hay207keithzg00:00
keithzgSorry, I probably have to run in a minute or two, but relevant questions for anyone else trying to help you:00:05
keithzg(1) What release of Kubuntu are you using?00:05
hay207ok thanks for trying to help00:06
hay20714.04 lts00:06
keithzg(2) What do your log files say? Ex. you might want to run "cat /var/log/syslog > pastebinit" and share that URL here (or take a look through yourself), see if there's any errors or other such messages related to that device when you plug it in.00:07
keithzgWhen you plug the device in, there should be some lines saying stuff about the system detecting a new USB device, and then what it thinks it is and what it tries to do with it. That might be a good place to start investigating/googling/etc.00:08
keithzgCould try searching for the device as listed by lsusb too, and see if others out there have had similar issues.00:08
keithzgBest of luck, hay207!00:09
hay207ok00:09
hay207i noticed it is detected as mass storage mode00:09
hay207how to change that?00:10

jacwibIm trying to rezise a partition so i can install kubuntu on a computer but it fails when i try to rezise it (filesystem fkd up) and i cant access windows to do a chkdisk, does the check thing in KDE Partition Manager work aswell?05:33
CoffeeJshould work jacwib05:41
jacwibk then, lets try it05:41
jacwibdoesnt really matter if th- ok theres an error05:41
jacwibgave me the same error. dafaq?05:42
CoffeeJwhat program u used to resize it ?05:42
jacwibwell i used kde partition manager, which uses ntfsresize05:42
CoffeeJand it reused to do it or did it not finish ?05:43
CoffeeJ+f05:43
jacwibit tried to do something but refused to because theres an error on the drive05:43
jacwibso it wont fix the drive cuz its broken05:43
jacwibk05:43
CoffeeJtry fsck.ntfs on the command line05:44
CoffeeJif its ntfs05:44
jacwibyea it is05:44
jacwibwait thats not a package. damn05:45
jacwibcant find it in the repositories either05:45
CoffeeJthe package was let me check sumthing with ntfs an ng05:45
jacwibmaybe its fsck.msdos?05:46
jacwibor fsck.nfs???05:46
CoffeeJtry fsck without an trailing should select the riht on if its installed05:46
CoffeeJpackage is "ntfs-3g"05:48
jacwibyeah its already there, im trying fsck /dev/sda205:48
jacwibwell darn it doesnt have fsck.ntfs so it cant do it05:49
jacwibgreat05:49
CoffeeJi m searing the package i used it before on debian so there has to be one05:54
jacwibturns out its a symlink to something else05:55
jacwiba symlink to ntfsfix to be exact05:55
jacwibso im just running that instead05:56
jacwibwell that was fast05:56
CoffeeJdoes it fix the resize problem ?05:57
jacwibonly one way to find out05:57
lordievaderjacwib: Do you have a backup?05:58
jacwibnope it didnt work, lordievader no since this is a school laptop im05:58
jacwibALLOWED to install linux on for testing (possibly converting school)05:59
jacwibbut i need to do a dualboot cuz reasons05:59
lordievaderAny imported files on there? If so, you just learned why backups are important.05:59
jacwibwell the drive still works05:59
jacwibit just wont resize cus some sector is duplicated06:00
lordievaderjacwib: Do you have a Windows installer disc?06:00
jacwibno06:01
lordievaderI'd use that to see if it still detects the install and if it does fix the filesystem.06:01
jacwibhttp://pastebin.com/wkmCaBtH pastebin06:01
jacwibno the system boots, i just cant shrink it06:01
jacwibsafemode wont work cuz they set passwords on it somehow06:01
lordievader"i cant access windows to do a chkdisk" so you can run chkdisk?06:02
jacwibi think if i copy cmd to an accessibility program i can get that to run and do a chkdisk from there06:02
lordievaderIs the laptop managed by your school?06:03
jacwibidk, but im allowed to do this06:03
jacwibwell ok i guess it is06:04
CoffeeJ@ jacwib pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd will reset the password06:04
jacwibk thx, im rebooting then06:04
lordievaderThen let their IT team fix it, they have all the passwords they need to fix the filesystem. And if you explain why you need this they might even do the resize for you.06:04
CoffeeJwhich is ileagal if its not your pc06:04
jacwiboh06:04
jacwibwell the thing is i dont think we have a it team06:05
jacwibwell ill figure something out06:05
lordievaderSomeone put the password on it.06:05
jacwibbai06:05
CoffeeJlast line just for completness dont be afraid the will cheer if u manage to fix the problem06:06

alvinplasma5 in 15.10 beta. Multi-monitor. Second monitor works. Windows can be moved to it and so on, but the background is black and I can't right click there. Any ideas?12:32
TJ-alvin does the 2nd monitor have the control widget showing top-left ?12:33
alvinTJ-: No. The left monitor has everything. The right is completely blank.12:34
alvinLeft one also has that widget.12:34
lordievaderalvin: Try restarting plasmashell12:34
TJ-alvin: there may be clues in $HOME/.xsession-errors12:34
alvinlordievader: How do I do that?12:35
alvinTJ-: Good idea.12:35
lordievaderUsually that fixes the problem for me (gentoo plasma 5.4)12:35
lordievaderalvin: kquitapp plasmashell; kstart plasmashell12:35
alvinWhoa, large file....12:36
alvinlordievader: Well, now both monitors are the same. Both blank12:36
alvinok...12:37
lordievaderWhoops12:37
lordievaderIs plasmashell running?12:37
alvinSo, what happens is that plasmashell needs to be started on both monitors, but it's usually only started on one?12:37
alvinlordievader: Apparently so. It shows up in the task list.12:37
lordievaderNo, starting it once is enough.12:37
TJ-alvin: no, 1 plasmashell per X screen12:38
alvinIs it then not needed to tell it what X screen?12:39
alvinI've restarted sddm. Only left plasmashell is active again.12:39
HaaliNew user works fine with no issues so far.12:41
lordievaderHaali: Right, so the issue likely lies with your profile. Perhaps usefull to rename the .local/share folder.12:42

