[14:55] walked into room with home server to hear the sound of a disk failing. [14:55] :( [14:55] it sounds just terrible. [14:55] but the system is running fine and well [14:57] ugh, and sudo pvs hangs. [14:57] OMG you still use spinning rust?! [14:58] http://i.memecaptain.com/gend_images/pWZ-hg.jpg [14:58] of course. [14:58] how else am I going to afford 12TB+ of storage? [14:59] holy crap, its making TERRIBLE sounds. [14:59] sounds like beeps. [15:02] oh wow, its the ST2000DM001-9YN1 and not the samsung. [15:02] cursed baracuda [15:04] got sudo back? [15:07] huh? [15:08] 14:57 < jrwren> ugh, and sudo pvs hangs. [15:08] oh, pvs [15:08] I thought it said "sudo privs" [15:08] oh yes, it came back. [15:08] nvm :) [15:08] the beeps are so weird. I've never heard a HD failure cause system beeps [15:08] its rather annoying. [15:08] * greg-g pushes down on the french press plunger, time for coffee [15:10] <3 [15:10] * jrwren sips his automatic drip and savors [15:18] Good morning [15:18] jrwren: No fun [15:19] cmaloney: luckily, hte disk was not in use. I did pvremove on it a while ago because of crazy SMART errors. [15:19] cmaloney: err, no, I ram pvmove. pvremove would fail for some lvm metadata reason. [15:19] now that the disk ACTUALLY failed, pvremove just worked. [15:19] *sigh* [15:19] watch, I'll probably reboot and LVM will totally fail, not finding metadata. [15:20] Heh [15:21] I've not used lvm for RAID. NEver though to use it for that. [15:23] cmaloney: its rather nice because its all in one system. [15:23] cmaloney: I don't think it performs QUITE as fast as MD, but really, maybe it does since they are both abstactions on device mapper anyway. [15:23] cmaloney: its great because you lvcreate and say "mirror" and now you have 2 copies across devices for that partition [15:24] and its LVM, so you are carving chunks out of hte pool, not worrying about matching PV sizes. [15:24] cmaloney: I'm pretty sure that this is partly how synology does its mirroring [15:24] anyway, I got the idea from synology [15:26] Ah, neat [15:27] I'm using md for mine so I'm a bit committed at the moment. :) [15:27] :) [15:27] I know some sysadmin purists (I like to call them old curmudgeons) poo-poo this approach, but it has worked really well for me. [15:28] and I'm rather excited to add a cache disk. [15:28] The only difference between an experienced sysadmin and a punter is the number of bite marks in their ass [15:28] cmaloney: hahaha! true [15:55] luckily, my worst disk experience so far has been the early-2.6 kernel xfs bug. [15:57] jrwren: are you @sadserver? https://twitter.com/planetpuppet/status/626047828687597572 [17:51] cscheib: nope, what is sadserver? [17:51] gah [17:51] sent wrong link [17:52] https://twitter.com/sadserver/status/626047963807227905 [17:59] cscheib: hahaha, luckily all filesystems are operation, its just a disk that finally went boom. [18:00] Hm, it's a 15" 5lb tablet http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/inspiron-15-7558-laptop/pd?ref=PD_OC [18:01] jrwren: sadserver is like the marvin the android from HHGTG of sysadmin twitter accounts [18:01] cscheib: hahahaha [18:02] cscheib: brain the size of a planet! [18:02] brousch: $549 isn't bad at all [18:02] i7 for $850 [18:03] i wonder how slow a pentium is. [18:03] do they have a 13" 2-in-1 ? [18:04] ooh they do, but it costs more :( [18:05] Core M [18:05] oh no, its even less. [18:05] I have a Core M. I'm not impressed with its speed, especially graphics [18:05] more my style: http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/inspiron-13-7348-laptop/pd?oc=cai137nw10b5018p&model_id=inspiron-13-7348-laptop [18:05] IntelĀ® PentiumĀ® Processor 3825U [18:05] 13.3-inch HD (1366 x 768) [18:05] so... faster than a macbook, but not by much, still not fast enough to use google hangouts and something else at the same time. [18:06] yeah, that low res must be why it is so cheap. [18:06] man dell's website sucks. [18:07] i cannot find the 13" equiv screen to what you linked. [18:07] http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/inspiron-13-7352-laptop/pd?ref=PD_OC [18:07] oooh, they have an 11" 2-in-1 for $329! [18:07] how did you find that? [18:08] i wonder if that $329 would run ubuntu touch nicely? [18:09] wow, no 5Ghz wifi, and a spinning rust disk. its like they aren't even trying. [18:11] heh [18:11] dell? not trying? say it ain't so! [18:12] They're trying, just not very hard [18:13] greg-g: hehehe [18:13] sorry, i'm sometimes known as captain obvious [18:15] I got Kubuntu 15.04 running on lenovo miix 2 11, but it only recognized single touch [21:35] <3 SATA hot swap [21:51] cursed out of warranty drive!
