maldridgeI'm having an issue with pam_mount not unmounting things.  I can see it attempts to unmount, but the network volumes remain mounted.  Is there a good way to find out why its failing?00:06
maldridgespecifically, I believe this to be a bug within the package, but it seems dead so I figured I'd ask if anyone knew any tricks for pam_mount first00:07

SchrodingersScatsurgy: persistence is a liveusb thing, it gives space that the liveusb can store settings and changes. If you do an actual install to the flashdrive is when you'd worry about grub, and yeah unplugging the internal would be the sure way to make sure it wasn't botched, but really so long as you pay attention you should be fine, i believe there's a setting for where to grub04:43
hal9000surgy: just make sure it installs grub to your flash drive. best case, unplug all your hdd/sdd's04:44

monsunedoes anyone know what happens to the filesystem when you manually delete a 300GB sparse file of some vm? no extra free space appeared after that and i'm somehow worried10:30
ikoniawotan147: don't guess - check if it does10:31
bekksmonsune: A sparse file can have a physical size of 0 bytes.10:31
monsunebekks yes i know but in this case it wasn't... it was filled to 90% with data in vm10:32
wotan147ikonia, how to do ?10:32
bekksmonsune: So you deleted a file in your vm - and then you checked where and what which makes you think the spaced used wasnt freed up?10:33
monsunebekks i wiped those data clean before deleting .raw file but afaik spare files never shrink thus i should get my free space back after deleting it... and it never happened, df still reports same amount of free space10:33
monsunei mean i removed the sparse .raw (hard disk image) on host10:33
monsuneexpecting to have 300GB of extra free space after that while it never happened10:34
bekksmonsune: And the answer to my question?10:34
monsunebekks could you please rephrase the question?10:35
monsuneor i could just briefly start from scratch: i had a 300GB sparse file created on host, i loaded that 300GB hard disk with data in my vm, then i wiped that hard disk clean in vm, then i removed the sparse file manually on host and my 300GB never got back10:36
Newbie753{0}10:37
monsuneso i wonder what happened to the free space and do i face a filesystem corruption or is that normal because i never used a proxmox tool to remove the .raw10:37
bekksmonsune: You deleted a file in your guest: where did you run df to see wether space freed up?10:38
monsunebekks i didn't delete a file in guest because the file was a virtual hard disk for that guest10:38
Newbie235{0}10:38
Mailaender{0}10:38
bekksmonsune: So you deleted a file on your host?10:38

monsunebekks but the fact is that once i deleted another virtual hard disk via proxmox panel - the space was claimed back (some 80GB drive this time) so definetly proxmox does something else than simply wiping the .raw especially as it took a while, like 2 mins10:43

bekksmonsune: No. You face open file handles.11:00

monsunebekks is having open file handles bad besides the fact that no free space is reclaimed?11:01
Seveasmonsune: there's no corruption. linux will keep treating the file as if it wasn't deleted, until you close the last file handle. And using some nifty tricks you can even reattach it to the filesystem.11:01
monsuneSeveas many thanks for this explanation11:01
Seveasmonsune: no it's not bad, it's even common practice for safe temprary files :)11:01

monsuneSeveas, bekks so i actually discovered a way to hide files on filesystem level :)11:02
Seveasmonsune: close the handles. Find out which application still has it open with lsof and/or fuser. Then close that application.11:02
bekksmonsune: Thats been suggested quite a time ago.11:02
AEL-HOpenRAirc: Why not, is there some side-effect that would make that undesirable? I just want to hide some files in a folder so that it is more easily navigatable11:02
Seveasmonsune: indeed!11:02
monsunebekks i'm scared that it would f*ck up my other vms11:03
bekksmonsune: A safe way to loose data, more likely.11:03

SeveasHalelujah: the pidfile lives in /run/user/*/pulse/pid -- try deleting it and rebooting.11:03
Seveasmonsune: depends on the filesystem. And doing it wrong will cause corruption. So I really shouldn't have mentioned it :)11:04

Guest68898shut up11:07
monsuneindeed11:07
wotan147kkk123 shut you the fuck up ;)   (you got a problem?  )11:07
Seveaswotan147: don't feed the troll.11:07
bekksGuest68898: wotan147: watch your language please.11:07
monsuneok ignore on and back on my deleted 300GB file...11:07
Guest68898shut up is bad? O_O11:07
SeveasGuest68898: yes, we try to be nice to people :)11:07
Guest68898ah i meant shut up to the kkk guy11:08
monsunei just realised that the vm i used to attach that file to is still up, so perhaps that's the problem?11:08
Seveasmonsune: that'll be it.11:08
demonlove_be the nicest person u  know.11:08
Guest68898let the demon fall in luv wit u11:08
Seveasmy wife is 37 weeks pregnant. Don't get me started on loving demons :)11:09
Guest68898congrats!11:09
monsuneSeveas i wish it really solved the problem when i shut it down and my 300GB of free space is reclaimed11:09
monsunebekks what do you think?11:09
cchello everyone,i wonder if anyone knows how to overclock the CPU of raspberry pi 2 in ubuntu mate11:09
Seveasmonsune: sudo lsof | grep that_filename_of_yours_here11:09
Seveaswhat does that say?11:09
monsuneSeveas let me check really quickly11:09
bekksmonsune: I told you that quite a time ago. You obviously didnt even read answers. Thats what I think.11:09
arcimboldoCan I rename eth1 to vlan618, possibly without updating udev rules?11:09
ikoniaarcimboldo no11:10
kkk123HI IM BACK U DUMB FAGS Seveas i wanna cum in ur pregnant wife plz dennis let me11:10
monsuneSeveas well it returned quite a bit of lines11:10
Seveaswell, I guess that's a no. Thanks for answering the question ikonia :)11:10
not1but2hi guys, how to prevent data recovery in ubuntu?11:10
Seveasnot1but2: shred11:10
monsunebekks you told me to restart proxmox services and i most likely didn't get it so you meant to just restart a vm11:11
not1but2Seveas thx11:11
bekksmonsune: I told you that your vm was most likely running while you deleted that file.11:11
Seveasnot1but2: or dban if you want to do an entire disk. And of course nothing beast physical destruction :)11:11
monsunehm like 30 lines of this: lsof: no pwd entry for UID 99911:11
bekksmonsune: You didnt even noticed it, did you?11:11
arcimboldoikonia, so I need to setup udev rules, *and* I also need to reboot?11:11
monsunebekks i must have skipped that line from you somehow :/11:11
AEL-His there a command native to ubuntu server that would allow me to limit how much filespace a user could use?11:11
ikoniaarcimboldo: best way11:12
arcimboldoikonia, thnx11:12
monsunebekks i'm jumping back and forth from the console and i'm nervous about possible data loss so please forgive the ignorance11:12
monsunei had no idea what was going on11:12
demonlove_how to know what are the packages i  have installed in my ubuntu?11:12
SeveasAEL-H: quota. And use a filesystem that supports quota (and enable quota)11:12
Seveasdemonlove_: dpkg -l | grep ^ii11:13
arcimboldoikonia, I was trying to use ip link set ... name on /etc/network/interfaces but of course ifup fails because the interface name is changed while it's trying to set it up11:13
arcimboldoI wondered if there was a trick11:13
AEL-Hwould quota be the only way? Is there anything else?11:13
monsuneSeveas this appears like 10 times: kvm       169958  169989       root   17u      REG                9,4 322122547200   13631500  (deleted)/var/lib/vz/images/405/vm-405-disk-3.raw11:13
SeveasAEL-H: it would be the only way11:14
AEL-HOk thank you11:14
monsuneSeveas and also like 30-40 lines of: lsof: no pwd entry for UID 99911:14
Seveasmonsune: that confirms that you need to shut down the vm. Ignore the UID lines.11:14
monsuneso UID lines aren't to worry about?11:14
Seveasmonsune: not for this problem.11:14
monsunewell i hope it doesn't mean another problem to solve or stating a data loss11:15
monsuneit basically never happened to me before that i rm something and free space isn't showing up11:15
monsuneso i'm panicking11:15
demonlove_Sevas: now i  want to keep backup  of all  these pacakge11:15
t3chguyMy computer goes into a blank grey screen after selecting to start ubuntu from within a live usb. Any ideas?11:15
Seveasmonsune: just kill the vm and you'll see your space back. We've told you that quite a few times now :)11:15
Seveasdemonlove_: of that list or of the actual packages?11:16
demonlove_which  are installed after getting proper ubuntu setup11:16
monsuneSeveas crossing fingers and doing it right now11:16
not1but2Monsune - we're in same boat. ive accidentally delete my files11:17
not1but2And is trying to recover with photorec11:17
bekksmonsune: Why are you getting crazy about stopping your vm?11:17
demonlove_actually my faculty has configured my system in a creative way, now i  want to get back  all step11:17
monsuneSeveas, bekks: but when removing another 80GB hard disk from very same machine i never had to shut it down... i used proxmox for removal though and not direct rm on shell, what exactly did proxmox do then?11:17
bekksmonsune: you wanted to remove that file, so stop that vm now.11:17
bekksmonsune: And why do you repeat everything you already said?11:17
Seveasnot1but2: he's in a different boat: he wants to delete a file that's still open :)11:18
monsunebekks because i slept pretty bad because of the issue and i also want to fully understand what is going on11:18
monsunethanks to you and Seveas i'm starting to understand11:18
not1but2Saveas ic11:18
monsuneOMG my free space is BACK.11:19
demonlove_Seveas; actually my faculty has configured my system in a creative way, now i  want to get back  all step11:19
Seveasmonsune: good. Understanding is the best we can hope for. Much better than blindly typing commands :)11:19
bekksmonsune: I dont see a reason for repeating everything. It was explained to you, you said you understood. So the next logical step is stopping that single vm.11:19
bekksmonsune: Whats so hard about it now?11:19
monsunebekks and Seveas i'm seriously grateful for your help and patience11:19
monsuneSeveas as you could probably notice i did want to understand the problem, not just solve it11:19
Seveasbekks: well, if you've never seen this before it can be strange. I for one really appreciate that monsune is trying to understand what he's doing. That's rare :)11:19
demonlove_Seveas: actually my faculty has configured my system in a creative way, now i  want to get back  all step11:20
monsunei am because i learn this way so i don't walk in the dark again11:20
Seveasdemonlove_: yes, you've said that three times now. I'm afraid I don't understand what you mean with that though.11:20
bekksSeveas: Yeah, and he was told what happened, etc. and it was explained to him. No need to go through all that again.11:20
monsuneso after stopping the vm my 300GB is back... and lsof doesn't show the deleted file anymore, just alot of UID lines11:21
bekksmonsune: Thats expected.11:21
Seveasthe UID lines are (probably) because some files are owned by uid 999, which doesn't exist on your system. This is a bit odd, but not worrisome.11:21
monsunebekks like Seveas said... it was first time for me so i got really scared and was about to umount, fsck and what not...11:22
bekksmonsune: So you didnt understood even one line I told you.11:22
monsuneSeveas well i would rather not see them there then...11:22
monsunebekks that's a false statement, i learned alot from you and Seveas11:22
demonlove_Seveas: actually someone configured my ubuntu  in a very good manner (graphics, imp pacakge)  now i  have some problem  with that guys and want to get those methods11:23
monsunei wanted to get a picture first what was really going on11:23
demonlove_is it possible11:23
demonlove_my  laptop is with me11:23
bekksdemonlove_: Whats a "imp package"?11:23
HalelujahMy sound doesn't work :(11:23

