gox39hi people, I have 2 monitors connected to my  pc and as an os i have xubuntu 15.04 installed on it. during the installation xubuntu was able to boot off the cd and put the 2 monitors in mirror mode. After the installation I get on both screens a white background and a mouse as a login screen. Only when I boot off my pc with only 1 monitor attached to it I get the xubuntu login screen. After logging in I can attach my 2nd monitor to my pc witho09:14
ewethi, I just did a `tasksel install xubuntu-desktop` and `tasksel remove kubuntu-desktop` I might have borked gtk themes but I'm using the default one and it's showing no errors anywhere else but LibreOffice is looking like this: https://i.imgur.com/2atJPll.png https://i.imgur.com/DS7IBLb.png . What's going on?11:32
ewetI have libreoffice-gtk install. It's looking fine when it's uninstalled.11:32
ewet+ed11:32
ewetno ideas?12:19
bazhangtried #libreoffice yet?12:20
knomeewet, can you confirm which gtk theme you are using, and also, what do you mean by "i might have borked gtk themes" ?12:22
ewetI'm using Greybird and all the other Xubuntu defaults. However, I'm seeing some themes that don't usually belong  (Clearlooks-Phenix, QT-Curve) or don't work (Unity looks like Clearlooks for example)12:25
ewetbut LibreOffice looks largely (the black) the same no matter which theme I choose12:26
knomeand which xubuntu version are you using?12:29
ewetUbuntu 15.04 - Linux kubuntu-pc 3.19.0-28-generic #30-Ubuntu SMP Mon Aug 31 15:52:51 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux12:31
ewetI have no themes in either $(Home)/themes or /user/local12:32
knometry the following:12:32
knomeinstall qt4-qtconfig (if not installed)12:32
knomethen run qtconfig-qt412:33
knomeand make sure the "GUI style" dropdown box says "GTK+"12:33
knomethen close the qt config tool, save settings and restart libreoffice12:33
ewetNope, that wasn't it. But I found it: I had to disable `Options: View: Use OpenGL for all rendering`.12:41
knomeglad you found it12:42
ewetstrange, though ...12:44
ewetthanks for you help :)12:45
knomenp12:45
knomeenjoy xubuntu12:45
ewetI'll enjoy it more than the recent Kubuntu incarnation, I tell you that for a fact ...13:03
zetheroowhen I add a Xubuntu system to the domain I have issues with the user and groups tool13:35
zetheroowith Ubuntu this issue doesn't exist13:35
zetheroocan I install the user control tool in Ubuntu on Xubuntu?13:38
Garheadezethroo I've never tried but in theory it should work.13:39
zetheroook13:39
zetherooI am experiencing this same issue with Lubuntu, Xubuntu and Ubuntu MATE13:39
zetherooseems to be something in the way these distro's handle user management13:40
Garheadezetheroo: I don't do much with users currently so I can only be some much help13:43
zetheroook ;)13:44
malinux_hi16:33
malinux_I would like to know if it's possible to keep the icons placed on the desktop from one session to another, with xubuntu trusty?16:33
malinux_sorry : I mean on the same places16:33
holsteinmalinux_: that should be happening16:33
malinux_hi holstein, here is melodie, I am doing a version for the Mali and only this detail fails to work16:34
Alina-MHello all, i just installed on my legacy machine xubuntu, but it is working pretty slow, though winXP is flying on this computer, please help me to configure it and make it flying as winXP16:34
malinux_I was asked to arrange the desktop so that the icons would be grouped16:34
malinux_and restored at each session at their same place incase the kids in schools would mess it up16:35
holsteinmalinux_: oh, so, you want to *not* be able to move them?16:35
malinux_this works for the first user created, but the other users created after have the same icons, just not staying at the expacted place on the desktop16:35
holsteinAlina-M: well, unfortunately, that can be the case, since, the hardware was likely created with windows support in mind..16:35
malinux_holstein, it does not matter if they move, but they should be restored identical at each session16:35
malinux_identically placed especially16:36
Alina-Mholstein, :-/ what can i do?16:36
holsteinAlina-M: i would look at the graphics drivers, and have reaslistic expecations.. this would be more like comparing windows 8 or windows 10 with current xubuntu.. which, as you know, likely dont run on the hardware16:36
malinux_holstein, and it is due for this evening, I have to upload the final iso16:36
malinux_because we install this week-end to more than 30 machines16:37
