willcookeit's dark today, have to have the lights on in the morning :(07:10
willcookeGood news though, we got another community helper closing a few bugs over the weekend07:11
larsumorning willcooke. still sunny here :P07:11
didrockshey willcooke, feeling better?07:12
didrocksyeah, sun and blue sky here ;)07:12
willcooke:'(  I miss the sun07:12
willcookedidrocks, actually no.  I think my eldest son has bought something new home from school.  We all spent the weekend under a blanket watching tv.  Currently debating whether he has to go to school or not.07:13
willcookeInsiders tip:  he does07:13
didrockswillcooke: haha :-)07:15
didrocks:( about family sickness though07:16
* didrocks is still sneezing07:16
seb128hey willcooke07:19
darkxsthey seb128 willcooke didrocks07:20
seb128hey darkxst07:20
darkxstseb128, I was away when you pinged, gjs bug is known, but still don't have a reliable reproducer ;(07:20
seb128darkxst, no worry, I assumed you would read backlog at some point07:21
didrocksevening darkxst07:21
darkxstI'm not to sure about the xorg one, but there were changes with gdm this cycle07:21
darkxstgdm runs on vt7, then login switches to vt2 for the user session (under X only)07:22
seb128k, well I need to investigate07:22
seb128but installing gdm on my wily testbox bricked it07:22
seb128well I can go to a vt, but normals users wouldn't07:22
seb128and it's 1st on e.u.c07:22
darkxstseb128, it uses wayland by default on FOSS drivers07:22
seb128it's an intel laptop07:23
seb128but I don't think I've wayland installed07:23
seb128and the e.u.c error is an abort for "server already running"07:23
seb128I guess an xorg crash as well07:23
seb128get*07:23
darkxstthe e.u.c error is for nvidia drivers, so that would be X07:23
seb128no it's not07:23
seb128the reports are mostly intel based07:24
darkxsthmm07:24
darkxstperhaps a dependency issue that is masked by the ubuntu-gnome seed? though wouldnt have thought there would be many users that manually install gdm07:26
darkxstI have never hit that crash here07:26
seb128I don't think it's manual installs07:26
seb128https://errors.ubuntu.com/oops/77953a20-6b19-11e5-9178-fa163e707a72 for example07:26
darkxstdesktop with NVIDIA blobs, laptop with intel07:26
seb128 Ubuntu-GNOME 15.10 "Wily Werewolf" - Alpha amd64 (20151003)07:26
seb128 Installed on 2015-10-04 (0 days ago)07:26
seb128 Intel Corporation 4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0416] (rev 06) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])07:27
seb128  /usr/bin/X vt2 -displayfd 3 -auth /run/user/1000/gdm/Xauthority -nolisten tcp -background none -noreset -keeptty -verbose 307:27
seb128those errors are all gdm ones with similar commands ^07:27
darkxstvt2 is the user session, not gdm07:27
seb128-auth /run/user/1000/gdm/Xauthority07:27
seb128is what made me tell it's from gdm07:27
seb128but yeah, maybe it's the user session gdm starts07:28
seb128I wonder if that fails to start a new server for some reason07:28
seb128https://launchpadlibrarian.net/219077919/XorgLog.txt is the typical log from those bugs07:30
seb128or https://launchpadlibrarian.net/219073234/XorgLog.txt07:31
seb128[    35.115] _XSERVTransSocketUNIXCreateListener: ...SocketCreateListener() failed07:31
seb128[    35.115] _XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: server already running07:31
seb128but then the log is ongoig, so I wonder if it hits the error and retry and that works or something07:31
seb128if I had to guess I would say it hits most of the Ubuntu GNOME users07:32
darkxstwhere is the rest of the second log?07:32
seb128rest of what?07:32
darkxstoh n/m browser being flaky07:33
darkxstseb128, I've not heard any reports of it, so perhaps it is retrying and succeeding07:34
seb128I guess it is07:35
seb128seeing the number it could be that most users hit it but that it has no real consequence07:35
seb128just creates apport noise07:35
darkxstbut then its first seen in trusty07:36
darkxstthere is no vt switch there07:36
seb128I don't think the e.u.c collector can be trusted07:39
seb128it seems to batch any xserver issue hitting OsAbort()07:39
seb128but looking to a stack of the recent ones, like today's 30 report, most of them atm are Ubuntu GNOME ones with a command similar to the one I copied before07:40
seb128e.g including -auth /run/user/1000/gdm/Xauthority07:40
seb128you can also look at the launchpad report and the recent duplicates07:40
seb128they have the xorg logs07:40
seb128I think the most common issue is new to wily07:41
seb128that's also what the stats on e.u.c suggest07:41
seb128like they are 200 reports on vivid07:41
seb128which are likely random xorg issues07:41
seb128and there are 275 report on the current xorg version in wily, which is not that old07:42
seb128and wily has far less users than vivid, so it means it's more commong07:42
jibelgood morning07:45
darkxstseb128, ok, I will try look into it more this week07:45
seb128thanks07:45
seb128hey jibel07:45
jibelon wily with latest updates applied my session doesn't start, is there a known issue?07:45
seb128no07:46
jibelby doesn't start I only have a background and a mouse pointer07:46
seb128does a guest session works?07:46
jibelseb128, yes guest works07:46
seb128can you provide your ~/.cache/upstart/unity7.log?07:46
jibelseb128, sure, I'll file a bug with all the logs07:46
seb128thanks07:47
seb128though maybe the useful info are in the system journal nowadays07:47
seb128ubuntu-bug unity should do the right thing07:47
jibelseb128, bug 150278707:56
ubot5`bug 1502787 in unity (Ubuntu) "User session doesn't start" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/150278707:56
jibelseb128, another thing, when I restart lightdm, it restart but then the screen is black even ttys are07:56
seb128that's probably something else07:57
seb128could be bug #150194107:57
ubot5`bug 1501941 in xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) "Screen turned off after X server exits" [High,Triaged] https://launchpad.net/bugs/150194107:57
seb128robert_ancell is looking to that one07:57
jibelit sounds like it. thanks07:58
seb128hum07:58
seb128you unity7.log has compiz (core) - Error: Plugin 'composite' not loaded.07:58
* Sweet5hark swipes away a bazillion "unexpected end of stream" errors on launchpad ...07:59
seb128jibel, but guest session works?07:59
jibelseb128, yes it does08:00
seb128hum08:00
seb128hikiko__, Trevinho, andyrock, ^ any idea what could make the composite compiz plugin fail to load for an user (works in guest session so it's not a kernel/driver/xorg issue)08:01
seb128hum08:02
seb128your xorg log has a stacktrace, but it's probably not the issue08:02
seb128(EE) BUG: triggered 'if (axnum >= dev->valuator->numAxes)'08:02
seb128(EE) BUG: ../../Xi/exevents.c:2087 in InitValuatorAxisStruct()08:02

