daftykinsoverflyer: 169.254.x.x - that shows that your wifi link has failed as it has given itself an APIPA address.00:02

daftykinsoverflyer: start simple. try "ping 192.168.2.1" if that's your router's IP. (is it?) use ctrl+C to stop00:16

baizonLonelyDanbo: the version is important there. And what is your problem?05:57
LonelyDanbouhm... I should get the specific text. I don't remember.05:58
LonelyDanbofor Steam, "OpenGL GLX extention not supported by display".05:58
baizonLonelyDanbo: well i had trouble with intel graphics on 14.04, but they were gone with 14.10 and 15.0405:59
LonelyDanbofor Wine... it's tricker. I did an apt-get update and apt-get I forget what, and the game I had that used to crash 3/4 times now crashes 4/4 times when trying to start.05:59
LonelyDanbo... Oh. Yeah I'm on Xubuntu 14.04.06:00
LonelyDanboNo one seemed to suggest that a higher version would be a good idea, and the only reason against it was "LTS".06:00
LonelyDanboAlso I'm on an AMD chip.06:01
baizonLonelyDanbo: well i had to upgrade to the newest wine1.7 because had trouble with the 1.6.06:01
baizonLonelyDanbo: well for gaming i would suggest to use the newest version of *buntu06:02
LonelyDanboAny difference between Ubuntu and Xubuntu? The one person giving me advice said they're not the same and at least Steam is designed for Ubuntu.06:03
baizonLonelyDanbo: well xubuntu uses xfce and xfwm, ubuntu uses gnome and compiz, but it should not be the problem if something bad happens06:04
LonelyDanboI also heard trying to update versions of the OS can break things so I guess I need to install a new OS on another partition regardless...06:04
baizonLonelyDanbo: it depends, but yes i do always a fresh install of my xubuntu machine06:05

LonelyDanboso much for "LTS" being reliable.06:06
baizonLonelyDanbo: it is, but not for everything. Games need many updates and stuff.06:07
ronburgendyI just wish they had more support for drivers from AMD06:07
LonelyDanboI guess when I get things working I should not update. :(06:07
LonelyDanboI had it working for over a year and updating is what broke it all.06:08
baizonronburgendy: +1 sadly :(06:08
ronburgendythats why I make a small 35gig partition on the side with windows 7 for csgo lol06:08
LonelyDanbowell... not Steam. I didn't try installing Steam before, so I'm not sure if it was unbroken then.06:08
baizonLonelyDanbo: what ronburgendy just said. I need 20 min for a fresh install06:08
baizonwith that partition i mean06:08
baizonnot windows 7 :P06:09
LonelyDanboI also had a question about the boot loader. that's the thing that lets you pick which partition to boot? I'm not sure which OS set it up, but are there incompatibilties between them? like Debian and Ubuntu? It seems to have made a bit of a mess when I installed both.06:09

bcx_thanks to everyone recommending rsync - i've checked it out, looks good. not too hard to use, especially with the GUI (grsync) - one question though, what's the difference between backing up and synchronizing?08:20
bcx_probably a dumb question :)08:20
somsipbcx_: back - copy everything from A to B. Sync - copy from  A to B and from B to A depending on what's missing, filestamps, etc08:21
fidel_bcx_: most likely unidirectional vs biderectional. refering to texts in grsync?08:21
somsips/back/backup08:21
bcx_i mean what makes them different. if i back up 1 server to another, what makes that different from syncing 1 server to another08:22

DirkosI can login in my terminal, but when i login to my GUI i hear the system login sound but then return to my login page11:08
Dirkoseven though the pass is valid. Anyone that has an idea?11:08
EriC^^Dirkos: does the guest account work?11:08
rustxwhat is the correct syntax to configure port into apt/sources.list file ?11:08
DirkosEriC^^: what is the guest account?11:08
DirkosI can login while doing CTRL+ALT+F1 with the same account11:09
rustxi am trying this one but does not work deb [arch=amd64] ssh://apt.repo:8888/var/repositories trusty main11:09

EriC^^Dirkos: any errors, but if it happened after the kernel update, i'd just use the older kernel or try a different driver, or see what k1l suggested11:13

