rakesh123TJ-:  right , can i put that in boot arguments ?01:50

TJ-rakesh123: that's because we've crashed and other services haven't started in time01:52
rakesh123TJ-:  okay , so i disable the backlight serivcee in boot arguments ?01:53
wileeeubernoob, using 3rd party apps just makes it harder, grub will do most of what they do.01:53
TJ-rakesh123: do you see the Backlight.slice name there?01:53
rakesh123TJ-:  in the logs you mean ?01:53
TJ-rakesh123: no, you disable it now - from this shell - once you've identified the correct unit name01:53
TJ-rakesh123: try identifying it with "systemctl list-units | grep Backlight"01:53
rakesh123TJ-: okay01:54
TJ-rakesh123: if you see something very similar to 'Backlight.slice' as a name, that'll be the one you need to disable. The naming may not be exact01:54
ubernoobwileee: how do i remove unwanted menu entries then?01:54
TJ-rakesh123: assuming you do see the name, use "systemctl disable <name>"01:54
wileeeubernoob, like what?01:55
rakesh123TJ-:  when I do a grep of Backlight , I can't see any line01:55

wileeeubernoob, grub is a key area for lots of things so it has uses you will need.01:56
wafflejockg4rrucho: should be able to just, sudo apt-get install samba, in a terminal and be good to go01:56

ubernoobwileee: not really, just one of them that my wife uses. so I dual boot. Just want to remove the ones for recovery and safe mode and memtest and those02:01
wileeeubernoob, Basically burg nor the customizer are supported here, I'm trying to make sure you have an ease of travel if possible.02:01
TJ-rakesh123: "journalctl" and then press G to jump to the end of the log, and work backwards from there02:01
rakesh123TJ-:  okay , only the ones in the red are the errors right ?02:01
wileeeubernoob, safe mode removal is a bad idea is all, not sure on the recovery, the mem test is easy.02:01

wileeeTJ-, Heh, no idea, I just happened to log in to update, I'm not familiar at all with these processes.02:49

TheHackOpsJust wondering if there is anyone with a good amount of experience in installing the AMD ATI proprietary drivers06:43
TheHackOpsEvery time I install them my display stops working06:43
TheHackOpsand I have to drop to a root shell and run sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx-*06:43
TheHackOpsI am running an XFX R9 280x, And I am trying to play CS:GO which is a native Steam game06:44
TheHackOpsIt works fine in terms of FPS but the fragment shaders bug out a lot06:44
baizonTheHackOps: yes its a little bit tricky06:45
TheHackOpsAgree06:45
havingtroubleCan someone help me with the WiFi? My WiFi chip is intel Pro/wireless 3945 and i am on ubuntu 15.04. All updates installed. The wifi hardware switch is on but ubuntu says wifi is off by hardware switch! Help!06:45
TheHackOpsbaizon, I am thinking I should just go for nVidia as people seem to have a lot less issues with it06:45
baizonTheHackOps: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/AMD06:46
baizonTheHackOps: im using an 270x, and have no problems at all06:46

TheHackOpsbaizon, Are you using the AMD ATI drivers06:46
TheHackOpsFPS is fine actually06:46
TheHackOpsIts that the game bugs out graphically a lot06:46
baizonTheHackOps: but its the game devs fault :(06:47
TheHackOpsNot rly06:47
baizonTheHackOps: cs:go is buggy :(06:47
TheHackOpsI am not convinced until I try everything06:47
baizoni mean that is bad coding, when you open the scoreboard and lose 30fps06:47
TheHackOpsbaizon, Not if you're relying on calls to the GPu that the driver does better06:48
baizonTheHackOps: yes that is true ofc06:48
havingtroubleWifi trouble here!?06:48
TheHackOpsI'm from the world of graphics programming but not on nix06:48

TheHackOpswhy my xorg server would not start06:54

TheHackOpsWeird06:56
TheHackOpsI dont get that06:56
TheHackOpsJust flickering06:56
baizonmokmeister: well this is also a cs:go bug, it also happens under windows06:56

xStarkIf I wanna upgrade to a newer version of Ubuntu, I boot from live cd and use gparted to delete linux partitions. Do I have to format the partitions or nah06:58
Ben64xStark: you could do an upgrade from within ubuntu, or you could format and install fresh, whatever you want really06:59
xStarkBen64: I dont wanna upgrade, I wanna clean install. To clean install, you can just boot from a live cd and delete linux partiitions and install new ubuntu. The question is, do I need to format the deleted linux partitions?07:00
baizonxStark: you can format without deleting the partitions07:01
Ben64xStark: you can't format a deleted partition, it is deleted07:01
TheHackOpsbaizon, Whats weird is I dont have an xorg config07:02
xStarkBen64: The deleted space will remain as "Unallocated space" and you can format it.07:02
baizonTheHackOps: you need to aticonfig -init to create a xorg config, or else fglrx wont work07:02
xStarkBen64 and baizon: I'm referring to this guide https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/upgrade07:02
Ben64you can't format unallocated space07:02
TheHackOpsbaizon, I know but it says to back up the open source one07:02
TheHackOpsI dont have one07:02
TheHackOpsis that normal07:03
baizonTheHackOps: yes, that is normal07:03
TheHackOpsbaizon, Can you feel my noobness?07:03

