neonixcoderI am planing to upgrade 10.04 to 14.04 on number of remote machines which are connected through 3G network. Before upgrading these servers in the field I want to  test the upgrade process. Upgrade process went fine but when we are restarting server in lab I am getting "error: the symbol 'grub_xputs' not found.00:00
neonixcoderGrub rescue>". I can recover it with live CD but the issue is how can we eliminate this issue with out occuring..00:00
neonixcoderAny suggetions?00:00
neonixcoderI tried installing grub before reboot..00:00
neonixcoderThat did not solve my problem..00:00

nullxhey all, having the oddest issue i've ever seen... my internet speed is fine, but on lan any transfer is severely bandwidth limited00:26
nullxI can get about 600kb/s lan, and 900 megabits on the internet (yes, my internet is that fast)00:26
nullxNFS/Samba are like 600kb/s max, and SFTP is even worse like 20kb/s00:27
nullx600kb/s is verified on two different devices, one wired, one wireless thats right in front of the router00:27
daftykinsif you're using a speed test versus real world file copy, that's not a good comparison00:28
daftykinstry using iperf to check the LAN00:28
nullxk00:28
nullxill see what i can do with iperf00:28
daftykinsideally it'd be a single contiguous large file too00:29
nullxjust googling how to iperf00:29
daftykins(for a standard samba or NFS test i mean)00:30
nullxgetting good speeds on iperf00:30
nullxabout the max of the wifi on my phone (38 megabits per sec)00:30
nullxas for samba and NFS that's what I already did and measured the speed00:31
daftykinsyou don't have two wired devices to test?00:31
nullxmy wired device is my kodi box without a keyboard unfortunately00:31
daftykinscould be a bad disk at either end :>00:31
daftykinsso, SSH?00:31
nullxI also tried doing dd on the drive00:31
nullxand it wrote really fast00:31
nullxand read really fast00:31
nullxno errors00:31
nullxover SSH it was even worse like 20kb/s00:32
nullxits just such an odd issue00:32
daftykinsno i meant SSH to run iperf on the HTPC00:32
nullxoh gotcha00:32
nullxyeah its a windows htpc00:32
vmontecoHello!00:32
nullxbut i bet theres iperf for windows00:32
daftykinsah, iperf is available on Windows too00:32
nullxill see what i can do00:32
nullxyeah00:32
nullxbrb ;)00:32
TJ-nullx: the low speeds; is that transferring many files, or just one large?00:33
nullxnot even one large.. it used to be able to view 20 gb mkvs without issue, its struggling on 1gb mkvs00:33
daftykinsso streaming, not file copy...00:34
nullxI switched from sharing on a windows pc to having a dedicated linux file server00:34

bindimy point is i had a similiar sounding problem and a "fix" was to mess with the mtu :P00:41

TJ-bindi: nullx MTU can be set via NetworkManager connection-manager, or if using ifupdown, in /etc/network/interfaces00:41

VolundI have a PS4 that plugs into my secondary monitor via HDMI, then I run a headphone cable from the back of the monitor to my PC's sound card Line In00:44
nullxbindi: weird thing to need to do mtu00:44

nullxill set a really low mtu00:44

davidlinuxidiotdafty:  Windows Boot Manager is the last possible boot order, I set it as such so that hopefully grub would load first but it still boots to windows 800:44
daftykinsnullx: that's ridiculous :)00:45

