pablenqueHi folks, good night00:21
pablenqueI must say that ive never used linux, and im looking for some hints about mi hardware and whats more convenient for it00:22
Finetundarevening pablenque00:22
FinetundarAsk and I will try to answer00:23
pablenquewell, i have a Hp dv6 series, and need to erase the recovery partitions in order to make space for linux partition, and i dont have the experience reading that much about it00:25
Finetundaryou're gonna have to open up gparted and erase the partitions00:25
pablenqueso i thought that kubuntu may be a choice for it00:25
Finetundarpablenque: you can either run the installer and have it erase the HDD or manually erase it from gparted00:27
pablenqueok, you think that the drivers of the actual releases of ubuntu-kubuntu may cover the hardware of sucha a block laptop of mine?00:27
FinetundarHow old is it?00:27
Finetundarpablenque: depending on the age of the computer you may want/need to use a lighter flavour00:28
pablenquei think that is around 5-7 years old00:29
Finetundarpablenque: do you know the specs?00:30
pablenquewell Finetundar what i know of this machine is that has a amd dual core 2.3gh and 4GB00:30
pablenqueof ram,00:30
pablenquesorry, is amd turion00:31
pablenquevideo comes from ati00:31
pablenquethe ati mobilityu radeon 420000:32
FinetundarWell, alright, you have the specs to run kubuntu pretty well. The issue you may encounter is attery life. What's been the average battey life?00:32
pablenquei know that atheros is for the wireless adapter00:33
* Finetundar cringes00:33
FinetundarAnd there's where you're probably gonna have problems00:33
pablenqueoh, the battery, it never lasted for too long, and now i gave up , using just the power cord00:34
pablenquethe heat that comes out of this laptop ruined to many batteries00:34
Finetundarpablenque: If I were you I'd go ask in #ubuntu about the atheros drivers. For the rest, if you don't plan on using battery life then kubuntu will be a great choice00:35
FinetundarThe installer will give you an option to completly erase the HDD and install kubuntu or you can install alongside windows00:36
pablenquegreat, i will ask there then, hope there was drivers for it, (sorry my english)00:36
pablenqueim planing to erase all , then making a partition for windows, for installing some soft of my work00:37
Finetundarpablenque: I'd advise you to install windows first then00:37
Finetundarit doesn't tend to agree with the boot loader provided by *buntu operating systems00:38
pablenquebecause of so many crashes of the msoft SO00:38
pablenquei continuosly have to format my pc00:38
pablenqueah, so its better that way, ok i will learn hot to do it00:39
FinetundarVery easy really00:40
pablenquegreat then, ill give it a try,00:41
pablenquei like to lear that kind of things, but this computer is for use of other people in this house too,00:42
pablenquei guess i will risk my head a little bit for a change,00:42
pablenquethanks Finetundar, i will ask for that atheros driver issues as you told me00:43
Finetundarpablenque: kubuntu is really  easy to use !00:44
pablenquei have read that it is indeed, im just a little rusty00:46
pablenquegood night Finetundar, and thanks again for the tips00:48
Finetundarpablenque: come back if you have any questions at all friend00:48
pablenqueof course i will have to come back here a lot, im a noob now!!!00:49

est31I am wondering about the future of kubuntu or KDE + ubuntu. I've heard that there has been some trouble, and that 15.10 might be the last release?01:27
est31will 16.04 be released, is it a "stable" choice for the longer term?01:27
Finetundardunno man, last I heard of that maddness was sowards march I think01:28

