be ext4 or 2? The arch page was saying 2 for some reason21:40
TJ-Same for VH-home21:40
TJ-Ext421:40
KrixvarOky21:41
Krixvar*okay21:41
KrixvarWhat should I select for "device for boot loader installation?"21:41
TJ-Now selecting /dev/mapper/LUKS_boot ...ext4, format, /boot21:41
KrixvarI think I've been picking the wrong one which is what's caused it to fail21:41
TJ-Boot-loader, hmm, well for EFI here it'll be /dev/vda1 (the ESP partition) . I don't know why it offers /dev/vda since that'd only make sense for a BIOS install21:43
KrixvarYeah, I've tried both options and it fails either way21:43
TJ-Trying to install now21:45
KrixvarOkay, I'll start mine selecting the efi partition21:45
TJ-74% copying21:47
KrixvarSort of unrelated, but there's no need to tell it to encrypt my home folder since its inside an encrypted partition and will be a single user device, right?21:48
TJ-yeah, no point in doubling it21:48
KrixvarBe back in a few minutes, mine just finished copying and I didn't have it do updates so it should be done soonish21:49
Krixvarthank you so much for the help21:49
TJ-In a terminal I'm running the command "tail -f /target/var/log/apt/history.log"21:50
Krixvarokay21:50
KrixvarIs there something specific to keep an eye out for?21:51
TJ-I just like to see *precisely* where its at21:51
Krixvarcool haha21:51
mr0everywhereis there a trick to download all dependencies without booting into linux21:53
Krixvarwoot sitting on language packs -.-21:53
TJ-just passed that point21:54
TJ-46%21:54
KrixvarI think the computer's connection dropped.. one sec21:54
Krixvarthis one seems fine so I'm not sure what happened21:54
TJ-kernel being installed21:56
Krixvarthere we go.. for once the wireless was more reliable than wired 0.o21:57
Krixvarinstalling kernel headers and whatnot now21:57
KrixvarFrom our discussion earlier, you said there's a point at which I need to get onto /target and do something right? Or is that not until after the bootloader installs22:00
TJ-I'm planning on waiting until the installer complains22:00
KrixvarMine just broke22:03
TJ-OK, hit the failure22:03
Krixvar"The 'grub-efi-amd64-signed' package failed to install into /target/. Without the GRUB boot loader, the installed system will not boot."22:03
TJ-I'm in a terminal now. /target/ is still mounted22:03
Krixvaryup22:04
Krixvarso as long as I don't hit okay and let the launcher closed I can do it manually right?22:04
Krixvarwould it make any difference if I mounted the ESP to /target/boot/efi then ran grub-install?22:07
TJ-Hang on... I think I have it sorted22:08
Krixvarawesome, thanks22:08
TJ-OK, yes, just completing update-grub now22:08
Krixvarcool22:09
TJ-I'm assembling the command history for you22:10

KrixvarGetting a syntax error near unexpected token 'do'22:14
Krixvardo I need to run this as a shell script?22:14
TJ-line by line would be better,. ahhh! you need to start with "sudo -i" to gain root!22:15
TJ-sorry, I forgot to grab that from the history22:15
TJ-I pulled the bash history files together into one and deleted the extraneous bits so those commands are verbatim22:16
TJ-I'm trying a restart now22:16
KrixvarAwesome, I'm running grub-install22:17
TJ-Don't you do this - it may not work!22:17
Krixvarso I've never used sudo -i, why doesn't running each command with sudo work but that does?22:17
mr0everywheredoes anyone know how to share a network connection from windows 8 to kubuntu?22:17
TJ-sudo -i makes it easier when there's several commands22:17
Krixvarmakes sense, I'm just confused why sudo [command] didn't work but it did when I did sudo -i first22:18
Krixvaralright, got grub installed, let me know about the reboot!22:18
TJ-We may need to force the cryptsetup modules into the initrd22:19
Krixvarokay22:21