nullxit is I have to agree00:45
nullxbut it'd be nice to actually be able to watch shit :P00:45
davidlinuxidiotdafty: acer BIOS don't really have many options00:45
daftykinsdavidlinuxidiot: not the boot order, but the boot device - possibly under a hard disk priority menu00:45
daftykinsdavidlinuxidiot: i've heard more options become visible once you set a supervisor password00:45
nullxnot just that it'll probably mess up my internet speed lol00:46
davidlinuxidiotthat might be true let me go back to that and come back here if I can't finger it out, thanks good point00:46
TJ-nullx: what is the layout of your network devices?00:47
nullxTj: basicly modem/router -> switch -> devices00:47
nullxits a dumb switch00:47
nullxand direct to this pc though no switch00:47
TJ-nullx: so the router is also Wifi ?00:48
nullxI didn't have this issue doing SMB over windows00:48
nullxyeah00:48
nullxsame pc everything wired wise worked 100% in windows 700:48
daftykinsi bet you're using 15.04 huh00:48
TJ-nullx: and the problem transfers are DEVICE_1 <=> router <=> DEVICE_200:48
daftykinsfor samba hosting00:48
nullxlike I said no change if its NFS or sftp00:49
nullxright Tj00:49
nullxbut the other thing that's odd is iperf shows really high b/w between devices00:49
TJ-nullx: is the router Linux, and can you gain an admin terminal on it?00:50
nullxnah its a really shitty isp specific one00:50
nullxI plan on turning it into modem only and getting an AC router sometime soon00:50
TJ-nullx: iperf results tends to suggest name resolution, or disk access, as suspects00:50
nullxI tested disk access... so name resoluton?00:51
nullxresolution*00:51
nullxso do you think by adding to hosts file it'll make a difference?00:51
wymillerlinuxnullx: But you said your connecting through IP, correct?00:51
nullxcorrect00:52
TJ-nullx: this is why I asked whether the issue affects transferring a single, large, file. name resolution may be done once per file, so 1 parge file shouldn't see the slow-down.00:52
wymillerlinuxYeah, I was gonna say, check /etc/hosts00:52
nullxTj: oh the issue is always one large file00:52
TJ-wymillerlinux: some protocols will do reverse-lookups00:52
nullxit's never multiple00:52
nullxmy tests are on a big rar file actually, and on the kodi its been a 1.2gb mkv00:52
TJ-nullx: OK, that helps. Do you have 2 Linux devices you can test from?00:52
nullxI do not.  Android at best.00:53
nullxI mean00:53
nullxI could take my old pc and turn it into one00:53
nullxjust seems like overkill, though00:53
nullxalso, in case I don't say this later.. thanks for the help whoever has been trying00:53
daftykinsnot when you just need to boot a live session00:53
TJ-nullx: I was thinking about doing a test similar to iperf, but which can be morphed to write to/read from disk too00:53

davidlinuxidiotOk well I don't know programming or linux very well but I can navigate xwindows and I prefer to use it as a OS since windows is horrible and Macs are too expensive.  But I am not super good with the nitty gritty of the OS hence how badly I need you alls help01:37
TJ-davidlinuxidiot: The PC uses UEFI, Ubuntu is installed as Boot0003 in the UEFI boot menu. Windows is Boot0002. It looks as if maybe you have Windows set to the default *and* UEFI fast-boot enabled so that the UEFI doesn't offer the boot menu at boot-time. Enter UEFI setup and look for indications of a setting that sounds like 'fast boot' that is enabled currently01:38

davidlinuxidiotTJ: How do I "enter" UEFI setup?  in BIOS??01:40

TJ-davidlinuxidiot: The PC has no BIOS. It was replaced by UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface). There will be a key you can hold down at power-on that gets you into the Setup01:41

somsip!java | nightwork01:42
ubottunightwork: To just use java you need a "Java Runtime Environment" (JRE) and/or a browser plugin. If that is not sufficient you will need a "Java Development Kit" (JDK) aka "Software  Development Kit" (SDK).  Please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Java about how to install one of three current implementations.01:42

daftykinsGuest51463: well checking you installed from good media is a good step #104:23
daftykinscan't know what to do next without checking that one04:23
guest-DpFgt1hello. I use 14.04.3 64 bits. AMD Radeon R9 380 GPU with propietary drivers from Synaptic, last thing I did was setup the Compiz to have all magical effects, turn it off, and when I tried to login to my PC again it would not reckognize my password, actually, it would try to login bet then return me to the login screen. I Ctrl-Shift F3 and purged all fglrx drivers, reboot and reisntall them, reboot, and still can't login04:23
Guest51463yep, makes sense, thanks04:23

