[09:13] top of the morning to you, sire [09:15] morning nucc1 [09:31] Good morning peeps :) [09:33] morning bigcalm [09:35] * bashrc waves [09:42] * leecowdrey waves back [10:06] Why can't I do this? sudo echo "foo" > /etc/foo.conf [10:06] I'm in sudo but it returns permission denied [10:08] * bigcalm resorts to piping echo to sudo tee [10:12] bigcalm: try sudo bash echo "foo" > /etc/foo.conf [10:14] davmor2: aha [10:15] bigcalm: you get the same error if you do sudo cd /etc/foo/ [10:15] is /etc/foo.conf on a readonly filesystem? [10:20] nucc1: no, it was just an example. davmor2 has explained that sudo needs to run bash rather than echo. Echo is a command of bash rather than a program itself [10:20] ok [12:58] whats the best way to backup a non rooted phone ahead of unlocking bootloader [13:01] which phone OS and arch are we talking about? [13:01] moto G android 5.0.2 [13:02] wanna keep as much as possible by way of SMS and whatsapp etc [13:04] does it have custom recovery? [13:05] doesn't have TWRP or CWM [13:06] i believe that i will lose my data if i unlock bootloader [13:06] then i am afraid, i dont think its possible. [13:06] that correct. [14:29] rooting and flashing takes far longer than i ever predict [14:32] you could flash cm12.1, which comes rooted, so you dont need to root it. saves time. [14:33] actually to more precise, it is a simple switch in setting to root/unroot it. [14:33] settings* [14:36] CWM or TWRP aren't sticking [14:39] i get the "no command" screen [15:15] Greetings good sirs. I am having an issue where I'm unable to have any sound registered from my microphone (usb headset with two jacks for sound+mic). I've plugged them in at the back, but no mic sound registered, and the mic volume in sound settings is greyed out at mute. [15:22] foobarry: so your doing, fastboot flash recovery recovery.img - fastboot reboot recovery.img. ? [15:29] brobostigon: i'm working now [15:29] literally 15 times [15:29] in a row, it didn't retain the recovery setting [15:29] now i have the age old issue where android isn't restoring my apps and settings after a reset [15:29] odd. [15:29] so i lost everything [15:30] some things, android stores in your google account, but it isnt much. [15:30] i would suggest you use something like titanium, which allows you to backup alot more. [15:31] yeah [15:31] thats a pain too [15:31] its not storing/backup much? === alan_g is now known as alan_g|EOW [17:12] payday. and it's all gone already [17:13] :-p [17:13] * zmoylan-pi tips diddledan half a dinari... I can play everything else through my monitor speakers, but when I try and set it up for my headphones, nothing but teamspeak plays through it. [18:21] Does anyone have any ideas? [18:22] your probably want to ask in the main #ubuntu - since that's the support channel proper [18:23] hey dafty - it's supermanintights from the idiot who bought a skylake [18:23] ok, I'll ask there as well [18:23] how's it going, all good? [18:23] i think the key part is idiot to run ubuntu on it - not to buy new hardware :D [18:24] yeah nothing much going on here thanks, hrmm should probably go food shopping :( [18:24] Well, turns out linux is the only option. Windows doesn't have hardware support with skylake to run usb devices [18:24] 'run USB devices' that's definitely wrong [18:24] did you try and install 7 or something? [18:24] so he has no CD/DVD drive, and it crashes if we try to install windows via usb [18:24] yeah 7 [18:24] there's a BIOS parameter you have to change to install 7 [18:25] read up on it on the anandtech.com review [18:25] granted, I wasn't around at the time, I trusted him to be able to install windows [18:25] meh, I've invested far too many hours of my life into this, we're sticking with linux for now. We're doing really well, occasional quirks, but everything is running beastly [18:25] ^_^ [18:25] well it's useful to know regardless [18:26] yeah, i think i had to do similar when i was messing around with win 7 and win 8 [18:28] so #ubuntu isn't really giving me much, do the ubuntu forums tend to be good for getting info, I've never really used them apart from on searches, and most tend to be quite old [18:28] (the threads) [18:28] you have to be patient [18:29] yeah askubuntu.com and forums are valid approaches too [18:29] has someone had you use a newer mainline kernel at any point? [18:30] we tried, and it crashed the system. A guy named TJ helped him get back to 15.04 default I think it was where at least the computer works. [18:30] ah yeah [18:30] knowledgable fellow that one [18:30] We did get the sound all working and stuff, but it's not liking switching between sound devices, and now I can't get anything but teamspeak to come through the headphones [18:32] TJ was awesome, was able to help Dan get it all sorted on his own as I was at work at the time, so I had to come on later and thank him, as reading the logs he was really patient and gave brilliant info and advice, walked him through step by step. Legend of a guy [18:33] it's a lot easier when the helpee is competent, some we get in #ubuntu - ugh [18:33] haha i know the feeling [18:34] right i best commit to this food shopping idea [19:32] * diddledan listens to the ubupodcast [19:43] mattermost sounds intriguing [20:25] shauno, is it time for winkelwagen? [20:25] :-o [22:25] is it possible to easily run firefox in a restricted cgroups environment yet? [22:25] ali1234: Good question, not sure; one person I was chatting to was suggesting just running it as a separate user [22:26] i want to limit CPU and RAM usage [22:26] i'm running dev edition with e10s and now instead of using 100% CPU it uses 400% CPU [22:26] RAM should be doable with ulimit [22:26] and several gigabytes [22:26] ulimit is a hard limit though [22:27] cgroups can limit physical memory but still allow the process to swap [22:27] or so i've been told [22:28] ali1234: rlimit_rss in getrusage so that should be a ulimit - 'specifies the limit in pages of the processes resident set' [22:28] yeh, ulimit -m [22:29] not an actual limit [22:29] "the system may give the process more memory when there is a surplus."
