superstepa | I just installed Xubuntu on my Dell Inspiron 3147 and whenever I try to shut it down it becomes completely unresponsive (everything is off except for screen) and hangs at "reached target shutdown". I tried to set acpi to off and force but I've been having no luck with that. Have any of you guys experienced a similar problem? Is there a fix? | 03:46 |
superstepa | It's running 15.04, forgot to mention that | 03:47 |
sinewav | I had the same problem as superstepa, but never found a solution and downgraded to 14.04. Hope it's fixed in the next release because I'm in serious need of an upgrade. | 05:24 |

sim642 | I just accidentally scrolled with my touchpad while holding alt and it zoomed the whole DE in 15.04 | 12:36 |
sim642 | Is that kind of thing configurable somewhere? | 12:36 |
sim642 | didn't find it under "Window Manager" nor "Window Manager Tweaks" | 12:36 |
holstein | sim642: you added compiz? | 12:37 |
sim642 | I haven't added anything DE/WM-wise | 12:42 |
sim642 | unless something else installed it for me | 12:43 |
sim642 | nope, no compiz installed | 12:43 |
holstein | sim642: https://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?pid=33003 this seems relevant | 12:44 |
holstein | i would like to see a "disable desktop zoom" as well... | 12:45 |
sim642 | so it's not configurable? | 12:54 |
holstein | sim642: well, in the most open of concepts, *everything* is configurable.. that link show a few ways to change things. but, AFAIK, there is not an easy tickbox integragted into a UI yet | 12:59 |
sim642 | yeah that's what I was wondering | 13:01 |
holstein | http://askubuntu.com/questions/479465/how-to-disable-alt-scroll-zoom-in-xubuntu-14-04 looks like what i would try | 13:02 |

Dark-Star | Hi! Anyone here who could help me debug some problems with the ACPI power switch of my laptop that's been non-working since updating from 14.10 to 15.04? I guess it might have to do with the systemd switch... | 16:14 |
NotAlbert | hello | 17:56 |
NotAlbert | is it possible for me to change my system architecture from 32-bit to 64-bit without completely reinstalling? | 17:58 |
knome | not really | 17:58 |
NotAlbert | so I really need to reinstall? | 17:59 |
knome | yes | 17:59 |
NotAlbert | but the files would still be retained, right? | 17:59 |
knome | depends how you do it and how you have partitioned your hard drive | 17:59 |
cfhowlett | NotAlbert, "files" ... what files? | 17:59 |
NotAlbert | I mean, some downloaded files | 17:59 |
NotAlbert | like pictures or mails | 18:00 |
cfhowlett | NotAlbert, if you have a dedicated /home no. otherwise, maybe. back up first. do not format /home. | 18:00 |
NotAlbert | I won't wipe home then? | 18:01 |
NotAlbert | I have the 64-bit xubuntu iso file in a usb stick now | 18:02 |
NotAlbert | thanks everyone | 18:06 |

xubuntu80w | How do I save a disk with photos that I have had developed at Shoppers Drugmart, they made the actual photos and inlcuded a disk for a computer. I was unable to save them on my laptop that has xubuntu on it | 18:37 |
xubuntu80W_ | how to save photos from a disk on xubuntu ? | 18:51 |
xubuntu80W_ | I have a disk that a company who developed photos gave me but I dont seem to be able to save it on my xubuntu | 18:53 |
holstein | xubuntu80W_: to save the disc? | 19:07 |
holstein | you can always ask the company how they expect you to deal with it.. or, tell them you need linux support.. but, you should be able to just open the disc and see what the files are, and move them as you please, in the filemanager.. | 19:08 |
holstein | xubuntu80W_: thinking of it like this, is probably not correct.. you are really not trying to 'save them on your computer'.. you just have a disc, from a place with pictures on it.. step one.. try opening the disc.. see that you see pictures.. if you do, you just copy them onto whatever hard drive you like inside xubuntu using the filemanager | 19:09 |
xubuntu80W_ | I didnt see the photos at all when I inserted the disk, nothing showed up on the screen | 19:19 |
xubuntu80W_ | I will try the filemanager | 19:20 |
xubuntu80W_ | thanks | 19:20 |
xubuntu65w | I'm back. After doing a clean install 14.04 LTS xubuntu everything worked ok. After doing updates and restarting per instructions it hangs up after login. Tried several times wired and not. help please | 19:51 |
holstein | xubuntu65w: try the older kernel.. | 19:53 |
holstein | xubuntu65w: you should see grub at boot? and be able to select it? also.. is there a chance you are having a hard drive issue? | 19:54 |
xubuntu65w | i dont have a hard drive SSD, dont see grub at boot | 19:55 |
holstein | xubuntu65w: you dont have a hard drive? | 19:56 |
holstein | or, as you saying, you have a solid state hard drive? | 19:56 |
xubuntu65w | i have ssd only | 19:56 |
holstein | anyways.. all im asking is, if you are certain there is nothing wrong with it.. if not, consider testinng it | 19:56 |
holstein | http://askubuntu.com/questions/16042/how-to-get-to-the-grub-menu-at-boot-time press shift during boot, and select an older kernel.. | 19:57 |
xubuntu65w | it has worked fine with ubuntu for a long time. now i switched to xubuntu. just 30 minutes ago it was ok until i restarted | 19:57 |
holstein | xubuntu65w: xubuntu *is* ubuntu | 19:58 |
holstein | its more likely you would be comparing different kernels.. does the machine boot with the older kernel? the one that was on the machine that you say worked at install? please try booting it from your grub menu | 19:58 |

