whollyjordan_I'm learning the basics of running a linux server (ubuntu.) I want to get feedback on whether it would be considered irresponsible of me to setup and manage websites on a linode.com VPS? No email server. Just a web server. I have a tech background but not in servers. No idea if this is considered a big no no or not for beginners?14:03
fcefanwhollyjordan_: "Just a webserver" is not that easy. You need to choose the webserver (Apache, Lighttpd, Nginx) and configure it accordingly for HTTPS, PHP and the like14:38

mojtabaDoes anybody know how can I print specific emails from command line? (and also check for new emails all the time?) basically I have a gmail account and I want to be able to print automatically all receiving emails with specific subject.14:48
jertomojtaba: I don't see how your question is related to ubuntu server14:57
ogra_jerto, it is a printserver :)15:02
jertoogra_: I don't know anything about print servers ;-). I guess it's a simple Cron task to set up though.15:11

tewardanyone know what the minimum specs are to run a Landscape Dedicated Server (personal license)16:38
LukeI'm trying to run "systemd --user" commands but everything fails because the user dbus isn't running. Is this correct or should there be a dbus already running for the user?17:27
Lukewhat's the proper way to start the dbus user instance?17:28

mrteemy server has two network cards and i assigned openvpn to the secondary one. How can i see what it’s outside ip address is?18:25
enleeten/sbin/ifconfig18:26
enleetenor if you're behind a nat, google for whats my ip address18:26
mrteei am behind a nat… i tried curl ifconfig.co but it only shows me the one of my primary interface18:27
enleetenyou could try using links218:30
enleetencli browser :)18:30
enleetenI was thinking traceroute18:30
sarnoldmrtee: you can use curl --interface to select which local addrfess to use as a source18:32
mrteethe syntax would be curl —interface em1 ifconfig.co ???18:34
sarnold--interface18:35
sarnoldand if you've configured your openvpn to use a tunnel, and you want to test the other peer's address, you'd use whatever tunnel you configured18:36
mrteei signed up for a VPN, all i did was download their config and then load openvpn with —local18:36
enleetenif you're the client you don't need to know your external ip18:37
enleetenunless they require it (e.g. for opening a port)18:37
mrteewell it’s more out of couriosity really18:37

linuxgec1ohey guys.  i tried this question in #ubuntu, and they seemed to think you guys would be better suited to help. I'm trying start a pxe install of ubuntu from a non-ubuntu pxe server. i have ubuntu iso's, and i have files in what i think are the right places.    but i get kernel panics on pxe boot. anyone able to help me get the files/options right to get a working install?19:03
LukeGuys i think i've run into a ubuntu specific systemd error: http://askubuntu.com/questions/650665/how-to-use-systemd-user-instance19:12
Lukemy suspicion is that ubuntu isn't set up properly19:12
sarnoldLuke: please file a bug in launchpad if you  think you've found a bug19:13
sarnoldLuke: ubuntu-bug systemd   ought to do the  right thing19:13
Lukesarnold: ok thank you19:13
Lukei'm not 100% certain it's a bug yet. i'm not sure exactly what the proper behavior is. but gentoo, for example. does it differently19:14
Lukei'm looking for confirmation it's a bug basically19:14
sarnoldLuke: systemd is new enough to us that there's probalby only a few people who could say, and the easiest way to get their feedback is a bug report ;) if it's a bug, they'll deal with it there, if it is n't a bug, hopefully they'll explain why before closing :)19:16

ubottuLaunchpad bug 1476364 in systemd (Ubuntu) "“systemd --user” instance can't find d-bus" [Undecided,New]19:20
sarnoldLuke: very nice19:21
Lukesarnold: seems like a big oversight if it is a bug though... lots of people use user-level upstart for example and systemd is now default19:23

heloshould rescue mode on the server installer have bash?20:40
sarnoldprobably20:41
sarnolddash at a minimum20:41
jamespagecoreycb, congrats!20:41
coreycbjamespage, thanks!20:41
heloit apparently does not have dash or bash20:42
heloor fsck -.-20:42
geniiPerhaps you're confusing grub prompt with rescue prompt20:43
heloheh, no.20:43
heloi'm familiar with the ncurses interface (from which i selected rescue mode without root)20:45
geniiThe /bin/sh should point to dash, yes20:50
=== alai1-afk is now known as alai1
helosh may be dash, but there is no dash21:35
helooh well, i was just using the server installer as a bootable custom root installer21:36
helothe live desktop works well enough21:36
FunnyLookinHatHey guys - what's the simplest way to get one of these images booted after applying cloud-localds to it?  http://cloud-images.ubuntu.com/trusty/current/21:43