demonlove_he make some command by himself11:24
Seveasmonsune: sudo lsof | awk '$4 == "999" {print}'11:24
bekksdemonlove_: Which "important packages"?11:24
TJ-demonlove_: Do you mean "gimp" ?11:24
AEL-HIs there any way for a root user to view active screen sessions other users have running?11:24
demonlove_those one too11:24
MonkeyDustHalelujah  in a terminal, type   alsamixer  ... if you see MM, go there and hit m to unmute11:24
demonlove_ya11:24
bekksAEL-H: Sure.11:24
Seveasmonsune: that should show the open files with the odd uid. pastebin the output and we'll see if there's a problem11:24
Halelujahgatis@pc:~$ alsamixer cannot open mixer: No such file or directory11:24
monsunebekks, Seveas so should i be happy now? no more worries about the filesystem? was it just about closing the file handles and everything is done automagically in ext4?11:24
bekksmonsune: Yes.11:24
AEL-HApologies I should have been more specific in my question, if such a method exists does anyone know what that might be?11:25
bekksmonsune: This entire discussion is pointless after you restarted your vm and reclaimed space.11:25
monsuneSeveas i will happily do that in a minute11:25
Seveasmonsune: not in ext4 but in the kernel (this is not a feature of any filesystem, but done at a higher layer)11:25
MonkeyDustHalelujah  alsamixer is installed by default in ubuntu ... what is the outcome of   cat /etc/issue11:25
monsunebekks ok i get it... problem solved :) thanks alot again, i do appreciate11:25
bekksAEL-H: as root user: su - username;11:25
monsunesame to you Seveas11:25
AEL-HCan the same user be logged in from two different places simultaneously?11:26

Halelujahgatis@pc:~$ cat /etc/issue Ubuntu 15.04 \n \l11:26
monsunewell i'm considering fstrim or discard but this would take upgrading the kernel and yet i'm not so sure if it's bug-free and well tested so far (e.g. heard of issues and data losses on md raids)11:26
bithulhello how can i open apps in ubuntu studio11:27
Halelujahwhat is wrong with it :/11:27
Seveasdemonlove_: configuring the machine is more than just the list of packages though.11:27
Seveasdemonlove_: so I'm not quite sure what you're trying to achieve, but maybe simply backing up your entire machine would help?11:27
monsuneif i had fstrim working this whole situation would never happened11:27
Halelujahhow to install alsamixer?11:27
monsunei just wanted to get rid of that balloon 300GB which never came back after filling the 300GB hard disk due to the nature of sparse files...11:28
Seveasmonsune: fstrim/discard won't help. They only work on fs blocks marked as not in use. And as long as the file is open, they won't be marked as not in use :)11:28
Halelujahim trying to installe alsamixer: E: Unable to locate package alsamixer11:28
monsuneSeveas yes i get it but please read my last line - that's the real background of all of this rm crap11:28
bekksmonsune: You did not understand.11:28
martokDoes anyone know of any Blu-ray software to create video on a Blu-ray disk?11:28
SeveasHalelujah: alsa-utils11:29
monsunebekks please read my last line too11:29
bekksmonsune: You issue is NOT about sparse files at all. It was entirely cause by NOT shutting down your vm prior deleting a file.11:29
HalelujahSeveas i have installed it11:29
Halelujahgatis@pc:~$ amixer amixer: Mixer attach default error: No such file or directory11:29
bekksmonsune: Please read MY last line...11:29
Seveasmonsune: hmm. sparse files. I hate those (and all other types of overprovisioning)11:29
demonlove_Seveas: how to backing up my entire machine.11:29
Halelujahgatis@pc:~$ alsamixer cannot open mixer: No such file or directory11:29