holsteinAlina-M: well, idealy, the creators of the hardware would support linux, for you.. but, since they likely dont.. try looking at your GPU drivers, and see if there is a proprietary one available..16:37
Alina-Mholstein, 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation NV28 [GeForce4 Ti 4200 AGP 8x] (rev a1)16:37
holsteinAlina-M: right.. so, there will be a proprietary driver.. "legacy" one.. ideally. look in the GUI for additional drivers, and try it16:38
malinux_I copied the files from .config/xfce4|xfce4-session|Thunar and .local/share/applications to /etc/skel from where they are again copied to the homes of the users16:38
Alina-Mholstein, i looked there, but its empty no drivers in that list :(16:38
holsteinAlina-M: and, there may not be any16:38
malinux_I don't know what else can be missing16:38
holsteinAlina-M: if nvidia is not providing support for that hardware any longer for any OS.. then, it may be, the open drivers are doing the best they can16:39
malinux_in the home of the first user it all works, I can mess the icons around, remove them, they are restored the right way.16:39
holsteinAlina-M: what are the specs of the machine? what is lagging how?16:39
holsteinmalinux_: well, lets say, they are "restored the way you intend"..16:39
malinux_is it possible that there might be a bug ?16:39
cfhowlett"possible" sure.16:39
malinux_holstein, I created two more users, and the result is the same16:39
Alina-Mwell its working laging on every aspect, from moving window from one corner to another, to launching browser, and trying to scroll mouse down, it is happening with lags, everything happening with lags :-/16:39
malinux_ok never mind... :/16:40
malinux_next time I'll  do Malinux on top of Bento Openbox16:40
holsteinAlina-M: sure.. but, what are the specs of the machine? and, what OS are you trying? xubuntu 14.04? 15.04?16:40
Alina-M15.0416:40
holsteinAlina-M: i might try something closer to the era of the machine16:41
holsteinAlina-M: what are the specs of the machine, again? i wouldnt expect newer linux kernels to support it "better"..16:41
Alina-Mholstein, http://pastebin.com/6FdFxxJf16:44
holsteinAlina-M:  i mean, how much ram? what CPU? etc.. you may just have unrealistic expecations..16:46
holstein!nvidia16:46
ubottuFor Ati/NVidia/Matrox video cards, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VideoDriverHowto16:46
Alina-M2GB16:46
holsteini always refer to that ^ and the model of my specific card.. *before* installing, i try a lot of different kernel version live16:47
holsteini try the vesa driver.. etc..16:47
malinux_leaving, good evenin g16:48
holsteinAlina-M: you can search "linux *the exact model of the PC*" and see if there are others using that machine and linux, and see what they say16:58
holsteinAlina-M: if you'd like to share details, id be more than happy to help you search..16:59
Alina-Mhmmmmm16:59
holsteinAlina-M: searching GeForce4 Ti 4200 AGP 8x ubuntu turns up lots of old posts17:00
holsteinhttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsVideoCardsNvidia older drivers, that, im just not sure work with modern kernels. you will have to just try it. or, simply try the vesa driver, and see if the GPU driver is lagging the desktop17:00
Alina-Mhow to try this vesa?17:01
Alina-Mi never did that before17:01
flocculantI had similar card a long time back - might be better supported in 14.0417:01
holstein!vesa17:01
ubottuvesa is the default video driver if X can't find a better one. Also see !x17:01
holsteini would try 14.04 on the hardware, for sure17:01
Alina-Mso i download 14.04 and reinstall it now?17:01
holsteinas i said, you wont get better support from newer kernels.. if anything, it will phase support out for the older stuff17:01
holsteinAlina-M: there is not a quick-fix answer for this. the hardware creators promised you support for windows.. and, you'll be responsible for implementing other operating systems on it17:02
xubuntu63wHello room.17:02
flocculanthttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=220852317:02
flocculantAlina-M: not looking good post 12.0417:03
holsteinbut, the vesa driver may be just fine, for most of your needs..17:03
Alina-Mwell, i dont know the command for this vesa driver anyways17:03
holsteinyou may also have luck with a debian stable based OS.. something more from that era17:03
xubuntu63wQuick question for ya. Can any of you activate the Power Menu in LightDM with any keyboard shortcut? (It's supposed to be F12)17:03