TJ-lelznot: You could possibly encrpyt it using ecryptfs. If your home directory is already using that, and the friend will use a separate user profile, then that would be sufficient - although it doesn't stop the files being deleted09:43

hexagonSun_hello, I have a (potentially stupid) question, my computer has Nvidia graphics, I use the "Nvidia X server settings" proprietary driver, I have to do an underscarn because my tv is too big, or something, but the thing is, everytime I turn my computer off and on again, I have to change to my resolution and underscan on "X Server Display Configuration" ... there's a button en the thing that says "Save to X Configuration File", I clicked thinking14:08
boichevshambat: well https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Loadable_Modules14:09
hexagonSun_I'm still new and I'm afraid I might break something14:11
x44x45x41x4EWhere should I check for system compromise or breaches? Running Ubuntu GNOME 15.04. Also, seeing (unknown) user in my last command output. Should I be worried?14:13

phree_nodehi there. what utility should i use to backup my files, applications, preferences etc? i want to be able to recover them on a disk partition of larger size (i decided that when i first partitioned my laptop, i made the ubuntu side too small).14:16
phree_nodeSo in Windows, I know I cant simply copy my "Program Files" folder over to other computers, because they;ll all be missing DLL files. What about with Ubuntu? If I backup packages and applications I stored in, say, /usr/lib, or /usr/share, can I simply copy them onto a removable device and restore them on another machine?14:20
len_ovohi all. one question. have wine, and several program (photoshop and other)how lock out/in traffic from program which installed in wine?14:22
JethroTuxhi. I've just instlled linuxmint on my eepc 1025c. it has atom n2800. It goes rendering mode with video driver. video card is an intel corporation atom processor D2xxx/N2xxx integrated graphics controller (rev 09). driver actually is gma500. Any suggestion to solve that? thanks14:23

boichevLuyin: it is stored in ~/.ssh/known_hosts14:28
Luyinah, thanks boichev14:28
hexagonSun_how to save my current nvidia config to my x config file doesn't seem like something that will take a lot of your precious time to answer14:28
baffledbearHex: Apologies, I've never used an Nvidia card or hooked up to a TV or I'd try to answer. I'm not familiar with the Proprietary nVidia drivers.14:29
boichevLuyin: and after the first login if there is a man in the middle this hash will be different and you will know that you are not connecting to the right server14:29
hexagonSun_baffledbear: I assume most of the ones not answering is because of that, but I also assume I'm not the first person who uses the Nvidia X Server Settings on Ubuntu. thank you anyways.14:29

bishopsboys and girls something is driving me crazy. When I wake my computer up or start it, my wireless goes offline for a bit then searches for a while, then connects to the network. is this something normal?14:36
nicomachusbishops: yep.14:37
hexagonSun_nicomachus: I'm using the Nvidia X Server Settings...14:37
phree_nodepbx, I want to backup: *applications that I stored in various locations (/usr/share, /usr/lib, and so on), *system settings, *stuff I installed with apt-get, *python and java libraries, *personal files, *hardware drivers. But I can't make a complete image of the partition because I intend to restore it on a partition of a different (larger) size.14:37
hexagonSun_phree_node: Why don't you just enlarge your partition?14:38
phree_nodehexagonSun, this will ruin my Win7 partition.14:38
hexagonSun_phree_node: that would be a good thing :p14:38
phree_nodehexagonSun, that's so helpful to hear.14:39
cfhowletteh?  resizing the ntfs partition is not a destructive act ... normally14:39
jan_s14:39
phree_nodehexagonSun, don't get me wrong, I don't like Win7 that much, but I need it for certain things. I have grown to like Ubuntu very much and that's why I need more space on my Ubuntu partition. But unfortunately I still need to keep a Win7 partition. And Win7 was installed first, so messing with GParted will ruin the bootloader.14:40
nicomachushexagonSun_: are you using the GUI to configure the X Server Settings or are you doing it manually?14:41
cfhowlettphree_node, assuming bootloader = grub, reinstall14:41
hexagonSun_phree_node: I'm not so sure about that last part, anyway, you don't have to explain yourself to random strangers on chats, I honestly couldn't care less what you like or not :p14:41

phree_nodecfhowlett - so is this right--- I can resize Win7 using GParted, running off an Ubuntu memory-stick. (I assume GParted will also resize the Ubuntu partition with no ill-effects). Then I will likely encounter "booting problems" in Windows. To fix this: plug in Win7 stick, in GRUB choose "boot Win7", it will load up the Win7 installation tool, choose "repair installation"  - this will reinstall the bootloader and make Win7 bootable a14:53
mzazaI have a server running Ubuntu which we host on a web application project. This project has many members working on it, sometimes on the same file at the same time. To avoid any problem that could occur incase if someone has comitted changes and the other hasn't seen them yet. Is that where revision control systems comes in handy?14:54
cfhowlettphree_node, if and only if the windows doesn't boot from grub.  my win7 didn't fail when I resized, but it did immediately demand a chkdsk14:54