hikikoit seems that the only reason for composite plugin to not load is an abi version change08:08
hikikobut I think we didn't do such changes recently08:08

hikikochecking qlog08:11
hikikolast release was in 20/08/2015 if that was related you ll experience that problem earlier I guess :s08:14
hikikojibel, when did you last upgraded?08:14
jibelseb128, bug 150279608:15
ubot5`bug 1502796 in xserver-xorg-input-evdev (Ubuntu) "Error in x.log: (EE) BUG: triggered 'if (axnum >= dev->valuator->numAxes)' in ../../Xi/exevents.c:2087 in InitValuatorAxisStruct()" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/150279608:15
seb128jibel, thanks08:16
jibelhikiko, yesterday, but it could be Friday, I don't thin I restarted my session after Friday's updates. I'll paste the packages I upgraded08:16
jibelthink*08:16
hikikothanks jibel08:17
jibelhikiko, http://paste.ubuntu.com/12688363/ either 2nd or 408:18
seb128I doubt it's a package issue08:19
hikikoI see, those packages look innocent to me :s08:19
seb128or the guest session wouldn't work either08:19
hikikooh the guest session works?08:19
seb128jibel, can you DISPLAY=:0 strace -f compiz --replace 2>&1>log and share that?08:20
jibelseb128, sure before I do that how do I logout from the command line? currently I've to reboot the machine since I get a black screen if I restart lightdm08:22
seb128jibel, can you try to install the deb from robert_ancell ppa to see if it fixes your issue?08:23
seb128jibel, otherwise kill -9 `pidof gnome-session` I guess :p08:23
jibelokay08:23
jibelseb128, robert's patched version of the driver works.08:30
seb128jibel, great08:31