KrixvarShoot I may have to go in 15-20 minutes unfortunately22:21
KrixvarOn the arch tutorial they're talking about configuring mkinitcpio, I've never heard of that for ubuntu22:23
TJ-No, that's the equiv of update-initramfs22:23
TJ-Creates the initial RAM disk (initrd)22:23
Krixvarah22:23
TJ-OK, I've got stuck on boot. the GRUB EFI module doesn't appear to have the cryptodisk module built in22:24
KrixvarIs that something in the repositories?22:24
KrixvarI'm seeing that it should be GRUB_ENABLE_CRYPTODISK=1 instead of GRUB_ENABLE_CRYPTODISK=y?22:25
TJ-This suggests the GRUB_ENABLE_CRYPTODISK wasn't acted on22:25
TJ-Rebooting into the Live env22:26
TJ-No, that is wrong. I've been using it for 2 years now, I'm the one that put the patch for it in GRUB22:27
KrixvarNo way! Well I suppose you'd know best then :P22:28
mr0everywhereis there a way to share or bridge an internet connection from windows 8 to kubuntu?22:29
TJ-I'm just finishing off re-creating the chroot again22:30
KrixvarOkay22:30
KrixvarDid anything need to be done with crypttab?22:30
KrixvarAnother possibility maybe.. the arch page has a few extra flags on grub-install:22:32
Krixvar# grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=grub --recheck22:32
Krixvarnamely the efi directory seems potentially useful22:33
TJ-I'm actually running that command with --verbose now to check22:34
Krixvarcool22:35
TJ-OK: "grub-install --target=x86_64-efi /dev/vda122:36
TJ-If you want to see what it does add "-v"22:36
Krixvarrunning now22:36
KrixvarHere for a bit more, but are you online often if we aren't able to finish this before I have to go?22:37
mr0everywhereis there a way to share an internet connection from a windows 8 computer to kubuntu via ethernet22:37
TJ-I'm around quite a bit at times22:37
KrixvarCool22:37
KrixvarOkay, the command finished22:37
Krixvarmr0everywhere: Didn't see anything practical when I looked quickly. I'm not much of a networking guy, though22:37
TJ-I'm checking the log to ensure it inserted the cryptdisk module into grubx64.efi22:38

TJ-It didn't boot fully again... think I'm missing something obvious22:45
KrixvarWhat is it breaking at?22:45
TJ-grubx64.efi starts but doesn't have the cryptodisk module built-in apparently - the cryptomount command isn't there anyhow, which is needed to open the encrypted /boot/22:47
KrixvarThe only other step a lot of the pages are talking about is stuff involving crypttab22:47
Krixvarhmm okay22:47
TJ-That's for the OS, not GRUB22:48
Krixvarah gotcha22:48
TJ-I've just run GRUB's 'lsmod' and cryptodisk isn't there but crypto is, yet in the build log I saw it included22:48
Krixvarweird22:48
TJ-So I may have started the wrong grub efi image :D22:48
Krixvarunfortunately I need to go for now, I'll check if you're online next time22:49
Krixvarthank you so much!22:49
TJ-Because I'm using a VM I have to manually boot grub from the EFI shell since the VM can't save EFI variables so there is no EFI boot menu entry retained22:49
casaciaooo a tutti22:52
mr0everywherei have a shared connection coming from a windows computer to my linux computer, but there is no network activity showing between the 2 devices. anybody know how to get the linux computer to play nicely with my windows 8 computer23:31
GoobleyHey, I was wondering how stable everyone's been finding 15.04. I moved over about a week ago (because it looks pretty) and have had a load of trouble since. Much worse screen tearing than I've ever had before (even with vsync), plasmashell crashing at least once every 2 hours, and just half an hour ago a bug which required me to delete .kde as I was logging in to a purely black screen (and failsafe wouldn't log in at all). Am I miss23:47
mr0everywhereanybody awake in here?23:53