atdiehmHey guys, got a machine in my office here that kernel panics... the girl said he was giving her fits last week, too, but she'd reboot it and it'd be fine.  (3 beeps from the tower, and then kernel panic ) ... I booted onto the live cd, ran fdsk, it said there were errors, but it didn't seem to say anything needed repairs.  Any thoughts/ideas?16:10
=== Shrooms` is now known as Shrooms
nicomachusatdiehm: in my experience, kernel panics are always untraceable. However, the first thing to check is usually hardware. HDD, HDD cable, RAM. something is pushing out corrupt bits.16:12
bazbing80ENV['TERM'] : this returns the type of terminal we're running our ruby application in, right? I want to know what terminal my ruby application is running in because of discrepencies between SGR codes. I want certain SGR constants in my application to be different based on the terminal the program is running in. Now, ENV['TERM'] for a gnome terminal in Ubuntu returns "xterm". I was hoping for "gnome 6.1.3" but is "xterm" all I need? Gnome is a sor16:13
atdiehmI flipped out the ram... I'm assuming the disc has some errors, but I was confused that fsck didn't ask me to fix anything16:13
bazbing80I thought this was the Ruby channel :P But as you can see it's mostly an Ubuntu question16:13
atdiehmi guess I was hoping fsck would fix things, and I could reboot all happy-like16:13

atdiehmsmartmon-tools is something on the live dvd then?16:14
zathrasno idea. I rarely use ubuntu.16:15
zathrasit probably is16:15
zathrasalso check dmesg16:15
atdiehmI would have run memtest, but as I mentioned since I flipped out ram with another machine and got the same 3 beeps and kernel panic, I figured it was safe to say the ram isn't an/the issue16:15
nicomachusatdiehm: SMART disk check is on the live disk, yes.16:15
zathrasyou are probably right, yet assumption is the mother of all all f*ck ups16:15
nicomachusthat'll check your HDD16:15
atdiehmkk16:16
atdiehmkuz if I can run ubuntu fine off the DVD... that seems like a solid indication that the issue is storage related, eh?16:16
bazbing80Are all terminals based on xterm the same? Are all sgr codes, for example, the same between gnome and another terminal based on xterm?16:19
zathrasHow can I fix (in Ubuntu Precise): perl : Depends: perl-base (= 5.14.2-6ubuntu2) but 5.14.2-6ubuntu2.4 is to be installed16:22

k1l_!spware | SolarNRG21:01
k1l_!spyware | SolarNRG21:01
k1l_SolarNRG: (well, there is no factoid). its not spyware. you dont call your browser spyware, do you? it sends your data out, too. some users want and use that service. if you dont want it disable it or dont use the online search21:03
SolarNRGdoes ubuntu have less spyware pre-bundled than microsoft windows?21:03
SolarNRGI quote ubuntu's privacy policy: e don't share your personal information with anyone except to provide you with services, products, to comply with the law, or to protect our rights.21:04
SolarNRGnote the except part21:04
MonkeyDustSolarNRG  great, but not in this channel21:04

silenthushI'm trying to connect to an SFTP through the default file browser on ubuntu gnome, I got the ppk key and all but not sure how I should go about doing that.21:09
SolarNRGI'm asking a question21:09
k1l_SolarNRG: it does as the policy states.21:09
shudonsilenthush: have you successfully connected to SFTP without using nautilus? (gnome file browser)21:09
silenthushFilezilla just failed on me, keeps giving me a: Disconnected: No supported authentication methods available (server sent: publickey)21:09
silenthushI have via FileZilla before but I did a fresh install of Ubuntu a few weeks ago and now trying to connect to the server.21:10
silenthushI had this before, it's so super random. Once I get it to work it works :/21:11

SolarNRGwhat I want to know is how is it spying on you21:13
k1l_SolarNRG: no, the OS is not spying on you21:13

