Wumbo_about to install kubuntu over ubuntu - will grub be messed with at all?  Dual booting with windoes05:02
rritochDoes anyone know why kernel  3.19-0-28 (security update) doesn't show up in grub? Apparently I can't even boot to it.05:07
rritocherr, 3.19.0-2805:10
rritochuname -a reports I'm on grub 3.19.0-20 even though 0-28 is installed. I can't seem to figure out why it won't boot05:11
rritoch3.19.0-28 dropped me to a ramfs shell05:12
rritochOk, well looks like the last part was my own fault, I used initrd*28 with vmlinuz*2005:16
rritochI can boot to 3.19.0-28 but only by editing the grub entries on boot, even though grub-update lists the *28 kernel it doesn't end up in the menu05:16
rritochAlso, the *28 kernel does list my HDMI, unlike *2005:17
rritochHDMI audio that is05:18
rritochWell, manually editing /boot/grub.cfg worked... Still not sure why it was never put in the menu05:20
rritochI'm temporarily in XFCE, having KDE problems, but this *28 kernel is driving my HDMI graphics, and listing HDMI sound05:25
rritochand I have HDMI + sound with this *28 kernel that doesn't autoconfigure05:31
rritochNow to figure out why KDE doesn't start anymore05:31
rritochDoes KDE drop a logfile? The KDE loader gets about half way and returns to the login screen05:32
rritochKDE issue solved by renaming /etc/asound.conf to /etc/asound.conf.bak05:33
rritochhiteball: All my problems were solved with the 3.19.0-28 kernel (security update) which for some reason doesn't automatically add itself to my grub boot menu05:35
rritochAt least for now, 5 minutes from now it'll probably all die again.05:35
hateball:)05:38
rritochhateball: I cleaned my motherboard with isopropyl alchohol and a toothbrush, which probably didn't hurt any either.05:38
rritochhateball: But the kernel was the real problem05:38
rritochhateball: I've been down this road before when I was repairing digital cable converters, everything would finally work and by the time it made it to QC it was already broken again.05:40
rritochThis GPU has never really been used though, so I need to "cook" it.05:41
hateballthere comes a time for everything to just be destroyed, and for us to move on05:41
rritochhateball: True, I gave up on my R9's but this IGD has never been used before so I don't see how it could have been damaged, even with a corrupt PSU05:44
rritochAnyhow, does anyone know of a good game to cook this GPU with? I'm not trying to burn it to the ground, just ensure that all the solder is set properly as it's never been used.05:45
rritochI have flightgear, but not sure if that uses the GPU or not05:46
rritochDoes anyone know how to stop KDE from switching windows when you try to click on a title bar but there's a window behind the titlebar which steals the focus?05:53
hateballrritoch: does the game need to be FOSS?05:56
hateballplenty of free games on Steam05:56
rritochFound it. Window Behavior > Titlebar Actions > Titlebar & Frame > Left Button x Active > Select Raise05:56
rritochhateball: Yeah I just need it to cook the GPU, I'm not much of a gamer05:57
WAndrehi, is there an ETA for Plasma 5.4 for 15.04?05:58
hateballrritoch: could try sauerbraten I guess, it's in repos05:58
hateballWAndre: it's not coming afaik05:59
hateballthere is the kubuntu-ci ppa but it doesnt have everything, like translations05:59
rritochwhat about the glxgears? Will that heat up the GPU?05:59
hateballWAndre: it's already in 15.10 tho, and 15.04 is not an LTS so you'll be upgrading soon enough06:00
hateballrritoch: if you leave it on for long perhaps06:00
hateballrritoch: there are the unigine benchmarks as well06:00
hateballthis is quite !ot, but the channel isnt very busy right now I guess06:01
WAndrehateball: thanks06:02
rritochWell, glx gears seems to be working well enough. The chip is hot to the touch even though there's no sensor that I can see for it.06:09
rritochhateball: Anyhow, thanks for your assistance yesterday. I just needed to take some time to cool off and get a clear head. I intend to replace most of this hardware when the next LTS is released. I just need something that's functional enough for the next few months.06:17

VolundI have a problem. Cannot boot into my Kubuntu desktop. I was spending all of last night rearranging my NTFS hard drives, chose to switch video drivers, and was doing  few other things. I'm booting into recovery mode but I don't exactly know how to troubleshoot what's wrong. One thing I did think of was checking /etc/fstab because my /dev/sdc2 entry was now invalid due to some gparted action,...19:08

Guest184hello, i want to use a PC keyboard with a mac layout, complete with right location of CTRL CMND and so on. any idea?21:56
bprompthmmm22:00
bpromptGuest184:    short answer, is remap the keyboard keys :)22:01
sithlord48every mac keyboard i have used "just worked"22:02
Guest184bprompt: how exactly though? there is a menu for that, but whatever i choose as layout does not work22:02
bprompt<sithlord48> every mac keyboard i have used "just worked"    <----  btw22:03
Guest184sithlord48: you misunderstood the question22:03
sithlord48Guest184:  so you ahve a mac keyboard or you want to use a regular keyboard22:03
bpromptGuest184:   have you installed kubuntu on the mac yet?   it prompts for a keyboard layout BEFORE the installation22:03