Seveasdemonlove_: 00^11:29
monsunebekks i wanted 300GB back... i saw a file (had no idea what sparse was) so i simply deleted it... nothing happened... if i had fstrim i would trim the sucker and never had to play with removing hard disk from vm thus never had to delete and face the whole issue11:30
Seveasmonsune: unfortunately that's not true at all11:30
Steve_WozniakHi. Why is Mark Shuttleworth and Canonical full of dumb retarded niggers?11:30
bekksmonsune: fstrim would not have change one single bit.11:30
bekksmonsune: the file handle was still open, the file was not deleted until the file handle was closed.11:30
monsunebekks to the best of my poor knowledge it would give my space back... and i can back that with some nice urls11:30
monsunebekks no no11:30
HalelujahSteve_Wozniak: help me to fix my sound problem11:30
monsunei mean not fixing the file handle... i would never even try to delete the file, that's the point11:31
AEL-HThe problem I am having is a user is currently attached to the screen that I also want to attach to, when I try attach to the same screen simultaneously I get : "Cannot open your terminal '/dev/pts/3' - please check."11:31
monsunei meant using fstrim to reclaim my free space from that balooned sparse...11:31
bekksmonsune: Pointless.11:31
monsunewhat is pointless, bekks?11:31
bekksmonsune: It is a sparse file, not some black magic.11:31
monsunebekks sparse gets filled... so it uses more and more space right?11:32
monsuneonce you clean up that space your free space never gets back because sparse doesn't shrink11:32
monsuneso in case of 300GB sparse it does hurt11:32
SeveasAEL-H: before su-ing you do: chmod a+rw $(readlink -f /dev/stdin)11:32
bekksmonsune: Like every file. Do you know the difference between a sparse file and a regular file?11:32
monsunei learned about that today11:32
monsuneand i'm trying to explain to you what i wanted to achieve11:32
bekksmonsune: So whats the difference - explain it.11:33
monsunebekks regular file allocates all blocks at once and sparse has "holes"11:33
bekksmonsune: Correct. So the fact a file being a sparse file is irrelevant for your issue.11:33
monsunebekks meaning that you can actually see 300GB but just 1GB is in use and that means the fs only uses 1GB11:33
Halelujahplease help me to get my sound working :(11:34
monsunebekks it is11:34
bekksmonsune: It is totally irrelevant. It doesnt matter for your problem wether ls -lha show 1M or 300G.11:34
monsunebekks because that sparse was a virtual hd right? and i filled it in 90% meaning that sparse took close to 300GB on fs BUT then i wiped that hard disk clean in vm...11:34
Seveasmonsune: sparse files (like all other ways of overcommitting resources) are also a disaster waiting to happen.11:34
bekksmonsune: fstrim is totally irrelevant for your issue, too.11:34
monsunebekks even though i did wipe it clean my 300GB never shrank to 0 in fs11:35
bekksWhy would it?11:35
Seveasmonsune: fstrim in the vm wouldn't have made the file on the host sparse again.11:35
Seveasthough that would be a neat trick if it worked11:35
monsuneSeveas yes they are... you need to be very careful and monitor free space constantly...11:35
monsuneSeveas i didn't mean to fstrim in the vm11:35
bekksmonsune: fstrim is irrelevant for sparse files.11:35
monsunei meant to fstrim on host11:35
bekksmonsune: It is irrelevant on the host, too.11:36
monsunebekks fstrim /mount would give me my 300GB back11:36
Seveasfstrim on the host is irrelevant. That does nothing with sparse files.11:36
bekksmonsune: In absolutely no case.11:36
monsuneassuming that there was nothing on that drive anymore11:36
monsunebekks i can paste a link if you like11:36
Halelujahanyone can help me fix sound problem?11:36
Seveasmonsune: please do. I'm curious.11:36
SeveasHalelujah: !repeat11:36
Seveasaw feck, that got removed11:36
monsuneSeveas i will in a second11:37
bekksmonsune: which will not make your false statement being true.11:37
SeveasHalelujah: don't repeat every 60 seconds. That's highly annoying.11:37
DalekSec!repeat11:37
ubottuDon't feel ignored and repeat your question quickly; if nobody knows your answer, nobody will answer you. While you wait, try searching https://help.ubuntu.com or http://ubuntuforums.org or http://askubuntu.com/11:37
wotan147can please somebody go to http://support.mendeley.com then click to sign in and give me hints why the fucking webpage is not loadiing on my computer11:37
Halelujahi feel ignored :)11:37
monsunebekks and Seveas please check on this one: http://dustymabe.com/2013/06/11/recover-space-from-vm-disk-images-by-using-discardfstrim/11:37
AEL-HSeveas: Sorry, I am having trouble breaking down exactly what that command does, would you mind explaining it a bit11:37
bekksmonsune: So  do you happen to know what fstrim is for?11:38
wotan147can please somebody go to http://support.mendeley.com, click sign-in and tell me why it fucking does not load for me ?11:38
bekksmonsune: It is NOT for reclaiming space in a fs in any way.11:38
mcphailmonsune: this is all very noisy, so hard to follow. Are you trying to shrink a sparse file you have been using for a filesystem on a virtual machine?11:38
monsunebekks how come it worked for this guy i pasted a link from?11:38
Seveasmonsune: that executes fstrim in the vm though11:39
Seveasand I'm really positively surprised that that actually unmaps blocks in the sparse file on the host. Neat!11:39
bekksmonsune: because both of you did not understand what sparse files are and you both do not know what fstrim is for.11:39
monsunemcphail i would love it but fstrim isn't working on my box so i went tru the hell of wiping a sparse, facing an already solved issue and now arguing with bekks a bit :)11:39
monsunebekks please prove this guy wrong then: http://dustymabe.com/2013/06/11/recover-space-from-vm-disk-images-by-using-discardfstrim/11:40
monsunebecause that's what i'm talking about11:40
mcphailmonsune: if you want to shrink the file, the only reliable way I have found is to copy it, passing the appropriate parameters to "cp"11:40
monsunea balooned sparse got back to normal after fstrim in his case and that's my whole point11:40
bekksmonsune: Why would I prove a random 3rd party blog wrong or right. I told you whats to be told about it, now it is up to you to understand.11:40
Seveasmonsune: yes, but fstrim in the guest, not on the host. Still, neat trick.11:40
monsunemcphail so you mean cp can do that for us?11:41
mcphailmonsune: cp --sparse=always original.img shrunk.img11:41
monsuneSeveas oh is it in the guest there?11:41
Seveasmonsune: [root@guest ~]# fstrim -v /11:41
monsunemcphail damn... would that really work? you tested it?11:42
mcphailmonsune: of course11:42
monsuneSeveas indeed... then bekks was right...11:42
mcphailmonsune: you need to have enough space on the host for the copy, of course11:42
Halelujahsound not working on Lubuntu - need help11:42
monsunebekks how about what mcphail just said about cp?11:42
Seveasmonsune: not quite. He also says the whole thing doesn't work when fstrim was run on the guest.11:42
monsunemcphail well it can be painful at times but if it works... but does it require fstrim in kernel too?11:43
mcphailmonsune: no, why would it?11:43
monsuneSeveas oh did he... so at least once bekks was wrong :)11:43
Seveasmonsune: just don't use sparse files dammit :-)11:44
monsunemcphail not sure, just wondering11:44
mcphailmonsune: I'm not sure what fstrim adds, tbh11:44
monsuneSeveas that's how proxmox work with raw disk images and not much i can do about that :)11:44
monsuneworks*11:44
monsunemcphail there is alot of fuss about reclaiming free space from balooned sparse files and fstrim seemed like a solution, i wonder why no one mentioned simple cp stuff in those tutorials11:45
monsunebekks i promise to read up more on fstrim but seems like you were mostly right...11:46
Halelujahwhy i dont have alsamixer?11:46
mcphailmonsune: people always find the most stupid solutions to the simplest of problems11:46
monsunemcphail i mean why this guy just didn't use cp? http://dustymabe.com/2013/06/11/recover-space-from-vm-disk-images-by-using-discardfstrim/11:46
monsuneis it just stupidity or is there another reason?11:46
monsunehm could be that it's all different for SSD and that's what trimfs is for...11:47
mcphailmonsune: if anything, that will reclaim very little space in the guest and probably not even shrink the file on the host. Feel ffree to run it before the cp command to see if it helps to claim more space, but the file won't shrink properly until you cp. Sparse files are not magic11:48
monsunemcphail that's funny... i faced possible data loss and other issues just because i wanted to trim the damn 300GB sparse... i went tru deleting it manually, having file handles left open, panicking about fs corruption... and all i needed was: cp --sparse=always original.img shrunk.img11:48
HalelujahHow to install alsamixer?11:49
monsunewell they are a bit :)11:49
monsunean average joe won't get it (just like me) that what df shows is actually not always true11:49
mcphailmonsune: black magic, perhaps :). The wikipedia page on sparse files is worth a read11:50
monsuneindeed11:50
bekksmonsune: fstrim has no effect on non-SSD.11:50
Halelujah:/11:50
monsunebekks that seems to be very right and i return the honor11:51
monsunei just understood that too11:51
AEL-Hwould the root be able to ssh as another user? I appear to be having the problem that screen will only let me share the terminal if I ssh in as the same user who started it11:51
monsuneso all those people reclaiming their free space were just fighting their SSDs rather than fs itself11:51
bekksAEL-H: Sure.11:51
AEL-HHow might I go about doing that?11:51
Ben64AEL-H: yes, check ssh --help11:51
monsuneAEL-H there is a way11:51
AEL-Hok thank you11:52
monsunehaven't actually done that for years but i used to and it had to do with ttys11:52
monsunesome one liner11:52
bekksmonsune: ssh otheruser@remotehost ...11:52
monsunebekks i meant in screen11:53
mcphailmonsune: remember cp --sparse=always will not reclaim as much space as you hope: it will only squash the zeroes the image, of which there may not be many if the filesystem was filled11:53
SeveasAEL-H: did you see my message about chmoding your pty so screen -x works after su?11:53
bekksmonsune: Same thing in screen.11:53
marjinal1stI'm using Ubuntu 14.04.3 AMD64. When I launch an application, let's say terminal, app's icon gets to top of the launcher, not the bottom. How can I prevent it?11:53
bekksmonsune: and for screen itself: screen and screen -x11:53
AEL-HI did, sorry it must have got lost in other messages but I just asked if you could explain what the command is doing a little bit, I am having some trouble breaking it down11:53
monsunemcphail so in case of totally empty hard disk (wiped in vm) the cp on host should shrink to virtually 0 right?11:54
monsunemcphail or whould i need to physically fill the disk with zeros first in vm?11:54
mcphailmonsune: not if it has been filled first, no11:54
monsunewould*11:54
monsunemcphail how about filled and wiped after?11:54
Ben64monsune: what are you trying to accomplish11:54
mcphailmonsune: writing zeroes would help, but why not just create a new image under that circumstance11:54
SeveasAEL-H: the reason screen doesn't work after su'ing to the user is that screen needs to open the pty device that's your stdin/stdout. So the solution is to allow that user (and to be lazy: everyone) to open it.11:55
SeveasAEL-H: and the pty device can be found by following the /dev/stdin symlink11:55
monsuneBen64 i'm trying to uderstand how to deal with sparse files... and find an easy way of shrinking down virtual hard drives once they are wiped in vm but still take alot of space on host11:55
AEL-HOk that makes more sense thanks, I will do some more research :)11:55
SeveasAEL-H: I use this trick fairly frequently :)11:56
monsunemcphail that's exactly what i did today... i just deleted the hard disk image... but never took vm down which caused a problem11:56
Ben64monsune: delete them.11:56
BluesKajHi all11:56
monsuneBen64 not always possible because sometimes there could be some data11:56
Seveashej BluesKaj11:56
mcphail!info zerofree11:57
ubottuzerofree (source: zerofree): zero free blocks from ext2, ext3 and ext4 file-systems. In component main, is extra. Version 1.0.3-1 (vivid), package size 7 kB, installed size 50 kB11:57
Ben64monsune: deleting them will delete them, it doesn't matter what was on it11:57
BluesKajhi Seveas11:57
monsunemcphail i rmed a 300GB .raw and never got any free space back... started to panick11:57
mcphailmonsune: see the message from ubottu above11:57
AEL-HSeveas: So why is it that when I ssh as the user whilst that same user is also ssh'd in (in effect 2 simultaneous ssh sessions) that it then works fine?11:57
mcphailmonsune: designed to be run ia a vm guest for this reason11:57
Ben64its pointless if you just want to delete it anyway, just delete it, don't waste writing crap to a file you're just trying to get rid of11:58
monsuneBen64 an example: a 300GB filled in vm to the max and then i delete 250GB in vm... on host it still takes 300GB while the real data is only 50GB - how do i effectively shrink that image?11:58
SeveasAEL-H: because then you can already open the pty device11:58
HalelujahNEED HELP!11:58
monsuneBen64 i can't delete in every single case, it was just a simple example before11:58
Ben64monsune: thats not what you were asking about just now11:58
mcphailmonsune: you run zerofree in the guest then cp --sparse=always in the host11:58
monsuneyes and i told you why, ben6411:58
hal9000anyone know how i change dolphin's default view? i don't care much for icon view. not many people are in #kubuntu11:59
monsunemcphail oh so zerofree to zero the empty space itself so cp can shrink it as non-zero just won't shrink no matter if those are data or not?11:59
mcphailmonsune: yes - deleting a file still leaves all those non-zeroes in there, so zerofree will get rid of them12:00
monsunemcphail how about the vm hard disk being ntfs? i should take a look if there is zerofree tool for windoze too12:00
mcphailmonsune: it won't work for ntfs, and I don't know what will12:00
monsunesounds pretty logical and i appreciate your explanation12:00
monsuneso no banana on ntfs :/ at least not that easy12:01
monsunehappily ntfs is just a small margin here so i will survive12:01
monsuneluckily*12:01
vagrant806Hello everybody12:01
vagrant806I'm trying to run glxinfo on a headless ubuntu/trusty64 but I get the next error: unable to open display12:02
vagrant806if i run DISPLAY=:0 glxinfo i'll get Error: unable to open display , any hint to get the opengl information of my headless server?12:02
monsunei learned alot today... many thanks bekks, Seveas and mcphail, i seriously appreciate12:02
mcphailmonsune: np. good luck12:03
MonkeyDustvagrant806  in the host, type xhost + ... in the vagrant machine, type   export DISPLAY=:112:03
HalelujahWHy everyone ignoring me?12:03
Ben64Halelujah: because you haven't asked a question12:03
HalelujahBen64 how to fix my sound?12:04
dave12344321hi12:04
Ben64Halelujah: i don't know12:04
Ben64Halelujah: you might want to read this -- https://workaround.org/getting-help-on-irc12:04