MonkeyDustrobert___  sudo destroy ubuntu21:14

shudonsilenthush: and share the result :)21:14
silenthush./file.ppk like that yeah?21:14
barfodsome open source organizations wish this functionality was not availbale in debian or ubuntu21:15
MonkeyDustgenii  i thought his question was a joke, apologies21:15
shudonsilenthush: no, "file yourfilename.ppk"21:15
k1l_SolarNRG: so if you know everything, what is the reason you still ask over and over again in here? stop that drama21:15
barfodbut in fact the poltical divide of the repositories allows us to both operate and track freedom oriented softwares. and also utilize non-free of we need21:15
barfodfor instance the only non-free software i use is for my family21:15
ork_robert, windows vista will do the job ;)21:15
ork_thx peeps for this great service, kudoos21:16
SolarNRGWell I ditched windows a few months back, went to Debian but the devs were dicks now I'm using ubuntu and I read this: http://refugeeks.com/ubuntu-spyware-is-it-true/21:16
k1l_SolarNRG: if you dont want that search-words to be sent online dont use the online search. best to disable the online search then.21:16
SolarNRGSo I am concerned21:16
SolarNRGAnd I want to know whether or not my privacy concerns are well founded or not21:16
k1l_SolarNRG: that is a lot of FUD.21:17
silenthushshudon, i get this: mykey.ppk: ASCII text, with CRLF line terminators21:17
barfodSolarNRG debian is a giant organization the people at its core are different than the people you meet in the lobby handing out drinks21:17
silenthushIt's a password protected PPK key as well btw.21:17
shudonsilenthush: huh... weird... afaik ssh only supports PEM format public keys21:17
barfodpretty sure you know who i am talking about21:17
k1l_SolarNRG: i told you 3 times now what and how to not get online results (that you call spyware)21:17
shudonsilenthush: for example, here is my ssh public key: /home/hdon/.ssh/id_rsa.pub:          OpenSSH RSA public key21:17
silenthushUsually on windows I would just have Putty  installed, I open the PPK file, enter the password and just freely connect through WinSCP (or filezilla)21:17
silenthushSec21:17
k1l_barfod: ##linux for that others OS chats, thanks21:18
shudonsilenthush: if you are ABSOLUTELY sure that it's your PUBLIC key (not PRIVATE!) you can safely share it with us to help you further, but i suspect this is the wrong file.21:18
silenthushNah I can't share that file unfortunately.21:18
SolarNRGbut isn't ubuntu essentially built off debian?21:18
shudonsilenthush: hmm... i wonder what the ppk format is.. i used it one time a long time ago with putty, also21:18
barfodk1l_ i think you have a misconception, debian and ubuntu work together21:19
barfodpaultag for instance works on both21:19
shudonsilenthush: try this: http://www.ramsmusings.com/2014/02/20/converting-a-putty-ppk-file-to-a-pem-file-for-accessing-aws-ec2-instances/21:19
silenthushOk sec.21:19
auronandaceSolarNRG: ubuntu is based on debian21:19
shudonsilenthush: once you have a pem format public/private key pair, you should be able to use ssh (sftp is just ftp-like protocol tunneled inside ssh)21:19
shudon(more or less)21:19
k1l_barfod: we focus on ubuntu support in here. the rest is offtopic. like you know the rules since you were asked to read them more than once.21:19
k1l_SolarNRG: so what is the issue with a) dont use the online search labeld search if you dont want the search words to be sent online or b) disable that at all in the privacy settings?21:21
SolarNRGok, let me backtrack, do you think debian comes bundled with spyware, rootkit, backdoor or whatever?21:21
SolarNRGI mean it's open source, so surely someone would have seen it in the source code and reported it right?21:21
k1l_SolarNRG: ubuntu doesnt come with spyware, rootkits or backdoors21:21
shudonSolarNRG: where do you live?21:21
barfodSolarNRG not really no21:21
barfoddebian and ubuntu share much of the same code, i don't expect either of backdoors21:21