HaaliNow I have issue with automount partitions, if I mount them to let's say /mnt they would always be mounted for all users even if current user gets all wonkey?(they are currently mounted under /home/user1/media)12:46
alvinHaali: Give some more details. What filesystems for example. And how you are mounting (fstab? manually?)12:49
alvin/home/user1/media is also mounted for all users, but due to the permissions they might not be able to use the mounts12:50
HaaliNtfs mounted via fstab (dity edit with kate12:50
Haaliy12:50
HaaliI have to unmount then remount again12:50

alvinThere are no new plasma releases before 15.10 release I take it?12:57
BluesKajHiyas all13:15
alvinFound it https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=350707 Sadly, it's unconfirmed, so I don't know if a fix will made it before release. Kubuntu tends to release on time, bugs be damned.13:20
ubottuKDE bug 350707 in general "Black screen when undocking/docking laptop with two external monitors" [Normal,Unconfirmed]13:20
alvinespecially since the title is misleading. The bug occurs on a normal dual-monitor setup too.13:21
TJ-alvin: It may depend on the GPU; I don't see the bug13:24
alvinIt's a haswell Intel GPU. I actually intended to run BSD on this machine, but their code isn't ready.13:25
TJ-alvin: I only get bugs with plasmashell with multiple X screens13:26
alvinNot that this is much better. My logs are overflowing with "[drm: intel_pipe_config_compare [i915]] *ERROR* mismatch in dpll_hw_state.wrpll (expected...."13:27
TJ-alvin: there was a patch for that in June I recall13:29
TJ-alvin: see https://lkml.org/lkml/2015/6/30/30313:31
alvinTJ-: That's the one. Now the question is... will this make it into the release?13:32
alvinLogs are terrible... There are a lot of Windows 10 machines in this network. Avahi reports a bug (correctly) about 'invalid respone packet' of those machines. But they fill up the log, and I cant convince systemd to disable avahi.13:34
TJ-alvin: you should be able to override the unit13:35
alvinI'm no systemd expert. So, 'disable' is not enough? How do I say 'really disable'?13:35
alvinHey, I'm even using sudo! ;-)13:36
TJ-it looks like that patch should get into 4.3 via drm-intel-next-fixes13:36
TJ-it's in mainline right now as ee46f3c7d7913:40
alvinBut 4.3 isn't coming to Kubuntu 15.10, right? Maybe that patch13:45
alvinwell, this is a beta after all. We'll live13:45
BluesKaj 4.3 what?13:46
alvinLinux 4.313:46

Haaliuser created under terminal with adduser has no permissions to install updates(or run anything as sudo for that matter)13:49

jubo2Hi..13:54
jubo2And thanks for the great OS13:54
jubo2I'm having display problems13:55
jubo2The HDMI display is grey in the system settings and does not work13:55
jubo2but that was not the primary problem13:55
BluesKajjubo2:  welcome to the display problems club ;-)13:55
jubo2primary problem is that when detaching from doc ( and sometimes even on the dock ) the bottom 3rd of the display is missing13:56
jubo2Is it possible to tell the Kubuntu to redetect / reset the display settings somewhere13:56
jubo2prlly delete some file or something like that13:56
BluesKajno clue about that13:57
jubo2~/.kde is showing following files and directories 'cache-X201-Kubuntu15  data  share  socket-X201-Kubuntu15  tmp-X201-Kubuntu15'14:00
BluesKajI'm still using a TV as a monitor with dvi to hdmi connection, no multiple monitors here14:01
jubo2multiple monitors is the copy-pasters' friend14:01
BluesKaji use multiple VDs for the same effect14:02
jubo2what happens if I just move the .kde directory to .kde-old or so and reboot14:02
jubo2I'm afraid it might leave the system unbootable14:02
Haaliit will just create another ,kde14:03
jubo2but also hope that it will redetect the displays and everything will be just peaches and cream14:03
Haalinot gonna lie, don't think it will fix it.14:03
Haaliyou can try doe xD14:03
jubo2well.. I can access the Kubuntu15 disk from the Kubuntu14 so I can fix it14:03
Haalimeant for error14:04
Haaliits prolly on driver side > hardware > kernel side14:04
jubo2What can I do?14:06
alvinjubo2: play around with xrandr14:20
jubo2ok.. the additional problem of the external display dropping out was fixed by ticking an "enable" tickbox in the display settings14:23
jubo2but the thing with bottom 3rd of the internal display missing won't go away. now it works but as soon as I try to undock the machine it shows back14:24
jubo2Looks like I need to hang in there and wait for 15.10 and install clean14:24
Haaliwell sudo adduser username sudo &&  sudo usermod -a -G username , none pass the "not in sudoers" error.14:28

jubo2but if I cannot get my internal display to work when the external one is plugged in I definately have a problem14:31
jubo2Either I take my external display to go, luckily only 22" or I don't have a computer over there14:31
jubo2the Kubuntu14 on side of this Kubuntu15 still works14:32
jubo2maybe I can mount the /home partition as /home directory over there?14:32
jubo2that or grab all relevant subdirs from home dir and move to Kubuntu14 till Kubuntu15.10 is out14:33
* jubo2 sips his beer14:33

jubo2I would have known the answer at some point but I have forgotten due to not using memory14:50
HaaliHow would I go about that? Have no idea how to list all groups nor which are available in kubu...14:50