uofm49426is there a classic kde desktop option without plasma running02:16
uofm49426plasma keep crashing on me02:17
freeroutehi02:33
freerouteI want to try out 15.10 once it comes out. Do you guys recommend me that or should I wait a couple of days before the kinks are ironed out?02:34
freeroute(in theory the FinalRelease should be stable, but you know, just to be sure)02:34
abrahamsWhether you update on day 1 or wait for a few weeks after that you will still receive bugfix updates from time to time02:36
abrahamsIf you are excited to update no great reason to wait, really02:37
geniifreeroute: Might want to check https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WilyWerewolf/ReleaseNotes#Known_issues and see if you can live with the current known problems02:37
freerouteabrahams: though historically, a period after launch is accompanied with a bigger amount of patches and regressions right?02:39
abrahams freeroute: more bug reports sure, but the heaviest update/patching work is done before the release, not after it02:41
freerouteah I see, so right now is a busy period I reckon :)02:43
freeroutegenii: thanks I'll check this out. From what I'm seeing this affects all of Ubuntu flavors. To view Kubuntu-specific issues, I should keep an eye on this page, right? https://wiki.kubuntu.org/WilyWerewolf/Alpha1/Kubuntu02:43
freerouteman I can not wait for Plasma 5 :D02:45
geniifreeroute: There's probably another page also, but at least there, yes02:45
freerouteit's going to be my first "real" experience with KDE. I intend to use it as my main system.02:46
freerouteI saw some youtube videos and it looked fantastic.02:46
geniifreeroute: http://www.kubuntu.org/news/  is probably a better jumping-off point. for instance right now the Beta2 link from there has a Release Notes specific to that one.02:49
geniifreeroute: And when final freeze and release are finished, links and notes will also be available from there02:49
josu_Hello, I need some help with Konversation.  When I log into #kubuntu with my most-preferred nickname "josu", it comes up with "Nickname already in use. Trying josu_."02:50
freeroutethanks, I'll be checking those out :)02:50
josu_And there is no-one else named Josu in the list. So, why does the channel think there is?02:51
est31josu_, there is one called josu on the network02:52
est31that is already enough02:52
est31they just aren't on the #kubuntu channel02:52
josu_est31: Hmm... I can't see it. Maybe a bug with Konversation?02:53
est31josu_, no, its a general property of the irc network02:53
abrahamsjosu_: you would see it if you tried to type /msg josu, you could start a conversation with the original josu02:54
geniijosu_:  /msg NickServ INFO josu      will tell you about the name. Likely it's registered to another user which is active02:54
est31best you find another nick, and then register it with nickserv02:54
josu_Kind of confusing... This is my first experience with IRC. Do I need to create an account or something?02:55
abrahamshttps://freenode.net/faq.shtml02:56

kamil_hey guys, i have a problem10:49
kamil_and it is urgent10:49
kamil_i tried to resize my partition and move it toleft (i had about 200gb of free space at the left), but i got error, and now i have 200gb of free space and RAW partition10:50
kamil_what can i do?10:50
philipp_I want KWallet to prompt me to unlock right after login. How can I do this?11:29
alvinkamil_: sounds bad. Did you actually move the data yet?11:39
alvinphilipp_: I guess you can set kwallet to autostart11:39
alvinphilipp_: Keep in mind that autostart is pretty bugged in 15.04. It works, but you can't change settings afterwards, unless you change the .desktop files themselves.11:40
kamil_alvin: unfortunately no, i hve done resizing a lot of time, never had problems11:40
alvinThis is fixed in 15.10 beta211:40
philipp_thx alvin11:40
kamil_now i am checking disk with destdisk, it looks like partition is stil visible, but has corrupted fs11:41
alvinkamil_: In that case you lost the data. If this was before the resize, changing the partition table to what you had would have made it accesible again. But now?11:41
alvinphilipp_: kwallet will open automatically when you use the same password as login (if I'm not mistaken here)11:41
kamil_alvin: but partition is not resized, sizes are same, just it looks like it is not formatted11:42
alvinYes, but you moved it physically11:42
kamil_fck, and maybe some programs to restore data (such as recuva?)11:42
alvinI'm sure those might work, but I would use the backup at this point11:43
alvinDepends on the filesystem too. You need 2 things now. Detecting where the filesystem starts en ends, and then the recovery.11:43
alvinMaybe the first is enough, but I wouldn't bet on it.11:44

jackdinnhi, im stuck and need some help , sys info (kubuntu 15.04, i7uPro, 16 G ram nvidia gtx770) my windows decorator keeps make a mess of my titles bars , blurry text , parts of the title bar missing & sometime the whole bar missing all together. Hoever when i try to change the setting it just crashes when i click on windows decorations http://i.imgur.com/74jmKgA.png15:13

jackdinnbackports ? no not on this installation15:15
lordievaderjackdinn: I'd upgrade to backports if I were you to see if that fixes the problems you are having.15:15
lordievaderhttps://launchpad.net/~kubuntu-ppa/+archive/ubuntu/backports15:16
jackdinnbtw this insstallation of kubuntu is brand new , only 2 days old now15:16
jackdinnk thx lordievader, i shall try that15:16
jackdinnso what exactly is the backports ? i might as well ask since its taking ages to upgrade all the files/packages15:27
jackdinni thought it was just all the updates that came after the distro your on, so for kubuntu 15.04 it would be all the 15.10 file/package updates ?15:29
jackdinnor am i completely wrong :-/15:30
geniijackdinn: Backports are packages which first appeared in a later release and have since been also made to work with an earlier release15:30
jackdinnhmm so kinda what i was thinking then15:30
jackdinnjust that they have been tested to be backwards compatible15:31