holsteinAlina-M: there is no command for it.. its a configuration to use the vesa driver, and its not a fix. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=127020917:04
holsteinAlina-M: i will use "safe graphics mode" from boot17:04
holsteini will work with live iso's as much as possible, til i learn what drivers the hardware supports best..17:05
xanguaxubuntu63w:  isn't supposed to be alt+F12¿17:06
holsteini will try an xorg.conf forcing vesa, knowing how to undo that from tty.. not worrying about the desktop geometry, and other settings..17:06
xubuntu63wSo, anyone successful with the keyboard shortcut for the Power Menu in LightDM?17:07
xubuntu63wAccroding to this: http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2014/04/lightdm-gtk-greeter-1-8-4 it's supposed to be F12.17:08
xubuntu63wI've tried every combination of Ctrl, Alt, Shift & F12, and nuthin'. No joy for me.17:09
xubuntu63wwondering if other see the same thing I do.17:09
xubuntu63wIf so, this might be a (minor) bug. If not, then it's gotta be my setup, methinks.17:10
xubuntu63wAlthough, I'm on a recently installed, stock Xubuntu 15.04 with a US keyboard & layout.17:10
xubuntu63wAnd Alt+F4 does bring up the "Shut Down" dialog.17:11
flocculantxubuntu63w: possibly a regression - that's gone through some changes since then17:12
xubuntu63wflocculant & xangua: Thank you for your responses. I'll look more into it later. Gotta run now. Thanks again.17:13

PsynoKhi1hi17:36
PsynoKhi1I have a 32bit Xubuntu 14.04 that's become slow as molasses at e.g. reading the local apt package database, unpacking with tar17:38
holsteini usually test hardware at that point, if its something that just happens, all of a sudden, and not a kernel upgrade, etc17:39
PsynoKhi1the changes since the last know good states are that I installed the vivid kernel, virt-manager and 16GB extra RAM (I started with 8GB, so I expect the PAE kernel to be installed from the start), the issues do not happen on a 64bit installation I dual boot on the same HDD17:41
holsteini would just try loading my last known good kernel17:42
PsynoKhi1holstein, good point17:46

xubuntu22wHello19:06
xubuntu22wI'm a new user, having trouble in the terminal.19:06
xubuntu22wI just removed a decent amount of pre-installed software and so I'd like to run this command to remove all config files dpkg -l | grep '^rc' | awk '{print $2}' | xargs dpkg --purge19:07
xubuntu22wI receive the following message after doing so "dpkg: error: requested operation requires superuser privilege"19:08
xubuntu22wHowever, I used the sudo command to run it in terminal.19:08
xubuntu22wSo, using sudo, shouldn't I have superuser privileges?19:08
krytarikxubuntu22w:  dpkg -l | grep '^rc' | awk '{print $2}' | xargs sudo dpkg --purge19:10
xubuntu22wI'll try that19:11
xubuntu22wSo I had typed sudo in the wrong spot?19:12
krytarikYep.19:12
xubuntu22wOkay, thank you19:13
xubuntu22wWorked19:13
apoc_is there a quick way to install broadcom bcm4322 wifi driver without internet connection?19:30
apoc_*on the machine where the driver is needed19:30
holstein!broadcom19:30
ubottuHelp with Broadcom bcm43xx can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx19:30
holsteinyou'll just have to get the packages somehow.. i typically just go take the machine and wire it up..19:31
apoc_ok, thanks guys19:31
holsteini have followed the "no internet connection" instructions, though, and it worked..19:32
bohu_anyone else having problem with keyboards getting disabled in Xubuntu? Every keyboard I try stops working after a few minutes.19:40
bohu_usb keyboards19:40
bohu_the weird thing is they stay disabled during reboot so I can't even get into bios19:41
holsteinbohu_: no.. i might look at my hardware, at that point.. make sure a USB stick stays connected.. if im using a HUB, bypass it.. if i have another machine, test the USB keyboard there19:41
bohu_thanx holstein19:42
bohu_tried keyboard on a friend's machine so I know it works19:43
bohu_google suggested enabling legacy usb support in bios. That didn't help19:43
holsteinlikely not google making that suggestion.. but, at least thats a decent test for if the hardware works.. is it *all* usb keyboards? any other usb devices work in unexpected ways?19:44
bohu_Are you suggesting I may have a flaky usb port? I'll investigate that.19:44
holsteinbohu_: im suggesting, the motherboard could be failing.. the USB ports.. simply the USB hardware/motherboard not supporting linux well..19:44
bohu_only usb keyboards giving problems. But they were all plugged into same port19:45