BomboOerHeks: is it safe to do-release-upgrade from 14.04.2 to 15.02?16:52
Bombo'does it work' ;)16:52
PiciBombo: you'd need to go through 14.10 first.16:52
BomboPici: how?16:52
PiciBombo: do-release-upgrade can bring you to the next version, or if you are on an LTS, to the next LTS if available.16:53
PiciYou cannot skip releases otherwise.16:53
BomboPici: using Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS right now16:54
MonkeyDustBombo  my advice is to stick to 14.0416:54
BomboMonkeyDust: the systemd/lxc bug could be fixed in 15.0216:55
PiciBombo: your current release will be supported until 2019. 15.04 is only supported until mid 2016.16:55
AmozBombo, you have two options. Either upgrade to 14.10 and then 15.04, or reinstall 15.04 directly.16:55
x23i can't use my usb, don't have partition table and i can't create it16:56
PiciBombo: you are free to upgrade, but you need to keep in mind that your release will only have 9 months of support (from april 2015)16:56
BomboPici: can't i upgrade to the next version when support ends for 15.04?16:56

Gerowentreybul: Just take the naked girl off your wallpaper and you won't have to worry about hiding the rest of your monitor from the hangout, :P21:00

j3r0start that's the best advice ever(for trust no-one). So is that simple ? I just create users and give them ssh privileges ?21:45
Gerowenj3r0: You create users, and add them to the SSH config (/etc/ssh/sshd_config I think it is).  You can either add users explicitly there, or you can create a group, add them to the group, then specify the group in the SSH config.21:46
Gerowenj3r0: More info here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SSH/OpenSSH/Configuring21:47
=== zen is now known as Guest36722
=== EriC^ is now known as EriC^^
j3r0thank you21:48
Gerowenj3r0: Just know that this does not necessarily affect their ability to access other services such as regular FTP, HTTP web services, etc., you have to lock each of those down with their own configuration stuff.21:48
Gerowenj3r0: Np, :-)21:48
j3r0I see21:48
j3r0if I want to do this for many users it's better to write a script ? is that even possible ?21:49
Gerowenj3r0: If you have several users you want to have the same access privileges, it's easier to create a group, add those users to that group, then specify the group in the SSH config file, and then you can add/remove people from the group as necessary without messing with the SSH config every single time.  It will also keep the end of the SSH config from being a mile long list of usernames.21:50
Gerowenj3r0: You can also use that group in other places too if you want, such as granting all of those same users access to other services like HTTP, print services, etc.21:51
Gerowenj3r0: At least in my opinion.  You can certainly add each individual user to the ssh config and that'll work just fine.21:51
j3r0it will be guys all over the internet that I don't know. Plus that I am total noob with servers & linux21:53
j3r0also in this server I want to have my personal site21:53
bekksj3r0: Then you should not do it.21:54
Gerowenj3r0: Like let's say you're a teacher, and you're setting up a fake server, and you want all the kids in your class to be able to access SSH and FTP.  You can create a group say called, "Linux Class", and add that group to the FTP and SSH permissions separately.  Then let's say a person drops out of your class.  All you have to do is remove that person's user account from the group and they automatically lose access to all services the group was added t21:54
Geroweno, so you don't have to manually edit the config files for every single service you have running to remove that user, hoping you don't forget one.21:54
muculusI have 3 virtual network interfaces, eth0:1 eth0:2 eth0:3, how can I force debian to use them round-robin for default route?21:54
bekksmuculus: Those are IP aliases, not interfaces. They use the same gateway, and they are using the same single eth0 adapter.21:55
bekksmuculus: And that applies to debian too. This is Ubuntu support ;)21:55
danportinI'm trying to connect to my computer from an external network using SSH, but I'm having trouble defining the correct iptables rules. I have a port (say xxxx) forwarded from my router. Do I just need to accept input/output on that port over tcp?21:57
adrian_1908I was able to stop apache2 from autostarting with `systemctl disable apache2.service`. Starting it manually appears to work fine as before.21:57
muculusbekks: all of this virtual interfaces have public IP address.21:57
bekksmuculus: hats what IP aliases are for.21:58
bekks*what21:58
Gerowendanportin: The firewall of the destination computer (the one you're trying to log into) must have the appropriate SSH port opened.  If it has a GUI, GUFW is an easy to use firewall modification tool.21:58
Gerowendanportin: The router can forward traffic all day long, but the computer also has to have the port the traffic is being sent to opened.21:59

muculusmeatie: Are you sure? I can't find any documentation about it, even one! :)22:13
tonyyarussomuculus: It doesn't help if you need an individual user's traffic to get split though, and there are various other caveats.  It's a poor man's solution, but sometimes handy.22:13