jackdinnwhere is it16:01

jackdinnsorry , double post , my bad16:42
jackdinnwell what then , how can i get 352.41 without the ppa or DL'ing it ?16:43
BluesKajyou could use the xedgers, but don't upgrade any kernels until the same driver is available in the regular repos16:43
jackdinni dont know what that means , lol16:44
BluesKajxedgers offers a driver that isn't avilable in the regular repositories or the driver manager ''16:45
jackdinnso what am i doing ? i DL'ed the driver from nvidia http://www.nvidia.co.uk/content/DriverDownload-March2009/confirmation.php?url=/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/352.41/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-352.41.run&lang=uk&type=GeForce16:46
jackdinnbut its a NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-352.41.run file16:47
BluesKajfor kubuntu that is, and xedgers does test their drivers to make sure they work , buit they just don't upgrade them as often as the Kubuntu repositories does, simple as that16:47
jackdinnhow do i use this *.run file that iv just got from nvidia?16:47
BluesKajjackdinn: don't use that driver, you're better off using the xedgers driver16:48

BluesKajjackdinn:  changing distros isn't going to make erros and problems go away, stick with one until it works for you and don't try to change too many settings at one time.17:06
jackdinnk thats good logic, but i have had such a hard time17:07

jackdinnBluesKaj:  so should all them other software sources be ticked ?17:08
BluesKajcheck every box in the sources list except the cdrom one then update and upgrade17:08
jackdinnThe following packages have unmet dependencies.17:12
jackdinn kwin : Depends: kwin-x11 but it is not installed17:12
BluesKajinstall kwinx-1117:12
jackdinnBluesKaj: k just do a restart , cheers17:14
BluesKajif that doesn't work open a terminal and run sudo dpkg --configure -a, then sudo apt-get -f install17:15
lordievaderPerhaps first check why it doesn't want to install kwin-x11.17:15
BluesKajhe left17:16
siervois there a default root password or repository I need to setup to download Konqueror or rekonq on Kubuntu? Just installed17:16
BluesKajsiervo:  are you on a phone?17:16
lordievaderBluesKaj: It was addressed to you to ;)17:17
BluesKajlordievader:  dependencies17:17
lordievaderSure, but why are they unmet. That is the real question.17:18
BluesKajwe always wonder why they're unmet :-) ...but it seems installing kwn-x11 install worked17:19
BluesKajhe didn't have all his repos enabled either17:20

BluesKajsidid you try the commands I posted? open a terminal and run sudo dpkg --configure -a, then sudo apt-get -f install17:22
BluesKajjackdinn: ^17:23
lordievaderjackdinn: Is kwin-x11 installed?17:23
jackdinnk np i shall give it a go17:23
jackdinnyea i did install it17:23
jackdinn0 to upgrade, 0 to newly install, 0 to remove and 0 not to upgrade.17:24
BluesKajjackdinn:  also make sure you have kubuntu-restricted-extras installed17:30
jackdinnk, no harm17:31
jackdinnBluesKaj: done lots of stuff being installed/updated but still same unfortunately17:34
BluesKajjackdinn:  those aren't meant to fix your problem, but they do indtsll flash and java plugins etc that help with bowsing websites and playing media files that require plugins for codecs etc17:39
whlai_jello all17:40
whlai_how do you reverse a zone with a  /16 subnet?17:40
whlai_server is 10.1.1.97, sub is 255.255.0.017:41
whlai_need a reverse zone for BIND9 config in named.conf.local17:41
BluesKajwhlai_:  looks like a question for ##networking17:44
lordievaderOr for #ubuntu-server17:44
lordievaderjackdinn: Could you give a summary of the problem? (Im to lazy to read the backlog)17:45
jackdinnlordievader: thx for the offer but im just about to eat so will be away for a while, appreciated though17:46

