pikurasa_Hello US world! Does anyone want to entertain a problem that I need help with? Would much appreciate it :)02:55
pikurasa_And, yes, I have tried everything I could imagine already trying to fix it.02:56
pikurasa_If you live in MA I will bake you cookies LOL02:57
pikurasa_Basically, I cannot seem to open the Sound Settings or Pulse Audio Volume Control.03:02
pikurasa_For that matter, I cannot even open Gparted!03:02
Unit193If you open them via terminal, what happens?03:02
gsss03:03
gsd03:03
pikurasa_Haven't tried. What is command? I tried "pulseaudio" in CL a few days ago, but that is something different, right?03:03
Unit193pavucontrol03:03
gswhere i am?03:04
pikurasa_This is error for gparted: /usr/sbin/gpartedbin: error while loading shared libraries: libpangomm-1.4.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory03:04
pikurasa_pavucontrol: error while loading shared libraries: libpangomm-1.4.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory03:04
pikurasa_Am I missing a library?03:04
pikurasa_Synaptic hasn't reported any missing libs or broken packages...03:05
pikurasa_I look at Synaptic and it is there...03:06
pikurasa_libpangomm-1.4-1 is installed.03:06
pikurasa_This is what I think caused the problem...03:06
pikurasa_I installed the gnome-shell a while back along side the US desktop environment.03:07
pikurasa_It was a theoretically brilliant idea.03:07
Unit193You're on wily.  Run updates.03:07
pikurasa_On wily?03:07
pikurasa_I should be on Trusty...03:08
pikurasa_Everything looks like it is on Trusty...03:09
pikurasa_I update all the time.03:09
Unit193Strange, figured it was the rebuild of stuff, but you could perhaps be just missing that.03:11
Unit193!find libpangomm-1.4.so.1 trusty03:11
ubottuPackage/file libpangomm-1.4.so.1 does not exist in trusty03:11
Unit193!find libpangomm-1.4.so.103:11
ubottuFound: W:, W:, W:03:11
Unit193!find libpangomm-1.4.so.103:11
ubottuPackage/file libpangomm-1.4.so.1 does not exist in vivid03:11
pikurasa_What I imagined the problem to be is that Gnome and xfce are sharing some of the same config files.03:12
pikurasa_Actually, where I am now is a lot better than a week ago. I couldn't even access the desktop a week ago.03:12
pikurasa_lightdm became broken03:12
pikurasa_So I had to go to TTY and uninstall and reinstall it.03:13
Unit193apt-cache policy gparted | pastebinit ?03:14
pikurasa_https://goblinrefuge.com/mediagoblin/u/pikurasa/m/having-trouble-with-gparted/03:24
pikurasa_Do you also want to see the one for pavucontrol?03:33
pikurasa_I tried doing sudo install --reinstall gparted a few days ago when I became fed up with the problem...03:33
pikurasa_to no avail.03:33
pikurasa_Could this have caused a problem... When I was trying to fix my problem to run the GUI desktop environment...03:39
pikurasa_I did run xfce as root a couple of times.03:39
cfhowlettpikurasa, why?03:40
cfhowlettwhy run root?03:40
pikurasa_I don't think that I had the problem before then... but then again. I had a crippling problem at the time and I was just trying to fix it.03:40
pikurasa_I ran as root because the desktop environment wouldn't work AT ALL.03:41
pikurasa_So I just started trying stuff.03:41
cfhowlettpikurasa, that's ... not the way to fix.03:41
pikurasa_And running as root loaded the GUI.03:41
cfhowlettso ... no xfce works perfectly, right?03:41
pikurasa_XFCE works now because I uninstalled lightdm and then reinstalled it.03:42
pikurasa_from the TTY03:42
pikurasa_after I ran XFCE as root and searched the internet for solutions.03:42
pikurasa_I noticed that running as root did screw with some of the config files.03:43
cfhowlettpikurasa, exactly03:43
pikurasa_I have restored from a backup, which fixed the configs.03:43
pikurasa_But now I need to get pavucontrol, gparted, and the gang up and running again.03:44
pikurasa_Is that possible with my current situation?03:45
Unit193Did you ever  apt-get --reinstall install libpangomm-1.4-1  ?03:46
cfhowlettpikurasa, I'd normally say yes, but root introduces a whole bunch weirdness into the equation.  Personally, I'd get a md5sum verified .iso and reinstall rather than chase the tail of residual problems.03:46
pikurasa_Unit193 It worked!!!03:48
Unit193Still would be interesting to know why you got random breakage.03:48
pikurasa_and GParted works!03:49
pikurasa_and pavucontrol!03:49
pikurasa_Its all back again!!!03:49
Unit193'Welcome.03:49
pikurasa_I am still a computer idiot, but at least the problem on the surface is fixed... LOL03:49
pikurasa_And now I know to never start xfce as root.03:50
pikurasa_Like, now I REALLY know.03:50
pikurasa_I will be telling my grandkids about it.03:50
Unit193Pretty much.  Wonder if the perms on the authority files just got messed up.03:50
pikurasa_I wonder why the GUI wouldn't start that one day...03:51
pikurasa_oh the mysteries of free software...03:52
pikurasa_Okay, I was not serious about the cookies, but...03:53
pikurasa_HERE ARE SOME AWESOME VIDEOS!!!03:53
pikurasa_Check this out!03:53
pikurasa_https://goblinrefuge.com/mediagoblin/u/pikurasa/collection/music-blocks/03:53
pikurasa_This is software I helped guide the development for. Its MusicBlocks, a SugarLabs project.03:54
pikurasa_Made the videos with Ubuntu Studio!03:54
cfhowlettpikurasa, include "made with ubuntustudio" in the credits and/or encode a US watermark.03:55
pikurasa_Thank you! Wife says to go to bed now.03:55
pikurasa_How do you do the watermark?03:56
cfhowlettpikurasa, I used ffmpeg but you could also use avconv or even the gui video apps03:56
pikurasa_Also, I had trouble putting meta data in with Pitivi.03:56
pikurasa_I used Pitivi because KDen Live was too complex for this simple project.03:57
pikurasa_I have used ffmpeg2theora before...03:57
cfhowletthttps://stackoverflow.com/questions/17410394/how-to-render-a-watermark-with-transparency-into-a-video03:58
pikurasa_I have yet to try the newer builds of Pitivi which may work better. I used the Pitivi that was in main repo.03:58
cfhowlettpikurasa, I suspect openshot is the least complex video editor03:59
pikurasa_Pitivi worked great but the version in repos is "buggy" and meta data was non-existent from what I could tell.04:00
cfhowlettpikurasa, tried to view your videos, but the Great Firewall said "no way"04:00
pikurasa_What?04:01
cfhowlettI'm in China.04:01
pikurasa_First time using Media Goblin, but...04:01
cfhowlettpikurasa, China blocks a whole list of websites.  for some reason MG and Dropbox are not allowed04:02
cfhowlettpikurasa, ah!  false!  just took awhile to get through04:02
cfhowlettpikurasa, not bad.  suggestions:  clean up your voice audio.  audacity > sample a non-speaking section > remove noise.  then amplify, compress and equalize.04:04
pikurasa_Okay. Non-speaking section means the sound from browser software synth?04:07
pikurasa_Also, I added "Videos made with all free/libre software, GNU/Linux operating system, and Ubuntu Studio distribution (http://ubuntustudio.org/)"04:07
pikurasa_as a quick credit hack.04:07
pikurasa_Okay, if I don't stop making typing noise over here I will see divorce papers.04:08
cfhowlettpikurasa, another time then.04:08
pikurasa_Thanks for the guidance!04:08
