TJ-Got a really strange issue here, in a QEMU/KVM guest running the Kubuntu Wily Live ISO. Opened a terminal and wanted to type the single and double quote characters. I have to press the key twice to get the character, and it looks visually to be correct, but I'm guessing it is actually a UTF char because the command fails00:01
TJ-daftykins: ablest has turned up in offtopic now still asking about openvpn :)00:56
daftykinshaha typical00:57
daftykins<ablest's brain> 1) Install OpenVPN 2) ... 3) Profit.00:58
TJ-some folks just shouldn't be allowed near a computer without a proficiency test... many of them, devs :p00:59
daftykins:)01:00
daftykinsdoing things at your level i have no idea how you cope with the trivial queries01:00
Bashing-omTwiddling thumbs while cogitating on greater matters ??01:02
TJ-You may notice I try to only pick the low-level stuff where the person has some signs if intellect :)01:03
daftykins:D01:03
TJ-I actually find it theraputic... I'm usually stuck on something locally and need to distract my brain from it for a while01:03
daftykinssometimes i fall astray like now, but i tend to prefer to avoid the gaming ones - after all what use is that o001:04
daftykinsah :) i like the warm fuzzies of problem solving01:04
TJ-hahaha I agree with you01:05
TJ-ooo, Pratchett's latest is out today.... goes to check Audible for a download :)01:05
TJ-may not be sleeping tonight01:05
daftykinsimpressive Posthumous release o001:05
TJ-grrr, still on pre-order01:06
TJ-ok, release today, but timezone must be US so probably won't be available until mid-morning01:07
daftykinsthat's always a pain01:08
TJ-I need to clear some books off, the sd card is running out of space. Hate when that happens because I always end up taking off a book I want to listen to a few days later01:09
* daftykins looks at TJ- then back at #ubuntu01:10
daftykinsgadmin is just some friendly frontend for the openVPN client XD01:10
daftykinsthe guy still has no damn service i bet01:10
TJ-Have you ever noticed you can guess the real skill of a user, because it is usually inversely proportional to how 'l33t' or 'genius' their nickname is?01:12
daftykins:D01:12
daftykinsabsolutely01:12
TJ-As soon as I see h4x0r and so on... !01:12
daftykinsin fact the guy with 6's earlier i think i've scared off before by pointing out their advice is terrible01:12
TJ-xubuntu666 ? Yes, he seemed well-meaning but seemed to have a familiar attitude01:15
daftykins*nod*01:15
daftykinsi should probably have started simple like that ;)01:17
TJ-I'd be fuming by now, the user is either using English as their 2nd language and misses the inferences, or is trolling us01:18
daftykins:D01:18
TJ-They aren't clueless, they've got a freenode cloak01:19
OerHeks... wait... then i am not clueless too01:20
daftykinsyay \o/01:20
TJ-I want to go to the kitchen and snack... but if I do 3 dogs join me and stare woefully as if they've never seen food before01:23
daftykins:D01:24
daftykinsi only just had a pizza01:24
daftykinsi need to stop living on Central time in the US, despite being in BST01:24
daftykinsthe peace of the night is so good though01:24
TJ-yeah, me too. I was up at 7am with 3 hours sleep... had a nap from 6-9ish, and now ready for supper and bed01:24
daftykins\o/01:24
=== quaddex- is now known as quaddex
TJ-wow! I think ablest1980 got it .. no wait for it... can't be that simple01:25
daftykins:)01:26
daftykinsi was just thinking that01:26
daftykinsTune in tomorrow: <ablest> so i got a second PC and i am ready to CONNECT!01:26
* daftykins cries in advance01:26
TJ-:P01:26
OerHeks.. then he ends up with a free-vpn-service ...01:26
TJ-I'll have to be careful not to feel too sorry and offer that :)01:27
OerHeksme too,room policy01:27
daftykins:D01:27
