xubuntu-bisiI have a neighbour with a fresh install of xubuntu 14.04 to replace ubuntu 10.04.  She would like the clock in the upper right of the panel to have bigger digits (twice as big would be nice).  Increasing the height of the panel has no effect.  20 minuts with duckduck and google have given nothing better than the idea of DockBarX.  Is it possible to do this natively?04:26
cfhowlettxubuntu-bisi, easier fix: install another clock app.  lots of them in the software center04:30
PotpeelHello what Display manager does xubuntu use? (and how do you tell)06:03
enrico_Hi lads, I'm using an old Asus Eee PC netbook, and since I installed Xubuntu power consumption has been really bad, at least for what concerns battery life. Since I intend to use this as a 24h p2p station, this is a major issue for me. CPU is below 10% in idle with qbitorrent running. What should I do?07:14
enrico_Just to give a measure, with win7 I had about 4-5 hours of battery life, just 1 with xubuntu, something must be going on07:16

BobOvaHi, after conect eternet cable to my NB,  everything run as it should. But after restart, my netvork widget (on the panel) dont show wired networks. Removing and re-adding the widget is not working. If the cable is connected or disconnected also not affected. Wired connections are not visible in the widget. Wi-Fi is functioning normally.10:50
LuyinBobOva sudo service NetworkManager restart11:03
BobOvaLuyin Thx, but "NetworkManager: unrecognized service"11:05
LuyinBobOva perhaps it's network-manager, not sure11:06
BobOvaLuyin At least I know from what they bounce ...11:08

redixinHi all. I have a problem with held packages. Here what I got when trying to install python-dev http://paste.ubuntu.com/12055705/14:14
redixinthe same was with openssh-server, but it was solved by "apt-get remove openssh-client && apt-get install openssh-server"14:15
mrkrampsredixin, try to install the mentioned packages manuall:$ sudo apt-get install python2.7-dev libpython-dev python-dev14:19
redixinmrkramps, the same. "Depends: python2.7 (= 2.7.6-8) but 2.7.6-8ubuntu0.2 is to be installed" and so on14:20
mrkrampsredixin, default python should be version 3, i guess14:22
redixinmrkramps, i need pyton2.714:22
mrkrampsdo you explicitely need 2.7?14:22
mrkrampsok14:22
mrkrampsredixin, have you already tried to clean your package information? :$ sudo apt-get clea14:24
redixinmrkramps, afaik apt-get clean just clean the cache (/var/cache/apt/archives)14:24
redixinmrkramps, anyways it doesn't help14:25
mrkrampsapt-get install -f pyhton-dev?14:25
redixinE: Unable to locate package pyhton-dev14:25
redixinhm14:25
mrkrampstypo14:26
redixinapt-get install -f14:26
redixin0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.14:26
redixinoh, apt-get install -f python-dev: E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.14:26
redixinthe same14:26
holsteinsometimes, i can simply use the "fix brokan packages" menu item, in the synaptic package manager.. it can be tricky, especially if one has added 3rd party sources/ppa's14:27
mrkrampsholstein, actually -f is "fix broken" iirc14:34
holsteinyup.. and, if that doesnt work out well for me, which,  it can basically "loop" around, i'll try the synaptic menu item14:35
holsteinits not "better", and synaptic isnt doing anything one cant do in the terminal. it just can provide a simpler,  quicker way, to weed trhough it, for me.. in some cases14:35
mrkrampsi agree14:36
mrkrampsbut i've seen these dpendencies errors from time to time and i've still no idea what they really are nor how to reliably fix them14:37
holsteinsometimes, when running those larger PPA's, i have found, i just cant seem to weed through them.. i'll have to purge, and start over14:37
krytarikredixin: 1.) Remove "python-dev" again; 2.) Update/upgrade/fix; 3.) Try again.14:46
redixinkrytarik, python-dev is not installed14:48
krytarikredixin: "sudo dpkg -P python-dev"14:48
redixin# dpkg -P python-dev14:49
redixindpkg: warning: ignoring request to remove python-dev which isn't installed14:49
krytarikredixin: So, follow up with the rest.14:51
redixinkrytarik, Update/upgrade/fix -- what is fix?14:52
holsteintypyically, running "sudo apt-get update" will kick out errors one can address14:52
redixinI have already done update/upgrade. 0 packages upgraded, and still the same14:53
krytarik"Same" what?14:53
redixinsame install python-dev http://paste.ubuntu.com/12055705/14:54
krytarikredixin: Are you getting any error messages from ""sudo apt-get update" and ""sudo apt-get upgrade" *before* trying to install that package again?14:56
krytarik-"14:56
redixinkrytarik, I did not see any other errors. just see error when trying to install python-dev14:57
redixinkrytarik, btw > the same was with openssh-server, but it was solved by "apt-get remove openssh-client && apt-get install openssh-server"14:57
krytarikYep, seen that.14:58
redixinseems there was the same with libssh14:58
krytarikredixin: Try "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" in the middle then.14:59
redixinkrytarik, I tried. 0 packages upgraded14:59

redixinknome, 500 before the url is http 500 code?15:04
knomeactually, nope.15:05
krytarikredixin: Hah, yep, I'd agree with knome.15:05
knomebut i would still check the archive.15:05
knomechange to some other mirror and see if it's fixed15:05
knomesometimes mirrors aren't up-to-date and it causes errors like this15:06
redixinknome, I've changed it to cz, and nothing changed15:07
knomeand did sudo apt-get update after that?15:07
redixinbtw, openssh-server was installed without changing mirrors15:07
redixinknome, sure15:07

xubuntu35wcan anyone point me to the md5 value on the xubuntu website - just downloaded the iso but cant find the value?22:58
xubuntu35wmay I ask a question?23:04
xubuntu35wanyone home?23:04
bekksSure.23:06
xubuntu35wcan I ask a simple question?23:06
bekks!ask | xubuntu35w23:06
ubottuxubuntu35w: Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-) See also !patience23:06
xubuntu35wI just downlloaded 14.04.3 via bittorent.  I cant find the md5 value to compare to on the web site - what am I missing?23:07
Unit193http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/14.04.3/release/MD5SUMS though the torrent itself will verify.23:08
xubuntu35wthe bittorrent client automatically verifies?23:09
bekksIt verifies whatever it downloaded - which may differ from the original on the official website.23:09
xubuntu35wso do I care then, if I used used a torrent file?  Sorry - just not sure I m getting this23:10
bekksYes, you do care.23:11
xubuntu35wthen were do I find the compare value on the web site?23:11
bekksYou've just been given a link by Unit193 :)23:11
xubuntu35wwhy could I not find that on the xubuntu org website where I downloaded it from, I have to wonder?23:12
xubuntu35wThat does check out though - thanks Unit193 - though still confused about the source23:14
Unit193Click any country name, and there's the MD5sums file.  Sure.23:14
Unit193Since you downloaded the torrent off of torrents.ubuntu.com, one should be able to presume the embedded checksum should be good.23:15
xubuntu35wactually, it was xubuntu.org23:16
xubuntu35wAnyway, thanks for the help bekks and Unit93  - looks like Im good23:17
