jgdxstakewinner00, mount the phone? As in mount it as a disk?06:25
undertaskerI'm having some USB problems with my aquaris 4.5. Is this already known? Flashing is a hit and miss, and works ~1 out of 10 times.06:58
Stanley00undertasker: which tool did you use? mtk flash tool?07:00
undertaskerudo apt update && sudo apt install ubuntu-sdk07:01
undertaskerSorry, wrong buffer07:01
m0n5t3rundertasker: last time I did a flash (switching to rc-proposed, so no bootstrap) adb push kept hanging; I thought it was adbd on the phone initially, but it was the one on my computer that was to blame07:01
undertaskerubuntu-device-flash07:01
m0n5t3radb kill-server and flashing again worked like a charm07:01
m0n5t3r(with android-tools-adb from vivid)07:02
undertaskerI think is either adb or the USB itself, when using ubuntu-device-flash, it hangs most of the time while pushing the files to the phone.07:02
undertaskerWhen I stop it, the phone is no longer visible via adb devices.07:03
Stanley00undertasker: well, adb won't allow connect while your phone is locked. So, my recommend is use ubuntu-device-flash to download all the images first, and then, unlock your phone, and run ubuntu-device-flash to flash07:03
m0n5t3ryup... in my case it worked fine after restarting adb on the computer07:03
m0n5t3rStanley00: if the device is locked adb will refuse connections immediately, it doesn't hang07:04
undertaskerThe thing is, the phone is only detected when I plug it into a USB3 port of my Thinkpad, not USB2. On my other nbotebook (Acer), it works with USB2.0, but flashing always hangs.07:04
undertaskerUnlocked all the time.07:05
m0n5t3rmaybe try another cable, some phones / ports are picky07:05
undertaskerAlready did. All cables I tried work perfectly with other Android phones and tablets (also for flashing)07:06
undertaskerI also tried an external USB hub (powered). No change.07:06
m0n5t3rfor instance the Thundersoft Flame only worked with 2 or 3 of my cables (Firefox OS, would have been a nice porting target, too bad I lost it)07:07
undertaskerThe notebook can deliver 2A at it's USB ports, the hub 4A, so this can't be the problem07:07
m0n5t3rno idea then... on my Asus it works on all ports, but adb hangs sometimes07:08
undertaskerThing is, on the Lenovo notebook, I run Linux Mint in a Virtualbox VM, but it nevertheless works better than the native Linux on my older Acer.07:10
undertaskerBTW: are the flashtools also available for Arm? Because I have lots of ARM boards. Maybe they work better.07:11
jgdxundertasker, does this correspond with phone lock?07:13
undertaskerNope07:13
undertaskerUnlocked all the time an configured to stay awake all the time.07:13
undertaskerI have the impression that it works better after I cleared the local cache, so the files get downloaded again, but this might be just coincidence.07:14
jgdxthat operation is local and not on the phone though07:15
undertaskerBut it appears to me that when the files are already downloaded, the tool starts too many pushes simultaneously, and that locks up the USB port.07:16
undertaskerMaybe noise on the USB lines, maybe too many interrupts.07:17
jgdxgoogle virtualbox usb issues?07:17
undertaskerIs there a method to push the files one after another, instead of all at the same time?07:18
undertaskerAs I said, the VM works sometimes, a native Linux never.07:18
m0n5t3rI guess you could clean up the cache directories, have ubuntu-device-flash download everything and then push them by hand07:18
undertaskerAnd the native Linux runs on an older Acer notebook, that is otherwise rock-stable. It's even a notebook that was designed for and came with Linux.07:19
m0n5t3rthere are a bunch of archives + corresponding sighatures and a shell script07:19
jgdxundertasker, adb push <file> /cache/recovery07:21
jgdxfrom http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~phablet-team/phablet-tools/udbflash/view/head:/main.go07:21
undertaskerIs there a description of the flashing process? Like, what files are needed where, and how to trigger the process?07:21
undertaskerAh, ok, the sourcecode should do.07:24
dholbachgood morning07:31