Laneymy apps lens is in a state where it's giving no results08:38
Laneyexciting08:38
Laneyusually it just does this for one search08:38
hikikothank you jibel08:38
hikikoseb128 and jibel what's "the patched version of the driver"? maybe we should write the solution in this bug report?08:41
seb128hikiko, that's a different issue, restarting lightdm leading to blank screen, there is already a bug with the solution written and a ppa build08:44
seb128jibel, can you try to move ~/.compiz-1/plugins away and if that doesn't work then ~/.cache/compizconfig-108:47
hikikoseb128, do you have the bug number? Someone else complained yesterday in GRNet that he can't start unity on wily and I thought it's his setup because I've never experienced that issue myself :/08:47
seb128hikiko, #150194108:47
seb128hikiko, but what you describe seems different, that one is happening when xserver exit08:47
seb128so if you restart lightdm for example08:47
hikikoit's not xserver08:47
hikikohe can start other DE08:48
hikikoor is it?08:48
seb128sorry I got confused08:49
seb128jibel has 2 issues08:49
seb128one is that his session fails to load the unity plugin08:49
seb128the other is that xorg get messed up on server restarts, like if he restarts lightdm08:49
hikikothe guy I talked to yesterday had the 1st one08:49
LaneyTrevinho: when you're around, got a bustle log for apps lens not working... if you want it :)08:49
hikikohe couldn't load the unity plugin08:50
larsuSweet5hark: explain!08:55
Sweet5harklarsu: oh, these people having downloaded incomplete/corrupted *.debs and then getting shouted at by apt about it.08:57
Sweet5harklarsu: maybe happens more often with libreoffice because of bigger packages.08:57
Sweet5harklarsu: bug 1173847 is an example.09:00
ubot5`bug 1173847 in libreoffice (Ubuntu) "package libreoffice-style-human 1:3.6.2~rc2-0ubuntu4 failed to install/upgrade: cannot copy extracted data for './usr/share/libreoffice/share/config/images_human.zip' to '/usr/share/libreoffice/share/config/images_human.zip.dpkg-new': unexpected end of file or stream" [Undecided,Invalid] https://launchpad.net/bugs/117384709:00

jibelseb128, there was no ~/.compiz-1/plugins , I tried to move away other compiz config and plugins files and it didn't fix anything09:11

larsuah, sorry. I'm late to the discussion it seems09:13
seb128jibel, you can try to dconf reset -f /org/compiz09:14
jibelseb128, can I save the state before I do that to keep a trace of the broken configuration? if it either fix it09:15
didrocksjibel: dconf dump /09:15

mvoseb128: uhh, thanks09:19
seb128jibel, :-(09:19

seb128hey andyrock09:23
larsuandyrock: I think jibel could use your help ;)09:23
jibelseb128, ah removing .cache/compizconfig-1 entirely /fixed/ it09:24
* andyrock is reading the log09:24
seb128jibel, I guess some corruption in the cache then :-/09:24
seb128mvo, do you think we should have any concern about the performances? I think back then you resolved the issue by making the code return early on an error and that the flag effect didn't get really tested then09:25
jibelseb128, maybe. I removed almost everything with compiz in the name and did a reset09:25
mvoseb128: I think there is no concern about peformance this change should actually make it faster09:27
mvoseb128: iirc there is a --measure switch in s-c so we could even test it :)09:27
seb128mvo, well, basically currently it was not writting the db at all since it was hitting an exception on the open09:27
mvoseb128: yeah :(09:27
seb128so I doubt it makes it faster09:27
seb128work is going to be slower that no work09:27
seb128but let's see09:27
seb128mvo, thanks09:28
jibelmeh, and now I've no sound at all :((09:28
seb128jibel, it's your day it seems...09:28
jibelrelease in 2 weeks, right?09:28
mvoseb128: I mean, it will later be faster when it can use the db instead of having to refetch stuff, but I would have to look at the surrounding code to see if that is actually true or not09:28
seb128mvo, let's try and see ;-)09:29
TrevinhoLaney: Oh thanks, can you email me?09:29
seb128nothing like real world testing!09:29