aphixehello guys, just curious i didn't make a swap file because i have 8gb, but then i read a conflict about laptops needing swap partition for sleep. also thought i saw you can just make a swap file.?20:14
JosuGaphixe: You need a swap partition if you are going to enable hibernation. If you are not going to enable hibernation, you can use a swap file.20:17
bpromptditto20:18
aphixeJosuG:  so.. can i shrink root / partition to fit swap partition. also what is a swap file for. sleep with battery holding memory in a file?20:19
=== gb_ is now known as Guest29766
JosuGaphixe: Keep in mind though that hibernation may not work correctly on all computers.  "Suspend to RAM" or "Sleep" is different than "Suspend to disk" or "Hibernate" and does not use swap at all.20:19
JosuGaphixe: So you do not need swap for sleep.20:20
aphixeJosuG: well i know one saves to disk and other saves to ram while using small bit of battery20:20
JosuGaphixe: Correct. Hibernate saves to disk, and sleep saves to ram.20:20
bpromptaphixe:    the swap partition is needed for hibernation, to store the session state for reloading at boot, hibernation is not sleep, sleep is simply an energy saving state while activity is low or none20:21
aphixeJosuG: i guess its trial and error to know if hibernate is supported on my laptop. and if so i need to some how shrink my partition for swap20:21
=== ariel is now known as Guest18429
aphixebprompt: ok so can say gparted shrink partition and then i add what size of swap. i don't want to use up too much. also gparted i assume has to be ran on a live usb because system disk is in use20:23
bpromptaphixe:    well... if  you were referring all along about sleep mode, you don't need it, if you meant hibernation, then you do, as JosuG  correctly pointed out, but if you meant sleep mode, with 8gbs ram, depending on usage, you may not need the swap partition/file20:24
JosuGaphixe: To enable a swap partition: http://askubuntu.com/questions/33697/how-do-i-add-a-swap-partition-after-system-installation20:25
aphixebprompt: isn't the benefit of hibernation to quickly boot up and to turn off hardware to save battery20:26
bpromptaphixe:   but, yes, I'd do it from a liveusb session20:26
JosuGAnd then, to test hibernation type the command "sudo pm-hibernate"20:26
bpromptaphixe:    ahemm, nope, the idea behind hibernation, is that the "shutdown state" is kept, and you can resume whatever you were doing and pick up where you left off after booting up, all apps and files that were open, will just pick up where they left off, that's the saving of hibernation20:27
bpromptaphixe:   if you just need the system, when the activity is low or none, to save energy by turning off hardware and processes no needed, then that'd be sleep mode, and for that, you don't need a swap partition/file20:29
DeaDSouLhi, is there any way possible to make the inporting tool in digikam uses all cores ?20:29
bpromptDeaDSouL:    dunno myself, I don't use digikam, I use gwenview20:31
bpromptDeaDSouL:    importing couldn't take that long anyhow, unless you're digitizing the congress library =)20:32
DeaDSouLbprompt: i need to use digikam to add tags, and faces contacts...20:32
DeaDSouLbprompt: well, try to import 51,000 images... and then tell me how long did you wait ;)20:33
bprompt51,000 images? holy molly, why not just make them an mp4 :P20:33
DeaDSouLbprompt: lol,,... so many duplicated images... ;P i need digikam to make it easier find them and delete the duplicates :D20:36
DeaDSouLto find *20:36
bprompthmm.... hmm.... haven't needed to use it myself20:38
JosuGI looked at the docs at https://docs.kde.org/trunk4/en/extragear-graphics/digikam/digikam.pdf.  I couldnt find anything about cores or performance.20:43
JosuGI used the Find in Page feature to look for "cores" and all I could find was the word "underscores" lol :P20:44
* bprompt underscores that20:45
JosuGBy the way, did anyone notice a whole bunch of people log out all at once?20:45
bpromptI have log in/out off =), thus nope20:47
bpromptbut if so, that explains a few things, traffic is a bit low, the many "log out at once", simply means a netsplit, thus20:48
JosuGHmm... I just started using IRC a few days ago and I guess I just don't know lots of stuff about how it works.20:49
=== Pizza is now known as Guest5193

bpromptJosuG:    netsplit means, one network, many servers logged into it, say, you may be on a swedish server, logged to freenode.net, and some say other 20 folks may be on a australian server, logged to freenode.net network, both in the same network, BUT, if the australian server gets a downtime for some reason, you'll notice 20 folks "logging out" per se20:53
JosuGbprompt: Ok that makes sense. Thanks.20:54
bpromptanyhow, but netsplits are often more than just one server, sometimes could be say 5 or 3 servers getting some downtime for some reason, updating or testing or other server issue, and when that happens, you'll notice about 100 or 1000 folks/nicks logging out per se, due to the netsplit20:54
bpromptand when the servers come and log back in the network, you'd see about 100 or 1000 nicks logging in at once also =)20:55
JosuGYep, I noticed that, too.20:55
JosuGAnd now I turned off the login/logout messages. What a waste of space in the chat window.20:56
bpromptwell, they could be useful, I mean, you wouldn't know about the netsplit unless you saw that flag :)20:57
bpromptI usually have them ON btw, just now and then I have them off20:57
JosuGI'll keep that in mind.20:58
bpromptalso you can tell who just came in, or left, and that's also useful, we have sometime dry-by's, folks may ask something, and leave a few seconds later, you may reply and he/she's gone20:59
bpromptJosuG:    http://irc.netsplit.de/channels/?net=freenode   <---- btw, if you want to check out other channels, or other networks21:07
mparillo_Sometimes I answer the drive-bys anyway in case somebody is checking the logs (http://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2015/)21:45