Guest184let me clearify, PC keyboard on a PC which should aks LIKE a Mac KB22:04
Guest184act*22:04
sithlord48its only ctrl, alt and meta that move right?22:05
* sithlord48 goes and grabs a mac keyboard..22:05
Guest184no22:05
Guest184its also things like the AT sign which dont work now22:06
Guest184so it seems it did change something22:06
sithlord48maybe you should look in system settings ->input Devices -> keyboard -> advanced22:06
sithlord48it has options for keyboard layout changes.22:07
Guest184there you can switch ctrl fot alt, ive seen that22:07
sithlord48if you want more then that you may need ot make your own layout22:07
Guest184but it seems it cant change it in the way a mac would be22:08
sithlord48you want the keyboard to work as it would on mac os ?22:08
Guest184yes22:08
bpromptGuest184:      I see "apple macintosh" in the keyboard layouts lists btw22:08
Guest184bause i use mac at work, but use PC at home22:09
sithlord48try that layout. you may have to restart ot have it accually stick22:09
Guest184of course i tried it22:09
Guest184 it does seem to change some things22:09
sithlord48Guest184:  you must know different oses will have differnt features for the keyboard. like on windows you can alt + numbers to put an ascii code22:09
Guest184but just half22:09
Guest184when its working, it should spell an AT sign when i hit the "real" ALT+L on the KB22:11
sithlord48idk about being able to do that i have never tried such a thing22:11
Guest184because on mac, CMD is on ALT position, which actually acts like a CTRL key on windows22:11
Guest184thanks that you try to help anyway22:13
Guest184wait, i managed something22:14
Guest184only the ctrl buttons and similar seem to be at the wrong place now22:16
anon__sithlord48: btw, do you know why mouse wheel scroll direction change is not working22:17
anon__because thats also the other way around on mac22:18
sithlord48anon__:  yeah and it annoys me everytime i use mac os... and i have no idea why it don't work22:26
anon__sithlord48: so it doesnt work for yout either? i mean there is an option for that in the mouse settings, but it just dont do anything.22:28
sithlord48anon__:  i dont' run linux on a mac.i dislike the way scrolling works on mac os.22:29
sithlord48anon__:  im have not tried to change it . if anything i would change it in mac os if possible as that is the only DE taht does it that way22:29
anon__sithlord48: on mac, you cant even disable mouse acceleration in the gui, horrible22:30
sithlord48anon__:  i try not to use mac os when possible because of stuff like that ..22:30
anon__sithlord48: if you disable it via console, you cant change the speed of fhe mouse without re-enabling the acceleration22:30
anon__sithlord48: its no choice for me, designers usually have to work with mac at work22:31
sithlord48anon__:  and i feel for anyone forced to use any software with out choice.22:32
anon__sithlord48: yeah thanks22:32
anon__sithlord48: its all neatly designed, hardware and software wise, but ergonomics and functionality is not for my liking on Mac22:34
sithlord48anon__:  i agree i have used mac os for a long time since about system 7 days.. and Os 10.5 was mabye the most functional after that seams every time i see a new version its w/ less keyboard shortcuts and forcing you to use it a certian way more and more22:35
anon__sithlord48: i see. i was avoiding Macs before. its like pick your poison with OS's anyway22:37
sithlord48anon__:  i like you didn't have a choice we used them in school... and windows at home mostly and linux when i could get it to work22:37
anon__sithlord48: i really want to use linux as my main OS, but i always end up going back to windows after a while because of the lack of professional software and games22:38
KSXthe problem with mac is apple22:38
KSXanon, lack of games?22:39
anon__im on dual boot again, but it really sucks to go back to windows for something22:39
anon__ksx, not lack, more not the ones i may want to play22:39
sithlord48anon__:  i mostly use linux.... for everthing.. anytime i would duel boot i would never boot windows cause i didn't need it .. if i want a game either it need a native version or has to work in wine.. or i get it for console...22:40
KSXanon__, what games are you talking about?22:40
anon__ksx basically most games besides classics/emulation22:40
KSXyou can even play gta 5 on linux if you want22:41
anon__ksx, if you compare the librarys, sure, linux cought up well, but its still a massive gap22:41
anon__if you manage to pass through your GPU22:41
KSXthe gap is basicly non-existent22:41
anon__but i need a secong gpu for that22:42
KSXif you have a nvidia gpu, you should be fine22:42
anon__only 1?22:42
KSXlinux is better than windows in every aspect22:42
anon__well...besides the ones i mentioned, yes22:43
anon__if you manage the passthrough, it may change, but its not that easy to do i think22:43
KSXwhatever22:43
anon__ksx, well, you did not answer. just one card is needed you say?22:44
KSXwhy do you need 2 cards?22:45
KSXbtw, sli and crossfire works perfectly on linux22:45
anon__as far as i know, you need a card for the host (linux) and 1 for the passthrough22:45
KSXhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16dbAUrtMX422:46
anon__ksx, like ive said, 2 gpus hes using22:50