Thorax2015_Always used Quassel on windows22:55
meatiei see mate in my apt-cache and i'm using 15.0422:55
sakangThorax2015_: yes you can see it but it's a KDE app22:55
wileeeworks and supported here, may not shake hands22:55
Thorax2015_So will that cause problems using Quassel22:56
sakangnot really, but installing quassel will bring in a lot of KDE stuff22:57
sakangor Kubuntu22:57
Thorax2015_ah22:57
wileeeThorax2015_, just a general statement, you wee given instances for install IE 14,04 build your own that would not be supported here possibly22:57

meatiehe's new to Linux guys...22:58
wileeeThorax2015_, as far as support here?22:58
meatieThorax2015_, why do you want to use Mate so bad?22:58
theskillwithinthis is Vagrant using Puphpet22:58
theskillwithinwhy is it doing that wierd22:58
eatingthenighttheskillwithin: did you run an apt-get update?22:59
lunarctx56Is there any reason software center is so sluggish?22:59
wileeetheskillwithin, keep it in support and try to avoid the enter as punctuation. free volunteer help.22:59
meatieit can't read his package list22:59
Thorax2015_Because I've used Ubuntu in the past and I'm not a massive fan of unity. I like Mint a lot but im not a fan of the security concerns.22:59
meatieclean your package cache and rerun update.22:59

meatiewithout boring you... it's better and not bloating to shit.23:00
lunarctx56I second Xubuntu, but i'm not a fan of the whisker menu23:00
wileeemeatie, Can we keep it to support without the biased fud, and clean language?23:00
eatingthenightxfce so nice. it's the only way i could get my laptop to last 6 hours23:00
meatieoh sorry wileee.23:00
sakangThorax2015_: well, quassel is the iRC client for KDE, so there should be one equivalent for mate23:00

meatiei am a heathen, it comes out at times.23:01
Thorax2015_So, how do i go about installing xfce?23:01
wileeeheh23:01
meatiexfce is less resource hungry so if you appreciate that, you'll enjoy it.23:01
sakanginstall xubuntu23:02
Thorax2015_Does xfce have a similar layout to linux mint cinnamon?23:02
meatieyou can change everything to suit your needs, no matter what you choose.23:02
theskillwithineatingthenight thank you i ssh into my vagrant machien now i am doing reprovision to see if error is gone23:02
Thorax2015_sakang, ive already said i want unity aswell as something else23:03
Thorax2015_Hence why i used the vanilla 15.04 install23:03
QbuoHey I have a supposedly easy question if anyone would be willing to help me for a bit?23:03
lunarctx56Yes, it's similar to mint.23:03
sakangThorax2015_: I thought you want to install xfce?  Xubuntu is the ubuntu xfce flavor23:04
lunarctx56SIMILAR not the same23:04
wileeeQbuo, Spill it fpr help. ;)23:04

