RoguehorseMan, quiet day today00:52
ianorlinyeah it is like that a lot00:53
ianorlinI did two testcases today00:53
RoguehorseI had a recruiter call me and say "How are you doing today" to which I replied "Horrible, my health is in the shitter"00:56
RoguehorseIt took him off guard but he kept going anyway00:56
RoguehorseFunny, the dude just called and I told him I need 2 or 3 days reote and possible whelchair accessable01:00
Roguehorseremote01:00
Roguehorsebah ... wheelchair01:00
Roguehorsethey're dumbfounded01:00
ianorlinI don't think they understand invisible disabilities either01:01
Roguehorseno...most people don't01:01
DonkeyHoteivisible disabilities aren't well-accommodated either01:01
Roguehorseand I'm so doped on my meds I'm just all up in them about it01:01
DonkeyHoteidid you have an accident?01:02
Roguehorsemight as ewll take the bull by the horns and get it all up in there01:02
Roguehorsenope, born with thiscondition01:02
Roguehorseusually relapses come and go but not this time01:02
DonkeyHoteiyou weren't in a wheelchair last i saw you01:02
RoguehorseI was not01:03
RoguehorseI had a relapse the first of June01:03
RoguehorseI've been at home since01:03
DonkeyHoteiwhat is it, exactly?01:03
RoguehorseI can walk a little bit but not far and not for very long without a lot of pain01:03
Roguehorseno WAY could I be on my feet or walk around all day01:04
ianorlinI have had job interviews where a sign said do not enter and there was no were else to enter in the building and I lost it01:04
DonkeyHoteiis it something like reiter syndrome?01:05
Roguehorsehttp://www.unckidneycenter.org/kidneyhealthlibrary/minimalchange.html01:05
darthrobot`Title: [Minimal Change Disease]01:05
RoguehorseI take huge amounts of Prednisone to help keep it in check01:06
Roguehorsehttp://www.webmd.com/drugs/2/drug-6007-9383/prednisone-oral/prednisone-oral/details/list-sideeffects01:06
darthrobot`Title: [Common and Rare Side Effects for prednisone oral]01:06
Roguehorseall my life it has always gone into remission after starting Prednisone oral in about 10 to 14 days and the Drs taper me off the meds, life goes on01:08
Roguehorsethis time I've been on the meds for almost 7 weeks and I'm still spilling protein with severe adema (swelling) in the feet and ankles01:08
RoguehorseI need a biopsy done and start thinking about serious life changes01:09
DonkeyHoteithe page you linked does not suggest it could be improved through lifestyle01:10
Roguehorseit can't01:10
Roguehorseit is what it is and that;s it01:10
Roguehorsesome lucky people outgrow it...I didn't01:11
DonkeyHoteihowever, everyone knows health is better after quitting smoking01:11
Roguehorseyeah BULLSHIT! Keeps me F*ing SANE!01:12
ianorlinRoguehorse: please don't use allcaps and cuss in here01:13
Roguehorseyeah, sorry01:13
Roguehorseanyway, the Prednisone really messes with my mood and psychology01:14
Roguehorselike I didn't already need counseling01:14
DonkeyHoteiianorlin: wHaT aBoUt CaMeL cAsE?01:14
Roguehorselets throw gas on a fire01:14
* ianorlin has listening to a song within a song in a virtual machine01:14
RoguehorseI know smoking is bad and I've almost quit01:15
Roguehorsedown to a pack a week01:15
Roguehorseon theother hand I'm so shakey and irritable no one can stand to get near me and I really don't care either01:16
Roguehorsesnus helped a bit and I have an NJOY electric that helps too01:17
Roguehorseand no, I'm not going to consider prescription pot ... I have a kid01:19
Roguehorsenot like cigarrettes are any better I guess01:19
Roguehorseplus I probably wouldn't be able to write a lick of code on prescription pot...then I'd be completely doomed01:21
DonkeyHoteitobacco and pot do very different things anyway, it's not like either could substitute for the other01:21
Roguehorsethe pot would help with the pain though...but acetaminophen works for me01:21
DonkeyHoteiplenty of people code decently on pot and still others can't without tobacci01:22
Roguehorsethe nicotein counters the Prednisone...at least for me01:22
Roguehorseyeah, I go through a lot of coffee and smokes01:23