baizonthis howto*07:06
xStarkbaizon: To clean install a new version of ubuntu.07:06
Ben645. I advise against creating a separate home partition.07:06
xStarkNot upgrade.07:06
Ben64yeah, i wouldn't listen to the site07:06
Ben64separate home is good07:06
baizonxStark: you dont need to delete everything, just format the partitions07:07
TheHackOpsbaizon, Ok I am installing fglrx07:07
TheHackOpsDid you also install the hardware accel stuff07:07
baizonBen64: yeah, i have a /home on a seperate partition so i dont lose everything ive configured :/07:07
xStarkbaizon: Just go to windows and format the partitions, boot from live cd and install Ubuntu?07:07
baizonTheHackOps: yeah07:08
TheHackOpsok07:08
Ben64xStark: do it from the ubuntu installer... you're making it way harder than it needs to be07:08
TheHackOpsbaizon, If this works07:08

metronomo90thank you! So this is my problem: I'm running Ubuntu 15.04 and my laptop has an integrated Video Card (Intel) and a dedicated one (ATI R7 M265). If I use the default drivers configuration, animations and everything works very smoothly, but I don't have any kind of hardware accelleration (for example when I open a flash video my CPU goes 50% or higher)09:31
lotuspsychjemetronomo90: did you install ubuntu-restricted-extras?09:32
metronomo90I've tried to install fglrx, fglrx-updates and also drivers directly from ATI website, but what I get is just an incredibly slugghish system. So I went back do the default driver09:32
lotuspsychjemetronomo90: work with driver that performs best on your system09:33
metronomo90yes lotuspsychje, but, for example all animations were super slow09:33
lotuspsychjemetronomo90: if radeon driver works good now, use that?09:34
metronomo90when you say "radeon driver" do you mean the default ubuntu one?09:35
bekksmetronomo90: There is only one driver called radeon.09:35
lotuspsychjemetronomo90: check yours with sudo lshw -C video09:35
lotuspsychjemetronomo90: after driver=09:35
=== Dr3amc0d3r|away is now known as Dr3amc0d3r
metronomo90the result of your command is telling me that I'm just using the integrated card (Intel). Driver in use is i91509:36
lotuspsychjemetronomo90: so your system uses the onboard intel graphics then09:37
lotuspsychjemetronomo90: check bios if you can switch to your ati09:38
lotuspsychjemetronomo90: or maybe check your syslog and dmesg to see why radeon driver doesnt load09:39
lotuspsychjemetronomo90: also keep in mind that LTS can perform better for your system09:39
metronomo90I think that Ubuntu "sees" the dedicated card: it presents me the possibility to install fglrx driver09:40
lotuspsychjemetronomo90: but you said its sluggish, so best stick to radeon driver then09:41
metronomo90isn't fglrx the same as radeon?09:41
lotuspsychjemetronomo90: what else shows in your list09:41
metronomo90sudo lshw -C video just show me Intel Car09:42
metronomo90*card09:42
lotuspsychjemetronomo90: try your additional drivers section please09:42
metronomo90by the way, thank you for your kind help!09:43
metronomo90what would you like to know about my additional drivers section?09:43
lotuspsychjemetronomo90: what shows up your list09:43

lotuspsychjeIxxie: maybe the #ubuntu-gnome guys know this?09:44
Ixxielotuspsychje: I will ask, but should it really matter if its gnome or unity?09:45
metronomo90It shows me that I have an ATI R7 M265 and it presents me 3 possible drivers: xserver-xorg-video-ati (in use), fglrx and fglrx-updates09:45

OerHeksdbugger, that is an old spambot, clamav should take care of that15:08
quantsCan anybody help?15:09
compdocdbugger, from what I see on google, Cutwail spambot is a windows infection. It seems capable of sending a lot of spam. have you ever watched the lights on your networks cards or network switch to see if any machines are constantly sending?15:09
Mionyou probably have more than that15:09
Mionand just doesn't know it15:09
compdocnoelia, I sent a tablet screen to the TV, but the rez was low and only youtube seemed to work15:10
compdochopefully, things are better now15:10
noeliathank you15:12
dbuggerThe server that I was informed of being "infected" is just a server that I use as proxy. Which probably means that someone in my team is using a machine that is infected, and the proxy itself is safe...15:12

jaithHello ubuntu! I need to upgrade my workstation which is currently running 12.04.5. If I just click 'upgrade' in the Update Manager, I'm wondering if I'm going to have a lot of leftover cruft and such from the old OS. I'd like to do a totally fresh install on a clean, reformatted partition, but I must be absolutely certain not to wipe out some Windows 7 boots I have on this machine. Is there...21:56
jaith...some safe way to do a fresh install that won't wipe the windows OSes?21:56
reisiofresh install is a silly Windows things21:57