daftykinsquite liking that digitalocean one, $5/mo works out like what - £40 a year?01:27
daftykinsthink it has 1TB a month transfer01:28
* OerHeks electronically signed his butt for that01:28
OerHeksI would install the vpnservice at my place, and use the neighbour wifi to test01:29
daftykinsah i had something even easier! there's this TV service that lets you stream UK TV (tvcatchup.com) which a friend of a friend runs, it was blocked in my home island01:30
daftykinsbut then of course, just visiting whatismyip.com works :>01:31
TJ-there's a neat DNS reflector that you can query and it returns your IP... really useful compare to using a HTTP service01:33
daftykinshmm01:34
daftykinsaaah this guy and updated drivers, seriously01:42
daftykinsthese people act like running the latest version number will make your computer open up and hand you 1,000 (local currency units)01:42
Bashing-omAgain; Had all the fun I can stand; can not stand any more. Good night .01:46
daftykinsnn Bashing-om :)01:46
TJ-yeah. I am quite happy staying with 14.04, with mainline kernel to fix some bugs that would break the system01:51
TJ-VMs/schroots for anything more recent01:51
daftykins:D01:54
daftykinssomeone did confuse me last night with why ubuntu's repos have got filezilla x.11 but only way older versions show up01:54
daftykins!info filezilla trusty01:54
ubot5filezilla (source: filezilla): Full-featured graphical FTP/FTPS/SFTP client. In component universe, is optional. Version 3.7.3-1ubuntu1 (trusty), package size 1250 kB, installed size 3102 kB01:55
daftykins!info filezilla01:55
ubot5filezilla (source: filezilla): Full-featured graphical FTP/FTPS/SFTP client. In component universe, is optional. Version 3.9.0.5-1ubuntu1 (vivid), package size 1540 kB, installed size 5282 kB01:55
daftykinsyeah01:55
TJ-how do you mean, "x.11" ? I'm not seeing a problem02:02
daftykins3.11.x sorry02:03
daftykinsi forgot the first digit02:03
daftykinsthey found a manual link to a repo with /pool/ and all that, listing debs for 3.11 yet they're not even listed for vivid02:04
daftykins!info filezilla wily02:04
ubot5filezilla (source: filezilla): Full-featured graphical FTP/FTPS/SFTP client. In component universe, is optional. Version 3.9.0.5-1ubuntu1 (wily), package size 1540 kB, installed size 5282 kB02:04
daftykinsi was confused as to why it's there if it's not referenced02:04
TJ-that's wrong!  filezilla (3.12.0.2-1ubuntu2) wily; urgency=medium02:05
TJ-there's no 3.x.11 in the pool; there is 3.3.1-102:06
TJ-http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/f/filezilla/02:07
daftykinsooh but a 3.12 there02:07
TJ-Yes, from Wily as above02:08
daftykinsTJ-: hey you're the resident boot magician, do you know which versions work with the 32-bit EFIs?02:31
daftykinsassuming it got fixed02:32
TJ-I've not looked into the 32 bit UEFI, didn't realise there was an issue. Is some manufacturer actually using it!?02:34
daftykinshttp://askubuntu.com/questions/392719/32-bit-uefi-boot-support02:34
daftykinsyeah these machines that come with "Windows 8.1 with Bing" are shipped with them to prevent people buying cheap machines to use with Linux02:34
daftykinsi found the above about it02:35
daftykinsnevermind perhaps legacy will do02:36
TJ-Really? hmmm!02:37
daftykinsit came about quite a while ago, so i didn't think it was even a thing still02:40
TJ-OK, there's an easy workaround02:41
TJ-install in legacy mode, use GPT and reserve an ESP. Create an 0exEF02 BIOS BOOT partition about 1MiB. GRUB will install into that.02:42
TJ-Boot the new system in legacy mode, force-install grub-efi-ia32  and remove grub-pc02:43
daftykinsfunky!02:43
TJ-install grub-efi and it'll ensure that the dependencies for grub-efi-ia32 are always met02:43
TJ-*Your Mileage May Vary *Colours May Run *No Dry Cleaning02:44