DonkeyHoteiacetominophen is usually pretty useless for me but i can't take much else in that category01:23
Roguehorsedinner is up..gotta roll01:25
RoguehorseI knew this time was coming all my life and that's why I went back to school to plan for it01:30
RoguehorseI was hoping to be in a position by now that would be able to accomodate but no luck01:31
Roguehorsenow I'm on temporary MediCal and trying to deal with that01:32
RoguehorseOhlone dropped my Fall course so I have no job to go back to01:32
RoguehorseI filed for SDI but I think I have to change that and file for unemployment01:32
DonkeyHoteiyou can do both01:33
Roguehorseoh, I thought I couldn't01:33
DonkeyHoteiit's possible, within limits01:34
Roguehorsewell, in my current state, unless some miracle comes around, I basically can't work anymore01:34
DonkeyHoteiunemployment assumes you not only can but are actively trying to01:34
DonkeyHoteiif that's not the case, it's barking up the wrong tree01:35
Roguehorsewell, I keep applying, and if they can keep me off my feet or provide wheelchair type access, maybe remote work, I "could" work01:35
DonkeyHoteihence the possibility of both01:36
RoguehorseIt's not "impossible" for me to work, it's just really narrow conditions to accomodate01:36
Roguehorseso that's where I'm at01:36
DonkeyHoteidisabilities do narrow the conditions no matter what they are01:37
Roguehorseyeah, they do01:37
DonkeyHoteisometimes so much that finding any opening within the conditions requires incredible luck01:38
Roguehorseyeah, and what am I supposed to do for income while I keep looking?01:39
ianorlinand employment tends to depend on past employment01:39
RoguehorseI was an instructor at Ohlone last01:40
* ianorlin really prefers reporitng bugs to applying for jobs01:40
Roguehorselol! Yeah01:40
DonkeyHoteiif you manage to get ssdi, there are "employment networks" for recipients that basically supply accommodations externally to actual employers01:41
Roguehorseok, I don't know what that means01:42
DonkeyHoteilike if your regular wheelchair is insufficient for having a job and you need a different kind of wheelchair for it, they get you it01:43
Roguehorseah, ok, yeah ... probably going to want that01:44
DonkeyHoteiyou'd need ssdi first01:45
Roguehorsesad part is I'm going to have to think about replacing the mustang I guess ... it's long paid for though01:45
DonkeyHoteiand that means you need a total of at least ten years full-time employment in your past01:46
Roguehorsedon't know how I'm going to haul around a wheelchair01:46
Roguehorsedude, I've been working since 198401:47
DonkeyHoteiwhen my better half was in a wheelchair, no automotive modification was needed, we just folded it up an put it in the back each time she got in the car01:48
Roguehorseone with the big wheels I can do myself?01:49
DonkeyHoteii had to do it for her of course01:49
Roguehorsethere is no way I can fit one of those in my trunk01:50
DonkeyHoteiit didn't fit in my trunk at the time either, hence "in the back"01:50
Roguehorsegrrrr...my head is hurting from all this...I'm going to go lay on the bed for a while01:50
Roguehorsetime to take my meds anyway01:51
Roguehorsettyl01:51
RoguehorseI've got it! I can teach programming to the mobile challenged so they can work again04:31
DonkeyHoteiexcept that to get hired for remote jobs like that, one needs experience, not simply knowledge04:35
Roguehorsejust find a way through the edd center04:36
RoguehorseI have a degree in SE and experience teaching04:37
DonkeyHoteiit's not about the teaching part, it's about utility to the students04:38
DonkeyHoteiif they don't have the experience, being taught something won't get them that job04:39
Roguehorseyeah, the system would have to be able to hook that part up04:43
Roguehorsethere would have to be participating employers04:44
RoguehorseI could probably hook something like this up04:45
Roguehorsehmm?04:45
DonkeyHoteiwhen initiatives like this have been successful in the past, it was because they were initiated by the employers04:46
Roguehorsehttp://www.roguehorse.com/index.html04:47
darthrobot`Title: [Error reading title]04:47
Roguehorseit's a thought anyway04:56