justCarakasundertasker: yes, you can import your contacts into telegram, that goes trough the content hub, and there you select what contacts telegram can see08:15

davmor2undertasker: trust what app08:22
popeydavmor2: telegram08:24
ogra_undertasker, thats good, luckily in ubuntu you dont need to trust any app ;) the system keeps them well enough guarded that you dont need to care ;)08:26
ogra_by design no app can access data from any other app ... nor can it access any system resources08:26

guest42315Inoki, not exactly release notes, but you can get an idea about what is targeted for OTA7 https://launchpad.net/canonical-devices-system-image/+milestone/ww40-201510:24
InokiThank you guest42315!10:25
guest42315Inoki, have fun! :D10:25
InokiOk, I see no mention of fixes for the BQ about GPS not working on cellular, no VPN being added, no caller ID toggle...10:27
popeyInoki: do you have bugs for those?10:29
Inokipopey lemme do a quick search10:30
Inokipopey https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/location-service/+bug/149278310:31
ubot5Ubuntu bug 1492783 in location-service (Ubuntu) "GPS does not work on my Bq E5" [Undecided,Confirmed]10:31
InokiI have the exact same as Stuart, GPS just doesn't work over cellular, gives incorrect results and many apps can't even use GPS whilst on cellular.10:32
popeyjohn-mcaleely: seen ^^10:33
john-mcaleelypopey, noted. Hopeful to pick this up soon10:34
popeykk10:34
undertaskermorphis: Yes, it's a "Bring Your Own Device" network, so it has internet access.10:34
undertaskerI have the same problem with GPS, bq4.5. Sometimes it works, sometime not, and even when it works, some apps don't get a position, and the position isn't stable.10:36
undertaskerI'm shortly before flashing Android. At least, Android has a working email client.10:37
jgdxconstructive!10:38
InokiAlso, against which packages should I file the following bugs: I cannot record any video on my E5. When I switch from taking pictures to recording videos the phone freezes 100% of the time. Then VPN capabilities to be added and lastly to be able to show/hide my number.10:38
jgdxInoki, camera-app, camera-app and canonical-devices-system-image10:38
popeyhttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/Avengers is a handy reference10:39
undertaskerI don't need games, I don't need funny sounds, I'm ok with slowly loading apps, but I need working email, otherwise the phone is useless.10:39
davmor2Inoki: Vpn is there already there is no gui though,  iirc the gui is hopefully set to land in OTA710:39

Inokiundertasker: exactly the same on E5! Thanks!10:43
jgdxdavmor2, /me starts panting10:44
undertaskerI don't know why bq sells this phones to everyone without a warning. They should state that it's a developer device, and the software isn't stable yet.10:44
undertaskerOtherwise they'll get them all back.10:44
davmor2undertasker: Inoki: did you allow the mic to access the camera app?10:45
undertaskerThe camera app never askek me, but that's a good clue to check out.10:46
Inokidavmor2: I'm pretty sure I have. So far I allowed everything I was prompted for and agreed to.10:46

undertaskerSame here10:49
guest42315o_O10:50
davmor2Hmmm10:50
undertaskerOn the other hand, I don't need to record videos with sound, so it could stay there. The camera app should also work without sound.10:50
Inokidavmor2: I'm in the process of filing a bug for it, should I continue?10:51
Inokior perhaps some suggestions10:51
undertaskerHow/where are the access rights stored?10:51
undertaskerI have shell access to the phone right now, so I'm open to suggestions.10:52
davmor2undertasker: trust store will be the thing tracking access10:53
undertaskerAnd that is a daemon?10:53
davmor2no idea where10:53
InokiMeanwhile https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/camera-app/+bug/149546110:54
ubot5Ubuntu bug 1495461 in camera-app (Ubuntu) "Phone freezes when trying to record a video" [Undecided,New]10:54
undertaskerMay be something different, because here not the whole phone freezez, but only the app.10:56
InokiOk, what the heck? Now I tried again, I hit the record button, it prompted me to allow mic access and recording all of a sudden works? Before I tried about 6 times and it didn't?10:57
InokiThis either way needs revisiting.10:58
davmor2Inoki: yeah you possibly hit the issue popey  described10:58
undertaskerNow when I hit the record button, the app doesn't react anymore, but the live view is still running.10:59
undertaskerGuess what? Now it works. But without sound, as there's still no app having access to the mic.11:02
undertaskerInoki: After a reboot, the app asked me for mic access, and now I can record videos with sound.11:21
ogra_yay for races :)11:22
Inokiundertasker: I'm thinking that perhaps it's first necessary to check access, then you get prompted.11:22