QbuoI want to completely erase my ubuntu partition23:04
Thorax2015_Yes sakang, I'm just trying to install another DE along side Unity23:04
meatieis that your question?23:04
QbuoYep23:04
wileeeQbuo, All in one post, likw with what and why and end goal.23:04
theskillwithindang vagrant sucks with ubutnto23:04
QbuoIt's the only thing on my HD if that's a variable23:04
theskillwithinwill the break anything?  http://pastie.org/1032291123:05
meatievagrant is amazing with ubuntu.23:05
meatievagrant+docker .. great dev. entails23:05
theskillwithinwell then i suck with vagrant23:05
QbuoI want to Uninstall Ubuntu 14.04 and all my data so I can install a new operating system23:05
theskillwithinI am using vagrant + puphpet23:05
theskillwithinwhat is docker?23:05
meatiedocker.io23:05
wileeeQbuo, any install will wipe what you want, this is ubuntu support.23:05
QbuoSo installing anything will wipe what remains?23:06
theskillwithinu have to pay for it?23:06
tgm4883containers FTW!23:06
wileeeQbuo, If you do it yes, youhave not mentioned the other OS, really this is not a supported issue if not a ubuntu install.23:06
QbuoAlright, thanks23:06
theskillwithinI am using puphpet/ubuntu1204-x6423:07
Thorax2015_So how can i install xfce on Ubuntu 15.04?23:07
QbuoI have bootlegged windows that I want to upgrade to w10 so I can play my games :P23:07
faqiha23:07
tgm4883Qbuo: that's not this works, that's not how any of this works23:07
Thorax2015_Plus win10 is free23:08
meatieThorax2015_, if you are new to linux become familiar with the package management first.23:08
sakangThorax2015_: like I said install xubuntu.23:08
meatiethen you'll be able to just search for 'xfce'... apt-cache search xfce23:08
dogeywoofcan anyone help me access the appdata section in ubuntu?23:08
Thorax2015_I dont want to install xubuntu XD I keep saying that23:08
dogeywoofi know how in the terminal, but id like to do it graphically so i can see23:08
Qbuotgm4883 what do you mean23:09
Thorax2015_I just want to add a different DE to my current install, not format and install XUBUNTU23:09
meatieThorax2015_, sudo apt-get install xfce423:09
tgm4883Qbuo: I mean, this isn't windows support, as we don't support it here23:09
sakangThorax2015_: installing xubuntu adds xfce desktop alongised your existing DE23:09
dogeywoofwhen you type /.folder in the terminal it brings you to the hidden appdata, but i cant figure out how to access those folders through the gui explorer23:09
Thorax2015_Thankyou meatie. I am already pretty familiar with how the package management works. I just wasnt sure exactly how to install xfce23:09
tgm4883sakang: installling xubuntu-desktop would23:10
meatieyou're welcome.23:10
QbuoI just want to know if installing a new operating system will completely wipe the ubuntu partition23:10
meatieQbuo, yes.23:10
tgm4883Qbuo: you've already been told it would23:10
QbuoWell thanks for your help then, see you later23:10
Thorax2015_Qbuo, not if you partition your drive first23:11
QbuoThorax2015_ what?23:11
theskillwithinblah23:12
Thorax2015_Depends on your HDD's. If you have one drive with ubuntu on it, you will need to shrink the partition and install windows along side it.23:12
Thorax2015_Though you will end up having only the windows MBR. Its best to install windows first then ubuntu23:13
tgm4883Thorax2015_: he wants to wipe everything....23:13
Thorax2015_ohhh. Then yeah, go ahead haha23:13
sakangtgm4883: don't get confused between fresh install vs installing from package manager23:13
theskillwithinhow do i know if redis is running?23:13
tgm4883sakang: I'm not confused23:14
tgm4883!info xubuntu23:14
ubottuPackage xubuntu does not exist in vivid23:14
tgm4883sakang: the only way to install "xubuntu" would be a fresh install. If you are using the package manager it would be xubuntu-desktop or xfce423:14
Thorax2015Wow.... xfce is not very nice at all23:15
artoissure it is23:15
tgm4883Thorax2015: ?23:15
Thorax2015Task bar at the top, another mini taskbar at the bottom, whats that all about?23:16
meatieit's minimalistic23:16
tgm4883Thorax2015: well to be fair, you installed a flat xfce without any of the xubuntu customizations23:16
Myrttisomething that you can change from default23:16
tgm4883Thorax2015: out of the box it looks like this http://xubuntu.org/screenshots/23:17
Thorax2015Not as minimalistic looking as mate or cinnamon23:17
Thorax2015tgm4883: yeah thats exactly what it looks like except i have a small bar at the bottom23:17
wolfy1339my computer is stuck in the grub CLI and I would like to boot a live usb, how would i go on to do that?23:17
tgm4883Thorax2015: how is that not as minimalistic as mate?23:18
tgm4883actually, mate has a bar on teh bottom23:18
Thorax2015yeah, and nowhere else23:18
Thorax2015Ahh i see, it was just a panel that I can move23:19