Roguehorsewhen I go to my next Dr visit, I'm going to talk to him about the project .. maybe he can point me in the right direcion12:56
RoguehorseGeez ... too many projects12:56
Roguehorsethere are a lot of good people, who like me, end up with challenges that force them to change careers and some employers are sympathetic to that15:47
Roguehorseveterans and regular, everyday, people15:48
RoguehorseI think it's a good goal and a doable thing...testing would have to be done becuase not everyone is going to have aptitude for programming or remote administration skills15:51
Roguehorsebut those who show the capability "could" be trained and be able to earn a living again15:52
geom_Roguehorse:  I sure like your attitude, wanting to do something useful.  I think it is great.  I am sorry to hear that you are not well.16:17
RoguehorseI try to think of positive projects that are beneficial to people, I like helping in that way, I like project management16:21
Roguehorseyeah, I've lived with this condition all my life but this time around is a bit more serious16:22
RoguehorseI guess my number wasjust finally up16:22
Roguehorsewas hoping to have both degrees done and a good job that I would still be able to do while sick16:23
RoguehorseI can still finish my Masters, but Network Admin I think is out and MBA Project Management in16:24
Roguehorsetoo bad, big need for Linux System Admins, but when your body is broke.....?? Who needs that guy16:25
RoguehorseThe job part is turning out to be more tricky than I thought too so I'm trying to think alternatively16:27
akkI wish there were more jobs that were flex time/part time. There are so many talented people with issues that make them unable to work a 9-5x5 regular shift.16:30
akk(even aside from physical limitations like lifting, crawling under desks etc.)16:31
Roguehorseyeah, there are those places where one can put themselves up for bid but I've never tried them16:33
Roguehorseit's hard to find a regular account with someone who will throw some consistant bones16:33
geom_I sure do understand how you guys feel as I have moderate adult ADHD and a lot of employers don't understand.16:34
geom_On the other hand, I work for an accounting and tax office and I am able to see into many different businesses, close up and personal like.16:34
Roguehorseof course, what I really need is the insurance, that's even *harder* to find16:34
akkInsurance in the US is such a terrible mess.16:35
geom_It is VERY hard for them to manage productivity when an employee is on again and off again.  Everything is about productivity now.  Productivity is money.  If they are productive and can't respond fast they lose business and are then out of business themselves.16:36
RoguehorseI get the adverts from the insurance companies to come work for them...might look16:36
Roguehorsegeom_: yep, pretty much16:37
Roguehorseeverything is JIT (just in time)16:38
akkMost programming projects I've worked on have gone months or even years. It really wouldn't have mattered if someone had to have a few days off here and there.16:43
geom_There are such jobs out there, they are just hard to find.  Mostly going to be done by referral and recommendation.  Get lots of referrals relating to how you like to finish things, on time, from references.  That will help.16:46
RoguehorseI think the MeRML project is going to take a year or two to get into beta then it will be maintained for a long time16:48
Roguehorseof course pushing it into other platforms is going to take a while too16:49
RoguehorseWe see a lot of people come around with these really "high tech" ideas using containers and microkernels etc..and they are cool16:52
Roguehorsebut I don't want to lose sight of the "average" person....the litttle end user16:52
geom_Hey guys, interesting discussion.16:54
geom_I have to go though.  Got to get to the office.16:54
ianorlinyeah I have heard people call for more maintainers but how do you teach someone to be a maintainer?17:27
ianorlinI don't think computer science courses as I know, really cover that well and is something that quite important17:27