jgdxseb128, you're back!11:34
undertaskerDo we have informations about how to access the FM radio of the BQ 4.5?11:53
popeyI don't think that's been exposed yet.11:54
=== alan_g is now known as alan_g|lunch
undertaskerIs there any information at all? Android has no FM radio api, so the radio apps have to access the radio directly. But there are universal FM radio apps, that detect the chips. It would be interesting to see what chip such an app detects on an Android E4.5 or E5.12:03
popeyundertasker: I don't know of any info about the radio. I suspect it's not high on the priority list (given things like GPS robustness etc)12:05
jgdxi think lp is struggling12:08
undertaskerI'm asking not because i need fm, but it would be a nice project to start app developing.12:10

m0n5t3rmkay, found a reliable way to make the aquaris reboot itself in a matter of minutes: pathwind18:49
kenvandinem0n5t3r, oh?  how's that?18:52
kenvandinemust be something that's causing a crash18:53

m0n5t3rkenvandine: nothing in syslog, the UI freezes and then the thing reboots18:59
ogra_checked /var/crash ?19:01
m0n5t3rhm, let me check19:01
m0n5t3rthe most recent crash file is _usr_bin_trust-stored-skeleton.32011.crash19:04
m0n5t3rbut I made it reboot about 5 times (I didn't say "reliable" in vain :P)19:05
m0n5t3rI'll have to cobble together a connector for the serial port one of these days, now that my pogo pins arrived from China19:06
kenvandineit's a problem if a game can trigger a system crash19:06
m0n5t3rit's not just the game, before I switched to rc-proposed I was getting reboots while scrolling in the twitter app, for instance19:07
ogra_that sounds more like a hardware issue to be honest19:09
m0n5t3rit was stable on the previous stable version, this started after the last stable OTA19:09
ogra_(or kernel/driver, though then i would expect others to see it)19:09
kenvandinei haven't seen anything like that19:09
ogra_yeah, same here19:09
kenvandinealthough i don't use my krillin for long periods of time anymore19:09
m0n5t3rrc-proposed is more stable than... stable :)19:10
ogra_well, it isnt QAed (well, it is, but only after you recieved it)19:11
ogra_so it can always have bugs19:11
m0n5t3rI knows19:11
ogra_:)19:11
m0n5t3rlike when the welcome screen keyboard didn't show up 2 updates ago until I rebooted again :)19:12
m0n5t3rnot being able to type the password is a bit of an issue :D19:13
m0n5t3rcompu^phone rebooting occasionally, less so, if it's not often19:14