mistawrighthi guys i got a dell inspiron 7000 with a i7 12gb of ram a 1tb harddrive and a dedicated radeon r7 m something with 4gb of ram. it also has intel graphics. it runs great with ubuntu but i hear the hard drive spinning up and down and almost clicking it doesnt do this in windows12:04
ioriavagrant806, are you running it as 'root' ?12:04
mistawrighthow can i fix this?12:04
dave12344321Germany12:04
MonkeyDustdave12344321  type /j #ubuntu-de12:05
HalelujahBen64 i already detailed my problem hour ago12:05
monsuneone last question: can you force rm to actually close open file handles when removing a file?12:05
MonkeyDustHalelujah  people come and go, not everyone has read your question12:05
vagrant806MonkeyDust: i guess that xhost command you refer to is from "x11-server-utils" package, installing now... but my host=windows7  ioria: no, i run it as a vagrant user12:05
popeyHalelujah: you're using lubuntu?12:06
Halelujahyes12:06
monsunebecause proxmox itself never needed to shut down the vm to cleanly remove file and reclaim free space while doing rm manually causes a problem as described12:06
ikoniaHalelujah: did you not solve thi with your pulse audio discussion earlier12:06
vagrant806MonkeyDust: vagrant@vagrant-ubuntu-trusty-64:~$ xhost --help xhost:  unable to open display "" vagrant@vagrant-ubuntu-trusty-64:~$ xhost + xhost:  unable to open display ""12:06
Halelujahi solve it for a moment12:06
ikoniait was explained to you earlier that pulse audo and alsa tools where not installed on your system12:06
Halelujahafter a restart all went back12:06
ikoniaare you using a livecd ?12:06
ikoniaor are you using an install12:06
ikonia(or live media)12:06
Halelujahim using install12:06
ikoniaHalelujah: is pulse-audio and alsa-tools still installed ?12:07
Halelujahyes12:07
MonkeyDustvagrant806  you should do xhost + in a linux host ... not sure what to do in windows, better inform in ##windows12:07
ikoniathen you should be able to use them (as you did before) to show the configuration of your sound card12:07
ikoniacan you still use the tools you used before ?12:07
Halelujahi cant open alsamixer12:07
ikoniaHalelujah: please define can't open12:08
ikoniawhat happens ?12:08
Halelujahgatis@pc:~$ /usr/bin/alsamixer cannot open mixer: No such file or directory12:08
ikoniaHalelujah: the file is not there12:08
ikoniaso either you did not install the packages12:08
popeyikonia: i dont think that's accurate12:09
ikoniaor you have uninstalled them12:09
ikoniaor you have deleted the binary12:09
ikoniapopey: go on.....12:09
popeyikonia: thats the error alsamixer says when the device is missing, surely?12:09
popeynot that the binary is missing12:09
popey"cannot open mixer"12:09
ikoniapopey: good spot12:09
ikoniaso the audio card has dissappeared again12:09
ikoniarather than the binary12:09
Halelujahok12:09
ikoniagood spot popey12:09
Halelujahi have ADI audiomax12:09
monsuneoh wow i have just found another 60GB of wasted space... a deleted hd image being on hold by qemu-nbd12:10
monsuneand that i have no idea about at all12:10
renn0xtk9can please somebody go to http://support.mendeley.com then click to sign in and give me hints why the webpage is not loadiing on my computer12:14
ikoniarenn0xtk9: why don't you just say what happens12:15
ikoniaHalelujah: do you know what device name it was using earlier12:15
ikonia(when you had it working)12:15
ioriamaybe i'm wrong, but lubuntu doesn't use pulseaudio ....12:15
Halelujahi didnt check.. i simply installed pulseaudio pulseaudio-utils and it started working... AFter restart it didnt work12:15
ikoniaHalelujah: so based on popeys spot earleir it can't open the mixer -> device file that pulse wants to use12:16
Halelujahyes cant open alsamixer12:16
Halelujahbut i see sound icon12:17
ikoniaso checking if that exists, or using the agruments to pass it the right device would be the starting point12:17
HalelujahI dont know what to do from here12:17
AEL-HSo is pts the terminal windows? and screen just creates multiple instances of these?12:17
renn0xtk9ikonia, it simply take ages to load, and after ages it will say no response from website. But it is not server side problem. If connect from my workplace it does respond fast12:17
renn0xtk9I more an dmore suspect some issues with ssl/encryption/watherver (i am not litterate with this) because I have this problem + apt-get returning curl not supporting http when hitting a ppa host by the same server12:18
ikoniarenn0xtk9: DNS ?12:19
ikoniarenn0xtk9: ahh yes, I remember you saying about not being able to support https connections either12:19
renn0xtk9and finally when I just tried to connect to freenode with SSL it kept retrying evry 10 second and failing12:19
ikoniaearlier12:19
DalekSecIt flips to https, yeah.12:19
renn0xtk9yes that is right ;)12:19
ikoniaso if you can't handshake SSL with any app - have you deleted your CA Certs ?12:20
HalelujahIs there any other leightweight OS like Lubuntu but based on Ubuntu?12:20
ikoniaHalelujah: use aplay -l to look up available audio devices12:20
DalekSecAre your ca-certs messed up?  dpkg-reconfigure ca-certificates  ?12:20
renn0xtk9so what about DNS? what should I try ?   It might be indded linked to a router issue because another laoptop behind the same routeur can not connect to this.12:20
Halelujahgatis@pc:~$ aplay -l aplay: device_list:268: no soundcards found...12:20
renn0xtk9while at work with that laptop i managed to ..12:20
ikoniaHalelujah: so youd sound card is not being loaded at all,12:20
SeveasHalelujah: do you even have a soundcard? :)12:20
HalelujahSeveas of course12:20
HalelujahIm using HP Compaq 6715s and it uses ADI Soundmax12:21
HalelujahSound works well on windows and Ubuntu12:21
HalelujahBut i ahve problems with Lubuntu.. But i need lubuntu because it's faster12:21
renn0xtk9ikonia, not that I remeber, but some application might have done it?  this computer has been freshly installed, 2-3 month ago12:22
ikoniarenn0xtk9: check what DalekSec said12:22
ioriaHalelujah, can you see it in lspci ?12:22
ikoniarenn0xtk9: if it was just the browser, that would be one thing, but you can't use curl, the browser, or IRC12:22
Halelujahioria: yes: 00:14.2 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)12:23
ioriaHalelujah, as far i can remember pulseaudio doesn't come by default with lubuntu ... did you install it after ?12:25
Halelujahioria yes12:25
HalelujahAnd it worked after i installed pulseaudio, but AFTER restart it stopped working12:25
KrupptHalelujah:Do you have pavucontrol installed?12:27
ioriaHalelujah, well, you can try to purge it (you can reinstall it later) , reboot and try it (don't bother of the icon) , just open an mp312:27
HalelujahKruppt yes i  have12:27
Halelujahwhat was the command for purge?12:27
ioriasudo apt-get purge pulseaudio12:28
renn0xtk9so I ran dpkg-reconfigure ca-certificates and said yes to all certificates (it mosly come from mozilla) it apparently updated certificates in /etc/ssl/certificates  but no progress...12:28
Halelujahioria: ok12:28
ikoniarenn0xtk9: silly question can you actually telnet to a host on port 443 ?12:29
renn0xtk9if I type "telnet host 403" in conesole, it says "telnet: could not resolve host/403: No address associated with hostname"12:32
Halelujah_ioria: i hear some sound! :)12:33
ioriaa good start12:33
Halelujah_alsamixer works now12:33
ioriavery good start12:33
Halelujah_hatis@pc:~$ sudo aplay -l [sudo] password for gatis:  **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **** card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: AD1981 Analog [AD1981 Analog]   Subdevices: 0/1   Subdevice #0: subdevice #012:34
ioriaok12:34
Halelujah_so what did purge pulsaudio do?12:34
Halelujah_Thanks, i hope sound will work after next restart :)12:34
ioriaHalelujah, lubuntu doesn't use pulse... maybe a conflict12:35
AEL-HWhat is the safe way to remove a USB? umount, eject or is there anything else?12:35
Halelujah_ioria do you know why they dont use it?12:35
ioriaHalelujah, they are two audio server... not a specialist .... :-(12:36
=== carlo is now known as Guest78810
ioriaHalelujah, maybe a couple of reboot will  test it12:36
Halelujah_what did purge command do?12:36
ioriapurge :P12:37
Halelujah_let me translate :)12:38
ioriaclean12:38
Halelujah_ah ok\12:38
ioriathe config files12:38
Halelujah_Thanks for help!12:38
iorianp,12:38
renn0xtk9ikonia DalekSec what does it mean that it can't resolve host/403?  or is it the bad command?12:39
ikoniarenn0xtk9: what is the EXACT command you typed12:40
monsunebekks are you still around by any chance?12:40
renn0xtk9telnet host 40312:40
monsuneor Seveas12:40
ikoniarenn0xtk9: do you have a machine called "host" ?12:40
renn0xtk9no12:41
ikoniaand 403 is running nothing12:41
ikoniarenn0xtk9: what are you trying to do ?12:41
ikoniarenn0xtk9: ok - what's the name of the deb repo that was failing for you earlier12:41
Halelujah_And thanks everyone else for help, ikonia, badoodh, bekks.12:41
ikonialets help you test this12:41
monsunewow i'm getting really good at lsof stuff :)12:42
monsunejust nailed down the quemu-nbd ghost image and managed to disconnect it :)12:42
renn0xtk9My machine is called inspiron, If I try "telnet inspiron 403" it says Trying 127.0.1.1...  telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused12:43
ikoniarenn0xtk9: ok - what's the name of the deb repo that was failing for you earlier12:43
ikoniarenn0xtk9: you're doing the wrong tests, lets help you, get me the name/URL of the deb repo that was failing for you earlier12:43
monsunesometimes it gets really scary... not only hd image wasn't there anymore but even its vm was deleted... file was still open and mounted in qemu-nbd... that's a bit too much :)12:43
renn0xtk9the server in the list  is "deb http://download.mendeley.com/apt/ stable main"12:44
monsunehow do you mount something that doesn't really exist?12:44
ikoniarenn0xtk9: thats the one that was failing earlier ?12:44
renn0xtk9yes the onw that was saying "curl does not support http"12:44
renn0xtk9Now: ?  "telnet http://download.mendeley.com/apt 403"12:45
ikoniarenn0xtk9: try this please12:45
renn0xtk9telnet: could not resolve http://download.mendeley.com/apt/403: Name or service not known12:45
ikonia"telnet www.mendeley.com 443"12:45
ikoniarenn0xtk9: please stop typing random commands, you're wasting your time12:45
ikoniajust type what I gave you12:45
renn0xtk9Trying 54.72.236.21... Connected to mendeley.com.12:45
ikoniarenn0xtk9: ok - so you have a valid connection, which is good12:46
Seveasmonsune: you don't12:46
ikoniarenn0xtk9: now do "curl https://www.mendeley.com/sign-in/"12:46
monsuneSeveas just trying to understand a logic behind that12:47
monsuneSeveas as i said, i found a bogush mount, how is that even possible? gone should be gone12:47
Seveaswhat do you mean with bogus mount?12:47
monsunei mean it was a disk image mounted as device while the file wasn't there12:48
monsuneso how come device was working?12:48
Seveasit was mounted before the file was removed. So the file was really still there12:48
monsuneshouldn't it disconnect itself? pump some error in logs etc.12:48
renn0xtk9ikonia, so where the problem would be comming ?12:48
Seveasmonsune: no.12:48
ikoniarenn0xtk9: type what I told you12:48
monsuneSeveas file wasn't there, only a handle was12:48
monsuneSeveas it seems like file handles are just everything the system cares about12:49
Seveasmonsune: the file was there, because a handle to it was open. All that was missing was the entry in the containing directory.12:49
monsuneSeveas hm12:49
monsuneSeveas so just like before... rm is removing just an entry in a directory that allows a file to be seen by human?12:50
Seveasmonsune: 'rm' removes the association of 'the filesysem blocks a b c and d' to 'the file name foo'. The kernel can then reclaim those blocks, but won't do so while someone still has a handle open to that file.12:50
monsunewhile entry isn't really needed for file to work?12:50
Seveasyeah12:50
monsuneso kernel operates on that just fine12:50
Seveasyeah12:50
monsuneit's only human that has a problem because of no visual contact with file tru entry12:51
Seveasand what you call entry, the kernel calls inode. Google it for more information :)12:51
monsuneman this is scary stuff :)12:51
monsuneoh so entry = inode12:51
monsunebut that is just wrong to me12:51
monsuneit's so easy to spy on someone, etc.12:51
Seveasinode  = thing in the filesystem12:52
monsuneyou could even plant a filedump in someone's system12:52
monsuneright?12:52
Seveasdirectlry = inode that's a list of dirents. dirent = mapping of filenames to inodes12:52
monsunevery nice knowledge and i'm all ears12:52
monsunebut hm12:53
