floyd20183Morning. I have a settings related query. When I clock on the top bar of a non focused window the mouse grabs and drags the window . I am on XUbuntu 15.04 and have checked for a setting but could not find one to stop this behavior. Any suggestions would be appreciated.08:18
Executioner`Is there a way to install stuff with apt-get to two separate partitions?11:51
CosmicNoisesHey guys. I'm running dual monitors, one above the other, and the one on top is smaller than the one on the bottom.14:06
CosmicNoisesThis results in some dead space in the desktop... i.e. desktop icons end up moving to s a space on the desktop that is not visible on the screen.14:06
CosmicNoisesThe mouse doesn't move into that portion of the screen, but for some reason icons go there.14:06
CosmicNoisesAny way to contorl the placement of icons, effectively banning them from the deadspace?14:07
CosmicNoisesI'm running a GTX 960, with NVidia's latest driver installed.14:07
knobCosmicNoises, something must be off...14:37
knobI have two different sized monitors, and my system recognized that... it adjusts everything properly14:37
knobTry without the Nvidia driver... I would do that14:37
CosmicNoisesknob, and use what instead?14:38
knobCosmicNoises, there is a "native" I think it's called?14:45
CosmicNoisesI don't think it's a problem with the driver. I mean, the screen is the correct resolution and I can't physically move my mouse to that part of the screen - it stops at the edge.14:46
CosmicNoisesAnd the backdrop fits correctly.14:46
CosmicNoisesIt's just the the icons are somehow able to get into the deadspace.14:46
knobYeah... I'm just throwing that out there... worth a test.14:47
knobI am looking for the location of that driver change14:47
CosmicNoisesAnd the native graphics driver just doesn't play nice with my card at all.14:48
CosmicNoisesWon't recognise dual screens or anything.14:48
knobah wow... dang14:48
knobhmm...14:48
knobNot sure14:48
Executioner`I've got 7.5GB of ssd space, and lots of hdd space to install Xubuntu to. How should I set up partitions and mount points?16:12
holsteinExecutioner`: it really depends.. i might just use the installer to automatically use the remainging empty space..16:15
holsteini would want to be cautious/aware of what else is on the disk, and think about the bootloader.. etc..16:15
Executioner`Wouldn't use autoinstaller, this will be a secondary OS, Win10 is the primary16:18
holsteinExecutioner`: im not saying to use "autoinstaller". im saying, to let the installer automatically partition16:19
holsteinExecutioner`: this would be a more typical linux install setup, with one partition for the system, which may be preferred with that limited space, and, an appropriate swap space.. to make suggestions to do something other than that, i would need more specifics about your needs16:20
holsteinthe windows10 bootloader wont offer to boot linux, so, you'll want linux to install grub, and you should be aware of what that means, and any UEFI setup or conig issues.. i would want to have my data backed up before install..16:21
holstein!dualboot16:21
ubottuDual boot instructions: x86/AMD64: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DualBoot/Windows - Macs: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookPro https://help.ubuntu.com/community/YabootConfigurationForMacintoshPowerPCsDualBoot16:21
Executioner`holstein: I already install GRUB on my systems, I just want to reinstall the system on a laptop which's got a fresh SSD16:37
holsteinExecutioner`: cool.. any installation guide you find for ubuntu will be relevant16:38
holstein!install16:38
ubottuUbuntu can be installed in lots of ways. Please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation for documentation. Problems during install? See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CommonProblemsInstall - Don't want to use a CD? See http://tinyurl.com/3exghs - See also !automate16:38
holsteinalso, the dualboot, since, you are wanting to dualboot with win10.. the defaults in the stock xubuntu installer should meet your needs16:38
Executioner`thanks, I'm just used to install xubuntu to a single 10gb ext4 partition, not to a system with an ssd and hdd before16:53
holsteinthe ssd will be a hard drive, for all intents and purposes16:54
holsteinwhat do i do? in the system im currently using right now, where i literally did the same.. replaced the hard drive with ssd.. i used the stock installer, with the default options, to install to the ssd16:55
holsteinwhy? those setting meet my needs, just fine..16:55
Executioner`it's quite small ssd, that's why I wanted to break up mount points; 60gb ssd -> 7gb for xubuntu, rest to win, hdd is for data and anything else16:56
holsteinyup.. you can do that. no problem16:56
holstein!fstab16:56
ubottuThe /etc/fstab file indicates how drive partitions are to be used or otherwise integrated into the file system. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Fstab and http://www.tuxfiles.org/linuxhelp/fstab.html and !Partitions16:56
holsteinyou can have a mountpoint in fstab, that mounts to /home, inside the installed system on the ssd.. with /home on the spinner.. or *anything* you want to implement16:57
Executioner`!partitions16:57
ubottuFor help with partitioning a new install see: https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/installation-guide/i386/partitioning.html - For partitioning programs see !GParted, !QtParted (!Kubuntu 8.10 and lower) or !PartitionManager (!Kubuntu 9.04 and up) - Other partitioning topics include !fstab !home and !swap16:57
Executioner`^ that link is 40416:58
Executioner`is there a manual/guide on what linux partition/mount point contains what? like /home apart from desktop and downloads, /opt, etc.16:58
holsteinExecutioner`: quite a few.. really anything you find, related to main ubuntu works..16:59
holsteinExecutioner`: the !install i linked above has options http://jackaudio.org/applications/16:59
holsteinhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation ** sorry..16:59
holsteinalso, something like https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PartitioningSchemes may be helpful17:00
Executioner`thanks17:01
m0r0nHello. I've been searching through logs for why my computer is shutting down, but I can't find the source. Can someone help me find the log? My computer shuts down after 3-4mintues of having DOTA2 launched, earlier today it was working fine.17:12
holsteinm0r0n: i cant help with the log, but, maybe someone in the main #ubuntu channel can better assist with that.. otherwise, i would look into the hardware17:13
m0r0nOkay17:13
holsteinsounds like, you are overheating the GPU.. and i would try isolate that, and test for it.. maybe even try other GPU drivers, and configs in the game17:13
m0r0nWell it ran yesterday with the same settings, today with the same settings. The crash happened after I tried switching monitors. When it crashed I went back to the same monitor and the crashes continued17:14
holsteini think you are assuming "crash" though.. but, that does seem relevant17:15
holsteinwhat settings did you set to change the monitor? is the monitor still connected? id say, your data seems to point to GPU as well. either driver, or config17:15
holsteinmost log files are in /var/log AFAIK.. you could check the x ones..17:16
m0r0nholstein, you'll never guess what the problem was17:22
m0r0nMy laptop is on a dock. I wanted to use another monitor instead of my laptop screen. While moving the dock/laptop I pulled the laptop slightly out of the dock17:23
m0r0nThe keyboard and mouse were active but the power source wasn't connected (even though they're on the same connector port)17:23
m0r0nI think it wasn't getting enough juice from the power port as expected so it shut down17:24
holsteinm0r0n: seemed like a hardware problem.. glad you got it sorted..18:17