shudonSolarNRG: and what's your CPU?21:22
auronandaceSolarNRG: you sound very paranoid and you have been told multiple times that this channel is for support issues and k1l_ has thoroughly addressed your concern21:23
SolarNRGshudon are you about to suggest what I think you're going to suggest, the OS independent "hypervisor" on all hardware?21:23
shudon:)21:23
silenthushshudon, perm key generated, do I now just upload it in the .ssh folder just like the user describes in that tutorial?21:23
shudonsilenthush: well before you do that, you can test the key file21:23
shudonsilenthush: ssh -i yourkeyfile user@host21:23
silenthushoh ok cool, sec.21:23
barfodk11 would you like me to end my support for ubuntu on ##linux and the other channels i frequent?21:23
barfodbecause i did with arch when they acted this way, and i will with you all as well21:24
silenthushI get: Permission denied (publickey).21:25
shudonsilenthush: and i don't know a lot about using publickey authentication in nautilus for sftp, BUT if it uses ssh/scp underneath it all, then it will respect your ssh config, in which you can specify what username and key to use for a given host. but maybe nautilus can remember these details on its own and persist it across lost connection or reboot21:25
k1l_barfod: re read what i wrote. i never said anything like that. if you just want to make again more drama like you are know to do, then please just leave. we want to focus on technical ubuntu support in here. thanks21:25
shudonsilenthush: well that sounds like the private key isn't good for the user@host you're trying to login to21:25
silenthushhmmmm21:25
silenthushIts an SFTP21:25
silenthushShould I specify it like this user@ftp.domain.com21:25
silenthushsftp.domain.com*21:25
shudonsilenthush: well the hostname is not a really important thing at this step. ssh will resolve the hostname to an ip address to decide who to connect to, and then attempt to authenticate you. the error you're getting is an authentication error, not another type of error you could get (for instance if the server only wants you to use SCP but not, say, the bash shell)21:26
silenthushOh wait it works!21:26
shudonsilenthush: the hostname also matters for verifying the the identity of the remot ehost, but21:26
shudonsilenthush: oh great :D21:26
silenthushHad a capital letter in my username :P21:26
shudonsilenthush: heh21:26
silenthushWhat should I do next silenthush?21:26
silenthushI mean shudon LOL21:27
shudonsilenthush: alright so, you probably know more about sftp in nautilus than i do. give it a try and if you still have problems, come back :)21:27
silenthushOh ok, I'll give that a try now then21:27
shudonsilenthush: you say you've done this before with nautilus (gnome file browser) right?21:27
silenthushNah I've done it with FileZilla and FileZilla works too now :)21:27
rebornhttp://imgur.com/GDFv3lg  << any idea what's cause this?21:27
shudonsilenthush: when you did it before, did you use password authentication or publickey authentication?21:27
barfodk1l_ the "please just leave" part was clear from the beginning21:28
shudonsilenthush: ahhh ok21:28
silenthushMan I think I just messed up with the capital letter hahah because I had it in my FileZilla set as well like that (Facepalm)21:28
shudonsilenthush: well, what i would try then21:28
shudonsilenthush: is to create an ssh config file for your user on your system that's running the nautilus you want to use21:28
shudonsilenthush: you should put your private key someplace safe (mkdir ~/.ssh ; chmod 700 ~/.ssh ; mv yourkey ~./ssh)21:28
k1l_barfod: since you didnt stop i muted you. if you want to talk about your entries in the bantracker and your actual mute please join #ubuntu-ops21:29
shudonsilenthush: and take a look at this to see some of the things you can do with an ssh config file http://nerderati.com/2011/03/17/simplify-your-life-with-an-ssh-config-file/21:29