TrevinhoYeah, quite busy as always, but at least my team is now leading the Serie A :-)09:40
Laneynice!09:44
TrevinhoI was reading the jibel issue, but I don't think it can be much compiz settings related, as composite is one of her first plugins to load, and   if it fails is generally because of something wrong at driver level. Although it also might be that it has been disabled for some reason (check the enabled plugin list on dconf)09:44
TrevinhoYeah, 17 years later... :-)09:44
LaneyTrevinho: ah I found that I have infact already filed it ;-)09:55

Trevinhoseb128: if we can get the scrollbars there ok, otherwise I have other fixes proposed plus some other in works12:32
seb128Trevinho, what's the status of the scrollbars? feel a bit late for such changes...12:32
TrevinhoI should propose it later today, it's not a big change in terms of functionality (those have already landed), so there shouldn't be any breakage, it's mostly UI (only visible on mouse hovering), but as you guys prefer12:33
Trevinhoit can be on X12:34
Trevinhoubuntu X feels like a secret project, BTW :)12:34
seb128well, you can do the ffe and see what they say12:35
seb128if it's not then it's ready to land early next cycle12:35
Trevinhoyeah...12:35
* Trevinho hates that the lander doesn't set the upstream project bugs related to a MP as Fix Committed while merging...12:37
willcookeTrevinho, you have a script to fix that right?  Can we just cron job it?12:37
Trevinhowillcooke: I have one, but it requires still bug numbers, and it should figure that from MPs.... I could fix it, but it's still annoying as having the ci-train to do it was somewhat expected to me (as it happened in the past, when we add the auto-lander)12:38
Trevinhodidrocks: maybe you happen to know why this changed? ^12:38
didrocksTrevinho: I didn't touch CI Train code for a year and half now. So you should rather ask robru directly about it.12:39
Trevinhodidrocks: ok thanks12:39
didrocksbut yeah, I don't see any reason why it doesn't do this anymore12:39
seb128bugs would get autoclosed on upload if you used the ubuntu source for bugs12:39
didrocksseb128: not the upstream task12:39
TrevinhoI mean, I didn't know whether it was a policy, or a thought choice, or just a missing feature12:39
didrocksor will it?12:39
seb128didrocks, my "if you used the ubuntu source" was meant as "if you standardized on using one bug list, that list being the ubuntu source"12:40
seb128like we do for most projects12:40
Trevinhothe only reason I'd see that it could cause problem is when you merge to non-trunk branches, but i guess that it could be figured12:40
didrocksseb128: ah, got you now12:40
seb128:-)12:40
didrocksso yeah ;)12:40
seb128I still think unity should do that12:40
seb128though there is quite some backlog and doing the change would be noisy12:41
didrocksTrevinho: well, my code was try: except: ;)12:41
Trevinho:)12:41
didrockswillcooke: "The upstream project being the main one." -> you mean you want the upstream project to be the main one?12:50
didrockswillcooke: there is only one thing which is for sure: you can't remove package bugs. Those are the new tracked when a bug is fixed in distro, and also the one reported against when people run "ubuntu-bug" or use apport12:51
willcookeok, so just make the package one then main source then?12:52
didrocksthat's the option if you only want one bug list12:52

tseliotseb128: I haven't tested this yet but I think these changes should solve the problem with apport/xdiagnose: http://paste.ubuntu.com/12689718/14:24
seb128tseliot, good. do you have upload rights for that?14:24
seb128or maybe tjaalton can help you14:24
tseliotseb128: I'm a core-dev. Unless there are any other upload rights that I need14:25
seb128tseliot, no, so feel free to upload, the changes make sense to me14:25
tseliotseb128: ok, good :)14:26
seb128Laney, I guess you plan to upload your telepathy-glib buildfix to debian and sync it over?14:43
LaneyI will handle it one way or another14:44
* Trevinho goes to pay the car repair shop...14:47

larsuclearly that wasn't a threat but I heard Laney sing this song when he wrote "I will handle it one way or another"15:10

seb128yeah, but last time the plugin failed to load due a missing symbol15:15
seb128that seems to be a different one15:15