monsuneit's not like kernel can actually do something with such "removed" file12:53
monsuneno app can operate without filename12:53
ikoniawhy do you keep referencing the kernel ?12:54
monsuneikonia because to me it's only kernel that can actually see and somehow coop with such "orphan" file12:54
renn0xtk9ikonia http://pastebin.com/4RJnNysD12:54
ikonia??12:54
ikoniaI'd forget the kernel if I where you12:54
xboner-just inject it into a system process12:55
* monsune forgets the kernel12:55
xboner-and reboot the machine12:55
ikoniarenn0xtk9: thats great, that looks like SSL is working just fine12:55
Seveasdon't forget the kernel, it'll feel lonely :(12:55
monsuneSeveas i will miss the kernel big time12:55
monsunehope it has a great time without me :)12:56
monsuneSeveas would you mind just another stupid question regarding fs and files?12:56
renn0xtk9ikonia hmm okay so what can be the reason?12:57
ikoniarenn0xtk9: can you do "sudo apt-get update" and paste the output in a pastebin please12:57
xSolidStatehey guys, I want to achieve the following: Encrypt my personal files but leave the computer accessible to a potential thief, so he doesnt wipe the disk(if anyone remembers that old defcon talk). I encrypted my /home during install. Will this prompt for a password if someone logs in on an unencrypted user?12:58
monsunei recently took a sparse file (just another hd image) and compressed it and stored... hoping that i'm saving vm's whole disk that way - will it really work? or should i first "unsparse" it? just not sure what data i really got and what happens when i put that file on another filesystem and try vm with it?12:58
monsunexSolidState truecrypt?12:58
xSolidStatemonsune, well. why? not in active dev, and ubuntu has builtin encryption12:59
IdiotI'm trying to install Ubuntu, but it gives me a black screen with the "fast tsc calibration failed" message.12:59
monsunedepends if you really need to encrypt and hide stuff or just pretend your data is safe12:59
xSolidStatemonsune, which one would be pretend?12:59
xSolidStateand why?12:59
TJ-xSolidState: encrypted home uses ecryptfs with content and filename encryption. Full Disk Encryption uses LUKS/dm-crypt13:00
monsuneanything but truecrypt isn't really safe13:00
ikoniamonsune: what ???13:00
monsuneso isn't any windows with it's NSAKEY built in :)13:00
xSolidStatemonsune, no sauce? not biting.13:00
TJ-monsune: do you have authorities for that? The TrueCrypt audit did not find any weakness in the crypto13:00
ikoniamonsune: truecrypt has a warning on the top of the page that says "it is not secure"13:01
xSolidStateTJ-, he means the only safe one is TC13:01
TJ-xSolidState: hmm, missing grammar!13:01
monsuneyes that's what i meant, TC is the only "safe" to the best of my readings and if TC is unsafe then nothing really is13:01
monsuneTJ- yes because i'm not a native and my English is kind of rusty... sorry about that13:02
TJ-xSolidState: I use LUKS/dm-crypt for the block devices and ecryptfs for per-user13:02
ikoniathere are many encryption options available to linux ???13:02
ikoniahow can you say they are not secure13:02
TJ-monsune: No need to apologise - just that I interpreted your sentence one way, and xSolidState another :)13:02
monsuneikonia there are backdoors to those and i'm 90% sure13:02
xSolidStateTJ-, ok the trouble here would be that a potential thief could not put my machine on the internet if i used FDE13:02
ikoniamonsune how are you %90 sure ?13:02
monsuneikonia just do some readings, it's not possible to prove anything13:03
IdiotCan anyone help me with this? I'm trying to install Ubuntu, but it gives me a black screen with a "fast tsc calibration failed" message.13:03
xSolidStatemonsune, SOURCE or GTFO, if you can excuse my rudeness. If you dont give proof, youre just trolling13:03
mcphail!ot | ahem13:03
ubottuahem: #ubuntu is the Ubuntu support channel, for all Ubuntu-related support questions. Please use #ubuntu-offtopic for other topics (though our !guidelines apply there too). Thanks!13:03
TJ-xSolidState: correct. But what is your aim? To be able to track the PC if they don't replace the OS?13:03
monsunedoes microsoft tell you about theirs deals with nsa? or dell tells you that? :) no13:03
ikoniamonsune: I do read, hence why I'm asking you why you are advising these tools are insecure13:03
xSolidStateTJ-, potentially yes.13:03
ikoniamonsune: we are not using microsoft here13:03
monsuneit's same stuff with everything13:03
ikoniamonsune: you're making wild statement and wild numbers such as %90 certain13:03
xSolidStatemonsune, stop this. youre making a fool of yourself. show us proof why ubuntus onboard encryption is broken or be quiet13:03
monsunedon't you know that nsa actively develops kernel too? :)13:04
ikoniawhen in reality - you had no idea13:04
xSolidStatethx13:04
renn0xtk9ikonia :http://pastebin.com/LuzJpmYk13:04
monsuneok enough :) back to my own problems13:04
TJ-xSolidState: The standard ecryptfs for per-user home directories should be sufficient then13:04
xSolidStateSo again: if i use user encryption via encryptfs, can an intruder get the pc to boot without entering a password if i setup an unprotected user? after setup it asked me about the swap partitions password13:05
TJ-xSolidState: Yes13:05
monsunebtw i never said it was broken... only that some alghoritms of encryption are not safe anymore for a long time and that's all i meant13:05
xSolidStatealgorithm not safe == broken13:06
monsuneno, just crackable with enough computing power13:06
monsuneor keys :)13:06
ikoniarenn0xtk9: something on that domain is not working well for you13:06
xSolidStateTJ-, thx13:06
TJ-xSolidState: are you are that many laptops come with tracking functions built into their firmware?13:07
xSolidStateTJ-, uh yeah but I would rather not use some weird proprietary solution where i have no control over the mechanism13:08
xSolidStatemine has computrace but i really dont trust such nonsense snake oils13:08
TJ-xSolidState: You're now doing what monsune was accused of. Where's your evidence for such statements?13:09
renn0xtk9ikonia,13:09
renn0xtk9can it be that it is due to my routeur13:10
ikoniarenn0xtk9: I suppose it's possible, but I don't know how13:10
renn0xtk9it seems like tht problem come from when i want to connect from behind it13:10
ikoniayou clearly have a valid connection there13:10
renn0xtk9okay13:10
xSolidStateTJ-, well computrace is proprietary. I can't know what its doing, and when. so I would rather not blindly trust something that could potentially be counterproductive.13:10
TJ-xSolidState: If someone takes the PC then they only have to wipe the disk drive, or replace it, and you have no tracking ability any more. Firmware based tracking is harder to dislodge13:10
ikoniarenn0xtk9: ahhh intersting that http download URL redirects to https13:11
ikoniaI don't se any of the other archives running on https13:11
TJ-xSolidState: Computrace makes uses of the SMM procesoor13:11
ZzeekeTJ-: Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Lenovo junk up their firmware and get caught?13:11
xSolidStateTJ-, http://usa.kaspersky.com/about-us/press-center/in-the-news/pre-installed-computrace-software-could-be-used-hijack-computers-k13:12
TJ-Zzeeke: You mean for their software update function?13:12
xSolidStatethis, among others, fuels my concerns13:12
xSolidStateTJ-, yeah they replaced a builtin microsoft executable with their own at boot time, which is another potential security risk13:13
ZzeekeWell this is what I was talking about: http://www.cnet.com/news/superfish-torments-lenovo-owners-with-more-than-adware/13:13
renn0xtk9ikonia which one?13:13
ikoniarenn0xtk9: http://download.mendeley.com13:14
xSolidStateSuperfish wasnt firmware afaik Zzeeke13:14
ZzeekexSolidState: It probably wasn't, now that I'm reading into it.13:16
Ryans_255is it possible to encrypt folder and compress it with tar and and openssl enc -aes-256-cbc13:16
ZzeekeHowever, it's stil a fishy (excuse the pun) business practice. Stuff like this should not happen.13:18
ricardaccording to the pastebin already set the display to 1920x1080 not?13:18
TJ-xSolidState: The thing is, if you're that paranoid, only a PC running libreboot is going to satisfy. How do you know the embedded computrace isn't pinging servers even if not activated by the user? My point being, what is most important - recovering the PC, disabling it, or simply protecting your own data from compromise?13:19
ricardthe pastebin is http: //pastebin.com/kHZnK7jM13:19
IdiotI'm asking this for the third time now. I'm trying to try the Ubuntu demo, but it gives me a black screen with the "fast tsc calibration failed" message.13:20
TJ-Idiot: sounds like the video graphics isn't starting, or else the image on the boot device is corrupted. Did you check the ISO hash after download?13:21
IdiotI'm going to check right now.13:21
renn0xtk9ikonai it is all http in the pastbin of apt-get update13:21
xSolidStateTJ-, protecting my data ranks highest on that list, but i would also like a way to recover my computer if stolen. apart from the fact that computrace doesnt work on linux anyway13:21
ikoniarenn0xtk9: yes, but check it out in the browser13:21
ikoniarenn0xtk9: it redirects to https13:22
ikoniarenn0xtk9: hence the curl error13:22
ikoniarenn0xtk9: the PPA onces appear to do it too - but they seem to work13:22
ikoniahow odd13:22
TJ-xSolidState: computrace is pure firmware/SMM, after being enabled. There's no OS component required except for activation.13:22
ricard someone could confirm me if my screen HD 1920x1080 will pastebin is the pastebin is http: //pastebin.com/kHZnK7jM13:24
Ryans_255is it possible to encrypt folder and compress it with tar and and openssl enc -aes-256-cbc13:24
TJ-ricard:  Yes, apparent it is13:24
IdiotTJ-:  CRC32: 21E4560413:25
xSolidStateTJ-, not pure firmware according to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LoJack_for_Laptops . How would that even work, it needs networking, file scanning, keylogging etc abilities.13:26
TJ-xSolidState: these firmware tracking agents use the SMM processor, which operates at ring -1 or ring -213:26
ricardthank you tj13:27
TJ-!checksum | Idiot13:27
ubottuIdiot: To verify your Ubuntu ISO image (or other files for which an MD5 checksum is provided), see http://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM or http://www.linuxquestions.org/linux/answers/LQ_ISO/Checking_the_md5sum_in_Windows13:27
xSolidStateTJ-, well, if wikipedia is to believed, it really doesnt, because it installs and removes components inside windows. i dont see the point in utilizing windows executables if you have ring -1/-2 access. I am highly sceptical of this, especially because its quite enigmatic to see whats really happening there. Not a fan. Thanks for your opinion tho :)13:28
TJ-xSolidState: I reverse engineered it some time ago; I know what it does13:29
IdiotTJ-: I'm checking the MD5 checksum right now. It took me a while to realized that I'm doing the wrong thing.13:29
xSolidStateTJ-, how would I know that i can trust you :P13:29
TJ-Idiot: the other issue to bear in mind is this: although the downloaded file may be OK... it may be corrupted whilst writing to the device (USB/DVD). Those instructions, unfortunately, never show you how to check the hash on the device itself... if you want to do that too, let me know13:30
=== xboner- is now known as xboner
IdiotTJ-: Alright, I checked the checksum (sorry) and compared it to the ones on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes. None of them were the one I had.13:31
TJ-xSolidState: You don't... that's really my point... at whatever level our paranoia goes to, we can imagine an adversary that can attack that level, right down to the masks in the silicon chips. But my essential point was, in doing your own OS-level tracking, from my experience, you only have about a 25% chance that the device won't be immediately wiped. So, protect your data, but just plan on replacing the device rather than trying to trace it.13:32
TJ-Idiot: that sounds like the download was corrupted on your disk, so you may need to re-download the ISO, check the hash is correct, and then re-write it to the installer device13:33
IdiotTJ-: The download is definitely going to take a long time, but it'll be worth it, I guess.13:33
ameciao13:33
xSolidStateTJ-, thanks for your input. :)13:33
TJ-Idiot: well yes... no good tryng to install from a bad image13:34
IdiotTJ-: Anyway, thanks for the help.13:34
TJ-xSolidState: I agree with your motivations, and I do some extreme encryption stuff myself, so don't think I'm trying to disabuse you :) If you want to talk about it some more /join #ubuntu-offtopic13:34