Thorax2015ok xfce is pretty nice23:23
meatieThorax2015, indeed it is23:24
Thorax2015I think the default layout was just a bit naff23:24
Thorax2015I cant get the taskbar to work over both my monitors though23:24
danportintgm4883: just customize the interface; it will look as minimalistic as you prefer in no time at all.23:25
Thorax2015Yeah i am doing, its pretty damn flexible23:26
tgm4883danportin: I think you meant that for Thorax201523:26
danportintgm4883: I did, you're right. Sorry!23:26

treeprogramhi, I'm trying to fix a battery issue stemming from the DSDT table. I've disassembed the file, fixed the problem, and recompiled it. Now how do I replace the existing DSDT table in /sys/firmware/acpi/tables/ with the modified one? I keep getting "operation not permitted", even when root23:27
Thorax2015How stable is cinnamon on Ubuntu 15.0423:27
Taz3rBon allez ++ à dans une semaine23:27
danportinOn Gerowen's suggestion, I installed Gufw to simplify editing iptables and connect to my machine from an external network. I still can't connect because (apparently) ufw keeps blocking my connection attempts (telnet and ssh). Am I doing something wrong? I'm really not sure what's wrong, here: <http://lpaste.net/137693>23:27
Taz3rBon allez ++ à dans une semaine23:28
tgm4883danportin: you have SSHD running on port 2015 but allowed in port 22?23:29
treeprogram*getting "permission denied", not "operation not permitted"23:29
david__hello23:29
pavlos_leave23:30
treeprogramnevermind, I think I found instructions on how to do it: http://askubuntu.com/questions/50656/no-battery-present-on-a-toshiba-satellite-l65523:30
theskillwithinhow do I know if reddis is running?23:30
meatieredis? pgrep redis ...23:31
danportintgm4883: I think ufw is permitting ingoing and outgoing tcp connections on port 2015 (I forgot to edit that last 2015 - too late); where do you see it allowed on port 22?23:31
gr1zzlybe4rWhat should I do if I cannot get my Gnome Display Manager to bootup? I stupidly ran 'sudo apt-get remove gtk+-3.0" and now I can only see "starting version 219" indefintely when trying to turn on my computer.23:31
=== victor is now known as Guest11692
meatiegr1zzlybe4r, recovery mode -> reinstall it.23:32
tgm4883danportin: that is what the GUFW says in your paste23:32
gr1zzlybe4rFor reference -- I have reinstalled gtk3 by running sudo apt-get install gtk+-3.023:32
gr1zzlybe4rmeatie -- you mean reinstall gdm?23:32
gr1zzlybe4rI'm also in recovery mode now.23:32
tgm4883danportin: granted, I've not used GUFW, so I'm just reading what it says and hoping i'm right23:32
meatiei would try reinstalling gdm23:33
meatietgm4883, nmap and see if the port is actually open23:33
meatieand i hope your router is forwarding the port23:33
gr1zzlybe4rargh -- ok I'll do that. Pretty dumb move to type "remove gtk+-3.0" lol.23:33

tgm4883come on guys, at least read a little bit of the backlog23:34
danportintgm4883: Oh, I see. That was the output of Gufw after selecting 'Deny' for 'Incoming'. That still doesn't answer the question why it's blocking ssh though, I think.23:34
deliadhow i can use it in the whole system as default sound device?23:34

euphoria42Hi, im interested in running a visualization of Windows 7 for use to run programs like Photoshop when I need them, i have the specs for it. Im just wondering what software to use. I know of VirtualBox, but are there better options for me?23:40
tgm4883euphoria42: personally, I just use virt-manager and libvirt23:41

Guest70666B0g4r7_: I had tried that, but it wanted me to activate a repo on my system.23:50
gr1zzlybe4rwhomever it was that recommended that I install gdm again -- it worked. I also had to reinstall the gnome desktop envrionment. New question: is the `ubuntu-gnome-desktop` package the DE that comes with the Ubuntu Gnome distro?