=== Kaizokuj is now known as kaizokujoe
nicomachusasklepian: I just joined so missed the first part of your question. What version of ubuntu are you running?23:06
kaizokujoeHi, I was hoping to get some help with a small problem I'm having.23:06
asklepiannicomachus I'm live booting the 'ubuntu-14.04.3-desktop-amd64.iso'23:06
daftykinskaizokujoe: as soon as you detail it, someone can begin23:06
asklepianand trying to install on a MBP 11,323:06
asklepianI'd like to get wifi up and running so I can fix stuff on the fly during the install23:07
kaizokujoeWell, I have quite a bit of experience with ubuntu from before but I'm having a stupid problem at the moment.23:07
asklepianto do that I need 'bcmwl-kernel-source_6.30.223.248+bdcom-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb' installed23:07
kaizokujoeI'm trying to set up a VM running Ubuntu for a friend.23:07
asklepiandkms was one of its dependencies23:07
asklepianthat's where you came in23:07
daftykinsasklepian: can't you just set it all up on wired first?23:07
daftykinsfar less effort believe me.23:07
asklepianno wired23:07
asklepiannot ethernet port23:07
asklepianno*23:08
kaizokujoeI installed SSH and set up port forwarding and such. I can connect but when I connect over the internet it won't let the user login23:08
daftykinsoh yes, overpriced mac23:08
daftykins:>23:08
asklepianlol23:08
nicomachuslol23:08
daftykinskaizokujoe: define "won't let"23:08
asklepianI'm still hunting for a 1TB PCIe SSD in a thin laptop23:08
kaizokujoeIt says access denied, though when I connect over the local network it does it just fine.23:08
hetiias far as I see some modules like qnx4, nfs, hfsplus andy many more are loaded23:08
asklepianonce I find that I can give up this baby23:09
nicomachushetii: you really need to be on #ubuntu+1, as you've been told.23:09
daftykinskaizokujoe: are you trying to use root which you've horribly created a password for?23:09
kaizokujoeNope23:09
daftykinswhat user then?23:09
kaizokujoeA secondary user I've made for the friend.23:10
daftykinsi suggest you have a browse of auth.log and see what's up23:10
daftykinsi suspect it's locked out23:10
hetiinicomachus: ok23:10
asklepiando I have to install an older version of dkms? 'ERROR (dkms apport): kernel package linux-headers-3.19.0-25-generic is not supported'23:11
nicomachusasklepian: this may be helpful: https://askubuntu.com/questions/470153/no-wireless-when-install-14-04-on-macbook-pro23:12
asklepiannicomachus thanks, but I'm on an 11,3 and following these: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookPro11-323:12
kaizokujoeI don't get anything useful from the log as far as I can see.23:14
kaizokujoeWell, something seems weird but not sure.23:14
daftykinsthe problem is you're not actually using trusty per sé, but 14.04 with the vivid kernel23:14
kaizokujoePastebin the standard still?23:14
daftykinspaste.ubuntu.com is23:15
nicomachusso much cleaner and neater than pastebin...23:15
daftykins+123:16