telboonmy docky shows that it may not work as well without compositing manager. I figured that Unity kinda replaces that, and docky kinda works well. Is there any advantages with either one?13:55
TJ-pradeda: the reason I ask these questions is, there are a lot of known issues with various TV models, where they have inbuilt Ambient Light Sensors or Power Saving modes. Both of those can cause the symptoms you describe. I would suggest checking the manual/settings config of the TV first and adjusting those options, if found.13:55

XavierG-2TJ-: I bought the computer mid-2013 so I should have installed first Ubuntu 13.04 with encrypted home.At this time it was ecryptfs or still Luks ?16:02
TJ-XavierG-2: OK, how about "sudo cryptsetup isLuks /dev/sda7 && echo Yes"16:02
SeveasXavierG-2: could be ecryptfs, but ecryptfs doesn't do full disk encryption. It sits on top of an existing filesystem16:02
XavierG-2ioria: I encrypted partition at the Ubuntu installation (choose option during the process)16:02
XavierG-2TJ-: this command doesn't return anything16:04
TJ-XavierG-2: OK, that means it isn't LUKS either16:05
TJ-XavierG-2: which release of Ubuntu was it you used the installer for, that encrypted the /home partition? the installer, when doing user home directory encryption, uses per-file/filename encryption, not block device (partition)16:06
ioriaXavierG-2,  did you encrypt only home or you choose entire disk encryption ? do  you remember ?16:06
TJ-ioria: if it were FDE then it would be LUKS, and isLuks says not that16:07
ioriaok16:07
TJ-XavierG-2: the encryption was done by the standard Ubuntu installer, yes? You didn't do anything custom yourself ?16:07
TJ-The only way it could be LUKS is if some custom steps were taken that used a detached LUKS header, so sda7 would be the raw dm-crypt device with no header16:08
SeveasTJ-: that sounds unlikely though16:09
XavierG-2TJ-: I'm not sure unfortunately, I would say 13.04 as I bought the computer on August 2013 but perhaps after I reinstalled... Sure it was before 14.10 as I did upgrade from 14.0416:09
XavierG-2ioria: only /home as proposed, the / partition was not encrypted (and still readable from LiveCd before i reinstalled)16:10
TJ-XavierG-2: OK, not long ago then, so we know for sure how the encryption options the installer would offer are Full Disk Encryption using LUKS/dm-crypt, or user home directory using ecryptfs16:10
XavierG-2TJ-: yes, by syandard Ubuntu installer, I did not do anything else. All crashed at the restart after 15.04 upgrade16:10
TJ-XavierG-2: I'm getting a little concerned that maybe you misunderstood the options at install time. Let me explain a possible scenario - feel free to shoot me down on this16:11
TJ-XavierG-2: During installation time you chose manual partitioning and created a partition for /home/ ... later you chose user home directory encryption. For some reason your /home/ partition was ignored and /home/ was created in the root file-system... log-ins and files would work, but once the old root file-system was wiped the files would be gone. /dev/sda7 may not have ever contained any data16:13
TJ-XavierG-2: can you do "pastebinit <(sudo dd if=/dev/sda7 count=1 | hexdump -C)" ?16:14
TJ-XavierG-2: it's possible that partition only contains zeros16:14
XavierG-2TJ-: possible but I don't think, / was around 30 Gb, /home 25 and it seemed correct in file manager16:16