YamakasY_any knows if I can set LANG in puppet.conf ?22:23
FunnyLookinHatLuke, yo!22:30
FunnyLookinHatSorry - doing like - a dozen things at once...22:30
FunnyLookinHatlhoerste ?22:31
TzunamiiYamakasY_: LC_ALL=<change me> LANG=<change me> service puppet start22:33
YamakasY_Tzunamii: doesn't work22:34
YamakasY_Tzunamii: I need to set it in the init.d file22:35
TzunamiiYamakasY_: What did you substitute <change me> with?22:35
YamakasY_en_US.UTF-822:35
YamakasY_Tzunamii: it's a known issue22:36
YamakasY_Tzunamii: https://tickets.puppetlabs.com/browse/SERVER-77922:36
sarnoldewww. gross.22:37
YamakasY_sarnold: wazzup ?22:38
sarnoldhey YamakasY_ :)22:38
sarnoldYamakasY_: that's some ugly looking errors..22:38
YamakasY_sarnold: yes and I already know it for months and everyone thought I was nuts22:38
YamakasY_now you see this error popping up everywhere22:39
FunnyLookinHatOK - So it looks like uvtool is the best way to test cloud images... but it seems to require root to do everything.22:39
FunnyLookinHatAnd it's a big buggy - like it wouldn't attach my ssh keys correctly.22:39
YamakasY_sarnold: and it seems I can only set the lang in /etc/init.d/puppet22:40
sarnoldFunnyLookinHat: I'd hope being in the libvirtd group would suffice22:40
sarnoldYamakasY_: yeah, the environment variable needs to be set before the program starts22:41
YamakasY_sarnold: yap, so ALL doesn't do shit ?22:42
sarnoldYamakasY_: you may also have some success if you use locale-gen to create the locales that your system is missing22:42
YamakasY_sarnold: yeah tried that, doesn't work out22:42
sarnolddang22:42
YamakasY_or did I need to restart puppet ?22:42
sarnoldno idea about LC_ALL22:42
FunnyLookinHatsarnold, sudo usermod -a -G libvirtd funnylookinhat && uvt-kvm create test22:42
sarnoldYamakasY_: yeah, you would need to restart it22:42
FunnyLookinHatThat yields: uvt-kvm: error: libvirt: Failed to connect socket to '/var/run/libvirt/libvirt-sock': Permission denied22:42
YamakasY_sarnold: you shitty person, why didn't you told me that earlier ? :P22:42
sarnoldFunnyLookinHat: you don't automatically get added to the group; use newgrp libvirtd to spawn a new shell with the new group22:43
sarnoldYamakasY_: lol :)22:43
YamakasY_sarnold: ok, let's hug and share the feeling22:43
FunnyLookinHatsarnold, ah duh - yes, thank you.22:45
YamakasY_sarnold: you!22:50
YamakasY_sarnold: ok fixed22:54
YamakasY_but the gen and so on doesn't work22:54
sarnoldYamakasY_: I wonder why :/22:55
YamakasY_sarnold: me also22:58
YamakasY_I know my gender tho22:58
YamakasY_gen/gender22:58
YamakasY_sarnold: what about env in the puppet.conf ?23:00
sarnoldYamakasY_: that's unlikely to work; most programs try to initialize the locale immediately so error messages are properly localized23:00
sarnoldYamakasY_: maybe they added some support for it, but I would be surprised23:01
YamakasY_sarnold: also the PATH is set in init.d for puppet23:02
YamakasY_sarnold: this is weird, I remove LANG from environments and restart puppet and it still works :S23:05
sarnoldYamakasY_: how did you remove LANG from the environment, and how did you restart puppet?23:06
YamakasY_sarnold: just removed the line and did a puppet restart23:06
sarnolddoes puppet restart use the init script to restart puppet? or does it just re-exec puppet?23:07
YamakasY_I just stopped and started it again.. testing now23:07
YamakasY_sarnold: same, doing a reboot23:08
YamakasY_sarnold: ok, than it happens again23:13
YamakasY_where does export place the export ?23:13
sarnoldYamakasY_: 'export' in the current shell? or in an init.d script?23:17
YamakasY_sarnold: no it's temp in current sheel23:23
YamakasY_shell23:23
YamakasY_shall I puppetize it or not ?23:23
sarnoldYamakasY_: then it gets set into the envirnment of the processes spawned by that shell23:23
YamakasY_yap23:24
YamakasY_ok, so option... puppetize it I think ?23:24
sarnold.. do you mean, try to write a puppet recipe to fix the /etc/init.d/puppet on all your systems to set them to e.g. LANG=C?23:25
YamakasY_sarnold: yes but than in /etc/environment23:26
YamakasY_I think that is most wise23:26
YamakasY_most if UTF-823:26
sarnoldYamakasY_: /etc/environment is only used by PAM services with pam_env -- it shouldn't have any effect on services started via sysvinit scripts23:27
YamakasY_sarnold: I restart puppet after it ;)23:27
YamakasY_sarnold: oh btw it does23:27
YamakasY_for puppet23:27
sarnoldit does? that's odd.23:28
YamakasY_is it ?23:28
h0mer_Hopefully im in the right place, but is this the right channel to ask questions about openstack/ubuntu/landscape?23:52
h0mer_i guess not23:57