Laneybut yeah not this time15:15
seb128no such issue there15:17

Laneywe should do a new release of software-center16:03
Sweet5harkseb128: are you ok with me jsut throwing a debdiff at you for sponsoring?16:03
Laneydebian patching it feels weird16:03
seb128Sweet5hark, yes16:03
Sweet5harkseb128: diff is only 34 lines16:03
seb128Laney, we would need to get those fixes in trunk first16:03
Laneyya16:04
seb128Sweet5hark, that's more than the current Makefile ;-)16:04
seb128Laney, dobey wants to make s-c compatible with CI landing, he just didn't get to do yet16:04
Laneyor get it set up for the train I guess16:04

Sweet5harkwell, its mostly boilerplate -- adding debian/patches/series and a patch ...16:04
Sweet5harkseb128: http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=n34GdbAD16:07
seb128Sweet5hark, I doubt that fix it16:07
seb128-f already does the "don't error out"16:08
Sweet5harkseb128: isnt that "-r" ?16:08
seb128no16:08
seb128well, dunno16:08
seb128but the build fails on l1116:08
seb128include $(SRCDIR)config.mk16:08
seb128which doesn't exist16:08
seb128not on the clean16:08
seb128well, no on the rm I mean16:09
seb128did you try your fix?16:09
seb128(I didn't yet, but I've a feeling it's not going to work)16:09
Laney-include... probably16:09
didrocksand with that Xorg crash, time to EOD! :p16:09
Laneybye didrocks!16:09
seb128didrocks, bye16:09
didrockssee you guys16:09
seb128I wonder how it worked before though16:10
seb128that include should have failed back then16:10
Sweet5harkseb128: I did try, but not from a scratch directory ... which, given that we talk about "clean", might be a good idea ...16:10
Sweet5harkseb128: retrying from scratch ...16:10
seb128Sweet5hark, k16:10
Sweet5harkseb128: http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=KAurw1mb <- this should be better16:26
seb128Sweet5hark, so previous one didn't work? ;-)16:27
seb128Sweet5hark, just adding a - before the include as Laney suggested is not enough?16:28
seb128seems to work here16:28
Laneythat means it's optional to include the file16:29
Sweet5harkseb128: heh, well, it worked here as I had a config.mk already. but it didnt once I rm-rf'ed the builddir and redid the dpkg-buildpackage16:29
seb128weird, what error did you get?16:29
Sweet5harkseb128: I got the line 11 one as on launchpad. no surprise there.16:30
seb128with the "-"?16:30
seb128that's weird16:30
seb128as Laney said, it makes it optional so it shouldn't error out16:31
seb128and that indeed makes it stop erroring out for me16:31
Sweet5harkah, no. I didnt try the "-include". it would likely work.16:31
seb128Sweet5hark, that's weird because the line in your diff has a "-"16:32
seb128+-include $(SRCDIR)config.mk16:32
Sweet5harkit would likely do weird stuff if you do "make" before "./configure" though: no config.mk but still trying stuff that uses vars from it.16:32
seb128oh, urg16:32
seb128sorry, wrong diff reading ;-)16:32
Sweet5harkseb128: hehe16:33
seb128k16:33
seb128so should I upload your version?16:33
Sweet5harkseb128: please upload that version.16:33

sakHello guys. I have an idea for a feature I would like to ubuntu desktop UI and for other flavors of ubuntu. Can there be a search feature that allows a user to search for installed applications by typing in an application category? What I mean by this, in most ubuntu OSes, the application menu is organized into categories. In each category, are a list of related applications or programs. Some search features allow the user to search applications using key22:56
sakswords. Well instead of using keywords to represent applications, why not use application category keywords and then get a list of all related applications. Within that, then user can narrow down the search by putting in keywords for the apps that they want.22:56
sarnoldsak: you might be able to put it together with the 'dmenu' tool from suckless-tools22:58
Trevinhonight turn time :P23:28