TheGoldenAngel      My Official Channel : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpW7RV72BJzs7OTSgBEmZCQ/videos23:17
daftykinskaizokujoe: you need a slice from when your pal is trying to test connect23:18
kaizokujoeThat's all that's in the auth file23:18
kaizokujoeJust repeats those same lines and I think those are just from me checking the file.23:18
daftykinskaizokujoe: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SSH/OpenSSH/Configuring#Log_More_Information23:19
asklepianare libc6-dev and linux-libc-dev installed by default?23:19
daftykinswhy don't you run "dpkg -l | grep <those>" to check?23:20
asklepianbecause I'm not booted into ubuntu23:20
daftykinsok well PM ubottu and type !info <package>23:21
TheGoldenAngel      My Official CAM GIRL Channel with skype contact : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpW7RV72BJzs7OTSgBEmZCQ/videos23:24
daftykinsi sure hope they run ubuntu.23:25
nicomachuslol23:25
kaizokujoehttp://paste.ubuntu.com/12563154/23:26
kaizokujoeThere23:26
asklepianok, so I tried installing them and it didn't fix anything23:28
asklepianI got the same error23:28
asklepianso, how do I get around the fact that 'kernel package linux-headers-3.19.0-25-generic is not supported'23:29
asklepian?23:29
daftykinsi'd reinstall with 14.04.1 media if i were you23:30
asklepianeven though, oddly, 'linux-headers-3.19.0-25-generic' is listed as a dependency on: http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/linux-headers-3.19.0-25-generic23:30
daftykinsmight work ok with the default intended 3.13 kernel23:30
kaizokujoeAny ideas for the SSH?23:31
daftykinskaizokujoe: hmm only a guess but check which groups your pals account is a member of versus yours23:31
kaizokujoeHe's in the sudo group only afaik.23:32
daftykinsdoubt it23:32
daftykinscheck means check23:32
kaizokujoeThing is, the user connects and auths fine over local network.23:32
kaizokujoeJust not over the internet, even though it's the same username and password.23:32
kaizokujoeYup, just sudo23:33
daftykinsmmm, restarted since?23:33
asklepiandaftykins where do I find the .torrent file for that?23:33
kaizokujoeYup I have.23:33
daftykinsold-releases.ubuntu.com23:33
nicomachushey kaizokujoe: what's your ssh command look like?23:34
nicomachuswithout addresses, of course. but what's the format?23:34
daftykinslol, ssh user@host? :P23:35
nicomachusI spent ~an hour one day trying to figure out a similar issue to this, and I was typing the hostname instead of the username.23:35
nicomachusyou never know... it would give that error23:36
kaizokujoeWell, I'm using putty but it's basically the equivalent of ssh HOSTNAMEHERE23:36
asklepiankaizokujoe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkcEB96iMFk&index=14&list=PL6gx4Cwl9DGCkg2uj3PxUWhMDuTw3VKjM23:36
daftykinsactually - sudo:    makke : TTY=tty1 ; PWD=/home/makke ; USER=root ; COMMAND=/usr/bin/joe /var/log/auth.log23:37
daftykinso023:37
daftykinsthat almost suggests someone logging in as root23:37
daftykinsthink that's just local sudo use actually23:37
kaizokujoeYeah it's what I reacted to as well when I said something looked funky..23:38
kaizokujoeThat's from me using sudo joe /var/log/auth.log23:39
daftykinsbut that's not even a command23:40
daftykinsbe better if you could make the log section relevant to just the test connection23:40
asklepiankaizokujoe also, this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5UBtE1UqYg&index=28&list=PL6gx4Cwl9DGBpuvPW0aHa7mKdn_k9SPKO23:41
daftykinswhy on earth would you link to video o023:41
kaizokujoeI know how to do both those things..23:41
asklepianwhatev, trying to help23:42
asklepianI'll stop23:42
asklepianlol23:42
kaizokujoeI appreciate the attempt to helping but it's not the first time I'm doing this.23:44
daftykinsthe format of the logs begged to differ ;)23:44
kaizokujoeHow so?23:45
=== BlackDevil is now known as Halion-x
=== Halion-x is now known as Neutrix
daftykinswell as i said it would've been more useful just having the specific portion relevant to the test login being made23:45
daftykinssee whether your pal has any logs too23:45
kaizokujoeHe isn't trying to log in, it's me trying to log in using that user before giving him the login.23:46
kaizokujoePutty doesn't keep logs afaik.23:46
daftykinsso you're using the external IP but internally?23:46
kaizokujoeI'm using the domain name to connect to it externally.23:47
daftykinsbut from *inside* on the LAN?23:48
kaizokujoeYup.23:48
kaizokujoeThough23:48
daftykinsugh not a lot of routers allow that =| you lied in your original explanation :(23:48
=== domaldel is now known as Domaldel
kaizokujoeWell, I didn't lie. I was mearly telling you what I thought would be enough for you to understand.23:48
daftykinsalso forget domains, try the public IP23:48
kaizokujoeDid that too23:49
kaizokujoeIt was the second thing I tried.23:49
daftykinswell no, you made it out like you were testing from the other place remotely23:49
daftykinsalright so test properly now :)23:49
kaizokujoeProperly being what?23:50
daftykinsfrom a remote host over the internet23:50
kaizokujoeI don't HAVE a remote host to connect from.23:51
kaizokujoeNeed to hit up some friends for shells on their boxes for this kind of thing :p23:51
daftykinsor just ask the friend to test connect23:51
kaizokujoeMy last router had no issue with these kind of things.23:51
daftykinscome to me with solutions, not problems :>23:52
daftykinsuh huh, well things change23:52
kaizokujoeHe isn't awake anymore, it's 2 in the morning here.23:52
daftykinsagain, none of these details concern me23:52
daftykinsthere are some out there that don't even allow a locally hosted web server to be reachable internally23:52
kaizokujoeAnd I'm not telling you because it concerns you, it was mearly idle chatter.23:53
daftykinsi don't think you quite understand the sentiment there23:53
daftykinsessentially i'm pointing out that i don't need to know the details, you know what to do... get it done23:53
kaizokujoeYeah and as i said, those things are more for the sake of conversation then to further the problem solving of the issue.23:54
OerHekssounds like 'login intranet-at-work-while-not-at-work'23:54
daftykinsspare me :)23:54
daftykinsOerHeks: ooh dear i hope not23:55
kaizokujoeWell, since it seems idle chatter is not appreciated here and I'm done testing it for today I'll be heading off.23:57
daftykinsaww diddums23:57