=== nullsign- is now known as nullsign
BatholithI'm trying to get my Xonar Pheobus to work with Ubuntu now. :(17:20
XavierG-2TJ-: yes, I was happy to see that my computer was well protected if stolen. Strange... Password yes, passphrase no (perhaps I saved it, but in this case on the computer). It would be possible to recover it if it was ecryptfs with unwrap.17:21
TJ-XavierG-2: password/passphrase ... 2 words for the same thing17:22
TJ-XavierG-2: What I find strange is that /dev/sda7 has 2 sectors empty at the start (1KB). That means it can't be plain dm-crypt, although it could be dm-crypt with an offset=2. /dev/sda8 could be plain dm-crypt since the random/encrypted data begins at the start. Either way, none of the Ubuntu tools would create this.17:24
XavierG-2TJ-: I mean login password for /home, I have it, not the generated passphrase. But for that I need access to /.ecryptfs/Private. Even if it's plain dm-crypt, I would not be able to provide cipher chain, key-size, key as I just remember having choosen home encryption at install.17:24
ioriaXavierG-2,  do you have an hidden folder in /home      .ecryptfs ?17:25
TJ-XavierG-2: That's the strange part.. sda7 sda8 are not ecryptfs, so that doesn't apply. If they are encrypted, then they have no recognisable header, so the only Linux option for that would be dm-crypt, or else they have never been encrypted but have been randomised (from /dev/urandom maybe)17:26
XavierG-2TJ-: OK, I think I tried all possible things. Fortunately I had backups of the most important datas, but not those 2 partitions with also neede ones. In my new reinstalled home, yes (I again choosed encryption)17:26
TJ-XavierG-2: if you know the original password, it's worth trying that with dm-crypt on those partitions in case it works17:28
XavierG-2TJ-: what would be the command for dm-crypt please ?17:29

TJ-XavierG-2: I don't think a bug report is worth your time; without evidence and reproduceable steps nothign can be done18:22
XavierG-2TJ-: because in April 2016 some people will upgrade from last LTS 14.04, and perhaps could face same situation. Or other ones who still did not switch from 14.10 to 15.0418:22
ioriaXavierG-2,  right, but they should know perfectly all (=ALL) the  steps you did from a to z18:23
XavierG-2ioria: yes, even me can not be totally sure of all of them - I don't remember with which version of Ubuntu I did this /home encryption18:25
TJ-It looks to me from the gparted screeshots as if the original issue was the partition table becoming corrupted in some way, which on reboot meant the OS couldn't find file-systems. That would affect any init system, upstart or systemd18:25
TJ-/dev/sda8 (swap) is listed as 97 GiB ... can't be correct18:26