TJ-right, time for sleep and book :)02:52
daftykinsta-ra o/02:54
TJ-don't stau up too late, and don't forget to put the cat out :)02:55
OerHekssuch boatanchors can be a fire risc, 2005 hardware02:59
daftykinsthis lofty guy?03:01
OerHeksyeah03:01
daftykinsah - started in another channel?03:02
OerHeksnot sure, seen him before03:05
daftykinssounds like that one that i've had a feeling has been deprecated now for some time03:05
daftykinsoh hopefully not the same asshole thatkeeps coming in with the same damn poulsbo netbook :P03:06
OerHeksugh cedar trail ?03:09
daftykinsi really don't understand these historians03:09
daftykinswhy waste time with such rubbish old kit?03:10
OerHeksdrop it, door stop, ..03:10
daftykinsok i'm clocking out03:40
daftykinsOerHeks: g'night \o03:40

EriC^^hey everyone19:50
Bashing-omEriC^^: o/ ; Pleased to see ya !19:52
EriC^^o/ :)19:52
TJ-mmmm egg n chips time :)19:57
Bashing-omsustenance .19:59
daftykinsugh this Nikesh guy, tell him he's got a 32-bit EFI quirk due to having a windows 8.1 with Bing laptop... totally ignores me20:08
Bashing-omdaftykins: One can lead a horse to water, but can not make that horse drink .20:16
daftykins:) too right20:16
TJ-daftykins: I'm not convinced the UEFI is 32-bit. According to the Acer specs for the E11-111 it has a 64-bit OS20:26
daftykinsi definitely concede that there's room for variation, but are you looking at a machine with Windows 8.1 with Bing?20:26
daftykinsregardless, this guy does not help himself to let us help - so i'm sure a standard boot diagnosis would be worthwhile if anyone were brave enough ;)20:27
TJ-Aspire ES1-111M-P2YU20:28
TJ-http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/model/NX.MSNAA.00320:28
TJ-Aug 27 03:20:56 <Nikesh>        daftykins: It's an Acer Aspire E11-11120:28
TJ-I've downloaded the 'BIOS' update and will extract it to check20:29
daftykinshrmm guy says it works now, ah well.20:29
daftykinsho-hum i have my own fire to work on today :)20:32
daftykinsseems i'm staring at an SSD failure20:32
Bashing-omdaftykins: Wow; Nikesh took a sip !20:34
ItsAdamhello20:35
daftykinsBashing-om: :D20:36
daftykinsItsAdam: hello20:36
daftykinsTJ-: i think it's your go ;)20:56
OerHeks"Alibaba routers nextdoor pushing your wifi away" *hips*20:58
daftykinsXD20:58
TJ-back from dinner21:15
TJ-After several rounds of extraction and decompression I have the firmware update Capsule21:16
TJ-Strings indicate the UEFI is based on the open-source EDK2 as most are:21:16
TJ-d:\edk2\MdeModulePkg\Library\UefiHiiServicesLib\UefiHiiServicesLib.c21:16
daftykinsso standard after all?21:17
TJ-It could still be 32-bit21:17
daftykinsah har21:19
daftykinswell he got it booting but has to hit the boot menu then select the hard disk manually right now21:19
TJ-It's the InsydeH2O:  http://www.insyde.com/products21:19
daftykinsdespite the BIOS order being set to HDD, then Windows BM21:19
TJ-Right... sounds like the NVRAM has lost the Ubuntu entry21:19
daftykinsso he might need a manual entry being added, but you're the expert there ;)21:19
daftykinsseems to have gone quiet too21:19
TJ-UEFI won't boot unless there's a Simple Boot Path loader at /EFI/BOOT/BOOTX64.EFI21:20
TJ-That's how removable media can boot... for fixed storage there needs to be an entry in the firmware's boot menu NVRAM if the boot loader is at any other location in the ESP21:20
daftykins*nod*21:21
daftykinsi think i've seen the command around before that lets you add an entry21:21
TJ-efibootmgr ....21:21
TJ-I've found the ACPI DSDT table, there may be some tell-tale strings in it21:22
TJ-Copyright (C) 1983-2011 Insyde Software Corp.21:25
TJ-SYS CORE21:25
TJ-5.31.DT21:25
TJ-12/06/0521:25
daftykinshmm21:26
TJ-It's very nasty! It has a replacement Windows ntdll.dll Core file embedded!21:28
