[00:01] all horror :) [01:16] ugh, i hate my neighbours [01:16] in order to resolve the issue with bad wifi signals, they've now resorted to using non-standard channels [01:17] as in the 13 and 14? [01:17] i wish they were available here [01:17] no, 1 6 and 11 [01:17] i got neighbours on 4 and 7 [01:18] i know which are non-overlapping :P [01:18] eh that's not so big a deal [01:19] I'm half tempted to tell people in my block to use 1, 6 or 11 [01:19] 4 and 7 are overlapping, that's the problem [01:25] * daftykins chuckles [01:26] i really don't think it's making as much of an impact as you may expect [01:30] from where i'm sitting, i can see 22 wireless networks [01:30] that's not a problem? [01:35] using wireless is :) [01:42] yeah, wireless sucks, i don't use it on my desktop.. but the tabs and phones do use it [02:54] i can see 2 ap where i am, mine and my landlords... posh area :-) [05:24] morning peeps [05:47] hi all [05:56] hey mappps [05:57] ;] [06:01] not morning. coffee. coffe now, morning later [06:04] hey shauno [06:05] o/ [06:05] all nighter shauno ? [13:25] foobarry: Probably not their photo; one of the car itself, maybe. [13:33] http://i.imgur.com/qOOPqDY.jpg [13:33] pretty bad. i cannot get out of the road, nor can the garbnage truck [13:39] even the white van is illegaly parked. too close to a junction === deegee is now known as drussell [14:51] I have a relatively recently built micro server not doing much (yet). I need to move it from a 1 disk install to a 2 disk raid1 array. Should I reinstall using raid1 from scratch or convert the existing install to raid1? [14:59] yes [15:00] probably quicker to reinstall tbh [15:00] I mean, you could add the second disk, make that a 1 disk degraded raid1 array [15:01] That's what I'm seeing from tutorials. But reinstalling from scratch will be simpler [15:21] bigcalm: usually moving stuff around to get the raid metadata on is a PITA [15:26] Looks it [15:26] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_Gz_iTuRMM [15:26] worth a watch [16:16] foobarry: that's a really good theory [16:36] http://cybermashup.com/2015/08/25/how-to-crack-ubuntu-disk-encryption-and-passwords/ [16:40] such a stupid policy.if you cash out over 100 casino ask for your surname..dont need to show any ID or anything..so why bother [16:43] The failed HDD from my raid - I've tried plugging it into another machine via a USB3-SATA cable. tailing /var/syslog shows that the cable shows up but says that no drive is attached. Holding the drive, it's not spinning up or making any other noises. Is it worth replacing the PCB? [16:44] I've found it here http://www.hdd-parts.com/15050601.html [16:44] you can't just swap one for another really [16:44] i thought you can if exact same make and model [16:44] wows my laptop's getting hot [16:45] It's the exact same PCB, down to the revision number [16:45] it has to have the same firmware too - and even then you won't necessarily get access to all the data area on the disk, since disks ship with flaws in specific places that will differ from one to another [16:45] bigcalm: if it's a RAID member why do you need it working? was it a RAID-0? [16:46] It's raid1 [16:46] I just don't like throwing away stuff :) [16:46] I've already replaced the failed drive [16:46] heh [16:47] personally I'd chuck it. once a disk has lost my trust, it'll never earn it back [16:47] I hoard all kinds of stuff, but not disks I can't trust with data [16:47] *nod* [16:48] I'll be taking the drive apart and recycling the bits later then [16:48] if you don't end up getting it to play the Imperial March, we'll be disappointed :) [16:50] another wonky seagate [16:50] This is why I bought a star torx screwdriver set. So that I could dismantle all of my old PATA drives [16:50] heh, how come? i'm sure our electronics recycling point takes them as is [16:51] so unless they're disks you weren't able to wipe in time... [16:51] daftykins: they may do, but I don't trust others with my disks. I want to know I have damaged them enough not to be recovered [16:51] Considering that I can't get this drive to spin up, I won't be able to wipe it from a machine 1st [16:51] sounds like a good excuse to unleash your inner 12yo :D [16:52] * zmoylan-pi hands bigcalm a fubar [16:52] I had a large collection of very strong magnets for a while [16:55] when i have a RAID 5 member pop i don't even wipe it :> [18:02] amazon prime is amazeballs [18:02] free one day delivery ftw [18:04] i find waiting the best part ;) [18:04] but then such a service wouldn't work to here anyway really [18:08] it doesn't work at all here :( [18:08] shauno: yeah but you don't exist [18:09] you just end up paying for the same service level as free shipping already gives you. it's weird [18:11] heh [18:13] in other news, got mpd streaming to the kitchen now. this can only be trouble :D [18:15] uh oh, music during food prep [18:15] juts a shame I can't find anything that does multi-room as well as airplay [18:15] logitech media server \o/ [18:17] airplay does some evil, evil juju to keep everything synced [18:26] I've finally got around to starting to watch halt and catch fire [18:26] just started the first ep [18:42] oh dear, I'm getting teary-eyed about the 80s now [18:44] shauno: sonos and done ;) [18:52] that's a lot of moneys just to replace one closed-source system with another :) [18:55] LMS really does the job, but end devices have to pretend to be a player [18:55] plenty of apps for the main ecosystems available [18:57] shauno: plexmedia/kodi and a tablet music where ever you are ;) [18:59] kodi and music are a really bad combination. I've tried that :/ [18:59] :D [18:59] yep useless in library mode [19:04] completely offtopic .. do the different-sized pcie cards fit in the same slot? [19:04] shauno: yes [19:05] (yes, this is how long I haven't had a PC for) [19:05] shauno: the only difference in longer slots is additional isolated lanes - x1 cards work in an x4 slot fine [19:06] and vice versa (if you can hack the slot to allow the longer connector to stick out the end [19:06] shauno: aiui a 1 will fit in any a 4 will fit in any 4+ and so on [19:06] gotcha [19:06] (I've cut an x1 slot to put an x4 card into it) [19:08] as stupid as this will sound, trying to figure out how to get a toslink port into the microserver :) [19:08] I should know what toslink is [19:09] optical audio .. s/pdif over fibre [19:09] aah [19:10] the easiest way to stop noisy computer psus making my amplifier hum, is to simply avoid running metal between them [19:10] lol [19:10] gotta love noisy audio circuits [19:11] I have optical out on the pi, it's fantastic :) [19:11] and of course it's on all the macs === zleap_2 is now known as zleap [19:56] you can even cut open the end of a slot and put a x16 card in a 1x slot ;) [19:56] though you might want to avoid that where possible... === ahayzen_ is now known as ahayzen === m0nkey__ is now known as m0nkey_ [22:39] m0nkey_: having fun?