old_benzHi all21:36
old_benzI have a Nexus 7 (flo) that I tried to install Ubuntu Touch on this weekend, and failed.21:37
old_benzI followed the guide on the developer website, added the SDK, repo, ran ubuntu-touch-install21:37
old_benzit installed the custom CWM recovery, and got stuck at that point.  When the recovery boots it complains about being unable to mount /cache/recovery/last_install a few times21:38
old_benzMy Nexus 7 is a recently released, revised device21:38
old_benzThere is a thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-7-2013/nexus-7-2013-qa/mount-recovery-t3064562 to install a "custom" recovery on this device, as other recoveries don't seem to be able to see all the partitions (block devices?) on the device21:39
old_benzI have to have this recovery installed in order to install ROMs on my N7, no other recovery works.21:39
old_benzIs it possible to install Ubuntu Touch using ubuntu-touch-install without installing the included CWM recovery?21:40
old_benzI got my tab with 5.0.1 out of the box21:42
old_benzI guess my question is: since the N7 is a "base" device for Ubuntu Touch, are the developers aware that there are bootloader differences between N7 models?21:45
mcphailold_benz: as far as I know, there is only one supported N7 variant21:50
old_benzmcphail: Is it the device shipped with 4.4 android?21:50
mcphailold_benz: I don't have one, so I'm not sure. I think it is the wifi-only 2013 device21:51
old_benzindeed, there are differences in the 2013 "flo" model devices21:51
old_benzdevices shipped with 5.0.1 have a bootloader that refuses to boot anything other than Android 5 and above21:52
mcphailold_benz: I vaguely recall someone rolling their install back to 4.x to allow flashing ubuntu21:52
old_benzThere is a patched bootloader available, I will try flashing that bootloader tonight21:52
old_benzsounds promising.  Thanks!21:53
mcphailold_benz: I think the ubuntu adb doesn't communicate with android 5 devices, which is a further problem21:53
mcphailold_benz: let me know how you get on. I've been thinking of tracking down a nexus 7 to try21:54
aquariusjamesh, are you around?21:54
old_benzok, I will try tonight and post my results here22:02
old_benzthanks again22:03
jpastorehi, I was wondering how plausible it is to get ubuntu-touch on a device not listed in the wiki. I have a samsung note 2 i317. it's currently bricked and I think I need to do a jtag repair. afterwards I wanted to load ubuntu on it. is that possible?22:45
k1ljpastore: if you dont want to port it yourself (which is not a beginners task), you could look at xda if someone already tried that.22:47
old_benzjpastore: if there cyanogenmod for your phone22:49
old_benz*is there22:49
jpastoreI think so22:49
jpastoreit appears so.22:49
old_benzhttps://developer.ubuntu.com/en/start/ubuntu-for-devices/porting-new-device/22:49
old_benzread over that and see if it's something you can do?22:50
old_benzIf you've never built a ROM you could start by trying to build cyanogenmod, much more support for that I am sure.22:51
jpastore_does this mean ubuntu is booting on the hardware or is it operating in a vm like container? someone warned me that might be the case22:52
old_benzUbuntu boots on the hardware22:52
old_benzandroid runs in a container22:53
old_benzthat's as much as I know, I dont have a device with Ubuntu Touch and I've just looked at it yesterday a little bit22:53
jpastore_can you send me that link again? web client bounced22:54
old_benzhttps://developer.ubuntu.com/en/start/ubuntu-for-devices/porting-new-device/22:54
k1ljpastore_: ubuntu-touch needs to use containers to use the android drivers since most hardware only got android driver blobs.22:55
k1ljpastore_: you might be confused from those "install ubuntu/linux" apps for android which actually only run a chroot22:56
jpastore_k1l: so when I boot ubuntu touch is it loading in a container or is it acting as a host and loading android in a guest container to have some hardware access?23:21
old_benzjpastore: Ubuntu boots as the "host"23:22
old_benzit then launches a container with proprietary blobs.  THis container talks to the hardware (some of it anyway)23:23
jpastore_ok are there any security rists from that container? I hear about android's major security risks which is my primary motivation for trying this project.23:26
old_benzit depends on what you define as security risks23:29
old_benzsomeone can shave your devices' CPU layer by layer, reverse engineer the CPU, defeat the hardware encryption, and get what you have off your phone23:30
old_benz;)23:30
old_benz10 years of work for a team of many many people and very expensive hardware23:31
old_benzor they can punch you in the face at an interval of one minute indefinitely until you tell what you have on your device23:32
old_benzhave a great night! :)23:32