XavierG-2TJ-: I just had access to guest session, with all programs installed, but not my user profile18:27
TJ-XavierG-2: I believe the guest session gets mounted on a RAM-based tempfs, so that would work even with a missing /home/ mount18:28

bozeI couldn't get the resolutions quite right on my old TV so I went out and bought a new one. I can get the resolution perfect, but the screen flashes black for about a second frequently. I think it is the refresh rate cause if I set it to 30 it stops flashing, but looks really sluggish19:44
bozeOnce a 60i refresh rate showed up and it seemed to work well, but it didn't save to xorg.conf for some reason and I can't get it to come up again.19:45
poliI am trying to run something under rvm remotely and non-interactively. Seems like the rvm "source" isn't getting loaded if I don't have a shell going. I tried commenting the "If not running interactively, don't do anything" part of .bashrc but got no real result. The rvm script I need loaded is in /etc/profile.d/rvm.sh. Any ideas?19:46

jrmTJ-: looks good21:25
daftykinsah spotted now21:25
TJ-jrm: OK, now let's find out if it is still mounted ( we don't want to mount it twice!): "mount | grep target"21:26
daftykinsXeno72: nick highlights are useful21:26
daftykinsXeno72: ok best go install and make a log21:26
Xeno72@daftykins: But I posted the links here, other method required?21:27
jrmTJ-: It does appear to be still mounted: /dev/sdb1 on /target ext4 (rw,errors=remount-ro)21:27
jrmDoes that mean it's mounted ro?21:27
TJ-jrm: Good, so we can make use of what is already there :)21:27
devali mean to know if its possible in latest versions, because earlier even fedora had it. now they dont even give the mobile broadband via usb option...    n thats the reason i looking forward to download ubuntu...21:27
devalaeden__D, ..21:27
TJ-jrm: no, it means if there are errors to remount it read-only as a precaution21:27
jrmAh21:28
TJ-jrm: "sudo chroot /target"21:28
TJ-jrm: at this point you'll be in the installed system and can run commands as if it was booted21:28
Xeno72@daftykins: log befor or after reboot? It's an important question, because after reboot you have a desktop crash logged, before reboot you have not21:28
jrmTJ-: K21:28
jrmthere21:28
TJ-jrm: to get back to the host env use "exit"21:28
devalaeden__D,  and thanks for the link...21:29
daftykinsXeno72: it's pretty obvious which log i'm after, i'm sure you can work it out :)21:29
TJ-jrm: let's find out if it has network ability, so you can pastebinit reports for me easily "ping -c 5 www.ubuntu.com"21:29
jrmTJ-: it does have network ability21:29
Xeno72@daftykins: I do not understand...21:30
TJ-jrm: yeah :) ... OK now let's ensure we have the tool: "apt-get install pastebinit"21:30
jrmTJ-: sorry, I have network ability outside of the chroot, but not inside21:31
aeden__Ddeval, youre welcome. have a look here http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/x11/blueman21:31
TJ-jrm: Ahhh, OK. it might just be a missing DNS resolver. Let's check. Try "ping -nc 5 8.8.8.8"21:32
jrmTJ-: Yup it is just dns.  I tried potting nameserver 8.8.8.8 in /etc/resolv.conf, but no resolving21:33
TJ-jrm: "/etc/resolv.conf" should be a sym-link to ../run/resolvconf/resolv.conf" - is that the case "ls -l /etc/resolv.conf" ?21:34
jrmTJ-: OK, domain resolution is working inside chroot21:34
TJ-jrm: remember you did that, else it'll break NetworkManager's dnsmasq when you boot the installed system.21:34
jrmTJ-: OK21:35
TJ-jrm: ok, install pastebinit now21:35
jrmTJ-: installed21:35
skinuxI'd like some kind of indicator app that will show over-all connection speed of my wireless as real-time as up to every 5 minutes. Anyone know of such?21:36
TJ-jrm: then show me "pastebinit <( cat <(cat /etc/fstab) <(cat /proc/mounts) <(lsblk) )" (that combines all the reports in one paste)21:36
TJ-jrm: brb... need coffee21:37

TJ-jrm: thanks21:47
TJ-jrm: ok, now "pastebinit <( parted /dev/sdb p)"21:49
TJ-jrm: I'm guessing /dev/sdc is the Live ISO media ~8GB size ?21:50
jrmTJ-: yup21:50
jrmTJ-: parted /dev/sdb p unable to result host ubuntu21:51
jrmTJ-: Could not stat device /dev/sdb - No such file or directory ?21:51
TJ-jrm: errr....!! you're doing that inside the chroot, yes?21:51
YukenI'd like a reminder to flash in the bottom-left of my screen every two hours, on Ubuntu. How would I do this?21:52
jrmTJ-: yup21:52
TJ-jrm: so you're root, and we already know lsblk listed sdb21:52
YukenUbuntu 14.04*21:52
TJ-jrm: try it without the pastebinit parts: "parted /dev/sdb p"21:53
jrmTJ-: Same21:53
jrmTJ-: there is no /dev/sd* under the chroot21:54
TJ-jrm: I think the chroot is missing the /de/ devfs but somehow lsblk didn't need it. what does "ls -l /dev/sd*" look like?21:54
jrmTJ-: not results21:55
jrms/no/not/21:55
TJ-jrm: hmm... OK ... "exit" then "for m in proc/ sys/ dev/ dev/pts; sudo mount --bind /$m /target/$m; done21:55
TJ-jrm: typo, I omitted the "do" ! "for m in proc/ sys/ dev/ dev/pts; do sudo mount --bind /$m /target/$m; done21:56
jrmTJ-: http://paste.ubuntu.com/12102376/21:59
TJ-jrm: Good, that shows there's room in the spare space before partition #1 for grub it install it's core.img so that is no reason for grub-install to fail22:00
TJ-jrm: now let's try it and see what we get: "grub-install /dev/sdb"22:00
jrmTJ-: No errors.  Thanks!  Is there a log that can show why it failed during installation?22:01
TJ-jrm: oh hang oooooon! Did the system boot in UEFI mode? sda looks like it has EFI System Partition, and that would mean you have grub-efi not grub-pc22:01
TJ-jrm: exit the chroot and check if it booted as UEFI or not: "ls /sys/firmware/efi/"22:02
TJ-jrm: and, back in the chroot, we also need to do "update-grub"22:02
jrmTJ-: the /efi directory doesn't exist22:02
jrmTJ-: back in chroot22:02
TJ-jrm, OK so the boot was Legacy BIOS, so that wasn't the reason grub-install failed.22:03
TJ-jrm: the debian-installer and apt sohuld create logs in their own directories under /var/log/ in the installed system22:03
TJ-jrm: the debian-installer log might be the one containing the grub-install history22:04
jrmTJ-: before I leave the chroot I should update-grub /dev/sdb ?22:05
TJ-jrm: just "update-grub" is all you do22:05
TJ-jrm: the device name is only needed for grub-install22:05
jrmTJ-: Done, I'm looking for logs now to see why it fails during installation.22:06
TJ-jrm: I wonder if the chroot script has unmounted /dev/ before running the grub-install? Can't see how it would, but that's what caused your issue with the manual command22:08
Smokiehey guys, does ubuntu have a firewall by default?22:09
k1l_!ufw | Smokie22:09
ubottuSmokie: Ubuntu, like any other Linux distribution, has built-in firewall capabilities. The firewall is managed using the 'ufw' command - see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UFW | GUI frontends such as gufw and ufw-kde also exist. | An alternative to ufw is the 'iptables' command - See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/IptablesHowTo22:09

TJ-linuxthefish: not sure, but jnlp is for Java webstart I think, so possibly linked to icedtea22:12

TJ-jrm: sounds like a bug in ubiquity then (the GUI installer that wraps debian-installer)22:15
TJ-jrm:  worth reporting against that package since you have a syslog with evidence22:15
jrmTJ-: I think it's actually in the Debian installer.  I tried Debian first and it didn't report an error, but it wouldn't boot.22:16

Smokieinstalled vsftpd on my  ubuntu desktop so i can upload content to my webserver running on my ubuntu from the same network22:19
Smokiei get connection refused22:19
Smokieeven when i try to ftp from within ubuntu22:19
TJ-Smokie: have you ensured the ftp service is listening? "sudo netstat -nltp | grep 21"22:20

ikoniaor is the webserver on your desktop too ?22:20
Bashing-omTJ-: Cold coffee and ubuntu are facts of life . I have grown to 'like' my coffee cold !22:21

TJ-Bashing-om: is that what you call it? :P22:24

Bashing-omTJ-: Off topoc. But glutton for punishment, How else to learn if TJ- ++ does not teach ?22:26
SmokieTJ-, let me see22:26
SmokieTJ-, it doesnt look like it, it didnt list anything22:27
TJ-I was trying to incorporate some sophisticated installer encryption options into debian-installer last week - gave it up asa bad job in favour of custom shell scripts. Too much legacy cruft with no documentation in d-i now22:27
TJ-Smokie: that'd explain why you get "connection refused" - check the ftpd config is correct, look at its log files for clues if it isn't starting22:28
SmokieTJ-, will do.. is vsftpd good to use or is there an alternative?22:30
TJ-Smokie: it seems to be the recommendation when needing FTP, but why not use rsync over ssh, or scp, or sshfs. From what you said an FTP server isn't the solution22:31
SmokieTJ-, its 2 wordpress websites running on the server and its easier to update, install plugins etc..22:33
TJ-Smokie: is the server on the same network as the client, no firewall or PNAT between them?22:34
=== john is now known as tables

ikoniaNightyMiggers: problem ?22:35
TJ-Smokie: so the other options I mentioned are a better choice than FTP, and mean you don't have to have another service listening on the server22:35
TJ-Smokie: most servers already have the SSH server, so scp/rsync/sshfs are all possible with that22:36
SmokieTJ-, hmm there is no /var/log/vsftpd.log file created22:37
SmokieTJ-, yes, but like i said, wordpress requires FTP to do stuff from within the admin panel22:37
Smokielike updates, plugins installations etc..22:37
ikoniano it doesn't22:37

Smokieikonia, isnt sftp runs with open-ssh ?22:40
ikoniaSmokie: doesn't have to22:40