purukumi | hello @all , is this a help/support channel or do i have to change? :) | 20:29 |
mrkramps | this is the right channel for support | 20:29 |
purukumi | alright good to know. i am using xubuntu 14.04 LTS and i wanted to ask whether you can see jpg files when your phone is connected to the PC | 20:31 |
mrkramps | depends on how your phone is connected | 20:32 |
purukumi | because always when i want to open a jpg-file on my phone it says that it cannot open it, if i copy it to my desktop, it works.. | 20:32 |
purukumi | it is connected via usb and MTP | 20:32 |
mrkramps | hm, i am not sure if MTP is properly working for direct access | 20:34 |
holstein | you take the file to the computer, and you can easily open and edit jpg's on any linux distro | 20:35 |
holstein | i usually just setup some way of transfering files over a network connection.. | 20:35 |
purukumi | well, i tried some distributions yesterday, like kubuntu, openSUSE and xubuntu - and I think that in kubuntu there was a programm which allowed me a preview of the pictures | 20:36 |
mrkramps | purukumi, are those jpgs in the folder for the cam or somewhere else? | 20:36 |
xubuntu65w | holstein. I tried booting from Grub with the same non results. I suspect that i deleted something that i shouldn't have while customizing before the restart. I think i will just clean it out and start over. wasted day. thanks for the response. Ubuntu user since 2008. | 20:36 |
holstein | xubuntu65w: you tried booting the older kernel? | 20:36 |
purukumi | the jpgs are located in a folder on the phone named "camera" | 20:37 |
holstein | purukumi: cool.. put them on the computer, and look at them.. | 20:37 |
purukumi | holstein you dont understand - i am trying to find a way of not copying everything on the computer the whole time.. | 20:38 |
holstein | purukumi: sure.. then, ask the creator of the phone how they intend you to look at jpegs.. | 20:38 |
holstein | or, you can just have images automatically sync between a few folders, on the phone and computer, to simplify the process | 20:39 |
holstein | xubuntu cant really do anything to make your phone have jpeg support.. | 20:39 |
mrkramps | purukumi, which protocoll is shown in the adress bar of your file manager? | 20:39 |
purukumi | holstein, the pictures that i take with my camera on the phone are saved as jpg's | 20:39 |
purukumi | i can open them on my phone... | 20:40 |
holstein | purukumi: i understand.. and, if the phone is preventing computers from mounting the storage, then, you can have issues mounting the storage. i know, some do | 20:40 |
holstein | what you are asking is, can you just hook your phone up, via USB connnection, and browse the internal storage on the phone, mounted in linux | 20:41 |
mrkramps | holstein, actually he asked something completely different | 20:41 |
purukumi | i can browse the internal storage freely | 20:41 |
holstein | mrkramps: i thought so, as well.. but, i'll jjust let you have at it.. enjoy | 20:42 |
purukumi | i just dont get a PREVIEW OF JPG'S | 20:42 |
purukumi | is this a german support channel? :D | 20:42 |
mrkramps | no, it is not | 20:42 |
mrkramps | purukumi, german support is mainly in #ubuntu-de | 20:42 |
purukumi | okay..would be a bit easier to explain it :P | 20:42 |
holstein | thumbnails* | 20:43 |
holstein | i think that will help ^ | 20:43 |
purukumi | but lets see so, i just connected my phone now i go in thrust and open the internal storage of my phone and access the camera folder where the jpg's are located | 20:43 |
purukumi | and when i open a picture in this folder then it opens "ristretto" (its called i think) | 20:44 |
purukumi | and there is no content in the pictures | 20:44 |
mrkramps | purukumi, did you wait some seconds? | 20:44 |
purukumi | also tried "Fspo" and "Gwenview" | 20:44 |
mrkramps | mtp might be a bit slow | 20:44 |
purukumi | the programm is still open, but nothing seems to happen :/ | 20:45 |
mrkramps | ok, so back to my former question, what is shown in the adress bar of your file manager when opening the mounted folder | 20:46 |
purukumi | mtp://[usb:001,003]/Phone/DCIM/Camera/ | 20:47 |
purukumi | is that what you mean? | 20:47 |
mrkramps | ok, did you already tried to change the phone's connection mode to camera? | 20:47 |
purukumi | so PTP? | 20:47 |
mrkramps | and yes, that's what i wanted to know to be sure it IS using mtp | 20:48 |
mrkramps | yes, PTP | 20:48 |
purukumi | ooomg myyy goooood thank you so much :D | 20:48 |
purukumi | it worked :) | 20:48 |
mrkramps | MTP is mainly for file transfer | 20:48 |
mrkramps | as said before, it might not work properly for direct access | 20:49 |
purukumi | okay so just switching to MTP in order to transer files and PTP for pictures - got it! | 20:49 |
purukumi | thanks very much mrkramps | 20:52 |
mrkramps | you're welcome! | 20:52 |
Replop | so much transfert protocols .... | 20:54 |

puff | My thinkpad t520 seems to semi-randomly go into this mode where the bottom of edge of the picture is below the bottom edge of the screen. It's not that the window needs to be resized, when I maximize the window, the bottom quarter inch or so of the window is off screen. | 22:43 |
puff | Any idea what's causing this, how to fix it, how to prevent it from happening again? | 22:43 |