daftykinsoh wow, i wonder if it's doing the same thing as those Lenovo's and injecting a file replacement21:29
daftykinsTJ-: you might be onto something big there21:29
TJ-That's just what I was thinking ... not about the 'big' :)21:29
daftykinshehe21:29
TJ-I don't know why anyone is surprised when it comes to Windows; use it, and you've compromised yourself intentionally21:30
EriC^^heh21:30
daftykinsi believe everything has issues of one type or another, it just depends which OS you'd rather clean up after21:31
daftykinsTJ-: can you dump that ntdll.dll out separately at all?21:32
TJ-January 12, 2002, Bill Gates sent a public email to all MS employees announcing the "Trustyworthy Computing Initiative" - 13 years later and first Tuesday of every month MS releases fixes for more 0-day vulnerabilities, and still issues out-of-band emergency patches too. If Windows didn't already have a monopoly hold, *no one* would touch it with a barge pole21:33
TJ-daftykins: probably, I'm just looking at the 'strings' content for now21:33
daftykinsokie dokie21:33
TJ-There's a heck of a lot of PXE/TFTP network boot code repeated21:34
TJ-StorageSecurityCommandDxe21:35
TJ-02.01.03.0122.0021:35
TJ-UEFI Crypto Library default seed21:35
TJ-That sounds scary! If a crypto seed is embedded in the firmware that suggests the crypto (SecureBoot ?) may be compromised21:36
Bashing-omYears back I was into what the hardware was doing and the software interacing. I really wanted/needed to know. I ask Eindows peiple for info and get told " proprietary info " . I do not like Windows !21:36
TJ-That was the main reason why I walked away from Windows - I did deep technical work on obscure bugs and not having access to the source-code made it 1000x more difficult, and then actually getting MS to release a patch for a known bug could take years.21:38
TJ-Was awful having to tell customers "we've identified the bug, it's in Windows OS, but MS won't commit to fixing it"21:39
daftykins:( that's no fun21:39
daftykinsall my support work is very basic, users tie themselves into their software 'cause they're so married to MS Outlook for email21:39
TJ-It looks as if that firmware is for 64-bit long mode instructions, so a standard build of the EDK221:40
daftykinsho-hum21:41
TJ-MS's modus operandi has always been Embrace, Extend, Extinguish ... they used 'free' to get MS Office/Internet Explorer/MS SQL Server adopted and then when they had everyone by the short and curlies put the licensing costs way up and continue milking it to this day; it's their biggest cash cow21:41
TJ-Although I don't like Apple, at least they sell something people genuinely want, rather than feel forced to buy21:42
daftykinsthey have some lovely option ROM firmware issues too y'know :D21:43
daftykinspluging in a thunderbolt or firewire device i think it was, can overwrite firmware onboard permanently - undetectably21:43
TJ-:) Lack of forward planning... should always have an efuse to make things read-only21:48
daftykinsi've had enough, they're all idiots22:05
daftykins:D22:05
* daftykins clocks out22:05
Bashing-omEriC^^: the_count is a 15 year old, with a lot of promise for our future - so I think .22:29
EriC^^i admire his laziness22:29
daftykinsgenuinely competent, or? :)22:30
EriC^^he asked how to get pastebinit's link into the clipboard22:30
daftykinsoh dear, there is no hope22:30
EriC^^| pastebinit | something_to_send_to_clipboard22:30
EriC^^so i said | pastebinit | xsel , then pres shift+insert22:30
EriC^^it's actually pretty cool, he has a dead mouse so yeah, it's handy22:30
daftykinsoh ok22:31
daftykinskids today don't type22:31
EriC^^lol22:31
Bashing-ombut he do ask some intelligent questions, and seems to have a genuine "want to know" .22:33