holsteinso, its just that one port, then?19:45
holsteinis it a "blue" one? usb 3.0?19:45
bohu_don't know. Once the keyboard stops working, moving it to another port does not re-enable the keyboard19:45
bohu_could Parole have something to do with it? Each time a keyboard failed I was watching a movie in Parole.19:46
holsteinwell, think of it this way.. its like a detective job.. and, sure.. something with VGA or who knows could crash something that breaks it..19:46
bohu_hmmm....19:47
holsteinis that the case? only when you watch a video? it happens?19:47
bohu_yes19:47
holsteinso.. what type of codec? is it just the one codec? etc..19:47
bohu_mkv and mp4. haven't tried others.19:48
bohu_maybe parole wants to manage the keyboard for some reason?19:48
holsteinbohu_: test the item playing in *another* player. find the trigger19:49
holsteinis it the codec? is it the player? etc..19:50
bohu_this keyboard has lasted 30 minutes so far but haven't started Parole.19:50
holsteinwell, its not an issue of time, then? is it?19:50
bohu_Gonna wait another hour with no video play just to be sure, then try VLC, Gnome-mplayer and then Parole to see what happens19:50
holsteinits not "lasting". its that, you havent used the trigger, which, is either the player, or the codec? or something crashing an element.. etc..19:51
bohu_the other keyboards only lasted a few minutes19:51
holsteinbohu_: i dont know about different keyboards19:51
holsteinbohu_: i say, dont do all of them at the same time19:51
holsteinchoose one, that you can make trigger.. be prepared to reboot, and try live isos. and tail logs.. etc19:52
bohu_that reminds me.. once a keyboard fails, it stays that way. Even if I boot from the Xubuntu liveDVD. But the keyboard will work on another computer.19:53
bohu_That's what confuses the snot out of me...19:53
bohu_is it the bios, the motherboard or something with usb ports or the media player. This might take a while to solve19:54
bohu_gonna google the computer's model number and see what turns up. Be back in a bit.19:55
sOlar_eClips-Ehi21:55
knomehello21:56
sOlar_eClips-EI need help21:56
binaryhermitwhat's wrong?21:57
* binaryhermit will help if he can21:57
sOlar_eClips-EI am trying to install ffmpeg21:57
sOlar_eClips-Eand enable libmp3lame21:58
sOlar_eClips-Ebut I don't know how21:58
knomehow are you trying to install ffmpeg then?21:59
knomeor more exactly, what is it you are actually trying to achieve?21:59
sOlar_eClips-EI want to be able to record screen with x264 and libmp3lame22:00
knomeinstalling the packages ffmpeg and libmp3lame0 should get you the packages you want22:01
sOlar_eClips-Eyes but appa22:02
sOlar_eClips-Etaparently I can't install ffmpeg from terminal22:02
knomeor just lame22:02
knomeok, why?22:02
sOlar_eClips-EI found a website that explains how to compile libmp3lame22:04
sOlar_eClips-Ebut I get errors22:04
knomeookay, and why would you like to compile it?22:04
knomewhy don't you use the packages available in the repositories?22:05
knomedo you know at all what you are doing?22:05
sOlar_eClips-Eno I'm newbie22:05
sOlar_eClips-EI just followed instructions22:05
sOlar_eClips-Etfrom that website22:05
knomeok, then you should stick with what is available from the repositories22:05
knomedo you specifically need to use those encoders to record your screen, or would anything go?22:06
sOlar_eClips-EI preffer to use those encoders22:06
knomeok, so which application is it you want to use?22:06
knomei assume you have one in mind since you have followed some instructions22:07
sOlar_eClips-Efirefox, gaming cube 222:07
knomeno, i'm referring to the application you want to *record with*22:07
sOlar_eClips-Eahh ok22:07
sOlar_eClips-Edirectly from ffmpeg22:08
knomeok... then you likely only need to install ffmpeg and lame22:08
knomeif you want to do that from the terminal:22:08
knomesudo apt-get install ffmpeg lame22:08
knomethere are GUI options for recording your screen too, but if you insist on doing that from the CLI, it's your choice22:09
sOlar_eClips-Ehow to remove ffmpeg22:10
sOlar_eClips-Et?22:10
knomeexcuse me? didn't you want to install it?22:10
sOlar_eClips-EI did a ./configure to a file22:11
knomeok22:11
knomethat's fine, doing that won't install anything yet.22:11
sOlar_eClips-Eand I also did a "make"22:11
knomethat's fine as well.22:11
sOlar_eClips-Eand an "Install"22:12
knomeok...22:12
sOlar_eClips-Ebut I got errors22:12
knomefirst of all, do you still have the files you used to build and install ffmpeg?22:12
knomedon't delete them if you do.22:12
knomenext, what kind of errors were they?22:13
knomeyou can use a pastebin to send them to the channel22:13
knome!pastebin | sOlar_eClips-E22:13
ubottusOlar_eClips-E: For posting multi-line texts into the channel, please use http://paste.ubuntu.com | To post !screenshots use http://imgur.com/ !pastebinit to paste directly from command line | Make sure you give us the URL for your paste - see also the channel topic.22:13
sOlar_eClips-Eok Im going to repeat the process to see which are the errors22:15
knomedon't - if you don't know what it is, don't do it22:16
sOlar_eClips-Eok22:16
knomecan you post the url to the instructions you used?22:16
sOlar_eClips-Esure22:16
knomethat will help us debug what you need to do to uninstall ffmpeg cleanly... is possible22:16
sOlar_eClips-Ehttps://trac.ffmpeg.org/wiki/How%20to%20quickly%20compile%20FFmpeg%20with%20mp3,%20aac%2B%20and%20x26422:17
knomesOlar_eClips-E, ok, while i figure that out, let me remind you:22:19
knomesOlar_eClips-E, the best way to install software is via the pacakge manager(s)22:19
sOlar_eClips-Eok22:19
knomesOlar_eClips-E, there aren't many situations when you can't do that, or the packages from the repositories do not work for you22:19
sOlar_eClips-Eok22:20
knomesOlar_eClips-E, furthermore, to keep your computer safe, never do anything you don't understand22:20
knomeespecially if it involves sudo22:20
sOlar_eClips-E-.-22:21
sOlar_eClips-Eok22:21
knomesOlar_eClips-E, ok, in the directory where you ran "make" etc22:22
knomesOlar_eClips-E, run "sudo make uninstall"22:22
sOlar_eClips-Eok22:22
knometell me when you are done22:26
sOlar_eClips-E1sorry my I got electriciti problem22:27
knomeno problem22:27
sOlar_eClips-E1I got get some errors while uninstalling22:28
knomeok, please pastebin them22:28
knome!pastebin | sOlar_eClips-E122:28

knomemaybe they also didn't read the first time and didn't run the install command with sudo.22:31
sOlar_eClips-Eok22:31
knomesOlar_eClips-E, ok, in the future, please pay attention to what people are telling you22:31
knomesOlar_eClips-E, i told you *twice* to use a pastebin22:32
sOlar_eClips-Ewhat is a pastebin?22:32
knome!pastebin | sOlar_eClips-E, pay attention to this line22:32
ubottusOlar_eClips-E, pay attention to this line: For posting multi-line texts into the channel, please use http://paste.ubuntu.com | To post !screenshots use http://imgur.com/ !pastebinit to paste directly from command line | Make sure you give us the URL for your paste - see also the channel topic.22:32
knomesee?22:32
sOlar_eClips-Eok22:33
knomesOlar_eClips-E, reading from your paste (the part what i could see), it looks like you didn't follow the instructions properly the first time either22:33
knomesOlar_eClips-E, but in this case, it seems like it's good luck... i don't believe you have "installed" the make you compiled.22:33
sOlar_eClips-Eso what am I going to do now?22:34
knomesOlar_eClips-E, you can delete the directory from within you ran "make" etc22:34
sOlar_eClips-Eok22:34
knomesOlar_eClips-E, now if you want to install ffmpeg and lame from the command line, run: sudo apt-get install ffmpeg lame22:34
sOlar_eClips-Eshould I run "sudo apt-get remove --purge ffmpeg?"22:35
knomeno need to - that wouldn't remove the ffmpeg you compiled anyway22:35
sOlar_eClips-Eok22:35
knomecompiling and installing software with "make install" is an unsupported way to install packages since it can't be tracked by the package managers22:36
knomethey simply don't know anything about the software, it's just some untracked files to them22:36
sOlar_eClips-Eok22:36
sOlar_eClips-EI will try sudo apt-get install ffmpeg lame x26422:37
knomethat sounds much better than compiling ffmpeg yourself without knowing what you are doing.22:38
sOlar_eClips-Emust I type a command to enable x264 and libmp3lame to be used?22:38
sOlar_eClips-Elike --enablelibmp3lame?22:39
knomethat's a compile time option.22:39
sOlar_eClips-Eoh I see22:39
knomei would think you would have to give ffmpeg some options when you start recording the video22:39
knomebut i haven't done that enough to know much about it22:40
sOlar_eClips-Eok22:40
sOlar_eClips-Elet me see if it works22:41
sOlar_eClips-Eit works22:47
sOlar_eClips-Ethanks alot22:47
knomeyou're welcome22:47
knomejust remember... don't run anything you don't understand22:47
knomeit saves you a lot of trouble22:47
sOlar_eClips-Edo you now how to enhance encoding quality for minimum video bitrate and maximum videoquality?22:48
knomenope.22:48
sOlar_eClips-Eok22:50
